Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Eating disorders (ED) are critical psychiatric problems that have alarmed the mental health community. Mental health professionals are increasingly recognizing the utility of data derived from social media platforms such as Twitter. However, high dimensionality and extensive feature sets of Twitter data present remarkable challenges for ED classification. To overcome these hurdles, we introduce a novel method, an informed branch and bound search technique known as ED-Filter. This strategy significantly improves the drawbacks of conventional feature selection algorithms such as filters and wrappers. ED-Filter iteratively identifies an optimal set of promising features that maximize the eating disorder classification accuracy. In …

An Evidence-Based Report On Digital Inclusion In Cornwall: -, Katharine Willis

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This report establishes Cornwall’s first comprehensive baseline on digital inclusion, combining quantitative survey data with qualitative insights to reveal the scale, nature, and geography of digital exclusion across the county. Cornwall faces a dual challenge of ensuring equitable digital skills and addressing infrastructure and affordability barriers. While overall digital use is high, significant groups remain excluded, particularly older adults, low-income households, those without qualifications, and residents in rural or deprived areas. These challenges pose risks not only to individuals’ access to services and opportunities but also to Cornwall’s social and economic resilience.

Explainable Machine Learning Surrogate Modeling For Exit Gradient Prediction In Hydraulic Structures Using Numerical Simulations, Prayas Rath, Jianting Zhu, Kevin M. Befus

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Accurate prediction of exit gradients is essential for designing impounding hydraulic structures, such as dams and levees, to mitigate seepage-induced piping failures. Conventional analytical methods often neglect boundary effects and anisotropy, limiting their applicability in complex geological settings. This study develops an XGBoost-based machine learning surrogate model trained and tested on 8,000 MODFLOW numerical simulations to predict exit gradients under varying hydraulic and geological conditions. The data set covers numerous parameters, including anisotropy, head differences, structure width, cut-off wall depth, aquifer thickness, and uninterrupted riverbed length. The coefficient of determination for test data is 0.88, demonstrating reliable exit gradient prediction …

A Multi-Source Remote Sensing-Based Geocommunication Tool For Global Flood Monitoring And Management, Ebrahim Hamidi, Brad Peter, Hamed Moftakhari, Hamid Moradkhani

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Global warming is expected to increase the frequency of extreme flooding, making rapid and accurate flood mapping crucial for effective risk assessment. Many governmental agencies and organizations are developing flood risk assessment tools; however, due to the lack of observational records, some rely on probabilistic generated data, uncalibrated simulations, or terrain-based methods, all of which are subject to various types of uncertainty. Although remote sensing provides valuable flood data with global coverage, single-source reliance is constrained by satellite revisit rates, resolution, weather conditions, and sensor limitations. To address these challenges, this study introduces a user-friendly application on the Google Earth …

All Works

In this study, particles of ground grape seeds were utilized to adsorb phosphate ions from a prepared solution, aiming to reduce phosphate concentration. Through a series of adsorption experiments, the effects of the adsorbent concentration, initial phosphate ion concentration, temperature, and pH on the phosphate ion uptake were studied. The removal efficiency of the phosphate ion decreased from 77 to 61% as a 25 to 45 °C increment in temperature was observed, which indicated the exothermicity in the adsorption process. The phosphate ion movement onto the adsorbent surface that exhibited the highest uptake value favored a neutral reaction environment with …

Validation Of A Methodology For Predicting Yield Acceleration Of Rock Blocks, Madison Haydn-Myer Aug 2025

Validation Of A Methodology For Predicting Yield Acceleration Of Rock Blocks, Madison Haydn-Myer

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

Rock slope stability is a critical concern in seismically active regions, where earthquakes can trigger sudden and hazardous failures. Predicting these failures is challenging due to the complex interactions between seismic loading and geological characteristics. This study proposes a simplified analytical model to predict yield acceleration based on the forces acting upon a block just before sliding initiates. A key parameter in this equation is the friction acting on the bottom surface of the block. As rock blocks are commonly formed by the intersection of sets of subparallel fractures known as joints, and the roughness and other features of those …

