Paraeducator Perceptions Of Teacher-Supervisory Behaviors And Their Effects On Paraeducator Retention, Alexis M. Graham Aug 2026

Paraeducator Perceptions Of Teacher-Supervisory Behaviors And Their Effects On Paraeducator Retention, Alexis M. Graham

Education Doctoral

Paraeducators are leaving their positions at alarming levels, leaving teachers, students, and schools vulnerable. The exploratory, cross-sectional, correlational survey study examines the relationship between paraeducator perceptions of teacher-supervisor leadership behaviors and retention, as well as the factors contributing to turnover. Full range leadership theory (FRLT) and the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) are used to describe leadership behaviors. The study used a survey design advertised to a paraeducator Facebook group, which included the MLQ rating scale, a closed-response item on intent to leave, and an open ended question on intent to leave. Data was analyzed using statistical and correlational analyses, as …

A Post-Incarceration Syndrome And Its Impact On Formerly Incarcerated Individuals: A Quantitative Examination Of In-Prison Services And Community Reentry Resources In New York City, Jorge Antonio Diaz

Education Doctoral

The United States incarcerates more individuals than any other nation, yet the effects ofincarceration remain underexamined in quantitative research. Although qualitative research has documented the traumatic sequelae of confinement, including post-incarceration syndrome (PICS), limited work has assessed the perceived adequacy of services available during incarceration, community reentry, and parole supervision. This study addresses that gap through a non-experimental, cross-sectional, descriptive quantitative design. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 31 formerly incarcerated adults using a 40-item researcher-developed tool, the Post-Incarceration Services Assessment Survey (PISAS), which examined perceived adequacy of in-prison coping services, community-based reentry resources, and parole officer support. …

Perceived Professional Investment Differences And Learning Modality Preferences Between Generation X And Millennial Managers In Nonprofit Organizations, Raul Antonio Pereles Jr. Aug 2026

Perceived Professional Investment Differences And Learning Modality Preferences Between Generation X And Millennial Managers In Nonprofit Organizations, Raul Antonio Pereles Jr.

Education Doctoral

This study examines generational differences between Generation X and Millennial nonprofit managers in perceived employer investment in professional development and preferred learning delivery modality. Grounded in Knowles' (1980) theory of andragogy, the study addresses two research questions using a quantitative, cross-sectional survey design. A sample of 66 nonprofit managers (35 Generation X, 31 Millennial) from a major northeastern U.S. metropolitan area completed an online survey using the Professional Development Short Scale (PDSS; Mourão et al., 2014) and a ranked-preference measure of learning modality (in-person, hybrid, virtual). Results indicated no statistically significant difference between Generation X (M = 5.85, SD = …

Objective: To identify proteomic signatures underlying 3-year progression from impaired fasting glucose (IFG) to diabetes.

Research design and methods: We examined IFG progression in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study from visit 2 (1990-1992) to visit 3 (1993-1995). We tested associations of 4,955 plasma proteins (SomaScan version 4.0) with ∼3-year progression from IFG (FG 100-125 mg/dL without diabetes) to diabetes (diagnosis, medication, or FG ≥126 mg/dL) using logistic regression models adjusted for demographics, cardiometabolic risk factors, and baseline glucose with Bonferroni correction (P < 10-5). We explored biological pathways enriched among the top proteins and calculated improvements in prediction (ΔAUC and net reclassification using 3-year risk thresholds of 6% and 15% in 80% training and 20% internal validation subsamples). We validated results in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) cohort.

Results: There were 3,786 ARIC participants with IFG (mean [SD] age 57 [6] years, 52% female, …

Impact Of Prematurity On Nutrient Signaling And Protein Synthesis In Skeletal Muscle, Antonio C Ramos Dos Santos, Ki Beom Jang, Marta L Fiorotto, Teresa A Davis

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Preterm birth disrupts nutrient-responsive signaling pathways critical for skeletal muscle growth and long-term metabolic health. Despite improvements in neonatal care, preterm infants often experience postnatal growth failure marked by impaired lean mass accretion. This review examines how prematurity intrinsically alters insulin and amino acid signaling to mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1), a central regulator of translation initiation and protein synthesis. Evidence from translational models reveals blunted activation of mTORC1 and its downstream effectors, independent of birth weight or comorbidities. Defects in insulin-PDK1/mTORC2-Akt signaling and amino acid sensing, particularly leucine sensing, contribute to impaired mTORC1-dependent translation initiation and reduced …

