Retirement: Broaching Intersectional Identities And Aging, Nichole Tiggs Angieri, Ericka Cables, Mary Martha Abernathy Jan 2026

Retirement: Broaching Intersectional Identities And Aging, Nichole Tiggs Angieri, Ericka Cables, Mary Martha Abernathy

Adultspan Journal

Broaching intersectional identities in retirement is a crucial counseling skill that fosters trust and connection with older adults as they navigate this major life transition. Using Person-Centered, Trauma-Informed (PCTI) and Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT) as complements to broaching, these theories provide both relational and cultural attunement to facilitate healing and well-being in this specialized population. Through didactic information and case studies, the purpose of this conceptual paper is to provide counselors and counselor educators with insight into broaching intersectional identities in retirement and to advocate for further research on aging and identity. The implications for clinical practice include providing an integrated …

Full-Time Career Retirement: A Black Man’S Narrative Of Survival And Protecting His Peace, Demetrius Cofield, Amaya Rakes

Adultspan Journal

Full-time career retirement is a major developmental transition that is often examined through race-neutral frameworks, leaving Black men’s experiences underexplored in counseling and aging scholarship. This perspective article centers the narrative of a retired Black man veteran who transitioned into full-time career retirement after decades of state employment. Using a narrative interview approach, this manuscript examines the factors that shaped his retirement decision and adjustment to later adulthood. The interview frames retirement as a process of self-preservation, continuity, and intentional living rather than identity loss or disengagement. Findings highlight the role of disciplined wellness practices and selective disengagement in promoting …

Lethality And The Historical Principles Of Arms Regulation, Darrell A. H. Miller, Jennifer Tucker, Peter Rutland, Stephen Hargarten Jan 2026

Lethality And The Historical Principles Of Arms Regulation, Darrell A. H. Miller, Jennifer Tucker, Peter Rutland, Stephen Hargarten

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Second Amendment “arms” jurisprudence is a muddle. Lower courts have been obliged to craft various approaches from Supreme Court decisions that appear to point in different directions.

We propose that the scope and protection of Second Amendment “arms” could be calibrated to a single, shared metric across all weapon types–lethality. Lethality captures the issue that everyone cares about: whether one advocates for gun rights or for gun violence prevention.

Lethality helps make legible the changes in weapons technology over time and explains the principle that underlies traditional regulation of “dangerous and unusual” weapons. The more lethal a weapon is, the …

Cheap Violence: Weapons And The Law, Joseph Blocher, Darrell A. H. Miller Jan 2026

Cheap Violence: Weapons And The Law, Joseph Blocher, Darrell A. H. Miller

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

A primary task of law is to control violence. Nearly every imaginable rule-of-law value depends on the success of that endeavor, and some of the most foundational works in legal and political theory begin with an effort to understand the relationship between law and violence. Many of those works were written during periods where the lines between law and violence were blurred, and current threats to the rule of law have sparked renewed interest in the structural interactions between law, violence, and the state.

Missing from this discussion has been a comparably deep analysis of the relationship between law and …

Patrimonial Constitutionalism, Aziz Z. Huq Jan 2026

Patrimonial Constitutionalism, Aziz Z. Huq

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

The means and the ends of federal power are experiencing a sea-charge. Pardons are freely granted—but only to political allies or political foes who might be coaxed into switching sides. Baseless federal criminal investigations are opened against other political foes. Probes into allies’ corruption are abandoned. Independent federal agencies responsible for defending the public sphere use their regulatory authority to openly advance politically allied voices, while stifling criticism of those in power. Federal money is explicitly wielded as cudgel and bribe to induce partisan loyalty. These and similar ways of flexing federal power add up to more than the sum …

Prescribing Religion: The Ten Commandments On Classroom Walls, Samuel L. Bray, Nathan S. Chapman, Brent A. Strawn Jan 2026

Prescribing Religion: The Ten Commandments On Classroom Walls, Samuel L. Bray, Nathan S. Chapman, Brent A. Strawn

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Several states have recently enacted laws requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in public schools. This Article considers the application of the Establishment Clause to these statutes. First, it examines the history of England and its North American colonies to show that a central feature of an established religion was the government’s prescription of particular religious beliefs and practices. Second, it demonstrates that choosing one version of the Ten Commandments to display in public school classrooms necessarily specifies particular religious beliefs. This is in contrast to expressions of generic providentialism that the founders understood the Establishment Clause to permit. …

