Why Keep The Lgbtqia+ Acronym Together – "Wouldn't It Just Be Best To Split The Acronym?", Kim Andreassen, Bri Mckenzie, Julian Chen, Wendy Cumming-Potvin

Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education

Drawing on the authors' reflections after hosting a community launch event that shared outcomes from research about LGBTQIA+ inclusion in K-12 education in Western Australia, this report examines the importance of keeping the LGBTQIA+ acronym together, emphasizing its role in promoting inclusion, intersectionality, and equitable education. Global legislative actions targeting gender-diverse and queer youth, such as recent restrictive laws in the United States, threaten the fundamental right to education and undermine efforts toward achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 4 of quality education for all. Utilizing relevant education literature, researchers' reflections and introspective questions, this report stressed the interconnectedness …

“No (My Parents Can’T Know I’M Trans)…For Now:" Resisting Anti-Transgender Backlash In Schools Through A Policy Experiment, Lee Airton, Mik Turje

Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education

This From the Field account describes an intervention we and our colleagues offered in the Canadian culture war surrounding transgender children and youth, as clinical and research experts on K-12 education policy and supports for transgender youth and their parents. In 2023, following comprehensive review by K-12 school administrators, lawyers and experts in child welfare, we released No For Now (NFN). NFN responded to the impending passage of laws which directly harm transgender youth by essentially forcing them to be outed to potentially unsupportive parents. We suggest that NFN enacts an experimental kind of policy-based resistance to these laws and …

Engines For Activism: Gsa Advisors Sparking Student Activism For Lgbtq+ Equity, Elizabeth J. Meyer, Rebecca Grace Kaplan, Erin Kurtz

Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education

This article reports on a study on educators supporting student activism for LGBTQ+ equity in schools. The research questions we address are: What impacts do activist-educators have on the activities of the students in their GSA (Genders & Sexualities Alliance)? In what ways do activist-educators support student activism for LGBTQ+ equity? Based on in-depth interviews with seven educators in Colorado, we use grounded theory to present a conceptual model called “Engines for Activism” (EFA). We share data that explain how student and educator interactions within the space of a student club led by an educator-activist can drive advocacy and activism …

“You Can’T Ban That!”: Lgbtq+ Youth Of Color Speak Back To Book Bans In Utah, Sonny Partola, Leticia Alvarez Gutiérrez

Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education

This article explores how LGBTQ+ youth of color (LGBTQ+ YOC) in Utah perceive anti-LGBTQ+ book bans amid a hostile sociopolitical climate. Drawing from a critical ethnographic study at a public high school, and guided by Queer of Color Critique, we examine how censorship, heteronormativity, and White Christian nationalism shape book bans. Youth participants described such bans as mechanisms of erasure and harm that restrict access to affirming literature and reinforce marginalization, while also revealing contradictions in schools’ promotion of literacy alongside censorship. Despite these harms, participants resisted erasure—asserting visibility, belonging, and intellectual freedom. This study contributes to scholarship on censorship …

Numeracy

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals emphasize numeracy as essential for quality education, and require its integration across the curriculum, including into civic education (CE). However, the integration of numeracy in CE in Indonesian universities has not yet been clearly mapped out. This study aims to analyze the need for numeracy integration in CE as a basis for developing a numeracy-based CE learning model. Using a mixed method with an explanatory sequential design, the study involved a convenience sample of 225 students and 10 lecturers from various universities through surveys, interviews, observations, and documentation studies. Quantitative findings show that numeracy …

The Intersection Of Discrimination Between People Of Color And The Queer Community, Zaniya M. Howell Apr 2026

The Intersection Of Discrimination Between People Of Color And The Queer Community, Zaniya M. Howell

Honors Theses

This thesis examines the mental health experiences of Queer People of Color (QPOC) through an intersectional infrastructure, highlighting how intersecting systems of sexuality/gender-based and racial oppression influence psychological outcomes. QPOC experience disproportionate levels of systemic violence, trauma, and chronic stress in comparison to both heterosexual people of color and white LGBTQ+ counterparts, leading to elevated risks of anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. Prior research often separates race from sexual and gender identity, restricting a thorough understanding of this community’s experiences. Drawing on original survey data and existing literature, this study illustrates the aggravating effects of intersectional discrimination and …

Embedding Social Determinants Of Health Into Maternal Simulation Scenarios: Enhancing Nursing Staff Awareness Of Equity-Based Education, Sherina Evans

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Despite growing evidence emphasizing the importance in addressing disparities in maternal health outcomes, maternal health simulations often lack integration of social determinants of health (SDOH) and cultural considerations. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice quality improvement project was to enhance nursing faculty cultural awareness through simulation scenarios that incorporate SDOH and culturally responsive elements. This project was guided by Lewin’s Change Theory and the Jeffries Simulation Framework. The aim was to strengthen faculty awareness and skills to support the development of culturally inclusive simulation experiences. Descriptive statistics were utilized to analyze results which was a limitation. Nursing faculty …

Improving Monitoring And Documentation Of Long-Acting Injectable Antipsychotic Adherence In Patients With Schizophrenia Through Staff Education And Refill History Review, Stacy Ann Bruce

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Schizophrenia is a chronic psychiatric disorder associated with relapse, hospitalization, and poor outcomes when medication adherence is suboptimal. Nonadherence increases morbidity and healthcare utilization (World Health Organization, 2022; Zhao et al., 2025). Long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics improve adherence and reduce hospitalization, but inconsistent monitoring and documentation in outpatient settings hinder early identification of missed doses (Lieslehto et al., 2022). This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement project aimed to evaluate whether staff education and structured refill-monitoring processes improve identification and documentation of nonadherence to LAI antipsychotics. Using Kotter’s Change Management Model and the Plan-Do-Study-Act framework, the project focused on …

