Novel Insights Into Wdfy3 Pathogenicity: A Case Report Of Microcephaly And Epilepsy, Pietra Spinardi, Gabriel Bordignon, Gustavo Moura Da Mata Machado Ferreira Pinto, Monica Alexandra De Conto, Daniel Almeida Do Valle
Journal of Pediatric Genetics
WDFY3 is a critical gene involved in neuronal migration, autophagy, and vesicular transport during brain development. Pathogenic variants in WDFY3 gene are associated with a range of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder ASD, epilepsy, and intellectual disability. We present here a case of a female child with a de novo heterozygous WDFY3 variant (c.10189A>T; p.Thr3397Ser), identified through whole exome sequencing. The patient presented with microcephaly, global developmental delay, and epilepsy. Despite the presence of microcephaly, neuroimaging (MRI) revealed no significant abnormalities, a finding consistent with previous reports. Previous studies suggests that WDFY3 haploinsufficiency alters synaptic density and mitochondrial …

Journal of Pediatric Genetics
The Gorham-Stout’s disease, also known as massive osteolysis or evanescent bone disease; is an extremely rare disease characterized by a proliferation of intraosseous lymphatic channels causing progressive osteolysis. Usually, surgery, sclerotherapy and radiotherapy have been reserved for local and symptomatic control of the disease, while medical treatments have presented variable results that are not entirely satisfactory according to literature. The recent identification of germline-activating somatic mutations in the PIK3CA gene has opened the way to treatment with mTOR inhibitors, being Sirolimus an effective option with a low incidence of serious adverse effects. We present a patient diagnosed with GSD and …

This cohort study of 48 unrelated probands with rare monogenic childhood hypotonia was designed to assess the clinical presentations, spectrum of disorders, and utility of exome sequencing in selected cases where preliminary genetic tests did not sufficiently explain the etiology. Clinically 56.3% of the cases appeared to be of peripheral hypotonia, 33.3% cases were of central hypotonia, and remaining 10.4% were mixed hypotonia cases. Exome sequencing was able to provide a diagnosis in 52.1% cases in the entire cohort of rare monogenic childhood hypotonia. Majority (41.6%) of the probands had a clinical diagnosis of congenital myopathy/muscular dystrophy in the cohort …

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Lung cancer is among the most diagnosed cancers worldwide, and its co-occurrence with coronary heart disease is life-threatening. Osimertinib is the standard treatment for epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The addition of pemetrexed and carboplatin increases not only the efficacy but also the cardiotoxicity risk. We report a 59-year-old woman with NSCLC alongside brain, liver, and spleen metastases, who developed cardiovascular events following cancer therapy. With advanced imaging and multidisciplinary intervention, remarkable remission was achieved over two years. Reporting this case contributes to the understanding of its presentation and diagnostic challenges.

Despite their interest in completing advance directives (ADs), persons experiencing homeless-ness (PEH) appear to have fewer surrogate decision-makers and limited opportunities for ad-vance care planning (ACP). Nursing students and faculty, a hospital bioethicist, and social ser-vice agency staff formed a community-academic partnership that helps PEH complete advance directives. This unique service-learning opportunity offers a model for assisting vulnerable pop-ulations with advance care planning. Model effectiveness and limitations are described from each partner’s perspective in their own words.

Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies
This study shows results of development of the ``frame-boiler'' system with hysteresis dampers analytical model. Hysteresis dampers are used as boiler antiseismic bracing. It is noted that simplified analytical models are necessary at the stage of preliminary iterative calculations, when a CAE-modeling is impractical due to significant time costs. The authors have proposed 2 options of analytical models: 2-mass model and 3-mass model. The differential equations of motion for each model are written below. The results of the calculation for seismic impacts are compared with the finite element model. It is shown that 3-mass model gives good match of results …

Iraq has been suffering from a rising surface air temperature (SAT), causing a general deterioration in ecosystems. Climate sensitivity (CS) which refers to the increase in average SAT caused by a duplication of Carbon Dioxide Concentration [CO2], was estimated by transient local climate response (TLCR) and equilibrium local CS (ELCS). The time series of the spatial annual averages for both [CO2] and air temperature were analyzed and a linear regression model was also used to find annual trends in SAT and [CO2]. Based on historical yearly data for CO2 concentrations (2003–2016), CO2 …

Snow accumulation on photovoltaic (PV) panels can cause significant energy losses in cold climates. While drone-based monitoring offers a scalable solution, real-world challenges like varying illumination can hinder accurate snow detection. We previously developed a YOLO-based drone system for snow coverage detection using a Fixed Thresholding segmentation method to discriminate snow from the solar panel; however, it struggled in challenging lighting conditions. This work addresses those limitations by presenting a reliable drone-based system to accurately estimate the Snow Coverage Percentage (SCP) over PV panels. The system combines a lightweight YOLOv11n-seg deep learning model for panel detection with an adaptive image …

Beyond Personal Responsibility: Government Support For The Substantive Human Condition, Martha T. Mccluskey
Contributions to Books
Government protection against systemic harm to human well-being is stymied by the liberal idea that power is most legitimately wielded by autonomous individuals taking personal responsibility for their substantive well-being. Instead, a robust vision of democracy and socioeconomic justice requires grounding legitimate power in institutional responsibility, replacing the formal individual actor of liberal theory with the universally embodied, embedded human subject developed in Martha Fineman’s Vulnerability Theory. This chapter connects the message of personal responsibility in neoliberal US welfare reform policies to rationales defending the government’s failure to alleviate systemic human harm in the 2008 financial crisis and the accelerating …

Debt Accumulation In Fossil Fuel-Reliant Localities During The Shale Boom And Implications For The Energy Transition, Brandon Charles
Center for Policy Research
The energy transition away from fossil fuels poses long-term economic risks for communities reliant on oil and natural gas production and some may face exceptionally difficult challenges in adapting to the change. Bonds issued by these localities during the shale boom may undermine their financial resilience as shale activity dwindles. Declining tax revenue may undermine their ability to service the debt and maintain the associated physical assets. This study addresses the extent to which local governments in oil- and natural gas-producing communities accumulated significantly more municipal debt during the shale boom than other communities. The analysis uses bond issuance data …

A mathematical task rooted in social and/or political contexts has the potential to engage students in exploring their own real-ities and learning about the realities of others while building their mathematical knowledge. While there are planning and in-structional practices recommended for these types of tasks, no single practice can fully capture the nuances and challenges thatteachers might encounter. Therefore, this study identified dilemmas encountered by a team of mathematics education research-ers while planning a mathematical task rooted in social and/or political contexts. Using qualitative analysis, the researchersidentified three planning dilemmas: (a) what social and/or political goal to establish, (b) how …