The Prehistory Of The Interim Docket, Aditya Bamzai, Samuel L. Bray Jan 2026

The Prehistory Of The Interim Docket, Aditya Bamzai, Samuel L. Bray

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Did the Supreme Court issue stays of lower court judgments before the modern era? This Essay explores the underappreciated history of the Supreme Court’s issuance of interim relief. As we show, the Supreme Court has relied on a wide variety of statutory and common law authorities to issue stays long before the recent controversies attending the “shadow” or “interim” docket. This history demonstrates that the Court has always had authority to fashion interim relief of some kind. More- over, it supports the conclusion that the Supreme Court’s authority under the All Writs Act exists even when a more specific statutory …

Fee Simple Obsolete, Lee Anne Fennell Jan 2026

Fee Simple Obsolete, Lee Anne Fennell

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Urbanization has dramatically altered the way in which land generates and forfeits value. The dominant economic significance of patterns of land use and the opportunity costs of foregone complementarities have made the capacity to reconfigure urban property essential. Yet the architecture of our workhorse tenure form—the fee simple—is ill-suited to meet these challenges. The fee simple grants a perpetual monopoly on a piece of physical space—an ideal strategy when temporal spillovers loom large, interdependence among parcels is low, most value is produced within the four corners of the property, and cross-boundary externalities come in forms that governance strategies can readily …

Applied Environmental Research

Land utilization is an important indicator of socioeconomic and environmental changes caused by both natural and man-made factors. Land use and land cover (LULC) simulation is a critical tool for monitoring and predicting LULC and is essential for sustainable development, land resource management and planning. The cellular automata (CA) Markov model is the basis for the current study’s prediction of LULC changes in the Northeast Khong Sub Watershed (NKSW). Landsat data from 2013 to 2023 were used to investigate LULC classification and determine the spatiotemporal distributions of LULC. In addition, LULC data from 2013 and 2023 were used to generate …

Reduction Of Cr(Vi) With Infrared Light And Chemical Adsorption Of Cr(Iii) By A God-Crown/Bentonite Composite For Electroplating Waste Remediation, Andre Taufik Kurniawan, Muhammad Djoni Bustan, Sri Haryati

Applied Environmental Research

Heavy metal pollution, particularly chromium (Cr) from electroplating industrial waste, has severely threatened environmental quality and human health. This study aims to develop a composite adsorbent material based on bentonite and god crown biomass capable of removing chromium ions from liquid waste through a combination of reduction and adsorption mechanisms. The god crown/bentonite (GC/Bt) composite was synthesized at a mass ratio of 2:1 and calcined at 900°C. FTIR characterization revealed active functional groups (–OH, C=O, Si–O, and Al–O–Si), whereas BET analysis revealed a mesoporous structure (surface area 31.12 m2 g-1, pore diameter 4.37 nm) suitable for ion diffusion. The reduction …

Pension System And Corruption In Sub-Saharan Africa, Folake O. Alomilagba Jan 2026

Pension System And Corruption In Sub-Saharan Africa, Folake O. Alomilagba

Research Papers

This paper examines the relationship between corruption and pension coverage across Sub-Saharan Africa, where extending old-age income security remains a pressing developmental challenge. Using an unbalanced panel of 42 countries over 2000–2024, drawn from the Worldwide Governance Indicators, World Development Indicators, the International Labor Organization, and the World Bank's ASPIRE database, the study estimates the effect of the control of corruption on the share of the elderly receiving a pension. Pooled OLS, random effects, and two-way fixed effects estimators distinguish cross-country from within-country variation. Control of corruption is positively and significantly associated with coverage across cross-sectional specifications, with effects of …

Partial differential equations (PDEs) play a central role in scientific and engineering analysis, with applications spanning fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, and financial modeling, where they are used to describe diffusion processes, wave propagation, and the evolution of complex systems over space and time. Solving multidimensional partial differential equations (PDEs) is a computationally challenging problem, even for the most advanced classical systems. Over the past decade, quantum computing has attracted significant interest as a potential approach for solving complex computational problems, including multidimensional PDEs. Although a variety of approaches have been proposed for solving PDEs, most …

The Art Of The Steal: Remedying The Looting Of Cultural Property Under International Law, Madeleine L. Sharp Jan 2026

The Art Of The Steal: Remedying The Looting Of Cultural Property Under International Law, Madeleine L. Sharp

Minnesota Journal of International Law, Vols. 28:2 onward (2019-present)

The practice of looting has existed almost as long as art itself. Although international law has bolstered its protections for art and cultural property in the context of armed conflict, significant enforcement issues remain.

