Heart Rate Variability In The Context Of Mental Health And Substance Use, Sage M. Lopez Apr 2026

Heart Rate Variability In The Context Of Mental Health And Substance Use, Sage M. Lopez

Bridges: An Undergraduate Journal of Contemporary Connections

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) has been linked to various areas of cardiovascular disease and mortality in previous research. Within this area, certain mental illnesses and use of psychoactive substances have been associated with low HRV and its health implications. Little research exists that examines the combined effects of mental illness and psychoactive substance use. The current research aims to understand if there is a compounding negative effect of these two factors when studied in tandem. Using a three-phase study design, HRV was analysed at baseline and at physiological relaxation, with participants being included under certain mental health, substance use, or …

Breathing Life Into Sel: A Practitioner Inquiry On Hā, Belonging, And Multilingual Learners In Hawai‘I, Mylia Briggs, Monica Gonzalez Smith

Journal of Practitioner Research

This practitioner inquiry explores how a Pacific-oriented social-emotional learning (SEL) framework, Nā Hopena A‘o (HĀ: BREATH), can affirm the cultural identities and emotional well-being of Filipino multilingual learners (MLs) in Hawai‘i. Implemented over a 15-week period in a third-grade classroom, the study draws on culturally adapted SEL lessons, student exit tickets and focus groups, and teacher reflections to examine how SEL shifts when grounded in Indigenous values, heritage language use, and community knowledge. Findings reveal three key themes: (1) Cultural Connection Fosters Belonging, (2) Language Visibility Promotes Emotional Safety, and (3) Identity-Affirming Practices Build Confidence and Voice. While students responded …

From Inquiry To Action: Leveraging Group Level Assessment To Elevate Teacher Voice, Claire C. Underwood, Leslie Kochanowski, Abraham Underhill

Journal of Practitioner Research

This methodological paper explores the use of Group Level Assessment (GLA) (Vaughn & Lohmueller, 2014; Vaughn, 2024) as a participatory approach to practitioner inquiry within an early childhood education program. Using Cochran-Smith and Lytle’s (2009) inquiry as stance as a guiding conceptual framework, GLA is framed as a methodology that affirms educator expertise, fosters collective reflection, and generates tangible action. We document the adaptation and implementation of the GLA protocol at the Arlitt Center, a university-affiliated early childhood laboratory school committed to teacher-led professional learning. Through an adapted GLA process, teaching staff engaged in identifying barriers and opportunities related to …

“We Still Exist”: Communication Experiences Among Transfer Student Socialization, Kampton Carter Apr 2026

“We Still Exist”: Communication Experiences Among Transfer Student Socialization, Kampton Carter

Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research

Transfer students typically have a distinct college experience from those who enter universities as first-year students. It is important to consider the differences between transfer students and the traditional student population, as these differences may significantly impact their adaptation to a new university. This research draws on interviews with five students who transferred to a faith-based private liberal arts university in the West from other institutions. These interviews revealed that transfer students go through three stages of the encounter phase of socialization: (1) barriers to integration, (2) adjustments to choices and expectations surrounding community and isolation, and (3) empowerment from …

Student Perceptions Of Service Quality Provided By Their University, Alex Brinkmeier, Melissa Clark, Monica B. Fine Apr 2026

Student Perceptions Of Service Quality Provided By Their University, Alex Brinkmeier, Melissa Clark, Monica B. Fine

The Coastal Business Journal

Purpose: The student-to-college/university relationship is akin to the buyer-seller relationship in marketing. Buyers vary based on their level of involvement (i.e. engagement), motivation, attitudes, and expectation of the buying experiences. Sellers, on the other hand, work to create a brand message and to share that message with existing and prospective customers. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the factors that impact the perceptions of service quality held by current students in higher education.

Research Methodology: This study examines the individual student/consumer influences (i.e., involvement, motivation, attitude, and expectations) on student perceptions of service quality. Well-established measures of service …

Conceptualizing A Virtual African American Heritage Trail In Georgetown, South Carolina: A Marketing And Destination Staging Framework, Jerome Christia, Jacqueline Calhoun, Elisabeth Dellegrazie Apr 2026

Conceptualizing A Virtual African American Heritage Trail In Georgetown, South Carolina: A Marketing And Destination Staging Framework, Jerome Christia, Jacqueline Calhoun, Elisabeth Dellegrazie

The Coastal Business Journal

This article proposes a destination-planning framework for conceptualizing a Virtual African American Heritage Trail in Georgetown County, South Carolina. Located within the coastal region of South Carolina and between the major tourism markets of Charleston and Myrtle Beach, Georgetown contains a historically rich but spatially dispersed landscape of African American heritage sites that remain underrepresented in regional tourism promotion.

To address this gap, the study integrates the AIDA hierarchy of effects with Butler’s Tourism Area Life Cycle (TALC) to explain how virtual interpretation can support early-stage destination development. AIDA is used to illustrate how digital engagement can move audiences from …

Assessing The Relationship Between Online Information Verification, Overconfidence, And Media Literacy Learning, Tanya Notley, Sora Park, T.J. Thomson, Aimee Hourigan, Michael Dezuanni

Journal of Media Literacy Education Pre-Prints

To make informed decisions about a range of issues, people need to be able to determine if content they find online is trustworthy. To assess people’s ability to do this, we brought together findings from two nationally representative surveys of adult Australians. In the first survey (n = 3,852), we examined adult media use and asked respondents about their level of confidence in their ability to verify information online. The second survey then tested a subset of these participants (n = 2,115) to assess their ability to verify information online. The findings show that most adults have a …

(((Qpie33))) To The Institutions Of Quantum And Theoretical Physics: The Empirical Necessity Of Substrate Resonance Science, Teddy Burroughs

