Can Machines Testify? Llms And The Boundaries Of Testimonial Epistemology, Michael J. Cummins Jul 2026

Can Machines Testify? Llms And The Boundaries Of Testimonial Epistemology, Michael J. Cummins

Philosophy Summer Fellows

As Large Language Models and AI chatbots become increasingly prevalent, pressing questions are raised about whether beliefs formed through LLM interactions carry the same epistemic weight as beliefs formed through human testimony. How we answer this question depends on whether LLMs can function as testifiers, a role which is typically assumed to require a human or human-like agent. This assumption has gone largely unexamined, yet its consequences are significant: if LLM outputs cannot constitute testimony, then the justificatory tools of testimonial epistemology are unavailable to any beliefs formed through LLM interaction. This paper challenges that assumption. It first argues that …

Evaluating The Suitability Of Commercial Off-The-Shelf Software Radio Peripheral Front-Ends For High-Fidelity Satnav Monitoring Applications, Mark J. Carroll, Sanjeev Gunawardena, Timothy I. Machin, Christine M. Schubert Kabban, Joseph J. Rushanan

Faculty Publications

Signal quality monitoring is an essential portion of the Global Positioning System (GPS) enterprise. Through monitoring, accuracy and normality are achieved for each satellite and signal. GPS users rely on this information from monitoring stations to ensure safe and successful operation. Traditional monitoring has been performed with hardware receivers or custom radio frequency front-ends. These receivers have known and measured impacts on the distortions of the received signal. This research aims to elucidate and quantify the amount of distortion introduced by the front-ends of general-purpose commercial off-the-shelf software-defined radio (SDR) peripherals. Monitoring stations outfitted with SDRs are more flexible and …

Search For Planetary-Mass Ultracompact Binaries Using Data From The First Part Of The Ligo–Virgo–Kagra Fourth Observing Run, The Ligo Scientific Collaboration, The Virgo Collaboration, The Kagra Collaboration, Marc Favata, Shoan Ghosh, Rodica M. Martin

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We present a search for gravitational waves from inspiraling, planetary-mass ultracompact binaries using data from the first part of the fourth observing run of LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA. Finding no evidence of such systems, we determine the maximum distance reach for such objects and their merger rate densities. Then, we identify classes of primordial black hole mass distributions for which these rate limits can be translated into relevant constraints on the mass distribution of primordial black holes, assuming that they are all composed of dark matter, in the mass range [10−6,10−3]⁢𝑀⊙. Our constraints for the class of primordial black hole …

Entity Labels Are Not Entity Signals: A Framework For Observable Relevance In Document Re-Ranking, Utshab Kumar Ghosh, Shubham Chatterjee Jul 2026

Entity Labels Are Not Entity Signals: A Framework For Observable Relevance In Document Re-Ranking, Utshab Kumar Ghosh, Shubham Chatterjee

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Entity-aware document retrieval uses query-associated entities as ranking signals, assuming that semantically relevant entities are also useful retrieval signals. We show this assumption is insufficient - and explain why. Unlike terms, which are ground-truth observations, entity links are hypotheses produced by an imperfect linker: an entity can be topically central yet provide no discriminative signal if the linker fires indiscriminately across relevant and non-relevant documents. We formalize this as a distinction between Conceptual Entity Relevance (CER) - whether an entity is topically related to a query - and Observable Entity Relevance (OER) - whether its observed presence in a collection …

Batik Motifs For The Distinctive Jarik Of The Samin Community In Reinterpreting The Essence Of Samin Surosentiko Pitutur Luhur, Sugeng Wardoyo, Aryo Anggorojati, Tri Wulandari

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

The Samin community (Sedulur Sikep) in Margomulyo, Bojonegoro, has the value of Pitutur Luhur inherited by Samin Surosentiko, but it has not been represented in the batik jarik motif as a communal identity. This creation-based research aims to explore this value, realize it in the design of written batik, and examine its philosophical meaning as an effort to preserve intangible cultural heritage. The method used is practice-based research with a qualitative approach through literature study (ethical data), participatory observation, and in-depth interviews with elders (emic data). The creation process refers to the stages of experimentation, manekung, and the formation of …

An Examination Of Spatial Structure In The Faunal Composition Of Mesopelagic Fish Assemblages Across The Open-Ocean Gulf Of Mexico, Including Possible Transitions Near The Oceanic Rim, Bianca Ruiz Jul 2026

