Confinement-Induced Resonances For The Creation Of Quasi-One-Dimensional Ultracold Gases Of Alkali–Alkaline-Earth Dimers, Lorenzo Oghittu, Premjith Thekkeppatt, Nirav P. Mehta, Seth T. Rittenhouse, Klaasjan Van Druten, Florian Schreck, Arghavan Safavi-Naini

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research

We theoretically investigate the role of confinement-induced resonances (CIRs) in low-dimensional ultracold atomic mixtures in the formation of weakly bound dimers. To this end, we examine the scattering properties of a binary atomic mixture confined by a quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) potential. In this regime, the interspecies two-body interaction is modeled as an effective 1D zero-range pseudopotential, with a coupling strength g1D derived as a function of the three-dimensional scattering length a. This framework enables the study of CIRs in harmonically confined systems, with particular attention paid to the case of mismatched transverse trapping frequencies of the two atomic species. Finally, we …

Electron Yields Of Lunar Regolith Simulant Layers, Christopher Vega, Matthew Robertson, Thomas Keaton, Heather Allen, Jr Dennison

Journal Articles

The charging of bulk lunar regolith has been recognized since the Apollo era as an immediate and critical issue facing our return to the moon. Accurate electron yield (EY) measurements of bulk highly insulating granular materials—which largely determine how such particles charge through interactions with space environments—are lacking due to many experimental complexities that have led to a critical knowledge gap. Such knowledge is essential for addressing fundamental science and myriad important lunar applications and simulations related to lunar dust and regolith electrostatic charging. The few prior EY studies of lunar dust were limited due to severe charging effects and …

Optimal Control In Combination Therapy For Heterogeneous Cell Populations With Drug Synergies., Simon F. Martina-Perez, Samuel W S Johnson, Rebecca M. Crossley, Jennifer C. Kasemeier, Paul M. Kulesa, Ruth E. Baker

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Cell heterogeneity plays an important role in patient responses to drug treatments. In many cancers, it is associated with poor treatment outcomes. Many modern drug combination therapies aim to exploit cell heterogeneity, but determining how to optimise responses from heterogeneous cell populations while accounting for multi-drug synergies remains a challenge. In this work, we introduce and analyse a general optimal control framework that can be used to model the treatment response of multiple cell populations that are treated with multiple drugs that mutually interact. In this framework, we model the effect of multiple drugs on the cell populations using a …

An Examination Of The Experiences Of An African American Male Diver On A Power Four Swim Team: An Elite Interview, Steven N. Waller Ph.D., Tiffany M. Quash Ph.D.

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Despite the incremental increase in the number of Black people who are learning to swim, the number of Black divers has not kept pace. In the NCAA Database, swimmers and divers were not segmented; thus, they all appear in the category of “swimming” by race and sex. When viewing the 2024 Division I NCAA Demographics Database, 89 (.02%) of 4307 student-athletes participating in swimming were Black women. For men, the data is equally dismal, revealing that 81 (.03%) of 2,608 student-athletes who were identified as swimmers were Black. The purpose of this research note is to examine the developmental experiences …

The Adjacent Possible, Marcus O’Donnell Prof Oct 2025

The Adjacent Possible, Marcus O’Donnell Prof

Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai

My hybrid traditional-digital prints explore pattern, chaos and complexity at the intersection of bodies, sexuality, and landscape. The ‘Strange appearance’ series overprints photogravure key plates, (developed through layering several original images of urban gardens) onto multiple colour pigment prints of close focus details of flowers or foliage. This process creates micro landscapes and variants which change in colour and form as layers intersect. This exhibition uses three different key plates over a repeated sequence of the same twenty colour underprints. These different approaches to variation, multiplicity and adjacency speak to both possibility and mutation: the open and the determined aspects …
