ANTHEM 2.0 is a tool to aid in the verification of logic programs written in an expressive fragment of CLINGO ’s input language named MINI-GRINGO, which includes arithmetic operations and simple choice rules but not aggregates. It can translate logic programs into formula representations in the logic of here-and-there and analyze properties of logic programs such as tightness. Most importantly, ANTHEM 2.0 can support program verification by invoking first-order theorem provers to confirm that a program adheres to a first-order specification or to establish strong and external equivalence of programs. This paper serves as an overview of the system’s capabilities. …

Ws-Fall: Fall Detection Attention-Based Approach Using Wifi And Inertial Data Modalities, Alaa Elmor, Bilal Arain

Sustainable Machine Intelligence Journal

According to the World Health Organization, 37 million falls occur every year which leads to sever injuries that require medical intervention. In addition, more than 600,000 people end up dying due to falls making them the second cause of accidental injury fatalities worldwide. Specifically, the elderly are more prone to fatal falls. Therefore, fall detection systems are needed to allow medical professionals to intervene in such cases. Various wearable and non-contact fall detection devices have been developed recently. Since non-contact Wi-Fi-based methods are widely available and non-intrusive, they are gaining popularity. In this paper, we propose a state-of-the-art fall detection …

Political Violence In America: Turning Point Or Flashpoint?, Alan Saquella Sep 2025

Political Violence In America: Turning Point Or Flashpoint?, Alan Saquella

Publications

The murder of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk reignited an old debate in the United States: Are we approaching a turning point in political violence, or is this simply another flashpoint in a long, uneven history of partisan conflict?

Political scientists and commentators appear divided. Some warn of a spiraling wave of tit-for-tat violence, fueled by incendiary rhetoric and amplified by online echo chambers. Others emphasize that such acts are rare, often the work of lone actors rather than coordinated movements, and that the broader public overwhelmingly rejects violence as a political tool.

For security professionals, the challenge is not to …

Verkhivker

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Understanding the atomistic basis of multi-layer mechanisms employed by broadly reactive neutralizing antibodies of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein without directly blocking receptor engagement remains an important challenge in coronavirus immunology. Class 4 antibodies represent an intriguing case: they target a deeply conserved, cryptic epitope on the receptor-binding domain yet exhibit variable neutralization potency across subgroups F1 (CR3022, EY6A, COVA1-16), F2 (DH1047), and F3 (S2X259). The molecular basis for this variability is not fully understood. Here, we employed a multi-modal computational approach integrating atomistic and coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, binding free energy calculations, mutational scanning, and dynamic network analysis to elucidate …

Refractory Neutropenic Fevers In Aml: Unmasking Voriconazole-Resistant Invasive Aspergillosis, Abdel Martinez Borrego, Sahir Bhatti, Cesar Gutierrez

Research Colloquium

Background: Persistent fever in neutropenic patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) often raises concern for invasive fungal infections (IFIs), especially when unresponsive to broad-spectrum antibiotics and first-line antifungal agents like voriconazole. Invasive aspergillosis (IA), primarily caused by Aspergillus fumigatus, is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in this population, with mortality rates exceeding 50% in refractory cases. The emergence of azole-resistant Aspergillus, now reported in up to 10–15% of isolates in some regions, has complicated management. Patients may present with nonspecific symptoms such as persistent fevers, as well as concerning findings like cutaneous lesions—a clue to hematogenous spread—and …
