Enhancing Phenotyping Accuracy For Selection Of Urochloa Spp. Tolerant Genotypes To Red Spider Mite (Oligonychus Trichardti), Paula Espitia-Buitrago, José Miguel Cotes Torres, Luis Miguel Hernández, Juan Andres Cardoso, Frank Chidawanyika, Rosa N. Jauregui
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
The red spider mites are a major biotic limitation to productivity for Brachiaria (Urochloa spp.) grasses in tropical Eastern Africa, causing severe economic losses mainly in the dry seasons. However, due to the lack of reports of integrated pest management strategies, genetic resistance can play a crucial role in Brachiaria-based livestock systems, minimising the impact of this pest. The objective of this study was to develop and validate a methodology for accurately categorising resistance responses in Urochloa genotypes to identify potential sources of resistance to the Western Kenya red spider mite Oligonychus trichardti (Meyer 1974). Accordingly, 25 genotypes of Urochloa …

A Recycling Route For E-Waste And Aluminium Scrap To Produce A2xxx And A3xx Al Alloys, Iman El-Mahallawi, Shaza Raji, Mayar M. Ali, Mai Mahmoud, Sara Atef, Mahmoud Tash, Serag Salem, Tarek Elmeligy
Mechanical Engineering
Electronic waste (e-waste) generation is significantly escalating, while traditional recycling methods, failing to meet sustainability criteria, are still used. The implementation of sustainability requirements calling for recycling will not be achieved unless intensive research is conducted for mitigating and tolerating the presence of accumulating tramp elements in the recycled alloys and even revising the existing standard specifications. This study explores an innovative approach to recycling electronic waste (e-waste) by integrating it with aluminum scrap through conventional melting techniques to produce high-performance industrial alloys aiming to develop novel aluminum alloys with enhanced properties suitable for various industrial applications. The experimental process …
Finite Element Analysis Of Incremental Sheet Metal Forming Process On Complex Shapes, Tamer Adel Mohamed, Mostafa Shazly, Abdulrhman Atef
Finite Element Analysis Of Incremental Sheet Metal Forming Process On Complex Shapes, Tamer Adel Mohamed, Mostafa Shazly, Abdulrhman Atef
Mechanical Engineering
Incremental Sheet Metal Forming (ISMF) is a flexible manufacturing process requiring minimum tooling setup. Practically, this process could be used to manufacture complex parts. However, the existing literature focuses on optimizing the ISMF parameters for simple shapes without considering the part's complexity. In the present work, finite element analysis (FEA) is adopted to investigate the effect of process parameters on the quality produced by ISMF. A finite element model for a conical part is developed and validated against published experimental data. The comparison between the simulation and experimental results confirmed the accuracy and reliability of the developed model. The validated …

Issues That Ministers Identify As Factors Contributing To Anxiety And Depression, Heather Sawtelle
Doctor of Ministry (DMin)
Although mental health is an emerging topic within the church community, the stigmatization of mental illness within ministers’ lives can create a myriad of personal beliefs that can lead to shame and discontent in ministers’ lives. Many ministers have daily stressors that compromise their mental health, and these stressors can contribute to depression or anxiety. This study defined mental health issues and described mental illness’ influence on ministers’ lives and the factors that contribute to mental health issues. This health condition, described as mental illness, involves significant changes in thinking, emotion, behavior, distress, and problems functioning in social, work, or …

