Visitors see historical objects and archival documents exploring such topics as the history of mental wellness treatment, immigration intelligence testing, study of behavior, gender identity, authority, sensory perceptions, animal studies, sensations, and violence. Before leaving the museum, visitors are invited to reflect on what they learned by responding to the following prompt by writing on a note card and leaving it …

The Robot As A Document For Action: Materiality And Corporeality In The Info-Communicational Approach To Robots, Cécile Payeur, Béa Arruabarrena Feb 2026

The Robot As A Document For Action: Materiality And Corporeality In The Info-Communicational Approach To Robots, Cécile Payeur, Béa Arruabarrena

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This article explores the emerging materialities of mediating artifacts in the field of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). Drawing on the evolution of documentary environments and the growing hybridization of digital and physical spaces, it extends documentary and communication theories to robots taking into account their socio-technical dimension and their info-communicational implications for human interactions. It posits that examining the robot as a mediating artefact of a documentary nature can enhance both the understanding and the design of collaborative logic in HRI. Using Manuel Zacklad's theoretical framework, Documents for Action (DoPA), the research conceptualizes the robot as a semiotic and mediating document …

Toward Transparent Bureaucracy: Nlp-Based Document Classification And Power Dynamics In The Srikandi System, Zulfatun Sofiyani, Suprayitno Suprayitno, Faisal Fahmi, Mega Putri Mahadewi Feb 2026

Toward Transparent Bureaucracy: Nlp-Based Document Classification And Power Dynamics In The Srikandi System, Zulfatun Sofiyani, Suprayitno Suprayitno, Faisal Fahmi, Mega Putri Mahadewi

Proceedings from the Document Academy

As the Indonesian government advances digital document management through the SRIKANDI system, challenges persist regarding fragmented and subjective classification practices. This study proposes the integration of Natural Language Processing (NLP)-based classification within SRIKANDI to enhance consistency, transparency, and accountability in document management. Framed by an interdisciplinary theoretical foundation, the study synthesizes Michael Buckland’s document theory, viewing documents as dynamic social evidence, with Michel Foucault’s theory of power, highlighting classification as an exercise of institutional authority, and NLP methodologies that enable automated, content-driven categorization. The study positions documents as both technological artifacts and political constructs, whose classification practices simultaneously structure meaning …

Mediating Cultural Messages Through Technology: A Case Study Of The Paras Nusantara Program In The National Museum Of Indonesia, Ciwuk Musiana Yudhawasthi, Rowella Reyes Parrucho, Truly Wangsalegawa

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Museums increasingly adopt interactive technologies such as gamification to communicate complex historical and cultural messages in ways that are accessible to the public. In response to the growing need for more engaging and inclusive cultural education, the National Museum of Indonesia has introduced Paras Nusantara, an innovative program that merges artificial intelligence (AI) with historical portraiture to foster public awareness of Indonesia’s rich ethnic diversity. "Paras Nusantara," which translates to "Faces of the Archipelago," utilizes AI-driven facial recognition to match visitors’ facial features with one of 78 ethnographic portraits created by artist Raden Mas Pirngadie in 1935. By transforming …

Ai-Generated Content And Cultural Preservation: Toward A Research Agenda, Ryo Shiozaki Feb 2026

Ai-Generated Content And Cultural Preservation: Toward A Research Agenda, Ryo Shiozaki

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper maps the theoretical and practical challenges of preserving AI-generated content (AIGC) and proposes a coordinated research agenda rather than policy prescriptions. AIGC reveals the networked, processual nature of cultural production, challenging assumptions about human authorship, singular intentionality, and linear transmission. We identify forces that dissolve boundaries—indistinguishability, distributed intentionality, and recursive training loops—examine legal patchworks across jurisdictions, and consider evolving social perceptions that shape cultural recognition. Extending document theory toward evaluation that gives priority to function and drawing on social ontology, we argue that preservation and recognition are mutually constitutive. We outline a coordinated agenda across three fronts: theoretical …

A Documentalist Critique Of Information Science, Michael K. Buckland Feb 2026

A Documentalist Critique Of Information Science, Michael K. Buckland

Proceedings from the Document Academy

The paper examines the claim that new developments in document theory, sometimes referred to as “neodocumentalism,” constitute a radical challenge to orthodox information science theory. Related terminology is clarified and the disparate language needs of information practice and information theory are identified. The use of metaphor and figurative language is beneficial for practice, but detrimental for theory development. Finally, two linear models of documentary activity (reading and writing; reception and expression) are shown to form a single unified model.

Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases

Objective: Crimean–Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) and brucellosis are two zoonoses that co-circulate in overlapping endemic areas and share similar clinical features. They may occur concurrently in the same patient. Methods: We aimed to investigate the occurrence of concurrent CCHF and brucellosis in pediatric patients from our endemic region. Results: We reviewed 31 patients younger than 18 years who, between January 2018 and December 2024, underwent concurrent testing with CCHF PCR and the Brucella serum agglutination test (SAT), along with their presenting complaints. Rural residence was present in 45.2% of cases, and a history of tick bite prior to presentation in …

Expression Of Metrnl, Presepsin, And Bmp9 In Peripheral Blood Of Children With Sepsis And Their Roles In Diagnosis And Prognosis, Yang Liu, Cheng Wei

Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases

Objective: Meteorin-like protein (METRNL), soluble CD14 subtype (presepsin), and bone morphogenetic protein 9 (BMP9) show promising for sepsis diagnosis and prognosis assessment in children. Their diagnostic and prognostic utility is comprehensively assessed in this study. Methods: A total of 360 children, aged 3-14 years, with sepsis, infection, and healthy groups were retrospectively analyzed. Receiver Operating Characteristic curve evaluated the diagnostic performance of METRNL, presepsin, and BMP9 for sepsis. The 28-day prognostic information was collected for the sepsis group. Risk factors for poor prognosis in the sepsis group were analyzed using logistic regression. A nomogram prediction model for prognostic prediction in …

Unplanned Extubations In Pediatric Critical Care: A Case-Control Study, Krista Wollny, Cameron B. Williams, Raghad Al-Abdwani, Carol Cartelle, Jason Macartney, Helena Frndova, Norbert Chin, Christopher Parshuram Feb 2026

Unplanned Extubations In Pediatric Critical Care: A Case-Control Study, Krista Wollny, Cameron B. Williams, Raghad Al-Abdwani, Carol Cartelle, Jason Macartney, Helena Frndova, Norbert Chin, Christopher Parshuram

Journal of Pediatric Intensive Care

Objectives: To quantify associations between the risk of unplanned extubation and patient-, environment-, and care-related factors in pediatric critical care; and to compare outcomes between children who did and did not experience an unplanned extubation. Methods: Retrospective case-control analysis including patients <18 years who experienced an unplanned extubation during ICU admission (2004-2014). Cases were matched by age, duration of mechanical ventilation, and date to control-patients (4:1) who were intubated but did not experience an unplanned extubation. Conditional logistic regression was used to evaluate associations between unplanned extubations and the abstracted characteristics. Results: We identified 1601 eligible controls matched to 458 case-patients. When adjusted for confounders, eight variables were associated with unplanned extubation: three patient-related factors (previous ICU admission, previous intubation, and the volume of secretions); one environment-related factor (patient room set-up); and four care-related factors (intubation route, and the use of sedation, muscle relaxation and restraints). Patients who had an unplanned extubation had longer length of stay, but lower rate of mortality. Conclusions: This is the largest case-control study identifying variables associated with unplanned extubation in pediatric critical care. Several are potentially modifiable and may provide opportunities to improve quality of care in controlled ICU environments.

Variability In Clinician Awareness Of Intravenous Fluid Administration In Critical Illness: A Prospective Cohort Study, Stephen M. Gorga, Alexander L. Sliwicki, Julie Sturza, Erin F. Carlton, Ryan P. Barbaro, Rajit K. Basu Feb 2026

Variability In Clinician Awareness Of Intravenous Fluid Administration In Critical Illness: A Prospective Cohort Study, Stephen M. Gorga, Alexander L. Sliwicki, Julie Sturza, Erin F. Carlton, Ryan P. Barbaro, Rajit K. Basu

Journal of Pediatric Intensive Care

Objective: Intravenous (IV) fluids are commonly administered to critically ill children, but clinicians lack effective guidance for the correct dose and duration of therapy resulting in variation of prescribing habits which harm children. It is unknown if clinicians recognize the amount of IV fluid that patients receive. We aimed to determine clinician accuracy in the identification of the volume of IV fluids patients will receive over the next 24 hours. Methods: Prospective cohort study enrolled all patients admitted to the PICU from May-August 2021 at the University of Michigan’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). For each …

