ABSTRACT
FULL HALLS, FULL HEARTS: INCREASING PERSONAL CONNECTION AND ENGAGEMENT AMONG CLASSICAL MUSIC AUDIENCES
Kate Christensen
Music Department
Bachelor of Music
Over the past several decades, it has been noted that numbers and attendance at classical music concerts is decreasing. Assumptions on why this is occurring point to a lack of connection and engagement between the audience and the music. This thesis seeks to find correlation between interactive techniques implemented in concert set up and audiences feeling connected to and having personal experiences with the music played. Interactive techniques, or engagement activities, are relatively recent additions to concerts, growing in …

Influence Of Exercise Opportunities On Bone Health In Laying Hens, Jaden Costner, Alexis Clark, Ahmed Ali
Influence Of Exercise Opportunities On Bone Health In Laying Hens, Jaden Costner, Alexis Clark, Ahmed Ali
Publications
Laying hens are often housed in environments that restrict movement, which may contribute to bone fragility and decreased welfare. These confined environments, such as conventional cage systems, limit exercise and result in poor skeletal development. This study investigates the impact of exercise opportunities on bone health in laying hens by comparing the tibiotarsi and humeri bone characteristics in enriched and unenriched housing environments. A total of 200 hens were housed in pens (20 birds/pen) from 0 to 40 weeks of age. Five pens, which served as the experimental group, were equipped with multi-tier perches and ledges, providing exercise opportunities. In …

Fisheries Research Report No. 361: 2024 Assessment Of The Status Of The Elasmobranch Resource Of Western Australia, Matias Braccini, Alex Hesp
Fisheries Research Reports
This document provides the 2024 risk-based weight of evidence stock assessment for the elasmobranch (sharks and rays) resource of Western Australia (WA). Gummy (Mustelus antarcticus), dusky (Carcharhinus obscurus), whiskery (Furgaleus macki), and sandbar (C. plumbeus) sharks are the most commonly captured species (~80% of the elasmobranch catch) and have been selected as indicator species for the status of the temperate elasmobranch ‘suite’. However, over 100 elasmobranch species have been caught in commercial and/or recreational fisheries in WA and, with the increasing number of elasmobranch species being listed in national and international protection lists, species-specific scientific advice on stock status at …

Parental post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms have been associated with various psychological and behavioral outcomes in their offspring. Utilizing a sample of (N=330) adult offspring of trauma-exposed parents, this study used self-report and behavioral measures to examine the relationship between parental PTSD symptom severity and adult participant’s romantic attachment insecurity, pathological personality traits, and facial emotion recognition (FER) accuracy for subtle emotional expressions. Additionally, it explored the role of maladaptive parenting behaviors on these associations. Results indicated that higher parental PTSD was associated with higher levels of parental care and an affectionate constraint parenting style. Additionally, parental PTSD was related …

Subtropical Marine Cloud Brightening Suppresses The El Niño–Southern Oscillation, C. Xing, S. Stevenson, J. Fasullo, C. Harrison, C. Chen, J. Wan, J. Coupe, C. Pfleger

Stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) and marine cloud brightening (MCB) are two proposed methods of compensating for greenhouse gas-induced warming by reflecting incoming solar radiation. However, their effects on the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a critical mode of climate variability, are poorly understood. Here we use ensembles of climate model simulations to show that deploying MCB in the subtropical eastern Pacific dramatically reduces ENSO amplitude by approximately 61%, while SAI has a negligible impact. MCB increases cloud albedo, which cools the subtropical eastern Pacific and triggers a loss of moist static energy. This cooling promotes atmospheric subsidence, dries the tropical Pacific, …
Rate Of Sea-Level Rise And Sediment Characteristics Modulate Deltaic River-Tide Interactions, Peter Bacopoulos, Celalettin E. Ozdemir, Matthew Hiatt
Rate Of Sea-Level Rise And Sediment Characteristics Modulate Deltaic River-Tide Interactions, Peter Bacopoulos, Celalettin E. Ozdemir, Matthew Hiatt
Faculty Publications
Due to sea-level rise, small river-dominated deltas (< 100 km2) are expected to become more exposed to tidal influences in the future. However, there remains a knowledge gap in the impending hydrodynamics of such deltas, particularly with the interactions between river and tidal flows. In addition to sea-level rise, river-tide interactions in these deltas depend on their morphology, which is influenced by the sand proportion in the particulate matter delivered by rivers. This study investigates river-tide interactions predicted for small deltas formed by different sand-to-mud ratios under various sea-level rise scenarios. Delta morphologies were generated using reduced-order complexity model (DeltaRCM), …

Factors Associated With Postpartum Depression Among Women Attending Postnatal Clinics In A Tertiary Care Hospital In Nairobi, Kenya, Cecilia Muthoni Njoga
Factors Associated With Postpartum Depression Among Women Attending Postnatal Clinics In A Tertiary Care Hospital In Nairobi, Kenya, Cecilia Muthoni Njoga
Master of Medicine in Family Medicine
Background
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a major mental health disorder affecting women during the postpartum period with a global prevalence of up to 17.22%. This prevalence has been shown to be higher in low and middle-income countries. In Kenya, about a fifth of women are affected. PPD can lead to poor infant growth and interference with maternal-child bonding. Additionally, women with PPD experience a lower quality of life and their children have an increased risk of developing and psychotic disorders later in life. Understanding the factors associated with PPD is crucial for early diagnosis and intervention. The study aimed to …

Factors Informing Referral Of Adult Patients To Palliative Care Services In A Tertiary Facility In Kenya: Physicians' Perspective, Donnah A. Opiyo
Master of Medicine in Family Medicine
Background The growing burden of chronic diseases underscores the urgent need for palliative care integration into healthcare systems worldwide. Despite its benefits, palliative care remains underutilized due to various barriers, including health system limitations, institutional challenges, infrastructure gaps, and individual provider factors. However, limited research has explored the specific factors influencing physicians' decisions to refer patients to palliative care. This study sought to fill that gap by examining the key determinants shaping referral practices in a tertiary facility in Kenya.
Design and Methods This exploratory qualitative study examined 22 physician specialists from five departments at Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi. …

Enhancing Postpartum Depression Screening Rates: An Educational Intervention For Primary Care Pediatric Providers: A Quality Improvement Project, Jasmine Shaterra Jones
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
This quality improvement (QI) project sought to increase postpartum depression (PPD) screening rates at a single pediatric primary care practice setting by implementing an educational intervention for pediatric providers. Postpartum depression is a common and debilitating mental health condition affecting many mothers worldwide. Postpartum depression impacts many women in the United States and affects all ethnicities, although rates may vary based on demographic and socioeconomic factors. Despite the American Academy of Pediatrics' recommendations for maternal PPD screening at one, two, four, and six months, well-child visits, national screening rates remain low, with a large number of cases undiagnosed. The current …

I See Sick People: Beliefs About Sensory Detection Of Infectious Disease Are Largely Consistent Across Cultures, Joshua M. Ackerman, Theodore Samore, Daniel M. T. Fessler, Norman P. Li, Et Al
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Identifying cues to contagious disease is critical for effectively tracking and defending against interpersonal infection threats. People hold lay beliefs about the types of sensory information most relevant for identifying whether others are sick with transmissible illnesses. Are these beliefs universal, or do they vary along cultural and ecological dimensions? Participants in 58 countries (N = 19,217) judged how effective, and how likely they were to use, cues involving each of the five major sensory modalities in an imagined social interaction during a flu outbreak. Belief patterns were strongly consistent across countries (sight > audition > touch > smell > taste), suggesting a largely …
