Reverse Micelles Produce Hydroxyapatite Nanoparticles As More Efficient Gene Delivery Carriers Than Regular Micelles, Vuk Uskoković Jan 2026

Reverse Micelles Produce Hydroxyapatite Nanoparticles As More Efficient Gene Delivery Carriers Than Regular Micelles, Vuk Uskoković

Administration and Staff Articles and Research

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is an effective inorganic gene delivery carrier due to its ability to transport genetic cargo across cell membranes, protect it from proteolysis, and enable escape from late endosomes via pH-controlled dissolution. However, its transfection efficiency remains lower than that of viral agents, prompting studies of hybrids with cationic molecules or phases to enhance the gene delivery performance. This study reports on the synthesis of HAp in regular and reverse micellar regions of a ternary microemulsion system composed of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), 1-hexanol and water. Spectroscopic characterization revealed that CTAB headgroups adopted more ordered supramolecular conformations in reverse micelles …

Identification Of A Previously Unrecognized Listric Fault Beneath The Acıpayam Graben: Insights From Integrated Dinsar And Field Observations, Semi̇h Eski̇ Jan 2026

Identification Of A Previously Unrecognized Listric Fault Beneath The Acıpayam Graben: Insights From Integrated Dinsar And Field Observations, Semi̇h Eski̇

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The 20 March 2019 Acıpayam earthquake (Mw 5.7) offers a valuable opportunity to examine the complex seismotectonic behavior of the Fethiye-Burdur Fault Zone (FBFZ), a transtensional structure in southwestern Türkiye. This study integrates field observations and focal mechanism data with differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) analysis to reassess the geometry of the causative fault. In contrast to previously proposed northeast-dipping blind fault models, the data obtained in this study indicate a southwest-dipping listric normal-fault system centered on the Yeniköy Fault, projecting beneath alluvial cover. Vertical displacement maps from Sentinel-1 show coseismic subsidence up to 5.8 cm and broader postseismic …

Unpacking Domestic Violence Intervention Programs, Lauren Pagan Jan 2026

Unpacking Domestic Violence Intervention Programs, Lauren Pagan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Domestic violence is a public health concern and most existing literature has focused on service delivery for victims, opposed to interventions for perpetrators. The Duluth model is the most common model guiding groups for perpetrators, yet results on its effectiveness have been inconsistent and unclear. Counselors and counselor educators lack the empirical support needed to effectively apply the Duluth model while working with the people who abuse. The purpose of this qualitative, existential–phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of participants in Duluth Model-based, domestic violence intervention programs (DVIPs). Guided by existential–phenomenological theory, this study addressed the research question: …

Geochemical Characteristics And Ree Potential Of Red Soils In The Seydişehir–Akseki Region (Türkiye), Muazzez Çeli̇k Karakaya, Necati̇ Karakaya, Aydin Rüşen, Cem Saraç

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The karst-type bauxite deposits located in southwestern Türkiye represent the most significant bauxite resources in the country. Surrounding these bauxite deposits are widespread red soil deposits of varying sizes, developed over lithologically diverse rocks. This study aims to investigate the origin of these red soils, which were examined in two distinct groups based on their spatial relationship to the underlying geology. The first group of red soils is found on or within the fractures of karstic limestones, while the second group is primarily located in proximity to ophiolitic rocks. The investigation focused on the physical properties, as well as the …

Abic-Based Surficial Density Model Of Türkiye And Tectonic Implications, İlki̇n Özsöz Jan 2026

Abic-Based Surficial Density Model Of Türkiye And Tectonic Implications, İlki̇n Özsöz

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

This study presents a surficial density model of Türkiye derived from the Akaike Bayesian Information Criterion (ABIC) inversion of terrestrial gravity data. By regularizing the gravity field through spatial smoothness constraints, the ABIC method yields optimal Bouguer reduction densities that reflect lateral variations in tectonic architecture, lithological heterogeneity, and upper crustal structure. Over 52,000 georeferenced observations reveal surficial densities ranging from 2.20 to 4.00 g/cm³, with a statistically robust mean of 2.669 ± 0.002 g/cm³ (95% confidence interval), suitable for precision gravity reduction and geodynamic applications. The derived density field delineates key tectonic domains across the Anatolian lithosphere, including extensional …

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The gut microbiota is crucial to health, yet implementation of microbiota-based therapeutics is limited by the lack of rapid diagnostics. We hypothesize that breath contains gut microbe-derived volatile organic compounds (VOCs) reflecting microbiota composition and metabolism. In healthy children, we found that breath VOC composition (or volatilome), assessed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, correlates with gut microbiome composition and function. By capturing exhaled breath from human-stool-colonized and monocolonized gnotobiotic mice, we profiled breath VOCs and discovered that murine breath is also significantly influenced by the gut microbiome. VOCs from cultured gut microbes were identified in vivo in monocolonized gnotobiotic colonized mice. …

