Genetic Algorithm Optimization To Maximize Sensitivity Of Triboelectric Mems Accelerometers, Yu Tian, Benyamin Davaji, Shahrzad Towfighian

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship

A genetic algorithm is used to optimize the sensitivity of a triboelectric MEMS accelerometer fabricated using CMOS-compatible processes. The optimization focuses on the structural parameters of an awl-shaped serpentine microspring (ASSM) connected to the proof mass. Constraints are defined by microfabrication standards and the available chip area. Three different constraint problems are considered, and the algo- rithm yields designs with maximized sensitivity in each case. Simulations under various sinusoidal vibration scenarios show that the optimized designs significantly outperform the previous version, achieving a 2.72× improvement at 1000 Hz and up to 20× at 500 Hz.

Experimental Investigation Of Strongly Coupled Finite Clusters In Two-Dimensional Dusty (Complex) Plasma, Ravi Kumar Aug 2025

Experimental Investigation Of Strongly Coupled Finite Clusters In Two-Dimensional Dusty (Complex) Plasma, Ravi Kumar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Dusty plasma, also known as Complex plasma, are ionized gases containing nanometers – to – micrometers sized particles (often referred as dust). The dust particles instantaneously get negatively charged due to high-mobile electrons present in the background plasma. These charged dust particles confined in a planar (two-dimensional) geometry interact through long-range forces (screened-Coulomb) exhibiting strongly coupled behavior, analogous to those in condensed matter and real 2D materials. This makes complex plasmas an ideal experimental platform to investigate the fundamental classical dynamics of strongly coupled many-body systems, such as phase transitions, configurational and thermodynamic properties. In condensed matter the direct observation …

Transcription Fidelity In The Face Of Oxidative Damage, Eastilan Gyiwah Appiah Aug 2025

Transcription Fidelity In The Face Of Oxidative Damage, Eastilan Gyiwah Appiah

Theses and Dissertations

It is very important that the process of transcription is correctly carried out in the cell for the faithful expression of the genetic code. However, should mistakes happen, they can result in transcription errors which interfere with the protein-making machinery of the cell. This will result in accumulation of proteins and dysfunctional proteins that have the potential of causing diseases like Alzheimer’s. Oxidative damage caused by hydrogen peroxide is known to cause transcription errors in organisms like yeast. It is therefore important to investigate the extent to which hydrogen peroxide can damage cells.
