Differences have been used throughout history to separate that which is deemed superior from that which is inferior. Disabilities, both physical and mental, are what history has often deemed a mark of the inferior. With little rationale to explain the occurrence of many disabilities, man turned to divine punishment and quasi-scientific movements to fill the gaps and explain the existence of what was assumed to be a lesser, plighted people. If a person exposes his or her genitals to a minor in private or in public, that person would be guilty of indecent exposure. But if a person exposes his or her genitals to a minor over video chat, no harm, no foul. Similarly, if a person exposes his or her genitals to a minor via text message, there are no repercussions. Why is it that the same act—when done through a screen—functions like a loophole to a crime? The reason for this “loophole” is because of a misunderstanding of the crime of indecent exposure. In our keynote address at the 2025 National Numeracy Network Annual Meeting, we introduced the framework we developed for considering four domains of an institution’s quantitative skills/reasoning support ecosystem that includes bridge programs with a quantitative component, approaches to assessing readiness, curricular on-ramps, and supplementary support. We believe this ecosystem framework has the potential to help campus leaders coordinate institutional efforts around student success in areas connected to students’ quantitative preparation. This keynote highlighted the idea that coordination of stakeholders and their engagement with domains of the ecosystem fall along a spectrum. We provide approaches for using this framework to …

Lived Experiences Of Delirium In Critically Ill Children: A Qualitative Study, Jasmin Moradi, Mirriam Mikhail, Laurie A. Lee, Chani Traube, Aimee J. Sarti, Karen Choong

Objective: To understand the lived experiences of delirium in critically ill children Materials & Methods: We conducted phenomenological qualitative interviews with critically ill pediatric survivors aged 0-18 years who had experienced delirium, along with their family caregivers and healthcare providers, from pediatric intensive care units in two tertiary care children’s hospitals in Canada. Cases were identified if they had a Cornell Assessment of Pediatric Delirium (CAPD) score of ≥ 9 for at least 48 hours. Results: Thirteen interviews were conducted, representing 10 index patients with delirium (age range: 7 weeks to 17 years). Participants shared experiences that were divided into …

Journal of Pediatric Intensive Care
Objectives: Data regarding a terminal withdrawal of mechanical ventilation in pediatric patients, in particular the time-to-death, would be helpful to family and hospital staff. Methods: This retrospective case series will review the terminal withdrawal of mechanical ventilation in PICU patients at our hospital between 2015 and 2020. Results: There were 222 PICU deaths and 53 of these patients died following a terminal withdrawal of mechanical ventilation. The time-to-death was <1 hour in 37 patients, from 1 to 24 hours in 12 patients, and >24 hours in 4 patients. Neither age nor the duration of mechanical ventilation prior to terminal withdrawal of mechanical ventilation was associated with time-to-death. Introduction: MIS-C is a hyperinflammatory process leading to multiorgan failure and shock, occurring during the acute or post-infectious stage of SARS-CoV-2, and has 2 subtypes: para-infectious and post-infectious varieties. The new onset of refractory status epilepticus has rarely been described as the presenting feature of MIS-C. Methods: This retrospective study, conducted at Dr. B. C. Roy Post Graduate Institute of Pediatric Sciences, included children hospitalised between August 1, 2020 and July 31, 2021, with NORSE and subsequently diagnosed to have MIS-C.