Engraving Goddesses: Hendrick Goltzius’S Mannerist Prints, Emily Seils
Theses
This project analyzes the reception of Hendrick Goltzius’s (1558-1617) prints within the court of Emperor Rudolf II (1552-1612), specifically how his technical expertise in his mythological compositions presented bodily transformation as an alchemical act. He produced images that were intellectually coded for a sophisticated audience while simultaneously capturing the viewer’s gaze and emotions. In doing so he created, alongside his contemporaries, a niche market of high demand art and enabled the "viral" circulation of collectable prints among Northern European elites. Three main topics structured my approach. First, the distinctive development of Rudolf II of Prague’s prestigious art collection, the Kunstkammer, …
How Do You Know? Parsing The Infocalypse Using Art-Based Data Visualization, Michelle Sylvia Weintraub
How Do You Know? Parsing The Infocalypse Using Art-Based Data Visualization, Michelle Sylvia Weintraub
Theses
Since the advent of the World Wide Web, vast interconnected digital networks have increasingly provided access to diverse data sources for Internet users. Towards the turn of the 21st century, social media sites opened opportunities to produce and consume (i.e., prosume) data, empowering users to publish their own content online (Manovich, 2009). The ability to publish user-generated content results in more voices being heard, creating more seats at the proverbial table. However, more recently, persuasive media has increasingly been weaponized to disseminate misinformation and disinformation online (Howard, 2020). Consequently, the agency exercised by Internet and social media users is diminished. …

Benedictine Art And Design: How Color Psychology Can Positively Influence Department Enrollment, Claire Pauline Fink
Theses
This thesis examines how design strategies informed by color psychology and experimental aesthetics can be used to strengthen the visual identity and recruitment efforts of the Benedictine College Art & Design Department (BCAD). Following the recent addition of Graphic Design as a major and the department’s name change in 2021, there has been a noticeable gap in public awareness and printed promotional materials tailored to prospective students. Grounded in theoretical frameworks, such as D. E. Berlyne’s optimal arousal theory, and supported by survey responses from current Art & Design students, this project identifies key needs in marketing to prospective students. …
Elisabetta Sirani’S Timoclea: Baroque Agency And The Aesthetics Of Feminine Rage, Shaylen Grace Gardner
Elisabetta Sirani’S Timoclea: Baroque Agency And The Aesthetics Of Feminine Rage, Shaylen Grace Gardner
Theses
This thesis examines Timoclea Kills the Captain of Alexander the Great (1659) by Elisabetta Sirani as a foundational example of feminine rage within the Baroque period. By framing Timoclea’s violent act not as an outlier or solely reactive gesture, but as a deliberate, composed assertion of power, Sirani constructs a model of feminine agency that defies patriarchal expectations of female submission and passivity. Through interdisciplinary analysis grounded in feminist theory, formal visual analysis, and retrospective cultural studies, this research argues that Sirani’s Timoclea exemplifies the Baroque’s strategic use of socially acceptable iconography to veil explicit challenges to gendered expectations. This …

Rape is typically committed as a one-on-one crime. However, a relatively high number of rapes (2–27%) involve a single victim and multiple perpetrators. These cases are often referred to as “gang” rapes but are also termed Multiple Perpetrator Rape (MPR). Despite these data, there is a scarce amount of legal decision-making research on this issue. This study investigated legal decision making in an acquaintance rape case involving multiple perpetrators. This study was a 2(Defendant Number: one vs. three) × 2(Victim Intoxication: intoxicated vs. sober) × 2(Participant Gender: women vs. men) between-participants design. Online community members (N = 171) were randomly …
Cytidine Triphosphate Specifically Modulates Parb-Mediated Dna Compaction: Insights From Single-Molecule Analysis And Parb C-Terminal Lysine Mutagenesis, Lois Akosua Serwaa
Cytidine Triphosphate Specifically Modulates Parb-Mediated Dna Compaction: Insights From Single-Molecule Analysis And Parb C-Terminal Lysine Mutagenesis, Lois Akosua Serwaa
Theses and Dissertations
ParB is a central player in bacterial chromosome segregation, and cytidine triphosphate (CTP) is known to modulate its DNA compaction activity. This study explored whether CTP’s regulatory effect is due to specific molecular interactions beyond its known CTP-binding pocket. Using single-molecule flow-stretching and TIRF microscopy, we showed that CTP significantly reduces DNA compaction by wild-type Bacillus subtilis ParB, while ATP has no effect, supporting the hypothesis that CTP acts through specific recognition rather than general charge. CTP’s modulatory effect persisted across C-terminal domain (CTD) lysine mutants. Compaction was reduced in wild-type and K255A but abolished in K252A and K259A. The …