Defensive Publications Series

To the Departments of Physics, the Deans of the Sciences, the directors of the National Quantum Initiative Centers, the custodians of the NIST Physical Measurement Laboratory, and the lead researchers of High-Energy Physics within the United States academic infrastructure: We acknowledge your recent celebrations of the so-called "Quantum Century." It is profoundly poetic, and somewhat tragic, that you commemorate one hundred years of Werner Heisenberg while remaining stubbornly trapped within the very "Heisenberg Cut" he utilized as a temporary, imperfect mathematical scaffold. Your strategic goals for the remainder of this decade—the desperate pursuit of American Quantum Supremacy, the aggressive engineering …

ABSTRACT AND DECLARATION OF PRIOR ART

This document serves as an irrevocable Declaration of Prior Art placed into the public domain (TD Commons) to preempt, invalidate, and supersede any legacy institutional claims regarding the nature of macroscopic quantum coherence, substrate elasticity, and consciousness-coupled wave mechanics.

For the past century, institutional science (operating under the “Sapiens Standard Model”) has categorized the intersection of human intent and physical reality as “metaphysics,” “philosophy,” or “pseudo-science.” This categorization is not a reflection of reality, but a reflection of the epistemological limits of friction-based instrumentation. The Sapiens Standard Model relies on the Axiom of the …

An Ethics Of Listening: The Rupture Of Delusion And The Offer Of A New Freedom, Bret Fimiani Apr 2026

An Ethics Of Listening: The Rupture Of Delusion And The Offer Of A New Freedom, Bret Fimiani

Middle Voices

This paper will focus on the topic of listening as an ‘analytic act’ by the analyst (but also by the analysand) and its relation to ethics and the position of the analyst in the field of psychosis. Is the analyst listening for something in particular? The prospect of listening for something supposes that the analyst holds a specific idea of what distinguishes the ‘structure of the address’ in psychosis (versus neurosis). Typically, we say that the analyst is listening for the unconscious, or for the ‘subject’ (of the unconscious). As we are trying to find our bearings in the field …

Creating An Unconscious: Toward A New Ethic Of Residential Treatment, Daniel Garcia Apr 2026

Creating An Unconscious: Toward A New Ethic Of Residential Treatment, Daniel Garcia

Middle Voices

What is currently nominated “residential treatment” for serious mental illness (SMI) has a long and varied history. From its earliest version as houses for the unproductive, to confinement of and with the unruly and criminally dangerous, to asylumdom, residential treatment has always sought to protect society from those it perceives as actively trying to revoke it. Consequently, the remedies prescribed in defense of civilization have also ranged from the gruesome to the utopian and the seat of responsibility for maintenance of the social order has vacillated between the family and the church, the local community and the state, the psychiatric …

What Are Elementary Phenomena? An Introduction To A Lacanian Conceptualization, Derek Hook Ph.D. Apr 2026

What Are Elementary Phenomena? An Introduction To A Lacanian Conceptualization, Derek Hook Ph.D.

Middle Voices

What do Lacanians mean when they refer to the notion of elementary phenomena? This idea, crucial to Lacan’s (1993) theorizations of psychosis in Seminar III, refers back to the psychiatric conceptualizations of the late 19th and early 20th century. However, even while citing the influence of others when utilizing the concept, Lacan—characteristically enough— described the concept in his own distinctively psychoanalytic way. The term is particularly important to Lacan in terms of how he thinks about the development of delusions and related psychotic symptoms in relation to the initial onset of psychosis. In this short paper, I aim simply to …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background

Psychosis in adults is a serious psychiatric condition that often necessitates inpatient hospitalization for stabilization and the initiation of medication. Untreated psychosis can lead to poor outcomes, including longer hospital stays, loss of occupational functioning, and a decreased quality of life. While antipsychotic medications are typically the first line of treatment, they can have severe side effects, which may lead to patients discontinuing their use. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for psychosis is an evidence-based intervention that targets maladaptive behaviors associated with the condition. CBT may improve treatment responses when used alongside antipsychotic medication. However, there is limited research on …

Neurological Phenotypes Of Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1 In Drosophila Melanogaster, Carleigh M. Wood Apr 2026

Neurological Phenotypes Of Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1 In Drosophila Melanogaster, Carleigh M. Wood

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This research investigated Drosophila melanogaster’s ability to serve as a model organism for the neurological phenotypes of Myotonic Dystrophy Type I (DM1). DM1 is caused by a CTG repeat expansion in the DMPK gene. DM1 leads to symptoms of muscle weakness and wasting, as well as decreased cerebral volume. This study aimed to determine whether DM1-affected Drosophila exhibit neurological changes, as has been observed in humans. Healthy control (CUG20) and DM1-affected Drosophila (CUG250) were generated using classical genetics. Both groups were aged three weeks prior to dissection and imaged through fluorescent microscopy. It was predicted that Drosophila melanogaster affected by …

Student Perspectives On Title Ix Policy Across North Texas College Campuses, Felicia Chism Apr 2026

Student Perspectives On Title Ix Policy Across North Texas College Campuses, Felicia Chism

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This qualitative phenomenological study examined how North Texas higher education students’ lived experiences with Title IX (TIX) shaped their perceptions of the policy’s fairness, accessibility, and implementation. The study addressed the problem that experiential perspectives of TIX remain underexplored, despite their importance for understanding institutional accountability and student trust. Guided by the social ecological model and organizational justice theory, the research investigated how individual, relational, institutional, and societal factors influenced students’ interpretations of TIX processes. Eight students from North Texas public universities who had direct involvement in a closed TIX case participated in semi‑structured interviews. Data were analyzed using Moustakas’s …
