Fixed Dune Grassland Mapping, Ronica Reyes, Madison Mayenschein, Jared Cruz
Environmental Science & Management Senior Capstones
Our study applies Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and field-based data collection to map and assess a degraded fixed dune grassland parcel in Humboldt County, CA. Our project supports restoration planning led by Friends of the Dunes by identifying site features, habitat composition, and disturbance patterns at the site. Using GPS surveys, aerial imagery, and ArcGIS Pro, we mapped infrastructure, cement footprints, debris piles, vegetation types, and habitat boundaries. We mapped infrastructure such as concrete foundations and debris, which contribute to ongoing ecological degradation and the presence of invasive species. In addition, our spatial analysis highlights variability in disturbance. From this …

Coastal dunes are important ecosystems that provide vital habitat for rare and endangered species as well as vital ecosystem services. However, since the late nineteenth century, coastal dune ecosystems have been invaded and altered by Ammophila arenaria, which is a beach grass species native to Europe. The dunes within the Humboldt Coastal Nature Center are one such example of this. This property is currently managed by the non-profit organization Friends of the Dunes, which has been working to restore the dunes' ecology and topography. Our project focuses on the monitoring and maintenance of a 2021 restoration project within a 17,794 …

Gamification: The Viability Of Using Genai To Create Games To Teach Legal Concepts, Nicole Belbin
Gamification: The Viability Of Using Genai To Create Games To Teach Legal Concepts, Nicole Belbin
Faculty Scholarship
This Essay examines whether generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) can lower the technical, time, and cost barriers that have limited the use of game-based learning (GBL) in legal education. It first considers the science of learning, focusing on spaced practice, retrieval practice, and concrete examples, and explains how GBL can incorporate these strategies. It then evaluates four general-purpose GenAI tools—Perplexity, Gemini, ChatGPT, and Claude—by testing their ability to state legal rules accurately and create games that teach personal jurisdiction.
The results demonstrate both GenAI’s promise and its limitations. Although all four tools incorporated core concepts of general jurisdiction, each omitted at …

Cold Comfort: Japan’S “Comfort Women” Litigation Under Transnational Law, Timothy Webster
Faculty Scholarship
Transnational human rights litigation has emerged as a powerful tool to remediate state and corporate abuses. Courts, however, rarely evince the same enthusiasm for these lawsuits as practitioners, scholars, and activists. For the past thirty-five years, “comfort women,” or survivors of wartime sexual exploitation, have used transnational litigation to seek redress from the Japanese government. Yet they have lost nearly all their cases. This Article uses ten “comfort women” lawsuits from Japan to test the limits of transnational human rights litigation. While judges rarely found for the comfort women, their verdicts nonetheless advanced the redress issue by showing the illegality …

Ecocide And The International Criminal Court: Reassessing The African Union-Icc Impasse, Ikechukwu Ugwu
Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law
The refusal of the African Union (AU) and its leaders to cooperate with the International Criminal Court (ICC) led to the negotiation of the Protocol on Amendments to the Protocol on the Statute of the African Court of Justice and Human Rights 2014 (the Malabo Protocol). The Protocol incorporates the core crimes of the Rome Statute and, in addition, expands on the meaning of international crime by defining crimes related to the environment, among others. Although the Malabo Protocol is innovative in its provisions, it lacks the potential to prevent ecocide in Africa or to serve as a model for …

Prescribed Fire Liability And Administration In Western States: An Empiricalanalysis And Call For Reform, Stephen R. Miller, Anastasia Telesetsky
Utah Law Review
Wildfires have grown exponentially over the last few years due to fuel loads, range- and timber-management policies, and climate change. The cost of fire suppression is also growing in both rural and urban areas. For instance, the 2016 Pioneer Fire in rural Idaho cost around $100 million to fight, while the 2025 urban conflagrations in Los Angeles, California destroyed over 16,000 structures despite an astonishing array of suppression resources deployed. Something new, and something big, in terms of law and policy interventions, is needed to stem the intensity of wildfires. Increasingly, governments, private citizens, and even corporate interests like insurance …
The Idea Of Air, Jonathan Skinner-Thompson
The Idea Of Air, Jonathan Skinner-Thompson
Utah Law Review
How we view air, especially clean air, has meaningful normative and practical implications. Today, it is commonly recognized as an exhaustible natural resource. But air was not always thought of as something to be conserved, developed, and used. This Article is the first to explore and interrogate that view. The shift to seeing air as a resource started in the first part of the twentieth century. Previously, air was characterized by its limitless supply of oxygen: a pure public good. Over time, the quality of that good changed, and a precious resource emerged. That resource—especially its chemical and physical characteristics—inspired …

The Dinosaur Age Is Over: The Case For Congressionally Reforming The Generalmining Law Of 1872, Andie Madsen
Utah Law Review
Bold legislative action is essential to modernize an outdated regulatory framework that no longer serves the public interest. By reforming the General Mining Law of 1872, the United States can advance towards a more sustainable and equitable future, leveraging its mineral resources to benefit all citizens and support the global transition to renewable energy. The urgency of this moment demands decisive action, as the implications for our environment and society are profound. Although Congress has not yet proven its capabilities in overcoming division and moving past legislative gridlock, it must rise to the occasion.

