Coca-Cola Redux: The Problematic Absence Of Comparables, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Aug 2026

Coca-Cola Redux: The Problematic Absence Of Comparables, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

On June 25 a three-judge panel of the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals heard oral arguments in Coca-Cola v. Commissioner. It is very hard to predict outcomes from oral arguments, but two of the judges asked questions that suggested they were open to accepting the taxpayer’s “bait and switch” argument. They also seemed receptive to the treaty argument. Interestingly, there was less focus on the taxpayer’s marketing intangibles argument, which I regard as the better one.

Enhancing Cultural Competency Through Training In A Primary Care Clinic, Rogelio Perez Iii Aug 2026

Enhancing Cultural Competency Through Training In A Primary Care Clinic, Rogelio Perez Iii

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Cultural competence remains essential in primary care settings serving diverse populations, yet staff at a small Southern Texas primary care clinic reported no previous formal cultural competency training in workplace orientation or school. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice quality improvement project was to evaluate whether a brief, evidence-based cultural competency intervention improved clinician cultural competency scores. Madeleine Leininger’s Culture Care Theory provided the theoretical framework, Lewin’s Change Theory guided the change process, and the Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle directed implementation and evaluation. The problem addressed was the lack of structured training to support culturally responsive communication, patient trust, and …

Impacting Competency In C-Ssrs Suicide Risk Screening On An Inpatient Psychiatric Unit, Fidelis Sangye Aug 2026

Impacting Competency In C-Ssrs Suicide Risk Screening On An Inpatient Psychiatric Unit, Fidelis Sangye

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Suicide remains a leading public health concern, and inconsistent application of the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) may contribute to variability in suicide risk assessment and delayed intervention within inpatient psychiatric settings. The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a standardized C-SSRS-guided educational intervention on staff competency in suicide risk screening. Guided by Lewin’s Change Theory and implemented using the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) framework, this quantitative pretest-posttest QI project was conducted on an adult inpatient psychiatric unit. The intervention consisted of a 25-minute instructor-led PowerPoint presentation on standardized C-SSRS administration and evidence-based suicide risk …

A Case Report Of Myocardial Infarction Complicated With Blood Pressure Fluctuations Caused By Pheochromocytoma, Huiping Li, Wei Yang, Yu Feng, You Zhang, Gan-Xin Yan, Chuanyu Gao Aug 2026

A Case Report Of Myocardial Infarction Complicated With Blood Pressure Fluctuations Caused By Pheochromocytoma, Huiping Li, Wei Yang, Yu Feng, You Zhang, Gan-Xin Yan, Chuanyu Gao

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Pheochromocytoma typically presents with sustained or paroxysmal hypertension, but initial manifestation as acute non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) is rare. Peri-procedural hemodynamic fluctuations are often dramatic, making diagnosis and management challenging. We report a 51-year-old male admitted with chest tightness for 17 days. Elevated troponin and coronary angiography showing multivessel disease with total occlusion of the mid-left anterior descending artery (LAD) led to a preliminary diagnosis of NSTEMI. During percutaneous coronary intervention, blood pressure surged to 240/130 mmHg; intravenous nitroprusside caused an instantaneous drop to 95/55 mmHg, with rapid rebound to >200 mmHg upon withdrawal, showing no clear temporal relationship …

Threads Across The Atlantic: A Dialogue Of Feminist Writings Between Portugal And Cape Verde, Elliana Shillig Venancio Aug 2026

Threads Across The Atlantic: A Dialogue Of Feminist Writings Between Portugal And Cape Verde, Elliana Shillig Venancio

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the feminist literary traditions of Portugal and Cape Verde through a comparative analysis of Ana de Castro Osório’s Infelizes and Dina Salústio’s Mornas eram as noites. Separated by nearly nine decades and an ocean, these two works nonetheless converge in their insistence on women’s autonomy, bodily sovereignty, and resistance to patriarchal structures. Drawing on Hélène Cixous’s theory of écriture féminine and Kimberlé Crenshaw’s framework of intersectionality, this thesis argues that despite the significant differences in time, geography, and socio-political context that separate these authors, powerful threads of feminist consciousness bind their writing together. At the same time, …

Hidden Symmetries Of The Classical 3×3 Magic Square, Vijender Nallapu, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury Aug 2026

Hidden Symmetries Of The Classical 3×3 Magic Square, Vijender Nallapu, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

The classical 3×3 magic square is one of the most famous objects in recreational mathematics. Its defining feature is that every row, every column, and the two main diagonals have the same sum. However, beyond this well-known property, the square contains several hidden symmetries involving rotations, reflections, complementary pairs, parity, and balance around the central entry. In this article, we present an elementary exploration of these symmetries and show how the classical magic square provides a beautiful introduction to mathematical structure and pattern recognition.