Collegiate Athletes’ And Coaches’ Communicative Constitution Of Resilience: A Case Study, Lillian B. Feder Aug 2026

Collegiate Athletes’ And Coaches’ Communicative Constitution Of Resilience: A Case Study, Lillian B. Feder

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Resilience processes are communicative in nature and vital to the wellbeing and success of athletic personnel and organizations. However, the communicative components of resilience-building are largely ignored in sport scholarship and practice. This study seeks to bridge that gap by using the communication theory of resilience as a sensitizing concept to develop a thorough understanding of communicative resilience-building processes in athletics. Semi-structured in-depth interviews with members of a Division I college baseball team were analyzed using thematic co-occurrence analysis. Findings indicate that collegiate athletes and coaches experience resilience-building as a combination of mental toughness (i.e., persistence and discipline) and resourcefulness …

Book Review Of, Beyond Techno-Economic Diffusion: A Systematic Review And Socio-Technical Audit Of Agent-Based Models Of Rooftop Solar Pv Adoption, Yavuz Unal, Mehmet Kayalica, Denizhan Guven

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Agent-based modelling (ABM) is increasingly used to analyze rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) diffusion, yet it remains unclear how existing models operationalize socio-technical mechanisms such as peer effects, grid constraints, policy uncertainty, and energy justice. This systematic review evaluates ABM architectures for rooftop PV diffusion through a three-layer evidence design: a mapping of 876 publications (2000–2025), a core set of 101 ABM-related studies, and structured coding of 50 focal ABMs using the Spatial–Economic–Mechanistic–Policy–Justice (S-E-M-P-J) framework, which tests whether mechanisms are formally implemented rather than narratively invoked. The coding reveals an uneven architecture: behavioural mechanisms are nearly universal (96%) and policy representations …

De-Centering And Re-Centering Digital Scholarship, Ten Years On, Matthew Hunter, Aaron Retteen, Micah Vandegrift

Faculty Scholarship

Ten years after the publication of a manifesto attempting to describe what digital scholarship could do for and within libraries, some of the original authors reflect on the progress of the call-to-action. This article describes areas in which the integration of digital scholarship activities as core parts of librarianship has and has not become commonplace and traces larger-scale developments in the academy and global knowledge landscape that have contributed to the accuracy of the predictions made in 2017.

Geodesic Completeness And The Hopf-Rinow Theorem, Christopher Farias Aug 2026

Geodesic Completeness And The Hopf-Rinow Theorem, Christopher Farias

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Differential geometry is concerned with the properties of calculus and geometry on curved n-dimensional manifolds. As a result, thinking about such a space often runs counter to the Euclidean geometer's intuition of distances, angles, and transformations. This thesis aims to build up to proving an important result in the study of Riemannian manifolds: the Hopf-Rinow theorem.

In Chapter 2, we begin by defining what a manifold is and showing that the collection of directional derivatives at a point on the manifold spans a tangent vector space. After defining a basis and a metric for this space, in Chapter 3, we …

From Genes To Streams: Mitochondrial Approaches To Population Monitoring Of The Santa Ana Sucker Catostomus Santaanae, Mariana Antonio Aug 2026

From Genes To Streams: Mitochondrial Approaches To Population Monitoring Of The Santa Ana Sucker Catostomus Santaanae, Mariana Antonio

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This study was developed to use aquatic environmental DNA (eDNA) as a tool to detect the presence of the Santa Ana sucker (Catostomus santaanae), a federally threatened fish species, across the Santa Ana River in Southern California. Environmental DNA is any genetic material that an organism sheds into the environment. We can get an idea of what aquatic species are present when sampling water at a given site. We sequenced the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of the Santa Ana sucker and designed custom DNA primers to improve eDNA detection accuracy. These primers were selected based on high genetic …

Advantages Of Dynamic Representation For Related Rates Problems In Calculus, Eri Osuna Aug 2026

Advantages Of Dynamic Representation For Related Rates Problems In Calculus, Eri Osuna

