A Multi-Case Study Exploring Ncaa Division I Athletic Departments’ Mental Health Culture, Kim Tolentino, Dana K. Voelker, Brent Oja, Sofia España Pérez, Sam Zizzi

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

Mental health and psychological well-being continue to be significant areas of concern for collegiate student-athletes. Researchers have identified the perceived barriers preventing student-athletes from using mental health services which include lack of knowledge, limited access, and perceived negative stigma (e.g., Harris & Maher, 2023; Yoon & Petrie, 2023). Organizational culture, loosely defined as a group’s accumulated shared learning (Schein & Schein, 2017), plays an important role in guiding the behaviors of its members. Developing a positive athletic department culture around mental health can, in turn, be beneficial to increasing student-athletes’ help-seeking behaviors. The purpose of this study was to explore …

When Students Snap: Thoughts About Radical Study Within The Impasse Of Trinity College, Isaac Kamola Dec 2025

When Students Snap: Thoughts About Radical Study Within The Impasse Of Trinity College, Isaac Kamola

#CritEdPol: Journal of Critical Education Policy Studies at Swarthmore College

This contribution explores two Instagram accounts—@BlackAtTrin and @TrinSurvivors— published during the summer of 2020 which, in the context of nation-wide protests against the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, became important forums for documenting, publicizing, and archiving the lived student experiences of systemic racism and sexual violence at Trinity College. Using Eli Meyerhoff’s book Beyond Education as a framework, this essay examines how students and alumni “snapped” at the college, making demands in ways that attempted to grapple with the impasse of decades of systemic racism and misogyny at Trinity, and society at large. These efforts to confront the …

Using Electronic Medical Records To Estimate The Prevalence Of Pediatric Obesity In Mississippi, Brian D. Christman, Abigail Gamble, Sonia Jain, Kalon Kl Ho, Lei Zhang, William B. Hillegass

Journal of Public Health in the Deep South

Background: Pediatric obesity is a major public health concern in Mississippi. However, existing surveillance systems, including the Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance System, National Survey of Children's Health, and Child and Youth Prevalence of Obesity Survey, are limited by self-reported data, restricted age ranges, and incomplete subgroup coverage.

Purpose: This study evaluates the plausibility of using electronic medical records to improve population-level surveillance of pediatric obesity in Mississippi while addressing issues of data completeness, bias, and representativeness.

Methods: Electronic medical records from 40,215 patients aged 2–19 years who received care at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (2013–2022) were analyzed via …

Assessing Education And Training Of Developmental Screening Tools Among Residents In A Southern Academic Medical Center, Paige Seabrook, Dustin E. Sarver, Susan Buttross

Journal of Public Health in the Deep South

Background: Developmental disabilities are highly common. Early identification of developmental disabilities is critical, but many practitioners, including those in Southern U.S. states like Mississippi, do not utilize developmental screening tools.

Purpose: We aimed to identify modifiable targets within resident training experiences and their correlates using a quality improvement approach to serve as a baseline for intervention efforts.

Methods: Medical residents (N = 57) in pediatrics (n = 26), combined medicine-pediatrics (n = 12), and family medicine (n = 19) completed a survey assessing training, attitudes, practices, and perceived barriers regarding using screening tools. Perceived barriers were …

“Mud, Mud, Mud To The Right Of Us”: How Canadian Reconnaissance Regiments Adapted To The Terrain Of The Scheldt Estuary, Victoria Sotvedt

Canadian Military History

During the Battle of the Scheldt, Canadian reconnaissance regiments played a crucial role in gathering information for their attached divisions and participating in combat operations. To be effective in this role, these regiments needed to maintain a high level of mobility and be adept at operating at or beyond the divisional front. As First Canadian Army moved into the Scheldt Estuary in autumn 1944, the reconnaissance regiments’ mobility and efficiency were challenged by the difficult terrain. These regiments therefore developed new techniques to allow them to continue fulfilling their role despite these challenges, including the adoption of new weaponry and …

The Clear-Up: The Anglo-American Experience In Southeastern Italy, 1943–1946, Amy Muschamp

Canadian Military History

As Allied forces gradually ascended Italy in the arduous Italian Campaign, the newly liberated country was left in chaos. Focusing on the often-overlooked experiences of Southeastern Italy, and in particular the area known today as the region of Molise, this article presents an analysis of the Allied clear-up operation within this tumultuous situation. The mass movement of people southwards has been described as the “real drama” of the war for those living in Molise and the experiences of the people here are representative of many in the rural south. Moreover, knowledge gained by Allied forces here would impact future operations …

Steam Distillation And Characterization Of Star Anise: Investigating Aroma And Aromaticity, Natalie Brattain Dec 2025

Steam Distillation And Characterization Of Star Anise: Investigating Aroma And Aromaticity, Natalie Brattain

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

"Steam distillation is a widely used technique for extracting essential oils from plant materials, allowing for the separation of volatile compounds while minimizing thermal degradation. In this study, steam distillation was used to extract the essential oil of Illicium verum (Star Anise) to investigate the relationship between aroma and aromaticity. While ""aroma"" refers to the sensory perception of a substance’s scent, ""aromaticity"" is a chemical property related to the stability of conjugated ring systems. This distinction for our compound was explored by using chemical characterization of the extracted oil. Following the steam distillation process, gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry …

Mission And Weapon Drive Fleet Design, Jeff Vandenengel Dec 2025

Mission And Weapon Drive Fleet Design, Jeff Vandenengel

Naval War College Review

Today, the U.S. Navy’s primary mission is changing from power projection to sea control, and as a result its primary weapon is changing from the aerial bomb to the missile. Those shifts in mission and weapon will inevitably drive the Navy to a new fleet design, one different from the carrier-centric model that has dominated since World War II.