Vedic Mathematics And Mental Computation: Fast Multiplication Techniques, Algebraic Foundations, And Historical Perspectives, Rakesh Bhatia, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Mental computation has fascinated mathematicians, educators, and students for centuries. Various computational techniques allow arithmetic calculations to be performed rapidly without the use of calculators or computers. Among these methods, several popular techniques are associated with what is commonly known as Vedic Mathematics. In this article, we examine a collection of fast multiplication techniques, including multiplication near powers of ten, multiplication by eleven, squaring numbers ending in five, and the vertical-and-crosswise method. For each technique, we provide elementary mathematical explanations based on algebraic identities and place-value representations.

Curious Patterns And Identities Involving Consecutive Integers, Carlo Cattani, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Consecutive integers exhibit numerous surprising patterns and elegant identities. In this article, we investigate several classical properties involving products, sums, divisibility, perfect squares, cubes, pronic numbers, triangular numbers, sums of squares, and Pythagorean triples. Using only elementary algebra, symmetry arguments, and mathematical induction, we establish a collection of identities that reveal rich connections among these classical topics. The exposition is intended for students, teachers, and recreational mathematicians, illustrating how simple observations about consecutive integers can lead to beautiful mathematical patterns and deeper insights into elementary number theory.

The Use Of Machine Learning Models For Predicting The Dielectric Strength Of Gases, Matthew Mileski, Paul W. Groth, Timothy S. Wolfe, Adib J. Samin Aug 2026

The Use Of Machine Learning Models For Predicting The Dielectric Strength Of Gases, Matthew Mileski, Paul W. Groth, Timothy S. Wolfe, Adib J. Samin

Faculty Publications

Technological advancements in high voltage systems have pushed sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) to its operational limits. Furthermore, this gas has other drawbacks including a high liquefaction temperature and a high global warming potential. Therefore, there has been an urgent need to find alternative gases with high dielectric strength (DS). In this work, density functional theory (DFT) is used to calculate molecular descriptors that are fed into an artificial neural network (ANN) and a random forest (RF). These machine learning (ML) models are then used to predict the DS for hundreds of molecules. A finite element model (FEM) is also used to …

Self-Regulation For Early Childhood Classrooms, Emily Fox Aug 2026

Self-Regulation For Early Childhood Classrooms, Emily Fox

Masters Projects

The ability to self-regulate is essential for young children's social, emotional, behavioral, and academic development. However, growing exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), toxic stress, family instability, and other social and environmental stressors has contributed to challenges in the development of these skills. Children with underdeveloped self-regulation skills are more likely to experience difficulties with executive functioning, peer relationships, classroom behavior, and school readiness, demonstrating the need for early intervention. The purpose of this master's project was to investigate the major social and environmental stressors affecting young children's self-regulation and to develop a research-based intervention to support self-regulation development in …

Enhancing Mental Health Support For Motor Vehicle Accident (Mva) Survivors Through Occupational Therapy (Ot)-Led Support Groups, Emma K. Gooden Ms Aug 2026

Enhancing Mental Health Support For Motor Vehicle Accident (Mva) Survivors Through Occupational Therapy (Ot)-Led Support Groups, Emma K. Gooden Ms

Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstone Posters

This doctoral capstone project, completed during a 14-week Applied Leadership Experience (ALE) with Georgetown-Scott County EMS (GSCEMS), focused on the ACOTE target areas of Program Development and Advocacy by creating an evidence-based, trauma-informed, occupational therapy support group curriculum for motor vehicle accident (MVA) survivors. A literature review and needs assessment identified a significant gap in post-crash care, as many survivors experience long-term psychological challenges—including PTSD, anxiety, depression, fear of driving, and disruptions in daily roles—despite care often emphasizing physical rehabilitation over emotional recovery. Drawing from observations of GSCEMS Peer Support and Critical Incident Stress Management meetings, current evidence, and ongoing …

Phenotypic And Biochemical Responses Of High-Yield Tomato Varieties To Salinity And Drought Stress, Shahida Ferdousee, Myung Hwangbo, Md Sakil Arman, Muhammad Abul Kalam Azad, Ajit Ghosh, Jongsun Kim

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Abiotic stresses can influence plant growth and productivity by causing physiological, biochemical, molecular, and morphological changes. Salinity and drought are increasing in frequency and intensity because of climate change. Therefore, this study assessed four high-yield tomato cultivars under 150 mM NaCl and 260 mM mannitol treatments to characterize physiological (i.e., chlorophyll level, root/shoot length, and relative water content) and biochemical responses (i.e., GLY I/II and DLDH enzyme activities, proline, and hydrogen peroxide). Results indicated that the four BARI tomato varieties showed genotype- and treatment-specific physiological and biochemical responses rather than a single uniform tolerance pattern. BARI tomato 2 maintained relatively …

