Simulated Complex Cells Contribute To Object Recognition Through Representational Untangling, Mitchell B Slapik, Harel Z Shouval
Simulated Complex Cells Contribute To Object Recognition Through Representational Untangling, Mitchell B Slapik, Harel Z Shouval
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
The visual system performs a remarkable feat: it takes complex retinal activation patterns and decodes them for object recognition. This operation, termed "representational untangling," organizes neural representations by clustering similar objects together while separating different categories of objects. While representational untangling is usually associated with higher-order visual areas like the inferior temporal cortex, it remains unclear how the early visual system contributes to this process-whether through highly selective neurons or high-dimensional population codes. This article investigates how a computational model of early vision contributes to representational untangling. Using a computational visual hierarchy and two different data sets consisting of numerals …

Coming Disruptions In Corporate Law, Douglas Sarro, Edward J. Waitzer
All Papers
Corporate law’s dynamism precludes bold predictions about its future. Instead, we set out to highlight principles relevant to its trajectory and frame looming, unresolved issues. In that vein, artificial intelligence and other digital technologies raise considerable new opportunities for directors to enhance their oversight and for shareholders to be better informed and make more meaningful use of their governance rights. At the same time, the potential for wide-scale automation of corporate activities via these technologies amplifies corporate power and resulting risks of harm, adding new urgency to past prescriptions for rethinking the relationship between corporate and other areas of law …
Ionic Mechanisms Of Two-Pore Channel Regulation Of Vesicle Trafficking, Heng Zhang, Michael X Zhu
Ionic Mechanisms Of Two-Pore Channel Regulation Of Vesicle Trafficking, Heng Zhang, Michael X Zhu
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
The endolysosomal system plays a pivotal role in cellular function. Before reaching lysosomes for degradation, the endocytosed cargoes are sorted at various stages of endosomal trafficking for recycling and/or rerouting. The proper execution of these processes depends on tightly regulated ion fluxes across endolysosomal membranes. Recent studies have demonstrated the importance of two-pore channels (TPCs), including TPC1 and TPC2, in endolysosomal trafficking. These channels are expressed in the membranes of distinct populations of endosomes and lysosomes, where they respond to nicotinic acid adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NAADP) and phosphatidylinositol 3,5-bisphosphate [PI(3,5)P2] to conduct Ca2+ and Na+ release from these acidic organelles. …

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
In this paper, we study an integrable Camassa–Holm (CH) type equation with quadratic nonlinearity. The CH type equation is shown integrable through a Lax pair, and particularly the equation is found to possess a new kind of peaked soliton (peakon) solution – called rogue peakon, that is given in a rational form with some logarithmic function, but not a regular traveling wave. We also provide multi-rogue peakon solutions. Furthermore, we discuss the local well-posedness of the solution in the Besov space 𝐵𝑠𝑝,𝑟 with 1 ≤ p, r ≤ ∞, 𝑠 >max{1+1/𝑝,3/2} or 𝐵3/22,1 , and then prove the ill-posedness …

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Building a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient new energy system is a core strategy for China to achieve its “dual carbon” goals and promote high-quality development. This endeavor involves not only technological innovation in energy production and consumption but also requires guidance and support from the national governance system. As a key instrument of modern national governance, the fiscal and taxation policies serve as a crucial way to guide energy production and consumption, promote technological innovation, and adjust the distribution of interests. In light of the current multidimensional goals of energy transition—particularly the inherent tension between “clean and low-carbon” and …

Market-Oriented Reform In China’S Oil And Gas Industry: Current Dynamics And Strategic Pathways, Min Shi, Yuan Xue, Xunpeng Shi, Dayong Zhang
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
China’s oil and gas market-oriented reform, developed through decades of exploration, has established a structure featuring multi-entity exploration in the upstream, independent operation of the national pipeline network in the midstream, and diversified competition in the downstream. Nevertheless, systemic challenges persist. A highly concentrated supply structure poses risks to energy security, while inadequate competition and limited market openness constrain operational efficiency. The green transition is hampered by insufficient policy coordination and economic viability barriers, and R&D transformation bottlenecks impede technological innovation. Furthermore, regional disparities in public service provision undermine social equity. Resolving these contradictions necessitates a systematic approach to reconfigure …

Groundwater is a critical resource in Illah, Delta State, where surface water is unreliable. This study aims to evaluate groundwater potential and aquifer properties using geoelectric methods, with a particular focus on Dar-Zarrouk parameters. Thirteen Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) surveys were conducted using the Schlumberger array. Derived parameters, including resistivity, thickness, and Dar-Zarrouk indices, were analysed to characterise the aquifers’ hydraulic properties. Four to five geoelectric layers underlie the study area. Aquifer resistivity ranged from 124–2499 Ω·m, thickness from 3.4–57.9 m, and transmissivity from 27.54–468.99 m²/day. VES 4, VES 1, and VES 7 were identified as high-potential sites. Longitudinal conductance …

Hospitals are among the most energy-intensive building types because they operate around the clock and must maintain strict indoor environmental conditions, especially in hot-arid climates. Improving their performance calls for façade solutions that can store thermal energy effectively and help cut carbon emissions. This study evaluates the use of macro-encapsulated BioPCM® within the south façade of a high-rise hospital in Mansoura, Egypt, using dynamic simulations in DesignBuilder (EnergyPlus). The analysis focuses on two vertical levels, the third floor as a typical ward and the seventh floor as a rooftop ward, to investigate how elevation influences PCM performance, an aspect rarely …