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Related-rates problems are a standard yet persistently difficult topic in first-semester calculus. Research increasingly recommends dynamic visualization tools such as GeoGebra, but direct comparisons of static and dynamic representations in related-rates settings remain scarce. This qualitative study examines how representation type shapes the quality of students' reasoning and their perceived experience during related-rates problem solving. Six mathematics students who had completed Calculus —a group of four undergraduates and a pair of graduate students—completed a static sliding-ladder task and a dynamic airplane-and-camera task supported by an interactive GeoGebra applet, followed by an interview. Findings indicate that the two representations supported reasoning …

The Effect Of Telehealth Expansion On The Health Equity Of Underserved Populations, Mansi B. Satani

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The rapid expansion of telehealth, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, has changed healthcare delivery in the United States. The use of telehealth can potentially decrease disparities related to isolation, shortage of providers and barriers to transportation, however, its impact on health equity in underserved populations is unknown. This paper explores how telehealth expansion impacts rural populations' access to healthcare, health outcomes, and equity. It also examines its impact on populations with low income, racial, ethnic minorities, and Medicaid recipients who frequently encounter obstacles to healthcare and digital access (Nouri et al., 2020; Shah et al., 2024). A mixed-method design …

Student Attitudes And Perceptions Of Proof In Mathematics, Emelin G. Sibrian Marquez Aug 2026

Student Attitudes And Perceptions Of Proof In Mathematics, Emelin G. Sibrian Marquez

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Traditionally, mathematical proof is viewed primarily as a tool for validation or verification. However, proof holds many other important roles such as discovery, reasoning, explanation, and justification. For many students, these other roles are not always obvious. Those encountering rigorous proof for the first time often find the process abstract, intimidating or disconnected from their previous learning. This disconnect can lead to negative attitudes as students transition from computational mathematics to advanced proof-based mathematics. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, this study examined undergraduate and graduate mathematics students at a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) in Southern California. We investigated what students perceive the …

From Margins To Center: Los Deslenguados In The Borderlands, Brissa S. Porras Villalobos

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Borderland literature is a subgenre that often includes narratives of migration, tribulations, identity development, and resilience. It foregrounds the collaboration of vulnerability, isolation, connection, and power, showing that hybridity is a source of cultural energy. Acknowledging the borderland and its culture is crucial because it challenges stereotypes, validates marginalized voices, and celebrates heritage in all its complexity. By centering these experiences, borderland literature affirms the potential of living between cultures, prioritizing the recognition of the in-between, valuing and celebrating the space where identities are continually reshaped, histories are reclaimed, and resilience is nurtured rather than neglected. Using Gloria Anzaldúa's theory …

Visualizing Irrationality: Digit Mosaics In Okabe–Ito, Raven Quilestino-Olario Jul 2026

Visualizing Irrationality: Digit Mosaics In Okabe–Ito, Raven Quilestino-Olario

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Five visual mosaics translate 10,000-digit segments of well-known mathematical constants into color. For each constant, the digits are placed in a 100×100 grid read left to right and top to bottom, including the digit before the decimal point, and each digit (0–9) is mapped to a color in the Okabe–Ito palette. A matching bar chart shows the digit counts within the same window, allowing quick comparison of how evenly digits appear. The series includes π, e, √2, φ, and the Euler–Mascheroni constant γ. Together, the mosaics and counts turn numerical randomness into visual harmony while keeping the work readable for …

Riding The Rails Of Reason: A Dialogue On Truth, Logic, And Proof, Surinder Pal Singh Kainth

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

On a quiet train ride, I found myself in conversation with Noor, an inquisitive teenager with sharp questions about truth, logic, and mathematical proof. As we talked, I used the train itself as a metaphor to explain how mathematical proofs provide certainty, far beyond what repetitive verification alone can offer. Our discussion ranged from common misconceptions about the foundations of logic to the need for clear definitions and axioms. We also touched on fundamental ideas such as the challenges posed by the Axiom of Choice and the limitations revealed by Gödel’s incompleteness theorem.

Count, Robin Young

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

It's the thought that counts? No, it's this canzone that counts! This poem explores the philosophy of counting through five stanzas from shoreline pebbles to Godel's incompleteness theorems. Counting becomes our guide through Zeno's paradoxes, irrational numbers, Cantor's infinities, and quantum measurement problems. The poem counts, recounts, and discovers that some things simply cannot be counted.
