Case Report: Hypercapnia's Hidden Dance: Myoclonus In A Patient With Co2 Retention, Kelsey Murray

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Myoclonic jerking is a neurologic phenomenon characterized by sudden, involuntary muscle contractions. While often associated with neurological conditions, myoclonic jerking can also be observed in patients with significant carbon dioxide retention. This case report highlights the presentation of myoclonic jerking in a 77-year-old male with a history of sleep apnea and obesity, who presented to the emergency department with hypoxia and elevated carbon dioxide levels. Despite the lack of neurological deficits, the patient experienced intermittent myoclonic jerks of his hands, which were attributed to CO2 retention. The report underscores the importance of recognizing myoclonic jerking as a potential sign of …

Dural Venous Sinus Thrombosis: Be Careful When You Sneeze, Arsam F. Nadeem May 2025

Dural Venous Sinus Thrombosis: Be Careful When You Sneeze, Arsam F. Nadeem

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Dural venous sinus thrombosis (DVST) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition that accounts for approximately 0.5–1% of all strokes. It is often associated with hypercoagulable states, infections, malignancies, and systemic inflammatory diseases. Clinical presentations are highly variable and can include headaches, focal neurological deficits, seizures, and altered mental status. Given its nonspecific symptoms, DVST remains a diagnostic challenge. This report presents a case of a young male who developed a persistent headache and had transient speech changes and was ultimately diagnosed with a dural venous sinus thrombosis.

Does Sports-Specialization Increase The Risk Of Injury In Youth Athletes?, Kinjal Shah May 2025

Does Sports-Specialization Increase The Risk Of Injury In Youth Athletes?, Kinjal Shah

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Sports specialization, defined as intensive, year-round training in a single sport for more than eight months per year, has become increasingly prevalent among youth athletes. While it is often pursued with the goal of elite performance, early specialization may increase the risk of both physical injuries and psychological strain. This risk is especially pronounced in individual sports such as swimming and tennis, where early and focused training is frequently encouraged. This study explores the association between early sports specialization and injury risk in young athletes, with the goal of identifying contributing factors and informing prevention strategies. Evidence suggests that while …

A Twist Of Fate: A Case Of Spiral Humerus Fracture After Arm Wrestling, Alec Mirchandani, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna May 2025

A Twist Of Fate: A Case Of Spiral Humerus Fracture After Arm Wrestling, Alec Mirchandani, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Fractures of the humerus are relatively uncommon, with spiral fractures typically resulting from rotational forces. This case report describes a 25-year-old male who sustained a right-sided spiral humerus fracture during an arm-wrestling match. The diagnosis was confirmed through radiographic imaging, and the fracture was successfully managed with closed reduction and posterior long arm splinting. This case highlights the importance of recognizing less common mechanisms of injury, like arm wrestling, in the context of humeral fractures. It also emphasizes the effective non-operative treatment of such fractures in young, healthy individuals.

The Impact Of Early Ambulation In Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Patients At The Oklahoma Heart Hospital, Kennedy G. Berger May 2025

The Impact Of Early Ambulation In Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Patients At The Oklahoma Heart Hospital, Kennedy G. Berger

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses

Background

Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedures are conducted across the United States to patients that have blocked arteries resulting in the heart not receiving enough profusion to adequately function. This is an invasive, lifesaving surgery that also welcomes complications post-surgery. 1 in 8 patients will check back into the hospital at least 30 days after their CABG procedures. Readmission can be related to arrhythmias and congestive heart failure; however, most patients see respiratory complications or infection (Shawon, et al., 2021).

Purpose

The purpose of this externship was to learn if early ambulation had a positive impact on patients who …

Home-Based Stroke Rehabilitation: Virtual Reality For The Elderly?, Joseph C. Moschella, Liam H. Kerrick

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Stroke remains the leading cause of long-term disability, especially within the elderly population. Nearly 50 percent of stroke survivors never achieve full independence post-stroke. This literature review examines the capability of virtual reality (VR), as home-based continuation of stroke rehabilitation for elderly patients. VR has the potential to improve motor recovery, increase independence, and reduce healthcare costs for stroke survivors. A comprehensive literature review has been conducted following the PRISMA guidelines to evaluate VR therapy compared to conventional post-stroke therapy. VR rehabilitation demonstrated improvements in motor ability, however it did not demonstrate significantly superior improvements when compared to conventional therapy. …

Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome Induced Pneumomediastinum In An Adolescent, Julian Coz, Christopher Schwartz, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) is a condition characterized by cyclic episodes of severe nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain in individuals with chronic cannabis use. Despite its increasing recognition, CHS remains underdiagnosed, particularly in adolescents, and can be associated with a range of complications, some of which are potentially life-threatening. One such complication is spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM), a rare but serious condition where air accumulates in the mediastinum without any clear traumatic cause. Although SPM is typically benign, it can present with significant respiratory distress and requires prompt identification and management. Here we present the case of an 18-year-old patient with …