An Examination Of Spatial Structure In The Faunal Composition Of Mesopelagic Fish Assemblages Across The Open-Ocean Gulf Of Mexico, Including Possible Transitions Near The Oceanic Rim, Bianca Ruiz

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

The Gulf of Mexico harbors a unique pelagic ecoregion, recognized for its diverse assemblages of mesopelagic fishes (200 – 1000 m depth distribution during daytime), which play a crucial role in deep-ocean food web dynamics. While mesopelagic fishes are well documented in the Gulf, little is known about how assemblage distribution patterns change where the oceanic domain meets the continental slope domain, a region dubbed the ‘oceanic rim.’ In the northern and eastern Gulf, a spatially extensive pelagic sampling and analysis program provides an opportunity to investigate onshore-offshore gradients in oceanic fish distributions. This thesis examined the nature of surficial …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

South Florida hosts a number of non-native wildlife species, including African monkeys. This study examined wild vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus sabaeus) in Dania Beach, Florida, to determine whether aircraft-related atmospheric noise affected their threat detection capabilities and behavioral responses. Using predator-call playbacks and focal scan samples, behavioral data was recorded across pre-, during-, and post-playback phases. Behaviors were labeled as nonvigilant or vigilant. The study also assessed whether responses differed between the local and novel predator calls as well as whether repeated trials suggested habituation over the course of the experiment. Results showed that the monkeys’ abilities to successfully …

Evaluation Of Microwave Treatment Of Pfos-Laden Granular Activated Carbon, Rachel Melo Fonseca Jul 2026

Evaluation Of Microwave Treatment Of Pfos-Laden Granular Activated Carbon, Rachel Melo Fonseca

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This study investigated the microwave treatment as a potential regeneration approach for PFOS-laden granular activated carbon (GAC). PFOS was used as a model legacy PFAS, and calcium was selected to examine how inorganic constituents may influence PFAS loading and fluorine behavior during treatment. Microwave temperature profiling showed that GAC temperatures increased with treatment time and power level, reaching approximately 400-950°C. Selected microwave conditions reduced PFOS-derived extractable organic fluorine (EOF), with apparent EOF reduction increasing from 65.5% after 1 min to 96.8% after 4 min. Calcium increased PFOS-derived EOF loading before microwave treatment but did not show a consistent effect on …

Who Do You Think You’Re Talking To? A Longitudinal Study Of How Disclosed Partner Identity Shapes Relational Communication With Ai Among College Students, Vito Anthony Borio Jul 2026

Who Do You Think You’Re Talking To? A Longitudinal Study Of How Disclosed Partner Identity Shapes Relational Communication With Ai Among College Students, Vito Anthony Borio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This study presents a longitudinal, two-condition, between-subjects experiment in which partner identity is disclosed as either human or AI in text-based chat; however, all participants (N = 60) interacted with the same chatbot. Informed by both Social Information Processing Theory (SIPT; Walther, 1995) and the Computers Are Social Actors Paradigm (CASA; Nass & Moon, 2000), this design draws on the former’s longitudinal measurement tradition to empirically test whether its predictions hold, using the latter as both a framework and procedure for investigating chatbot interactions. The findings inform both theories, indicating that perceived partner identity significantly affects perceptions of relational …

Dnp Final Report: Improving Length Of Stay Outcomes Using Structured Barrier Rounds: A Quality Improvement Project, Martha Kwamboka Apella

DNP Final Reports

Prolonged length of stay (LOS) in the acute care setting is a challenging issue driven by multiple factors. Increased LOS is associated with mortality, hospital-acquired infections, patient safety events, functional impairment, decreased quality of life, social isolation, and increased cost of care. The causes of increased LOS in the medical-surgical unit are unclear, necessitating an evidence-based project to address the problem. The purpose of this quality improvement initiative was to implement structured interdisciplinary barrier rounds and evaluate their effect on LOS, opportunity days, and estimated cost of care in a medical-surgical unit. The facility complex care coordinator (CCC) was identified …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: Liver transplant recipients must adapt to significant physiological and psychological challenges following surgery, including the side effects of immunosuppressants and the burden of chronic treatment. These stressors often cause symptom distress and impair quality of life (QoL). The sense of coherence (SOC), a psychological construct reflecting an individual’s ability to perceive life as comprehensible, manageable, and meaningful, has been associated with better coping and higher QoL. However, few studies have examined how SOC and symptom distress jointly influence QoL among liver transplant recipients.

Purpose: This study aimed to explore the relationships among demographic and clinical characteristics, symptom distress, SOC, …
