Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs was used as the guiding framework to assess the social workers' understanding and their capacity to address students’ basic needs. The expected outcome …

Parent Involvement In Elevating Elementary Children's Educational Success, Taylor R. Arreola May 2025

Parent Involvement In Elevating Elementary Children's Educational Success, Taylor R. Arreola

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

In many elementary schools, a common problem lies in the lack of overall and consistent parental involvement at home and communication with the child’s teacher. This creates challenges because if a child is not receiving extra support at home- whether due to parents' beliefs about their responsibility for education, their relationship with teachers, or barriers they may face, such as language- it can lead to gaps in the child’s educational success and may cause them to struggle in their academic journey. This project's purpose and focus are to assist parents and teachers in understanding the different implications of parent involvement. …

The Chilling Effects Of Dobbs, Jonathon W. Penney, Danielle Keats Citron, Alexis Shore Ingber May 2025

The Chilling Effects Of Dobbs, Jonathon W. Penney, Danielle Keats Citron, Alexis Shore Ingber

Articles & Book Chapters

The Supreme Court’s evisceration of the federal constitutional right to abortion has raised the specter of criminal and civil liability for abortion providers and patients. Police and prosecutors have easy access to commercial reservoirs of intimate data. As individual accounts made clear in the wake of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, corporate surveillance of intimate life chilled expressive activities, such as searching for information about reproductive health and using period tracking apps. Health professionals did not feel safe to speak out about the impact of new abortion laws. Harassment and threats directed at abortion clinics and at …

Self-Compassion Mediates The Relationship Between Childhood Adversity In The Prediction Of Later Health Outcomes Among U.S. Adults, Emily Bunch

Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events, such as abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction, that occur before 18 years old. ACEs are strong predictors of negative health outcomes, such as poor physical health and risky health behaviors (Felitti et al., 1998; Merrick et al., 2017; Hughes et al., 2017). Previous research has proposed self- compassion may serve as a robust protective factor against childhood adversity (Hazzard et al., 2021) and may help explain the negative consequences of ACEs. The present study investigated the relationship between retrospectively reported ACEs and health outcomes in the context of self-compassion. 458 U.S. adults …

Toward Robust Semantic Segmentation In Levee Infrastructure Monitoring: Enhancing Accuracy With High-Fidelity Synthetic Data And Ensemble Learning, Padam Jung Thapa

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Abstract: Levees serve as critical flood protection structures, but failures due to inadequate maintenance and extreme water pressures have led to devastating events such as Hurricane Katrina. Manual inspections are slow, labor-intensive, and prone to human error, necessitating the development of automated solutions. This study proposes an AI-driven framework for levee inspection utilizing deep learning-based semantic segmentation to detect rutting and enhance the identification of sand boils. To address dataset limitations, high-fidelity synthetic images are generated using DreamBooth for fine-tuning, while ControlNet adds structural constraints to enhance realism and consistency. A semi-automatic convex hull annotation technique enhances labeling efficiency, and …

Precooling Ventilation Air For Hospital Operating Rooms And The Affects On Terminal Box Reheat, Joel F. Luke Jr

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study evaluates the impact of climate on the energy performance of two HVAC system configurations—AL1, a conventional air handling system, and AL2, which incorporates a pre-cooling coil and discharge air temperature (DAT) reset strategy. Using EnergyPlus simulations, each system was modeled across multiple U.S. cities representing a wide range of climate zones. Results show that AL2 significantly reduces plant energy consumption, with an average energy savings of 66.61\% compared to AL1. These savings were nearly evenly split between reductions in heating and cooling demands.

A weather normalization analysis using cooling and heating degree days (CDD65 and HDD65) revealed a …

Collective Drip: Transformation, Hybridity, And Queer Ecologies, Vee Adams

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In my recent body of work, Collective Drip, I investigate the queer and trans body as a site for transformation. Through the lens of queer theory, ecology, and myth, I explore what it means to be becoming, always in process. Looking at hybrid bodies and symbiotic life forms, I’m interested in investigating what it means when the body is seen as a dynamic landscape? What happens when the community is reinvisioned as an ecosystem? Facing the current transphobic political landscape, this body of work offers queer and trans visions of pleasure and abundance.

Crossing The Mediterranean: The Italian Response To The Migration Situation (2014-2024), Avery F. Van Scoy

World Languages, Literatures and Cultures Undergraduate Honors Theses

As Europe increasingly mirrors aspects of its sociopolitical landscape from the first half of the 20th century, a critical examination of historical biases and identity has become imperative. The enduring myth of Italiani, brava gente, or Italians, good people, continues to shape national identity and inform attitudes toward irregular migration, contributing to a growing number of fatalities in the Mediterranean. These deaths are caused, in part, by migration policies that prioritize keeping irregular migrants from reaching Italy by outsourcing border enforcement and restricting access to resources for organizations that seek to aid vulnerable migrants. The endurance of Italiani, brava gente …

In this study, we synthesized a novel trimethoprim derivative, 4-(((2-amino-5-(3,4,5-trimethoxybenzyl) pyrimidine-4-yl)imino)methyl)benzene-1,3-diol (HD), by the reaction of trimethoprim with 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde. We then prepared metal complexes of this derivative with Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Ag(I), and Zn(II) and functionalized them with ZnO and Au nanoparticles. Their structures were confirmed through 1H NMR, mass spectrometry, FTIR, conductivity, thermal analysis, magnetic susceptibility, X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and TEM, revealing octahedral geometries for all complexes. Surface features were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) analysis. Pharmacokinetic parameters and target enzymes for HD and its complexes were computed using the SwissADME web tool, with the BOILED-Egg model …