From Pañales To Partnership: An Ethnographic Investigation Of Knowledge, Gender, And Power Within A Family Literacy Program, Sara Mohler
West Chester University Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Final Projects
Within research on family literacy programming (Lynch & Prins, 2021), few studies bring together assets-based perspectives on knowledge and power alongside critical feminist lenses. This qualitative case study (Dyson & Genishi, 2005; Yin, 2018) informed by ethnography (Alonso Bejarano et al., 2019; Desmond, 2014; Günel & Watanabe, 2024) aimed to understand the culture of one family literacy program serving primarily Mexican-American families, named here the Treehouse Preschool, giving particular attention to the intersecting elements of knowledge, gender, and power as they are enacted across the roles and relationships of families and personnel participating in in the program. Data for this …

Over half of all spinal cord injuries (SCIs) in the United States occur at the cervical level and often cause both life-threatening breathing dysfunction and profound locomotor deficits. Although the C2 hemisection (C2Hx) model is vital for study of breathing dysfunction after experimental SCI, post-C2Hx locomotor deficits have only been assessed by metrics such as the Martínez Scale and ladder tests, which require time-intensive scoring by human observers. However, the CatWalk XT Gait Analysis system (Noldus Information Technology) delivers automated, quantitative assessment of interlimb coordination, gait cycle, and paw function, providing robust locomotor data in a time-efficient and practical manner. …

Introduction – The increasing reliance on interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary teams has reshaped how science is conducted, yet evaluating the success of such teams remains a persistent challenge. Traditional metrics, such as publication counts, impact factors, and citation indices, fail to capture the full scope of team contributions, particularly in contexts where success may be defined by community engagement, mentorship, or long-term collaboration. Methods – In this Perspective, we introduce Collaborative Guideposts, a framework designed to align success metrics with a team’s organizing priorities. We illustrate this approach through two contrasting team models from a biostatistical collaboration center: Team A, a …

The existing literature has explored the relationship between insecure attachment styles and parasocial relationships, particularly focusing on traditional media such as television. However, it has largely overlooked the novel form of media represented by contemporary Chinese otome games, which offer an idealized digital environment potentially more appealing to players with insecure attachment styles. Moreover, previous studies have not sufficiently differentiated between general parasocial interactions and the specific nuances of parasocial romantic relationships unique to romantic video games (RVGs). This study seeks to bridge these gaps by examining the psychological underpinnings of Chinese female players' engagement with female-oriented romantic video games. …

Skin Type Diversity In Image Datasets, Neda Alipour
Doctoral
Image-based AI systems that analyse human skin are increasingly used in healthcare and computer vision applications. However, many human skin-based image datasets do not provide reliable information about skin type, making it difficult to assess whether these systems perform consistently across the full spectrum of skin colour. The objective of this thesis is to examine how skin type diversity is represented and measured in image datasets, and to evaluate the reliability of image-based skin type measurement methods under different imaging conditions. Using publicly available skin lesion image datasets as a well-defined and widely used sub-class of skin image datasets, this …

The Lived Experience Of Intimate Partner Violence For Females In Emerging Adulthood: A Qualitative Study, Laurel Dobkin M.S.
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
Emerging adulthood is the developmental period between ages 18 to 25 where individuals begin to explore their worldviews and develop intimate relationships. This period is important for developing a sense of identity and self (Arnett, 2000, 2014). During this period, negative events or relationships, such as intimate partner violence (IPV), may have detrimental effects (Erikson, 1968; Barreto & Frazier, 2012). While literature suggests that IPV has high rates and negative consequences in emerging adulthood (Bhattacharjee & Gopal, 2022; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2024; Shen & Kusunoki, 2019), there is little research on the subjective experience of females …

Flood Risk Prediction System For Irish River Networks, Fernando Adalberto Naatz Heringer, Hugo Rodrigues De Freitas
ICT
Flooding costs the Irish economy more than 300 million euros annually; however, the hydrometric and meteorological data needed to predict dangerous river rises is already collected and freely available. This project applies machine learning to a decade of hourly observations from OPW Station 09001 on the River Liffey at Leixlip and Met Eireann Casement Aerodrome to build a flood risk prediction system with a 72-hour forecast horizon.
A two-phase modelling pipeline was built following the CRISP-DM framework. Phase 1 compared LSTM and GRU recurrent neural networks on the task of forecasting the river level in metres 72 hours ahead. LSTM …

Machine Learning System For Cereal Yield Prediction In South America., Victor Gabriel Oliveira, Kelvin Henrique Ferreira Dumas
ICT
This project developed a machine learning solution to predict cereal yield in South America using FAOSTAT agricultural data. The objective was to estimate yield in kg/ha for rice, maize, and wheat based on variables such as country, crop type, year, harvested area, producer price, pesticide use, and nutrient indicators.
The project followed the CRISP-DM methodology, covering business understanding, data understanding, data preparation, modelling, evaluation, and deployment. Several regression models were tested, including Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, AdaBoost, XGBoost, KNN, and SVR.
The models were evaluated using MAE, MSE, RMSE, and R² score. The results showed that tree-based ensemble models performed …