Contributions Of Citizen Science Data To Butterflies Of The Lower Rio Grande Valley, Akane Jazmyn Benitez
Theses and Dissertations
Citizen science-provided insect data inherently exhibits variability in accuracy. In the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV), butterfly occurrence reporting is predominantly reliant on citizen science contributions. My research compared fieldwork conducted monthly over a year to occurrence records submitted by visitors at the National Butterfly Center and in Mission, Hidalgo County, Texas. I hypothesized that butterfly occurrences at the Center would be maximized during the fall and minimized during winter and summer months. My research findings revealed that butterfly taxa richness is contingent upon the following factors: 1) the impact of citizen science submitting reports, and 2) monthly butterfly activity …

The study used a sample of 30 U.S. states covering fifteen years (2009-2023). It relied on data from the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) department and other secondary sources. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study …
Investigation Of The Effect Of Material Density And Particle Size On Mixed Powder Spreading Behavior In Powder Bed Fusion Process, Alfred Kofi Apianing Achenie
Investigation Of The Effect Of Material Density And Particle Size On Mixed Powder Spreading Behavior In Powder Bed Fusion Process, Alfred Kofi Apianing Achenie
Theses and Dissertations
Powder spreading marks a crucial step in the Laser powder bed fusion process, directly impacting the powder bed uniformity and paving the way for subsequent stages in the process. The laser powder bed fusion process depends heavily on the composition of the metallic powder feedstock. While most existing studies focus on pre-alloyed powders, limited work has explored the use of elemental powder blends as feedstock as used in in-situ alloying. Pre-alloyed powders are often costly, exhibit irregular morphologies and offer limited flexibility in material selection. This study uses Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations to investigate how variations in material density …
A Modular Paradigm For The Directly Efficient Representation Of Kinetic Laser-Driven Plasmas, Roland D. Hesse
A Modular Paradigm For The Directly Efficient Representation Of Kinetic Laser-Driven Plasmas, Roland D. Hesse
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
A natural inefficiency in conventional treatment of the plasma distribution arises from indiscriminate consideration of the contributions to field structure that are dynamically sourced from kinetic activity in disparate sectors of phase space. We introduce a range of techniques for model design to maximize representation efficiency without breaking key physical invariants indicative of physical reliability. An overview of varied adaptation to stable time-advance methods is given. Low-dimensional representation of a laser-driven plasma requires some creativity in differential structural modification, while direct efficiency is uncovered through the compression and rarefaction of a nonuniform momentum grid. These numerical models introduce embedded gains …
Exploring And Characterizing Organic Chemistry Students’ Meaningful Engagement In Science Practices, John Zhou
Exploring And Characterizing Organic Chemistry Students’ Meaningful Engagement In Science Practices, John Zhou
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Undergraduate organic chemistry frequently engages students in key science practices such as analyzing and interpreting spectroscopic data and constructing explanations through reaction mechanisms. However, these activities are often framed as procedural tasks rather than as tools for constructing knowledge. As a result, students may develop incomplete understanding of these practices, making it harder for them to see how scientific knowledge is generated and to use them meaningfully as tools for sensemaking. To better understand how students take up these practices as epistemic tools, three qualitative studies were conducted in this dissertation to investigate how undergraduate organic chemistry students reason with …

Effect Of Tai Chi Practice On The Adaptation To Sensory And Motor Perturbations While Standing In Older Adults, Arion Dey, Huiyeong Chang, Laila Shaaban, Armaan Suga, Genavieve Braden, Andres Bustamante, Jisang Park, Shenhua Zhang, Yang Hu, Manuel E. Hernandez
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Tai Chi provides an age-appropriate exercise to decrease fall risks in older adults. However, the exact mechanism underlying the benefits of Tai Chi practice remains an open question. Thus, this study examined how aging and Tai Chi practice impact adaptation to sensory and motor perturbations while standing. We hypothesized that older Tai Chi practitioners would exhibit a decreased reliance on visual processes as sensory and motor perturbations increased, relative to naive healthy older adults. Using rambling and trembling decompositions of the center of pressure (COP) and frequency-domain features, we examined changes in low (0–0.3 Hz), medium (0.3–1 Hz), and high …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis presents a Discrete-time Adaptive Sliding Mode Controller (DASMC) for control of a multicopter with a suspended payload. DASMC is designed to stabilize the multicopter at a desired position while minimizing the load oscillations induced by a significant hanging payload. The proposed DASMC minimizes the need for system-specific parameters like tunable gains and improves robustness to both external disturbances and model uncertainties compared with existing controllers. The controller is designed for direct digital implementation on a variety of multicopter platforms with considerations like discrete-time design, adaptive gain shrinking, and saturation handling. When deployed on a real multicopter in an …