From Home To Campus: How Familial Criminality Shapes Deviant Behavior In College Students, Morgan Boone Apr 2026

From Home To Campus: How Familial Criminality Shapes Deviant Behavior In College Students, Morgan Boone

Honors Theses

Previous research has established a link between parental criminality and crimes of offspring. Low socioeconomic status has also been established as a risk factor to criminal behavior. Trends show that most individuals who attend college are of a higher socioeconomic status and are therefore at a potentially lower risk of criminal offending. The goal of the present study is to determine whether familial criminality has an impact on the criminality of college students despite the mediating factor of school involvement. Fifty-seven undergraduate students completed a survey on criminality within their family, their individual histories of deviant behavior, and their level …

An Empirical Case Study Of Substance Abuse Treatment Retention For Black Women In Boston, Melinda Asiamah Apr 2026

An Empirical Case Study Of Substance Abuse Treatment Retention For Black Women In Boston, Melinda Asiamah

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

This research investigates the disproportionate impact of substance use disorders (SUD) on Black women, a population facing critically low treatment retention rates, evidenced by outpatient dropout rates averaging 55%. Despite the efficacy of sustained treatment, Black women consistently underutilize and prematurely exit services compared to other demographics. This study asserts that identifying the drivers behind these disparities requires a shift from traditional public health lenses toward a framework that centers racial oppression, systemic barriers, and cultural obstacles.

By integrating Critical Race Theory (CRT), Black Feminist Theory, Social Determinants of Mental Health, and Biopsychosocial Theory, this research explores the impact of …

This body of work embodies this transition through the blending of the materials used to create the images themselves. The photographs …

Empowerment Or Oppression? College Students’ Interpretations Of Sex And Relationships In The Popular Media, Nicola Mcclung, Riana Pella Apr 2026

Empowerment Or Oppression? College Students’ Interpretations Of Sex And Relationships In The Popular Media, Nicola Mcclung, Riana Pella

Journal of Media Literacy Education Pre-Prints

Scholars have long emphasized the harmful effects of overtly sexist and oppressive media images on young people’s understandings of sex and relationships. Yet, this emphasis on explicit harm leaves a gap in understanding how college students interpret subtle, hidden, and ambiguous media messages. To address this gap, we asked 196 California college students at a large public university to critique a range of mainstream media content—from overtly oppressive, to affirming of nondominant gender identities, to containing mixed messages about empowerment and oppression. Responses were coded using our media literacy scoring guide for assessing students’ ability to critically analyze media messages …

Interpreting Mandates Through A Bilingual Lens: Dual Language Immersion Teachers’ Experiences With Georgia’S Structured Literacy Law: A Mixed Methods Study Of Policy Implementation In Georgia Dual Language Programs, Grethel Pedroarena

Curriculum and Instruction (Ed.D.) Dissertations

This qualitative-dominant mixed methods study investigates how Georgia’s Dual Language Immersion (DLI) teachers interpret and implement state literacy mandates, specifically House Bill 307 (HB 307). The research addresses a critical gap in policy-to-practice understanding, as current structured literacy requirements are primarily grounded in monolingual English frameworks that often overlook the instructional realities of bilingual classrooms. The study is theoretically anchored in Translanguaging Pedagogy, Sociocultural Theory, and Teacher Agency Theory.

Data were collected through a statewide survey of 38 DLI teachers and five in-depth phenomenological interviews. Findings reveal that teachers’ interpretations of the mandate are shaped less by the legislative text …

The Toll Of The Bridge: Affective Citizenship And The Negative Dialectic Of The `Promised Land' In Arab American Fiction, Muhammad Khaled Alatrash Apr 2026

The Toll Of The Bridge: Affective Citizenship And The Negative Dialectic Of The `Promised Land' In Arab American Fiction, Muhammad Khaled Alatrash

Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities

Scholarship on Arab American literature frequently follows a linear decline from Mahjar-era optimism to the disappointments of post-9/11. This article complicates that trajectory by reading Khalil Gibran's The Broken Wings (1912) and Laila Halaby's Once in a Promised Land (2007) as stages of a negative dialectic—contradiction held in tension without resolution. Gibran envisions America as a sanctuary unreached by the hands of the thieves, where the self might be understood correctly rather than sorted into hostile categories. Halaby reveals how sanctuary becomes a checkpoint: inclusion demands permanent performance of harmlessness, and failure is punished not through formal exclusion but through …

Improving Cultural Competence Among Healthcare Professionals Through A Targeted Staff Training Program, Oyindamola Akinkugbe Apr 2026

Improving Cultural Competence Among Healthcare Professionals Through A Targeted Staff Training Program, Oyindamola Akinkugbe

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Limited culturally competent care for Hispanic patients worsens existing health disparities, creates misunderstandings, leads to poor health outcomes, and reduces satisfaction with the quality of care. In an outpatient clinic, more than 70% of patients are Hispanic, yet healthcare providers reported a lack of confidence in caring for culturally diverse patients. Extensive literature supports staff training to improve provider cultural competence, but implementation remains inconsistent across healthcare settings. This quality improvement project addressed this gap by implementing a targeted staff training program grounded in the Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) in Nursing framework. The purpose of this project was …

All Works

This study examines the factors perceived by women academics as hindering their professional growth in developing countries, using Jordan as a case study. The study adopts a feminist empiricist approach to investigate how and why women academics perceive institutional and informal policies and structures in their universities as reproducing gender inequality, favoring male academics, or whether this is due to a lack of gender-sensitive policies. It accordingly suggests means to redress. The study also explores the respondents' perceptions of mentoring as a means of advancing professional growth. The study employs a quantitative research approach and surveys 211 women academics across …
