Empowering Communication And Understanding In Healthcare Relationships With Human-Centered Ai, Songyun Tao Jul 2026

Empowering Communication And Understanding In Healthcare Relationships With Human-Centered Ai, Songyun Tao

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Healthcare communication depends not only on what information is available, but on how it is interpreted, communicated, and acted upon across different roles. AI can support these processes by summarizing, transforming, and organizing information, but it can also change what becomes visible, who is expected to act, and where responsibility resides.

This dissertation examines how human-centered AI can support communication and understanding across healthcare relationships through three independently developed systems. MusicalPT supports self--body communication in physical rehabilitation through adaptive musical feedback. CareInsights supports communication among professional caregivers in long-term dementia care by preserving and surfacing person-specific context across shifts. Family …

Neurodivergent Peer Tutoring And Anti-Ableism: Two High Schoolers’ Lived Experiences While Working In A Neurodiversity-Based Writing Center, Daniel S. Harrison

The Writing Center Journal

Neurodivergence is naturally present in the writing center and most often recognized by labels like ADHD, autism, OCD, dyslexia, and so on. However, neurodivergent voices in writing center scholarship have been few and far between in postsecondary institutions (Babcock, 2017; Batt, 2018; Kleinfeld, 2023), and in the secondary writing center even less so. Therefore, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the personal, relational, and formative aspects of the lived experiences of two neurodivergent students through a critical disability theory lens as they provided writing consultations to their neurodivergent peers in a Mid-Atlantic, independent special education school. …

Radiation Testing And Failure Analysis Of A Complex Heterogeneous Soc, Garrett Smith Jul 2026

Radiation Testing And Failure Analysis Of A Complex Heterogeneous Soc, Garrett Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Heterogeneous System on Chips (SoCs) provide a robust platform that can flexibly handle different applications. Their small form factor and low power consumption for their performance have made SoCs an attractive option for space applications. However, SoCs are sensitive to the ionizing radiation found in space. We need to understand how an SoC will behave in the high radiation found in space. This requires us to perform radiation testing of the SoCs on Earth to understand their behavior. The radiation testing and analysis of a heterogeneous SoC is complex as it contains multiple different processing cores, memories, and other system …

Machine Learning Integrated Designing And Screening Of 8-Hydroxyquinoline Based Metallo-Beta-Lactamase Inhibitors, Anthony M. Baudino, Kari Stone Jul 2026

Machine Learning Integrated Designing And Screening Of 8-Hydroxyquinoline Based Metallo-Beta-Lactamase Inhibitors, Anthony M. Baudino, Kari Stone

Chemistry Department Faculty Articles

The rapid emergence of metallo-b-lactamase-mediated antibiotic resistance has created an urgent need for new inhibitor discovery strategies. In this work, a machine-learning-guided workflow was developed to generate and prioritize potential inhibitors targeting NDM-1. A SMILES-based variational autoencoder was first pretrained on a broad molecular dataset to learn general chemical syntax and latent molecular representations. The model was then fine-tuned on an 8-hydroxyquinoline-enriched dataset to bias molecular generation toward zinc-binding chemical space relevant to metallo-β-lactamase inhibition. Generated compounds were processed through structural filtering and docking-based evaluation to create training data for downstream predictive modeling. Molecular fingerprints and physicochemical descriptors were then …

Where Do Ai Coding Agents Fail? An Empirical Study Of Failed Agentic Pull Requests In Github, Ramtin Ehsani, Sakshi Pathak, Shriya Rawal, Abdullah Al Mujahid, Mia Mohammad Imran, Preetha Chatterjee

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

AI coding agents are now submitting pull requests (PRs) to software projects, acting not just as assistants but as autonomous contributors. As these agentic contributions are rapidly increasing across real repositories, little is known about how they behave in practice and why many of them fail to be merged. In this paper, we conduct a large-scale study of 33k agent-authored PRs made by five coding agents across GitHub. (RQ1) We first quantitatively characterize merged and not-merged PRs along four broad dimensions: 1) merge outcomes across task types, 2) code changes, 3) CI build results, and 4) review dynamics. We observe …

A Fuzzy–Neutrosophic Suitability Index For Selecting An Appropriate Reasoning Model Under Vagueness, Incompleteness, And Conflict, Nada A. Nabeeh, Ahmed Samy Jul 2026

A Fuzzy–Neutrosophic Suitability Index For Selecting An Appropriate Reasoning Model Under Vagueness, Incompleteness, And Conflict, Nada A. Nabeeh, Ahmed Samy