Automated Classification, Measurement, And Semantic Segmentation Of Open-Web Joists From Point Cloud Data, Justin Raymond Dworacek

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a BIM-oriented methodology for the automated classification, measurement, and segmentation of structural trusses from point cloud data. A real truss point cloud and a complementary synthetic dataset derived from CADBIM Revit families were used to develop and evaluate the workflow. Classification was performed using a rule-based Python algorithm based on principal component analysis, side-view feature extraction, and family-specific geometric decision logic, while a separate family-aware script was used to extract key truss dimensions. Semantic segmentation was evaluated using a PointTransformerV3 model to separate truss and non-truss points in mixed point cloud scenes. The results demonstrated strong performance …

Beyond The Pencil: Creating Early Writers, Pamela L. Gernaat Aug 2026

Beyond The Pencil: Creating Early Writers, Pamela L. Gernaat

Masters Projects

“Schools in many countries are faced with the challenge of developing student writing proficiency. Identifying and implementing effective writing instruction for young, beginning writers play important roles in improving student writing performance. Providing effective writing instruction to beginning writers can promote writing development and minimize the number of children who encounter challenges in learning to write” (Finlayson & McCrudden, 2022, p. 1). Despite the amount of research that has been done on the importance of early writing instruction, many lower elementary students struggle with the ability to write and cannot keep up with the cognitive demands of written instruction. Many …

A Graphical Approach To Isospectral Unfoldings, Dallin Seyfried Aug 2026

A Graphical Approach To Isospectral Unfoldings, Dallin Seyfried

Theses and Dissertations

Isospectral reductions are mathematical techniques used to shrink a matrix, or a graph, into a smaller, dimensionally reduced form while preserving its spectrum. Simple graphs that share isospectral reductions also share quantum walk properties. As such we further develop the inverse process, isospectral unfoldings, to find graphs that share isospectral reductions. We first prove many conditions relating to isospectral reductions and unfoldings. Afterwards, we define two new unfolding processes: general unfolding which unfolds the graph one vertex at a time, and equitable partition unfolding which excels at larger graph unfolding. In particular, through equitable partition unfolding, we discover many graphs …

How We Benefit From Job Satisfaction: The Moderating Effect Of Informal Caregiving On The Associations Between Job Satisfaction And Physiological And Psychological Stress, Jensine Paoletti-Hatcher, Vincent D. Lai, Christopher P. Fagundes Aug 2026

How We Benefit From Job Satisfaction: The Moderating Effect Of Informal Caregiving On The Associations Between Job Satisfaction And Physiological And Psychological Stress, Jensine Paoletti-Hatcher, Vincent D. Lai, Christopher P. Fagundes

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Job satisfaction and the resource-building processes it supports may have meaningful implications for health and well-being. These processes may work differently for employees who have informal (i.e., unpaid) caregiving duties outside of work. Guided by conservation of resources theory, we examined two indirect stress-buffering pathways in a sample of 799 nursing home workers, measured four times over 18 months. We tested how job satisfaction affects gain strengthening (via higher positive spillover) and loss weakening (via lower work-family conflict), how these processes impact indices of physiological (i.e., C-reactive protein) and psychological (i.e., perceived) stress, and how informal caregiving status may moderate …

A Modeling Scenario For Cooling A Hot Vehicle In Florida, Jared Bunn, Bernadette Mullins, Elizabeth Hale, Jaeyoun Oh Aug 2026

A Modeling Scenario For Cooling A Hot Vehicle In Florida, Jared Bunn, Bernadette Mullins, Elizabeth Hale, Jaeyoun Oh

CODEE Journal

This paper presents a group project assigned in a Calculus 2 course that has students work to develop, analyze, and draw conclusions about a modeling scenario for cooling a hot car. Using a modeling-first approach, instructors supported the students in class throughout the beginning of the project, enabling the groups to complete the remainder of the project on their own. Students used parameter estimation to tune their models to provided data: one for windows being up, and one for windows being down. This project provides an example of how modeling can be introduced early in a calculus course, rather than …

Measuring The Tokenization Premium: A Cost Audit For Underserved Language Communities, Avijit Roy, Proma Roy, Hrishitva Patel Aug 2026

Measuring The Tokenization Premium: A Cost Audit For Underserved Language Communities, Avijit Roy, Proma Roy, Hrishitva Patel