The current framework for prosecuting the crime of looting does not adequately deter the practice, especially in instances that are unrelated to periods of armed conflict. Although pillage is treated as a war crime, all cases of looting—not just those that occur during war— should be viewed as a serious crime that threatens all nations. This Article proposes that universal jurisdiction be extended to the act …

The Patriarchal Project Of Apartheid: Exploring The Gendered Dimensions Of Apartheid And International Justice Pathways Forward, Akila Radhakrishnan, Alyssa T. Yamamoto Jan 2026

The Patriarchal Project Of Apartheid: Exploring The Gendered Dimensions Of Apartheid And International Justice Pathways Forward, Akila Radhakrishnan, Alyssa T. Yamamoto

Minnesota Journal of International Law, Vols. 28:2 onward (2019-present)

Although the South African apartheid regime was first and foremost a race-based project, it was also a gendered project. The regime’s dystopian vision to entrench the systematic oppression of non-white people, particularly black people, was rooted in an ideological commitment not just to white supremacy, but to white male supremacy. This paper unpacks the gendered experiences of apartheid and outlines potential avenues to facilitate a more intersectional approach to justice and accountability efforts. Part I traces the patriarchal vision underpinning the South African apartheid regime—and the distinctly gendered dimensions of apartheid’s operationalization and legacy. Adopting a comparative approach, Part II …

Climate And Environmental Controls On Forest Soil Organic Matter Cycling, Genevieve Goebel Jan 2026

Climate And Environmental Controls On Forest Soil Organic Matter Cycling, Genevieve Goebel

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Climate change factors act on the soil environment in complex ways, known to disturb soil organic carbon (C). Rising global temperatures and alterations to regional precipitation and nitrogen deposition regimes may contribute to the intensification of global change by accelerating the rate of biological decomposition and CO2 efflux to the atmosphere. The magnitude and endurance of the disturbance to soil organic C across landscapes and throughout time that climate change factors may pose to soil C cycling are not comprehensively understood. These knowledge gaps in our field make it challenging to anticipate how soil environments and the vast ecosystems that …

Genomic Determinants Of Appetite Regulation And Their Role In Obesity Risk, Timothy J. Renier Jan 2026

Genomic Determinants Of Appetite Regulation And Their Role In Obesity Risk, Timothy J. Renier

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Over 40% of US adults and 20% of children live with obesity. It is related to increased risks of diseases including type II diabetes and cancer, is a source of harmful stigma, and impairs child development. Appetitive traits describing patterns of food approach and avoidance behaviors may serve as windows into the underlying pathophysiology of obesity. As both obesity and appetitive traits are heritable, common genetic drivers of obesity may lead to phenotypic obesity through appetitive traits as a disease mechanism. Additionally, GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have been shown to exert their profound clinical effects in part by modulating appetite. …

Cross-Temporal Statistical Approaches For Evaluating Predictor-Outcome Relationships, Jeff Joseph Jan 2026

Cross-Temporal Statistical Approaches For Evaluating Predictor-Outcome Relationships, Jeff Joseph

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Central auditory function is linked with cognitive deficits, but few research projects use existing statistical approaches or develop new ones to forecast cognitive deficits using the results of central auditory tests. To address this limitation, we use a series of statistical learning frameworks for predicting a child’s cognitive abilities based on his/her central auditory performances and demographic factors. Two key challenges exist. First, children may start the study at a time when they are unable to perform the central auditory tests or cognitive tests. Second, cognitive performance is age-dependent, particularly in the early formative years of childhood and adolescence. To …

Governing Agroecological Transitions: Landscape Legacies, Participation, And Socioecological Change In The Northeastern United States, Kristen Jovanelly Jan 2026

Governing Agroecological Transitions: Landscape Legacies, Participation, And Socioecological Change In The Northeastern United States, Kristen Jovanelly

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Agroecological transitions are often presented as purposeful shifts toward more resilient, equitable, and ecologically sustainable landscapes. In practice, these transitions unfold through histories, ecological feedback, institutional arrangements, and contested forms of participation. This dissertation examines how these forces shape what agroecological transitions become, for whom, and with what socioecological consequences across urban and working landscapes in the northeastern United States.