Authorization Gateway For Legacy System Integration — Credential-Isolated Proxy With Record Translation, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Authorization Gateway For Legacy System Integration — Credential-Isolated Proxy With Record Translation, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems for governed execution proxies that bridge the gap between decision-governed authorization and target systems that cannot implement authorization verification. In one embodiment, a governed execution proxy receives an execution authorization derived from a sealed decision record, performs an authorization verification protocol comprising credential signature validation, condition verification, and invalidation status checking, and upon successful verification translates the authorization into a structured task record in a target system rather than directly executing the authorized action. The proxy enforces a credential isolation boundary where raw authorization credentials are retained within a trusted domain and only derived …

Tamper-Evident Status Derivation From Cryptographic Execution Proof — Eliminating Mutable Status Fields, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Tamper-Evident Status Derivation From Cryptographic Execution Proof — Eliminating Mutable Status Fields, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems for determining the derived committed status of sealed decision records by computing that status from the existence and verification of execution proofs rather than reading a stored mutable status value. In one embodiment, a sealed decision record is stored in a tamper- evident immutable record store without any mutable value indicating whether execution has occurred, and committed status is derived at the time of a status query by checking whether a valid execution proof exists in a separate proof store and passes multi-condition verification. The elimination of mutable status values structurally prevents status manipulation …

Privilege Separation Architecture — Structural Confinement Of Analysis Components In Decision Systems, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Privilege Separation Architecture — Structural Confinement Of Analysis Components In Decision Systems, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems for structurally separating components that analyse and propose from components that produce external effects within computational decision infrastructure. In one embodiment, a computational system enforces a structural separation between a determination-side partition (the analysis partition) and an effect-side partition (the execution partition) through its construction — such that no component in the analysis partition can directly invoke operations that produce external effects, regardless of that component’s credentials, permissions, or compromise status. The structural isolation is enforced by system architecture rather than by runtime policy or administrative configuration. In one embodiment, the separation applies with …

Snapshot Isolation For Policy Evaluation — Temporal Consistency Across Multi-Step Processes, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Snapshot Isolation For Policy Evaluation — Temporal Consistency Across Multi-Step Processes, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems for ensuring temporal consistency across multi-step decision processes that evaluate organisational decisions against rules and policies drawn from multiple independent sources. In one embodiment, a temporal reference is captured at the initiation of a decision process and carried through all subsequent evaluation steps, ensuring that every step observes the policy environment as it existed at a consistent policy snapshot. Temporal markers obtained from policy sources are treated as opaque — their internal structure is not interpreted by the decision system — and freshness comparison determines whether one marker represents a state at least as …

Context-Parameterised Policy Evaluation — Dimensional Context For Multi-Tenant Rule Resolution, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Context-Parameterised Policy Evaluation — Dimensional Context For Multi-Tenant Rule Resolution, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems for scope parameterisation of decision operations using structured context. In one embodiment, a context coordinate comprising organisational context parameters and a point-in-time state reference parameterises all decision operations — including rule resolution, reuse eligibility determination, execution permission issuance, and validity verification — such that each operation is evaluated relative to dimensional context rather than against a single global configuration. Context parameters are subject to a parameter stability classification that distinguishes stable context parameters from instance- specific context parameters, enabling different operations to consume different operation-specific context subsets according to each operation’s purpose. In one …

Multi-Dimensional Record Addressing For Decision Management — Contextual Position As Structural Identity, Jayson Winchester Feb 2026

Multi-Dimensional Record Addressing For Decision Management — Contextual Position As Structural Identity, Jayson Winchester

Defensive Publications Series

This publication discloses methods and systems for addressing decision records by scope coordinates comprising discrete comparable elements that identify a contextual position within an organisational domain. In one embodiment, the scope coordinates are a structural component of the record identity rather than descriptive metadata, such that decision records at different contextual positions are structurally distinct entities even when the decision content is identical. Computable structural relationships between scope positions — including but not limited to containment, partial overlap, generalisation, adjacency, and equivalence — determine decision applicability: whether a previously sealed decision record at one contextual position can satisfy a request …

Synchronized Display Of Composite Musical Information For Collaborative Performance, Paula Marques Feb 2026

Synchronized Display Of Composite Musical Information For Collaborative Performance, Paula Marques

Defensive Publications Series

Digital music aids for individual performers can lead to desynchronization and fragmented views when used in a group setting, as each musician may see their part in isolation. This disclosure describes systems and methods for a synchronized, multi-user musical performance environment. A shared session state, including an authoritative playback position, can be maintained across multiple participant computing devices, for example, smartphones, tablets, wearable devices, or augmented reality glasses. A composite user interface on each device can concurrently display various forms of musical information, such as lyrics and instrument-specific notation, in a scrolling format against a fixed temporal marker. This can …