Maintaining the durability of coastal concrete structures while reducing construction costs remains a formidable challenge. Drawing inspiration from the volcanic concrete used by ancient Greeks and Romans, this study explores the feasibility of using waste mullite powder (WMP) with a high alumina content in seawater sea sand concrete to conserve natural resources and enhance durability. The experimental results demonstrate that the incorporation of seawater and WMP exerts detrimental impacts on the flow characteristics and workability of cementitious composites. While the sulfate content in seawater and sea sand can bolster the early strength of sea sand seawater concrete, sulfate attack compromises …

Conventional controlled low-strength material (CLSM) is a self-consolidating cementitious material with high flowability and low strength, traditionally composed of cement, sand, and water. This study explores the sustainable utilization of off-specification fly ash (OSFA) and bottom ash (BA), classified as industrial by-products with potential environmental hazards, to develop eco-friendly geopolymer CLSM as an alternative to conventional CLSM. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was used as an alkali activator to stabilize and solidify both two-part (liquid NaOH) and one-part (solid NaOH pellets) geopolymer CLSM mixtures. These mixtures were evaluated based on flowability (ASTM D6103-17) and compressive strength (< 300 psi per ACI Committee 229 guidelines for excavatability). A cost analysis was also conducted. The results demonstrated that incorporating OSFA as a cement replacement increased water demand by 15% to meet flowability requirements, while BA substitution for sand led to segregation challenges requiring mixture adjustments. For two-part mixtures, higher carbon content in OSFA necessitated an increased water-to-fly ash ratio. All self-consolidating mixtures exhibited 1-day compressive strengths ranging from 5 psi (0.03 MPa) to 87 psi (0.6 MPa). One-part mixtures showed a 1% to 34% reduction in 7-day compressive strength compared to two-part mixtures, improving excavatability. Increasing the BA-to-OSFA ratio from 1:1 to 3:1 reduced water demand due to lower surface area but increased the NaOH/OSFA ratio. This study highlights the potential of geopolymer CLSM to reduce costs by up to 94% at current NaOH prices (USD 6 per cubic yard) while repurposing hazardous industrial by-products, offering a cost-efficient, sustainable, and environmentally responsible solution for CLSM production.

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Asphalt–rubber binders (A-RBs) have a long and deep history of use; however, little is known regarding the interrelated chemical behaviors and miscibility of rubber with the asphalt fractions [saturates, aromatics, resins, and asphaltenes (SARA)]. This study comprehensively attempted to address this knowledge deficiency by employing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to investigate the chemical evolution of A-RBs. A-RB interacted at 190 °C and 3000 min−1 for 8 h was deemed to have the optimal rheological performance. Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
With the rapid expansion of machine learning (ML) technologies across diverse domains such as healthcare, finance, and autonomous systems, ensuring secure and trustworthy training methodologies has become more critical than ever. Proof-of-Learning (PoL) has recently emerged as a foundational mechanism for verifying the computational effort invested in training ML models, thereby certifying the authenticity and reproducibility of the training process. Yet PoL, when deployed in isolation, remains vulnerable to sophisticated spoofing attacks that manipulate its subset-verification pathways and tolerance parameters. In parallel, model watermarking has become indispensable for safeguarding intellectual property and detecting unauthorized model usage. Motivated by these complementary …