Publications and Research

Large language models are increasingly deployed as general-purpose educational and technical assistance systems, but their basic infrastructure does not treat languages equally. One underexamined source of disparity is tokenization: semantically equivalent content can require substantially different token counts across languages, affecting API cost, latency, and usable context length before a model is even invoked. We introduce the Tokenization Equity Audit (TEA), a reproducible benchmark for measuring tokenization premiums in technical tutoring content. TEA evaluates three widely used tokenizers, GPT-4o’s o200k base, Qwen2.5-7B, and Mistral-7B, on a 120-item Python debugging corpus translated from English into Bengali, Hindi, Arabic, Tamil, and Yoruba. …

Teaching Writing With Confidence: A Professional Learning Series To Build Special Education Teachers' Knowledge And Self-Efficacy For Explicit Writing Instruction, Lindsay E. Bowen

Masters Projects

Writing is an essential skill used to communicate ideas effectively, assess understanding, and demonstrate critical thinking across educational and workplace settings. Yet, research demonstrates that a majority of special education teacher preparation programs do not offer standalone courses in writing instruction methods, leaving many special education teachers to enter the profession with limited knowledge of effective writing instruction for students with high-incidence disabilities. This project explores current research on effective sentence-level writing instruction for students with high-incidence disabilities, as well as a research-based approach for applying these practices in a systematic yet adaptable manner to meet the needs of individual …

Recalibrating Risk: A Call For South Asian-Focused Heart Failure Prediction Models, Nandini Nair, Dongping Du, Aiswarya J. Pillai, Swarna Mahesh, Mrudula R. Munagala, Howard J. Eisen, Balakrishnan Mahesh

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers

Background: Heart failure (HF) represents the final common pathway of diverse cardiovascular disorders, including coronary artery disease, primary myocardial pathology, and abnormalities of cardiac conduction. These conditions arise from an interplay of genetic, environmental, and psychosocial influences, making it essential to understand these determinants to improve risk prediction and prevention. Multiple biological pathways of inflammation, fibrosis, coagulation, oxidative stress, lipid dysregulation, endothelial dysfunction, and metabolic disturbances are shaped by inherited susceptibility and modifiable exposures. Together, these mechanisms drive HF development and progression, though their relative contributions vary across populations. Methods: PubMed and Google Scholar were searched for clinical, biomedical, and …

Effective Visibility In The Infrared Bands, Peter L. Dean-Erlander, Steven T. Fiorino, Ronald G. Driggers Aug 2026

Effective Visibility In The Infrared Bands, Peter L. Dean-Erlander, Steven T. Fiorino, Ronald G. Driggers

Faculty Publications

Visibility is an atmospheric metric for the comparison of terrestrial imaging conditions and locations. A limitation of visibility is that it is defined for the visible spectrum only, and there is no simple infrared equivalent. This study compares three reflective infrared wavebands: near-IR (NIR), shortwave IR (SWIR), and extended shortwave IR (eSWIR), to the visible band across a global set of cities to develop three rule-of-thumb functions for IR effective visibility. To accomplish this, a radiometric sensor model is combined with the Laser Environmental Effects Definition and Reference (LEEDR) software package to calculate the visibility of a black-and-white contrast target …

Demonstrating Superresolution In Radar Range Estimation Using A Denoising Autoencoder, Robert Czupryniak, Abhishek Chakraborty, Andrew N. Jordan, John C. Howell Aug 2026

Demonstrating Superresolution In Radar Range Estimation Using A Denoising Autoencoder, Robert Czupryniak, Abhishek Chakraborty, Andrew N. Jordan, John C. Howell

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We apply machine learning methods to demonstrate radar range superresolution using a denoising autoencoder trained without supervision. Focusing on the estimation of a single physical parameter, the separation between two scatterers in the subwavelength regime, we constrain the network to a one-dimensional bottleneck layer with its size matched to the parameter dimensionality. We find that the bottleneck layer forms a reproducible, monotonic mapping with the true separation, showing that the network learns a low-dimensional representation directly aligned with the underlying physical parameter. We further show that this representation preserves the Fisher information of the signal, indicating that the network recovers …

The Mathematics Of Calendar Patterns: Day-Of-Week Phenomena, Number Patterns, And Recreational Investigations, Vijender Nallapu, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury Aug 2026

The Mathematics Of Calendar Patterns: Day-Of-Week Phenomena, Number Patterns, And Recreational Investigations, Vijender Nallapu, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Calendars are among the most familiar mathematical structures encountered in everyday life. Beyond their practical use in organizing dates and measuring time, calendars contain a rich collection of numerical patterns, symmetries, and arithmetic relationships. Many of these patterns can be explored using only elementary mathematics, making calendars an attractive subject for recreational investigation and mathematical enrichment.

In this article we examine several mathematical properties arising from the structure of monthly calendars. We investigate arithmetic patterns associated with rows, columns, and rectangular blocks of dates, establish properties of calendar squares, and explore connections with modular arithmetic through day-of-week calculations. We also …