Ureilite Meteorite Petrofabrics: Evolution And Formation Deformational Conditions, Benjamin Botwe Agyemang Jan 2026

Ureilite Meteorite Petrofabrics: Evolution And Formation Deformational Conditions, Benjamin Botwe Agyemang

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines the origin and development of crystallographic fabrics in ureilites, which are primitive achondritic meteorites interpreted as residues of partial melting from a differentiated parent body. In this study, we evaluate three fabric-forming mechanisms: gravitational cumulate crystallization, shock-induced deformation, and flow alignment associated with melt extraction and convective stirring. A quantitative Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) analysis was conducted on six ureilitic meteorites to assess olivine Lattice Preferred Orientation (LPO), Shape Preferred Orientation (SPO), the connection between SPO and LPO, and other deformation metrics, including Grain Orientation Spread (GOS), and Crystal Rotation Axis (CRA). Our results suggest that most …

Targeting Smpdl3b To Ameliorate Radiation- And Cisplatin-Induced Renal Toxicity, Youssef Zeidan Jan 2026

Targeting Smpdl3b To Ameliorate Radiation- And Cisplatin-Induced Renal Toxicity, Youssef Zeidan

All Publications

Kidney toxicity remains a major dose-limiting complication of radiation therapy and platinum-based chemotherapy, yet the molecular determinants of renal susceptibility and resilience to these genotoxic treatments are incompletely understood. Podocytes are particularly vulnerable to such insults, and emerging evidence implicates lipid dysregulation in podocyte injury. This study investigated the role of sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase acid-like 3B (SMPDL3B), a podocyte-enriched lipid-modulating enzyme, in radiation- and cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. Using a doxycycline-inducible, podocyte-specific SMPDL3B transgenic mouse model, renal injury was assessed following focal kidney irradiation, cisplatin administration, or their combination through functional assays, histopathology, ultrastructural analysis, immunofluorescence, and targeted lipidomics. Combined radiation and cisplatin …

Through the lens of Robin Williams principles of design as outlined in her book, The Non-Designer’s Design Book, this thesis analyzes selected covers of Archie Comics’ Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series to see how the covers evolved over time, as the nearly 25-year continuous run allows for a unique analysis opportunity. 18 issues were selected and analyzed, with conclusions drawn from the covers’ use of contrast, alignment, repetition, and proximity.

Paternal Filicide In The Context Of Divorce And Child Custody, Andrea Chase Jan 2026

Paternal Filicide In The Context Of Divorce And Child Custody, Andrea Chase

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This qualitative study examined the troubling intersection of parental separation, domestic violence and paternal filicide, issues that profoundly challenge societal and legal frameworks. Although domestic violence and marital dissolution are recognized risk factors for child maltreatment, their role in paternal filicide, specifically when motivated by parental separation, has been understudied. Using a purposeful and criterion-based sampling strategy, cases were drawn from the Center for Judicial Excellence database of children murdered during divorce, parental separation, and child custody disputes. After applying predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, the final sample consisted of 113 biological fathers responsible for the deaths of 263 children …

The Gene Encoding Ornithine Decarboxylase For Putrescine Biosynthesis Is Essential For The Viability Of Fusobacterium Nucleatum, Shiqi Xu, Bibek G C, Alex Phan, Chenggang Wu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Fusobacterium nucleatum is a Gram-negative anaerobe associated with periodontitis and colorectal cancer. It secretes putrescine, a polyamine that promotes biofilm formation by oral co-colonizers and enhances the proliferation of cancer cells. However, the physiological importance of putrescine for F. nucleatum itself remains unexplored. Here, we show that putrescine biosynthesis, mediated by the ornithine decarboxylase gene oda, is essential for F. nucleatum viability. Deletion of oda was only possible when a functional copy was provided in trans, and CRISPR interference of oda expression resulted in complete growth defects. The essentiality of oda was conserved across multiple subspecies. Supplementation with …

Long-Term Changes In Relative Humidity And Soil Wetness: Implications On Agriculture And Environmental Sustainability In Western Himalaya, Ashwani Ashwani, Pankaj Kumar

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Long-term climate changes in humidity and soil wetness in the cold deserts of the Western Himalaya are still not well researched. Understanding the long-term trends of relative humidity (RH) and soil moisture is crucial in high-altitude, cold desert regions for effective agricultural management and environmental sustainability. The study was conducted in a part of the western Himalaya, which is an ecologically fragile zone with a highly sensitive agricultural region that is vulnerable to climatic variations. A comprehensive study was conducted to evaluate the spatiotemporal variability of RH and soil wetness by means four techniques: Mann-Kendall, Modified Mann-Kendall, Sen’s slope estimator, …