Squeezing Information From Radio Surveys To Probe The Primordial Universe, Dionysios Karagiannis, Roy Maartens, Shun Saito, José Fonseca, Stefano Camera, Chris Clarkson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A major goal of cosmology is to understand the nature of the field(s) which drove primordial Inflation. Through future observations, the statistics of large-scale structure will allow us to probe primordial non-Gaussianity of the curvature perturbation at the end of Inflation. We show how a new correlation statistic can significantly improve these constraints over conventional methods. Next-generation radio telescope arrays are under construction which will map the density field of neutral hydrogen to high redshifts. These telescopes can operate as an interferometer, able to probe small scales, or as a collection of single dishes, combining signals to map the large …

Wearing The Keffiyeh: Solidarity, Resistance, Activism, Catherine Harper Ph.D, Tasnim Alahdal, Rawan Gamal Agha

Arts and Design

The Palestinian keffiyeh is a distinctly patterned black-and-white woven double-cloth, hand-stitched scarf, originally used by farmers of the region. It became a prominent symbol of Palestinian nationalism from mid-twentieth century. Adopted by Yasser Arafat in the 1960s, it became a masculinist icon of Palestine’s politics of resistance, extended by female Palestinian liberationist Leila Khaled’s hijabi-like use, and then mobilised by wider leftist, activist, even Israel-critical Jewish, protest groups in the West.

In recent years, keffiyeh-patterned scarves, accessories, even dresses and skirts – in a range of colours – have appeared periodically in Western fashion stores, on couture catwalks, and …

A Three-Stage Matheuristic For The Blood Stochastic Inventory Routing Problem, Vincent F. Yu, Nabila Salsabila, Aldy Gunawan, Aldy Gunawan, Nurhadi Siswanto

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This research introduces a blood distribution system under vendor-managed inventory that considers uncertain supply and demand. We present it as the Blood Stochastic Inventory Routing Problem, formulating it as a two-stage stochastic programming model. To solve this problem, this study proposes a three-stage matheuristic that combines a perturbation heuristic, Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search, and an exact approach. From historical data of Surabaya Blood Center in Indonesia, six sets of new instances are generated under different settings. Computational results show that our proposed three-stage matheuristic outperforms CPLEX and a two-stage matheuristic by gaining optimal or better solutions within a significantly shorter …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the advancement of large language models (LLMs), intelligent models have evolved from mere tools to autonomous agents with their own goals and strategies for cooperating with humans. This evolution has birthed a novel paradigm in NLP, i.e., human-model cooperation, that has yielded remarkable progress in numerous NLP tasks in recent years. In this paper, we take the first step to present a thorough review of human-model cooperation, exploring its principles, formalizations, and open challenges. In particular, we introduce a new taxonomy that provides a unified perspective to summarize existing approaches. Also, we discuss potential frontier areas and their corresponding …

Fact-Audit: An Adaptive Multi-Agent Framework For Dynamic Fact-Checking Evaluation Of Large Language Models, Hongzhan Lin, Yang Deng, Yuxuan Gu, Wenxuan Zhang, Jing Ma, See-Kiong Ng, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Large Language Models (LLMs) have significantly advanced the fact-checking studies. However, existing automated fact-checking evaluation methods rely on static datasets and classification metrics, which fail to automatically evaluate the justification production and uncover the nuanced limitations of LLMs in fact-checking. In this work, we introduce FACT-AUDIT, an agent-driven framework that adaptively and dynamically assesses LLMs’ fact-checking capabilities. Leveraging importance sampling principles and multi-agent collaboration, FACT-AUDIT generates adaptive and scalable datasets, performs iterative model-centric evaluations, and updates assessments based on model-specific responses. By incorporating justification production alongside verdict prediction, this framework provides a comprehensive and evolving audit of LLMs’ factual reasoning …

Graph Positional Autoencoders As Self-Supervised Learners, Yang Liu, Deyu Bo, Wenxuan Cao, Yuan Fang, Yawen Li, Chuan Shi Aug 2025

Graph Positional Autoencoders As Self-Supervised Learners, Yang Liu, Deyu Bo, Wenxuan Cao, Yuan Fang, Yawen Li, Chuan Shi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Graph self-supervised learning seeks to learn effective graph representations without relying on labeled data. Among various approaches, graph autoencoders (GAEs) have gained significant attention for their efficiency and scalability. Typically, GAEs take incomplete graphs as input and predict missing elements, such as masked node features or edges. Although effective, our experimental investigation reveals that traditional feature or edge masking paradigms primarily capture low-frequency signals in the graph and fail to learn expressive structural information. To address these issues, we propose Graph Positional Autoencoders (GraphPAE), which employ a dual-path architecture to reconstruct both node features and positions. Specifically, the feature path …