Understanding Obesity Risk In Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities: Key Diagnoses And Factors, Elizabeth Kolaski, Wendy Aita, Jennifer Lecomte, Andrea Iannuzzelli May 2025

Understanding Obesity Risk In Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities: Key Diagnoses And Factors, Elizabeth Kolaski, Wendy Aita, Jennifer Lecomte, Andrea Iannuzzelli

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Background:

Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have obesity rates nearly twice those of the general population, leading to higher rates of diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and reduced quality of life.1 Genetic syndromes such as Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) and conditions like autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and Down syndrome (DS) feature distinct mechanisms driving weight gain.2 The burden of obesity in IDD exacerbates health disparities and strains caregivers and healthcare systems.3 Yet, comparative obesity prevalence and its drivers across specific IDD diagnoses remain poorly characterized.4

Hypothesis:

Obesity prevalence and underlying risk factors differ among IDD diagnoses …

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Background

Knee osteoarthritis (OA), a multifactorial degenerative joint disease with growing prevalence in aging and obese populations, leads to disabling pain. Traditionally viewed as mechanically driven, increasing research implicates systemic inflammation and metabolic and neuroimmune modulation. The gut microbiome—an ecosystem of commensal organisms regulating host immune, metabolic, and inflammatory regulation—has emerged as a potential contributor to OA pathogenesis and symptom severity. This review aims to synthesize literature evaluating associations between gut microbiota composition and knee OA, focusing on inflammatory pathways, pain modulation, and emerging therapies.

Methods

A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science. Inclusion …

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Background

In the world of regenerative medicine, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has gained much attention as a potential enhancer of musculoskeletal healing. However, despite promising results in many applications, the use of PRP in Achilles tendon ruptures (ATR) remains a topic of debate. While some studies suggest potential benefits in terms of pain reduction and early-phase healing, others report no significant difference in clinical or functional outcomes compared to standard treatment. This inconsistency underscores the need for further investigation into PRP’s role in tendon repair, particularly in high-stress, load-bearing structures such as the Achilles tendon.

Objective

This review aims to evaluate …

Cardiovascular Risk Factors In The Autism Spectrum Disorder Population, Christian C. Iannuzzelli, Andrea L. Iannuzzelli May 2025

Cardiovascular Risk Factors In The Autism Spectrum Disorder Population, Christian C. Iannuzzelli, Andrea L. Iannuzzelli

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

The population of patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have multiple risks and barriers that may make access to proper health care more difficult. After extensive research, some of these barriers may have been identified that pose greater risks to generating proper care for those with ASD. Some of these barriers include medical complexity, more sedentary lifestyles, poor food choices, as well as health comorbities. Some of these health comorbidities include hypertension, metabolic dysfunction, sleep apnea, and inflammation. This study aims to understand what barriers and risks for CVD are present in those with ASD.

Child Sex Trafficking In Pediatrics: From Screening To Comprehensive Care, Victoria Shwe, Tracy Lin, Nicole M. Leopardi

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Child sex trafficking is a significant issue in New Jersey, with minors making up 22% of trafficking victims in 2023. While screening tools exist to identify at-risk youth, there is a major gap in understanding the steps healthcare providers should take after identification to ensure appropriate care, support, and referrals. Current research highlights the lack of data on the use of trafficking screening tools and the absence of standardized post-screening protocols. Most pediatricians rely on referrals to social services or law enforcement, yet limited coordination between healthcare providers and these agencies complicates effective care. The shortage of child abuse pediatric …

Exploring The Effects Of Target Race, Gender, And Weight On Pain Perception, Catherine Awad, Theresa Miller, Azer Tuerxuntuoheti, Peter Mende-Siedlecki May 2025

Exploring The Effects Of Target Race, Gender, And Weight On Pain Perception, Catherine Awad, Theresa Miller, Azer Tuerxuntuoheti, Peter Mende-Siedlecki

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Healthcare equity is an essential right, and while the quality of care is assumed to be uniform, notable disparities in care are associated with factors of race, gender, and weight-particularly in the domain of pain evaluation and care. In experimental work, target race and gender have varying, and interacting effects on visual thresholds for perceiving painful expressions. Racial bias in pain perception is well established as participants see pain on black faces less readily than pain on white faces; gender also impacts pain treatment, where women are susceptible to having their pain discredited. Across two experiments, the influence of weight …

