Reconnecting Museum Exhibits With The Contemporary Context Through The "Digital Birch Bark Jar": A Postphenomenological Approach To Interactive Digital Visualisation, Zhiqiang Li
IASDR Conference Series
Paul Klee’s statement that “a drawing is simply a line going for a walk” finds new resonance in the contemporary museum context. Through digit is ation and interaction, museum artifacts are no longer static objects but dynamic “lines” undergoing continuous transformation. This paper presents The Digital Birch Bark Jar, an interactive visualisation project integrating Internet of Things and parametric design technologies. The installation translates real-time environmental data into evolving 3D forms that visitors can further materialise through 3D printing. Grounded in Don Ihde’s post phenomenological theory of technological mediation as an experiential design framework, the study demonstrates how digital generation …

Squeeze Machine: Designing Uncomfortable Interactions For Critical Heritage, Piyakorn Koowattanataworn, Anders Sundnes Løvlie, Steve Benford
IASDR Conference Series
We present Squeeze Machine, an experimental interactive experience, aiming for a critical-heritage exhibition at MUNCH museum. Our design process weaved together three research threads: (1) designing embodied interaction for critical heritage, (2) using uncomfortable interaction, and (3) facilitating critical reflection focusing on social beliefs of authority. We conducted interaction tests at a university laboratory (N=16, 8 pairs). Participant responses illustrate that Squeeze Machine could evoke visitors to reflect on their personal experience, increase visitor curiosity about the exhibition and support reflection on curated artefacts. The exploration also brought out some challenges for applying discomfort through control in an exhibition context.

The Design Research Of "Tema": Exploring Intentional Acts Of Taking Time And Effort In A Contemporary Society, Tianshuo Lu, Takuma Ishikawa
IASDR Conference Series
In today’s hyper-efficient world, why do people engage in activities that require time and effort? This research explores the causes and meanings of such behaviors through the Japanese concept of “tema”, defined as intentional, non-optimized engagement where the process holds intrinsic value. Using workshops and qualitative interviews, we identify four key elements of “tema”: time, body, creativity, and value. These deliberate actions foster personal meaning, emotional satisfaction, and deeper connection with the material world. Building on these insights, we propose a design potential that applies “tema” as a framework for creative practice. Rather than reinforcing a binary between efficiency and …

In Taiwan's machine tool industry, controller Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) are typically developed by engineers, leading to significant usability issues that hinder efficiency and global competitiveness. Integrating professional designers is often impeded by industry knowledge gaps and technical constraints. Addressing this, our Research through Design (RtD) project explores how to empower engineers to create user-centric interfaces. We present the development of a specialized UI kit and an accompanying Visual Studio extension, purpose-built for the industrial context. The toolkit provides a modular, design-system-based framework, enabling engineers without formal design training to rapidly build intuitive and consistent HMIs. This work offers a practical …

The recent surge of generative AI has accelerated arguments on whether it can facilitate and hamper creative thought processes. In this work, we explore a framework for human–AI co-creativity within a closed academic community. We designed a multi-session interdisciplinary workshop in which university researchers created a custom GPT-based conversational assistant collaboratively and had guided interactions with the assistant. In these workshops, we presented a novel "middle-voice" (chūdō-teki in Japanese) co-creation methodology, where AI was placed on an equal footing as a co- creator, not as a tool nor as a source of wisdom. We also gathered qualitative data on how …