Drawing on historical and critical analysis, ecological modeling, greenhouse experimentation, ethnographic fieldwork, and institutional analysis, I trace transition through urban forests, community-garden seed banks and soils, temperate agroforestry systems, and a participatory tree nursery. Analyses of urban greening and agroforestry …

Beyond Bathrooms: The Far-Reaching Consequences Of Denying Gender Identity In Adams V. School Board Of St. Johns County, Jeffrey Sun, Regina Umpstead Pratel

American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law

INTRODUCTION: The transgender community continues to face discrimination in United States society, and legal protections are unlikely to change anytime soon. Understanding the broader context of these challenges helps explain why some instances of discrimination in public schools may be overlooked or even supported by public officials. An examination of recent judicial rulings concerning transgender students’ access to restrooms corresponding with their gender identity—situated within the broader convergence of national legal and social developments—provides critical insight into the structural barriers faced by transgender students within the educational system and transgender individuals in society at large. Significantly, the growing visibility of …

General Music Methods’ Effect On Sel Development: A Review Of Literature, Tessa M. Hansen Jan 2026

General Music Methods’ Effect On Sel Development: A Review Of Literature, Tessa M. Hansen

Graduate Research Papers

In an increasingly digital world, the demand for social-emotional learning (SEL) in the classroom has become a priority for holistic student development. While music education is often cited as a tool for emotional growth, there is a lack of synthesized research examining how specific, established music pedagogies facilitate these competencies. This literature review investigates the intersection of five foundational music methods–Orff-Schulwerk, Kodály, Suzuki, Dalcroze, and Gordon’s Music Learning Theory (MLT) – and their impact on the five core SEL competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.

Findings indicate that the Orff-Schulwerk and Kodály methods provide robust frameworks …

Effects Of Diversity Mixed Messages In Organizational Hiring Websites On Perceived Person-Organization Fit And Application Intention For Entry-Level Applicants, Clementina Edema, Edikan Nkanta, Alexis Noeela Quick, Linda Kabaaula, Alina Niftulaeva, Caleb T. Carr Jan 2026

Effects Of Diversity Mixed Messages In Organizational Hiring Websites On Perceived Person-Organization Fit And Application Intention For Entry-Level Applicants, Clementina Edema, Edikan Nkanta, Alexis Noeela Quick, Linda Kabaaula, Alina Niftulaeva, Caleb T. Carr

Iowa Journal of Communication

Organizations frequently incorporate explicit diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) statements and photographs of current employees into their online presence, in part to signal to potential job applicants their ability to ‘fit in’ to the organization, its culture, and its extant members. This two-factor (match between organizational DEI statement and racioethnic diversity of members depicted) experiment (N = 105) tested the effect of diversity mixed messages on applicant perceptions of person-organization fit, accounting for the moderating effects of individuals’ demographics (i.e., race/gender and political lean). Results revealed the consistency of DEI statements and the depictions of current organizational members did not …

Seeking Support After Miscarriage: A Reflexive Thematic Analysis Of Semi-Anonymous Communication On Reddit, Mahtab Talafian Jan 2026

Seeking Support After Miscarriage: A Reflexive Thematic Analysis Of Semi-Anonymous Communication On Reddit, Mahtab Talafian

Iowa Journal of Communication

Miscarriage is a deeply stigmatized and emotionally complex experience, often leaving individuals feeling isolated and unsupported. Increasingly, people turn to online communities for connection and assistance after miscarriage, and this has been the focus of research for a while. However, little is known about how they seek support in the presence of anonymity. This study examines the strategies people use to seek social support in the r/Miscarriage subreddit, addressing a gap in both health and communication scholarship. While previous research has shown that individuals use online platforms following miscarriage to seek information, share experiences, and seek emotional validation, this study …

The empirical research concerns how faith-based leaders manage the relationship between their faith values, their leadership …

Comparative Assessments Of Methane Flux Measurement Techniques In Serpentinite-Influenced Groundwater Wells, Madison J. Stetson Jan 2026

Comparative Assessments Of Methane Flux Measurement Techniques In Serpentinite-Influenced Groundwater Wells, Madison J. Stetson

Open Access Master's Theses

Methane (CH4) emissions from continental serpentinizing systems represent a significant component of Earth’s carbon cycling. Despite increasing recognition of serpentinite-hosted water-rock interactions as a source of trace gases, standardized field methodologies for quantifying trace gas flux from groundwater wells and similar subsurface conduits remain limited. This study addresses that gap by evaluating the reliability and replicability of three chamber-based sampling methods for measuring gas flux in serpentinite-hosted groundwater systems accessed by groundwater monitoring wells. Field measurements were conducted at the Coast Range Ophiolite Microbial Observatory (CROMO) within the McLaughlin Natural Reserve in Lower Lake, California, a site …