A Note On Psoloessa Texana And Achurum Sumichrasti (Orthoptera: Acrididae: Acridinae) From Louisiana, Jovonn G. Hill

Midsouth Entomologist

During a 2024 survey in Kisatchie National Forest, Louisiana, Psoloessa texana and Achurum sumichrasti were collected, representing new state records. No prior records of P. texana exist for Louisiana, and while A. sumichrasti has been observed and reported online, no specimens were previously documented. These findings extend the known range of P. texana by ~320 km and suggest a broader distribution for A. sumichrasti. Their presence in xeric savannas may reflect Pleistocene-era disjunctions. With these additions, Louisiana’s documented grasshopper fauna increases to 41 species.

Trophic Roles And Climate-Driven Vulnerability For Benthic Invertebrates At Artificial Reefs In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Amanda Kirkland Aug 2025

Trophic Roles And Climate-Driven Vulnerability For Benthic Invertebrates At Artificial Reefs In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Amanda Kirkland

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Artificial reefs are deployed to enhance marine habitats and fisheries, yet their role in supporting secondary production and their vulnerability to climate stressors remain understudied. This dissertation investigates the trophic ecology and climate sensitivity of benthic invertebrates at artificial reefs in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Chapter 1 assessed reef food webs using stable isotopes from fishes, invertebrates, and primary producers across six reefs and two seasons. Mixing models showed that most fishes rely on benthic reef carbon, while suspension feeders consume plankton and sediment microphytobenthos. Isotopic niche analysis revealed functional diversity and seasonal shifts in δ¹³C and δ³⁴S, though …

When Engagement Meets Distraction: The Effects Of Multitasking Types On Learning From Video Lectures, Zubeiru Mahama

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Students often multitask with lecture-relevant (e.g., note-taking) and lecture-irrelevant (e.g., texting) secondary tasks during lectures and such behavior tends to be more common in asynchronous than synchronous settings. Two experiments investigated the combined and comparative effects of lecture-relevant and lecture-irrelevant secondary tasks on attention to and retention of a geology video lecture in a simulated asynchronous setting. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: lecture-only, lecture-relevant multitasking (i.e., taking notes during the lecture), lecture-irrelevant multitasking (i.e., completing a survey in Experiment 1 or instant messaging in Experiment 2 during the lecture), or hybrid multitasking (both note-taking and survey …

Grounded in the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and informed by federal legislation such as IDEA and ADA, this project presents a professional development toolkit designed to support preschool through second-grade teachers in creating accessible, responsive classroom environments.

The toolkit consists of a 90-minute training session, …

Fixing A 100-Year-Old Mistake, Michael J. Graetz Aug 2025

Fixing A 100-Year-Old Mistake, Michael J. Graetz

Faculty Scholarship

Posing the question of international tax cooperation versus competition reminds me of multiple-choice exams in which the right answer is “all of the above.” National interests determine which dominates at any given time. And in tax competition among nations, zero is not a lower bound.

In 1918, to encourage U.S. investments abroad, the United States enacted a credit for foreign taxes paid by U.S. companies and relinquished taxing rights to most foreign-source income. With the foreign tax credit, the United States assumed sole responsibility for reducing the double taxation of its residents and citizens. As the influential economist Edwin Seligman …

Dynamic Long-Term Prediction With Intermediate Event Information: A Flexible Model With Bivariate Time-Varying Coefficients, Yunyi Wang, Wen Li, Ruosha Li, Jing Ning

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The integration of time-to-intermediate event data and the evolving characteristics of patients to enhance long-term prediction has garnered significant interest, driven by the wealth of data generated from longitudinal cohorts. In this paper, we propose sequential/dynamic prediction rules by using regression models with time-varying coefficients. We introduce a class of dynamic models that not only incorporates intermediate event information but also leverages information across different landmark times. To address the challenge of right-censoring, we employ an inverse weighting technique in the estimation process. We establish the asymptotic properties of the estimated parameters and conduct extensive simulations to assess the finite …