Case Report: An Unexpected Case Of Spinal Cord Infarction, Julian Coz, Brittany Fera May 2025

Case Report: An Unexpected Case Of Spinal Cord Infarction, Julian Coz, Brittany Fera

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

We report a case of an 89-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with acute bilateral lower extremity weakness after physical exertion. His clinical examination revealed paraplegia, and imaging studies suggested spinal cord infarction (SCI) secondary to presumed atherosclerotic embolism, despite the absence of traditional cardiovascular risk factors. The differential diagnosis for acute paraplegia in the elderly is broad, including conditions like stroke, spinal cord compression, transverse myelitis, and tick paralysis. This case highlights the diagnostic challenges of SCI, particularly when the patient lacks overt risk factors for vascular disease. Despite aggressive management, including permissive hypertension and anticoagulation, the …

Case Report: Transverse Myelitis In The Setting Of Generalized Weakness, Aloysius Ibe, Brittany Fera

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

We report a case of a 79-year-old female who presented to the Emergency Department for generalized weakness and was diagnosed with transverse myelitis. The differential for generalized weakness is vast but for a patient who is able to perform activities of daily living with no assistance to now being unable to ambulate puts cauda equina, stroke, and brain lesion at the forefront until MRI gave the definitive diagnosis of transverse myelitis. Transverse myelitis (TM) is a neurologic disorder caused by inflammation of the spinal cord, specifically the material called myelin sheath that covers the nerve cell fibers.

Case Report: Cold Urticaria Diagnosed In The Emergency Department, Philip Carhart, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Cold urticaria can be primary (idiopathic) or can be due to underlying hematologic or infectious diseases. Here we present the case of a young female patient with no past medical history who was diagnosed with cold urticaria in the emergency department setting, using a cold stimulation test. Most cases are idiopathic. The reaction can be triggered in individual cases by exposure to cold objects or to generalized cold ambient temperatures, as was the case in the patient presented here. The physical response is most commonly pruritic wheals (urticaria). However, more severe symptoms may occur up to angioedema with hoarseness and …

Designing An Interactive Visual Analytics System For Precipitation Data Analysis, Dong Hyun Jeong, Pradeep Behera, Bong Keun Jeong, Carlos David Luna Sangama, Bryan Higgs, Soo Yeon Ji

Management and Decision Sciences

As precipitation analysis reveals critical statistical characteristics, temporal patterns, and spatial distributions of rainfall and snowfall events, it plays an important role in planning urban drainage systems, flood forecasting, hydrological modeling, and climate studies. It helps engineers design climate-resilient infrastructure capable of withstanding extreme weather events, which is becoming increasingly important as precipitation patterns change over time. With precipitation analysis, multiple valuable information can be determined, such as storm intensity, duration, and frequency. To enhance understanding of precipitation data and analysis results, researchers often use graphical representation methods to show the data in visual formats. Although existing precipitation analysis and …

Immune Response To Long-Term Lipopolysaccharide Infusion In Sheep, Laura A. Centanni

Honors Scholar Theses

Poor maternal nutrition (restricted and over-feeding) during gestation alters metabolism, growth, and body composition of offspring. It may also affect immune function. The purpose of this study is to determine the safety and efficacy of long-term immune challenge using lipopolysaccharide in sheep. Through two challenge weeks, each consisting of five days of lipopolysaccharide treatment, monitoring, and data collection, the treatment was found to be safe in sheep and effective to elicit an immune response. The data from this study will inform future studies on maternal nutrition in the University of Connecticut Animal Science Department.

The Effect Of Non-Profit Organizations On The Passage Of Climate Change Legislation In Connecticut, John-Henry Burke May 2025

The Effect Of Non-Profit Organizations On The Passage Of Climate Change Legislation In Connecticut, John-Henry Burke

Honors Scholar Theses

Connecticut has a long history of climate action. In this study, I looked into the effect that non-governmental organizations have on the passage of climate change legislation in Connecticut. Eighteen different climate policy stakeholders, including legislatures, non-governmental organization (NGO) staff members, youth activists and state employees were interviewed to gain their perspective on how non-profits forward climate initiatives. I found that non-profit organizations do have a significant impact on the passage of climate change legislation in Connecticut by working as providers of information to legislators and mobilizers of constituents. This impact can be limited by various political factors.

Characteristics Of Shallow Convection In Diverse Coastal Conditions, Zackary Mages May 2025

Characteristics Of Shallow Convection In Diverse Coastal Conditions, Zackary Mages

Electronic Dissertations and Theses, 2010-current

Clouds are an important component of Earth’s climate system. In particular, shallow convective clouds contribute to the vertical transport of heat, moisture, and momentum in the troposphere, and they generally have a net cooling effect on the planet’s radiation budget. Previous studies have often been limited by a lack of large observational samples needed to understand these clouds and their characteristics. This dissertation strives to overcome this limitation by analyzing observations of shallow convective clouds in two different coastal regions and using two different measurement paradigms. First, shallow convective clouds generated by cold-air outbreaks on the northern coast of Norway …