Effectiveness Of Mind-Body Therapy Techniques In The Management Of Chronic Pain, Esha Sharma, Kalyna Leshchuk, Maria Cox, Kaitlyn Koo, Emily Sarett, Sarah Chen May 2025

Effectiveness Of Mind-Body Therapy Techniques In The Management Of Chronic Pain, Esha Sharma, Kalyna Leshchuk, Maria Cox, Kaitlyn Koo, Emily Sarett, Sarah Chen

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

In this review, we aim to determine whether mind-body therapies—defined here as mindfulness meditation, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR)—can effectively improve pain management in adults with chronic lower back pain, particularly when compared to standard opioid treatments alone or used in conjunction with them. Our hypothesis posits that mind-body therapies serve as valuable supplements to current opioid-based treatment plans, potentially improving not only pain outcomes but also overall quality of life and psychological well-being.

By synthesizing findings from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses, this review builds on existing literature by narrowing the treatment scope and …

A Review Of Sutures And The Prospective Applications Of Nanofiber Technology In Suture Engineering, Hanna Brancaccio, Dominique Hassinger, Vincent Beachley May 2025

A Review Of Sutures And The Prospective Applications Of Nanofiber Technology In Suture Engineering, Hanna Brancaccio, Dominique Hassinger, Vincent Beachley

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Introduction: Suturing is a method to close surgical or traumatic wounds to promote healing. The ideal suture should have high tensile strength that loses strength at the same rate as the healing tissue gains strength, be easy to handle and form secure knots, induce minimal inflammation, and stretch/recoil according to wound contraction. While there are suture materials available for use in various procedures that fulfill most requirements, no one suture possesses every desirable characteristic, and limitations are still prevalent. Nanofiber geometry has a well-known ability to modulate cell morphology, attachment, gene expression, extracellular matrix production, and macrophage polarization in …

The Effect Of Mandatory Enrollment In A Gender Studies Course On Awareness Of Sexism, Gender Attitudes, And Views On Feminism, Sarah Pille

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

The patriarchy is a social construct that allows for the domination, oppression, and exploitation of women. An intervention that can be employed to counteract the outcomes of patriarchal beliefs in college students is gender studies courses. These courses aim to promote awareness of sexism, egalitarian gender attitudes, and positive views of feminism. When enrollment to these courses is made mandatory, it can create resistance to their educational goals. This survey study examined differences in gender and course type on resistance and the educational outcomes of gender studies courses (N = 104). The results of this study indicated that gender studies …

Her Hideous Progeny: Frankenstein'S Legacy, Adaptability, And Contemporary Prominence To Critical Story Telling, Ryan Penske

English (MA) Theses

This thesis situates the narrative of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley with two contemporary adaptations Get Out (2017) by Jordan Peele and Poor Things (2023) by Yorgos Lanthimos. The original 1818 Frankenstein text is composed of different discourses about race, gender, monstrosity, and what it means to be an abject other. As a text full of critical discourse, it has reached great popular culture legacy and has become adapted numerous times over the past two centuries. This thesis explores and acknowledges instances where the text has been adapted and applied to harmful discourses, such as British Prime Minister George Canning’s use …

Brujería And The Boundaries Of Power: Transgression And Punishment In Fernanda Melchor's Hurricane Season, Cassandra V. Garate May 2025

Brujería And The Boundaries Of Power: Transgression And Punishment In Fernanda Melchor's Hurricane Season, Cassandra V. Garate

English (MA) Theses

Brujería is frequently invoked as a symbol of resistance for those marginalized by colonial, patriarchal, and gendered violence. However, in Fernanda Melchor’s Hurricane Season, acts of brujería do not offer a clear path to empowerment or freedom. Instead, the novel reveals how brujería is entangled with the very hierarchies it seeks to subvert, rendering it an ambivalent form of resistance. Through the figure of the Young Witch, whose power marks her as both threatening and disposable, the novel illustrates how attempts at subversion remain constrained by systemic violence. Her practice positions her outside normative structures but does not protect …

Evaluating Cannabigerol As A Therapeutic Agent In Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Michael J. Viereckl May 2025

Evaluating Cannabigerol As A Therapeutic Agent In Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Michael J. Viereckl

Master's Theses

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is a prolific disease worldwide, with rising incidence and limited treatment options. The disease is progressive, what begins as simple lipid congestion within the cells of the liver eventually leads to incitement of inflammatory reactions and destruction of the liver which can further develop into cancer. Epidemiological data suggests that Cannabis use is associated with reduced incidence of NAFLD, and relatively recent changes in the plants legal status now affords us with the opportunity to investigate unstudied cannabinoids in the context of NAFLD. Further, growing popularity of these bioactive compounds as supplements warrants investigation into …