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Fuzzy reasoning and neutrosophic reasoning are both used to handle uncertainty, but they are not intended for the same uncertainty structure. Fuzzy reasoning is suitable when uncertainty appears mainly as gradual vagueness, where a value may belong to a concept such as ``high risk'' or ``good performance'' to a certain degree. In this case, a membership value is often sufficient. Neutrosophic reasoning is more suitable when the problem also contains incomplete information, undecided evidence, or conflict between sources. In such cases, one membership degree may be too limited because it cannot represent support, rejection, and indeterminacy separately. This study introduces …

Circadian rhythms are critical for maintaining homeostasis and regulating physiological functions, and consequentially impact disease progression; yet, they remain largely overlooked in in vitro models used in preclinical research. One major barrier to rigorously testing the role of circadian rhythms in these models is the lack of accessible tools that seamlessly integrate into standard culture setups and are capable of sustainably delivering time cues to cells and tissues in long term experiments. Here, we present the ThermoClock, a low-cost, Arduino-based automated temperature control system capable of delivering independent temperature programs to multiple cultures simultaneously. Using circadian reporter U2OS cell lines …

Bridging Change: The Role Of The Pont-Neuf In A Transforming Paris, Mathilde M. Oscarson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In a twist of irony, the Pont Neuf (“New Bridge”) stands today as the oldest bridge crossing the Seine River in Paris, France. This paper examines how artistic representations of the Pont-Neuf such as etchings, early photography, painting, and art installations embody shifting views of the bridge’s function, the role of public space, and community building even as the bridge itself has not changed. The Pont-Neuf is important to Parisians, as evidenced by how often it has been represented in art, both as an integral aspect of the city’s infrastructure as well as the center of cultural and public life. …

Neutrosophic Time-Truncated Acceptance Sampling Plans Based On The Exponentiated Weibull Distribution For Reliability Applications, Divya P.R., Preethi John

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Classical acceptance sampling plans require precisely specified parameter values, an assumption routinely violated by measurement uncertainty and gauge imprecision in practice. This article develops Neutrosophic Time-Truncated Acceptance Sampling Plans (N-TTASP) for the Exponentiated Weibull (EW) distribution by representing the scale parameter as a neutrosophic interval. The neutrosophic sample size nN ∈ [nL, nU] and acceptance number cN ∈ [cL, cU] are obtained by minimizing n_U subject to dual producer and consumer risk constraints on the neutrosophic Operating Characteristic interval. A new indeterminacy ratio η is introduced as a …

Decision Making For Community Resilience: Applications In Flooded Transit Systems And Shared Housing, Mubarak Iddrisu

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Addressing climate-induced flooding and housing insecurity requires decisions that are technically sound, locally meaningful and feasible to implement. In public transit systems, flooding can damage infrastructure, increase travel time and reduce access to essential destinations, especially for older adults. Shared housing offers an alternative housing model where staff must balance affordability, compatibility, service exchange and participant choice when pairing home providers with housing seekers. In this dissertation, I examine how analytics and decision modeling can support community resilience across these two domains. I use spatial analysis, machine learning, optimization and matching theory to develop practical decision-support workflows. Chapter 2 proposes …

Recoverable Agentic Ai For Communication Networks: A Survey Of Architectures, Trust Regulation, And Failure Recovery, Omar K. Dawoud, Osama A. Ghoneim

Sustainable Machine Intelligence Journal

Agentic artificial intelligence is increasingly integrated into communication networks, enabling systems that perceive network state, reason over conditions, and execute actions on live infrastructure. As these systems act directly on operational environments, their behavior after failure remains insufficiently characterized: existing evaluation emphasizes throughput, latency, and accuracy, without capturing how systems recover after actions that affect network state. This survey examines agentic artificial intelligence in communication networks through the lens of recoverability, based on a systematically coded corpus of the recent literature. The paper introduces the MATR-R framework, which organizes recoverability around memory awareness, action governance, trust regulation, and recovery capability. …

Healer Or Human? How Online Physician Reviews Guide Patient Choice, Shabnam Azimi, Sina Ansari, Ignacio Luri, Atefeh Yazdanparast Jul 2026

Healer Or Human? How Online Physician Reviews Guide Patient Choice, Shabnam Azimi, Sina Ansari, Ignacio Luri, Atefeh Yazdanparast

Faculty Publications

Online reviews increasingly guide physician choice, yet it remains unclear whether content emphasizing a physician's competence (technical skills) or benevolence (prioritizing patients' welfare over self‐interest) more strongly influences patients' decisions. Integrating a field study of 12,351 physician reviews with two online experiments, we distinguish two dimensions of review effectiveness: how helpful readers find a review, and how confident they feel about the choice it informs. We show that competence‐ and benevolence‐focused content influences these outcomes through distinct mechanisms. Benevolence‐focused reviews receive higher helpfulness evaluations because caring behaviors are easier to describe in concrete, vivid language and because naturalistic review platforms …
