This decline is primarily due to a loss of interest, motivation, self-efficacy, and perceived utility value (Bathgate & Schunn, 2017; Britner, 2008; Kraft, 2017). With crucial topics such as climate change and the legitimacy of vaccines coming under scrutiny, it is vital for our society that we keep our secondary students actively engaged and motivated with the science that they are learning in the classroom (Kolenatý et al., 2024; Schlopsna & Scheersoi, 2024). The main goal of this project was to create a complete unit curriculum covering the topics of the …

Be Mindful: Examining A Brief Mindfulness Intervention On Educator Well-Being, Oceann S. Gittens Jul 2025

Be Mindful: Examining A Brief Mindfulness Intervention On Educator Well-Being, Oceann S. Gittens

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Teaching is currently rated as one of the topmost stressful occupations. Concerningly, chronic levels of stress can lead to poor mental and physical health, occupational burnout, and teacher attrition; all of which have a negative impact on student outcomes. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) are commonly used to combat occupational stress by enhancing educator well-being. There is compelling evidence to support these types of interventions with teachers. However, the length of many MBIs may make them prohibitive for the average educator to participate in them. The literature suggests that a briefer format may be just as effective at reducing stress, but more …

Twist And Snout: Head And Body Morphologies Determine Feeding Kinematics In Substrate-Biting Fishes, Tal Perevolotsky, Jacob M. Brotman-Krass, Yarden Ratner, Yael Avigad, Adam P. Summers, Cassandra M. Donatelli, Roi Holzman Jul 2025

Twist And Snout: Head And Body Morphologies Determine Feeding Kinematics In Substrate-Biting Fishes, Tal Perevolotsky, Jacob M. Brotman-Krass, Yarden Ratner, Yael Avigad, Adam P. Summers, Cassandra M. Donatelli, Roi Holzman

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Synopsis

Across teleosts, feeding by biting substrate-attached prey has evolved multiple times and is associated with convergent morphologies that include a deep body and an elongated, tapered head. However, the functional role of these morphologies in substrate-biting fish is not established. Here, we tested the hypothesis that these morphologies function as control surfaces that affect feeding kinematics during biting. To test this hypothesis, we used simplified physical models of substrate-biting reef fish and examined the role of head, body, and fin morphology in determining feeding kinematics that facilitate the removal of substrate-attached prey. Models simulated the swift lateral movement of …

Additionally, we investigated the role of preference in response allocation and shifts in participant preference following extinction. Results indicated resurgence across both conditions, with no consistent difference in severity between single and multiple alternative response conditions. However, within-session analyses revealed greater persistence of the alternative response for participants taught multiple alternative responses, suggesting …

Towards Scalable Taxi Demand Prediction, Yifei Shen Jul 2025

Towards Scalable Taxi Demand Prediction, Yifei Shen

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Accurate taxi demand prediction is essential for optimizing urban mobility systems across varying spatial-temporal resolutions and data conditions. Scalable taxi demand prediction refers to the capability of forecasting models to adapt to different granularities of spatial and temporal data while maintaining prediction accuracy, a critical requirement for practical urban applications ranging from fleet management to transportation planning. However, two fundamental challenges impede this scalability: data sparsity and multi-resolution forecasting requirements. Data sparsity, particularly pronounced in high-resolution predictions where numerous regions exhibit minimal activity, significantly compromises model performance. Concurrently, different urban applications necessitate predictions at varying temporal and spatial granularities, requiring …
