Paternal Alienation, Paternal Strain, Generativity, Adjustment, And Resilience (P-Apgar): A Conceptual Framework For Fathers’ Perinatal Psychosocial Adjustment, Rachael Elizabeth Schmitz
Paternal Alienation, Paternal Strain, Generativity, Adjustment, And Resilience (P-Apgar): A Conceptual Framework For Fathers’ Perinatal Psychosocial Adjustment, Rachael Elizabeth Schmitz
Nursing and Health Sciences
Paternal perinatal depression is underrecognized, and existing tools often fail to capture male-specific symptomatic expressions. Fathers experience significant psychosocial changes during the transitional period, yet clinical assessment of paternal mental health remains largely absent from routine clinical practice. This paper introduces a multi-dimensional tool called the P-APGAR. The theory-informed conceptual tool is meant to guide the assessment of fathers’ perinatal adjustment, operationalizing core elements of role-based, relational, and emotional adaptation. The model adapts the logic of the traditional newborn APGAR score to a father-centered context based on Paternal Identity, Alienation, Paternal Strain, Generativity, Adjustment, and Resilience. A theoretical synthesis approach …

On Edible Food Recovery: Integration Of Local Agriculture Into Santa Clara County Food Recovery Networks, Anna Keenan, Caitlin Delamora, Jenna Martinez, Vansh Malik
Environmental Studies and Sciences Senior Capstone
Santa Clara County (SCC) produces over 50 million pounds of surplus food, yet 31% percent of county residents are reported to be at risk of food insecurity, lacking reliable access to proper, affordable nutrition. Additionally, SCC produces approximately 40,000 tons of food waste annually. Food waste decomposes in landfills, producing greenhouse gas emissions, posing a pressing public health and environmental issue. California’s food waste law (SB 1383) addresses this challenge. We aimed to provide actionable insights that enable local farmers to donate more surplus produce, identifying ways to divert food loss from local farms to recovered food hubs, turning potential …
Health Disparities Resulted From The Relationships Between Vulnerable Patients And Providers, Matthew Maurice Bradley
Health Disparities Resulted From The Relationships Between Vulnerable Patients And Providers, Matthew Maurice Bradley
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The study's purpose was to understand patterns of mistrust between providers and patients in vulnerable and underserved populations. The theories guiding this study were the critical theory and the critical race theory created by Max Horkheimer as it explains how people can collaborate and actively participate in rebuilding trust. The intention is to rebuild trust and reduce health disparities in the United States. The general problem is the lack of provisional resources for underserved and vulnerable communities, resulting in the population lacking trust in healthcare administration. Speicher and Francis (2022) examined how increasing physician turnover, burnout, depression, and dissatisfaction affect …
The Psychometric Use Of Word Embeddings, Thomas Benjamin Lyle Wasden
The Psychometric Use Of Word Embeddings, Thomas Benjamin Lyle Wasden
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This quantitative study examined the feasibility of categorizing individuals by English-language competency using word embeddings derived from language samples obtained from these individuals and by viewing word embeddings as a psycholinguistic construct. Word embeddings have been shown to be a versatile tool for performing a large number of important natural language processing (NLP) tasks, as well as a plausible model for some processes in the human mind, including processes within the domain of psycholinguistics. This research seeks to build upon previous research by showing that word embeddings may shed light on the underlying neural representation of semantic entities being acquired …

A Multi-State Look Into Early Intervention Speech-Language Pathologists’ Confidence Identifying And Diagnosing Autism, Allison Gladfelter, Adelaide Parr, Anna Cannone, Sarah O'Connor
CISLL Publications
Purpose: Although autism can be reliably diagnosed by 18 months of age, long wait times and limited access to qualified providers prevent families from obtaining timely diagnostic services. Trained speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are qualified to diagnose autism, ideally as part of a multidisciplinary team. SLPs working on early intervention (EI) teams are well-situated to help close this diagnostic wait time gap. The purpose of this survey study was to explore EI SLPs’ experiences serving autistic children, confidence in identifying and diagnosing autism, and their perceptions of barriers or facilitators to diagnostic confidence and wait times.
Method: 287 EI SLPs from …
Press Protection As Anticorruption, Zachary Reger
Press Protection As Anticorruption, Zachary Reger
Texas A&M Law Review
As the partisan press of the Founding Era gave way to the commercial press of the nineteenth century, then to the professional press of the twentieth century, American journalism assumed an increasingly skeptical attitude toward governmental power. Today, the investigatory and information-spreading functions of the “fourth branch” are more important than ever to checking public corruption in a vast administrative state. At the same time, the press faces financial crisis, threatening the anticorruption interest.
This Essay evaluates three mechanisms for shoring up the corruption-fighting role of American journalism: (1) constitutional speech protections for the corporate form taken by most modern …
Examining The Effect Of Enhanced Retrieval Practice With Or Without Artificial Intelligence On Task Value And Self-Efficacy Of College Students: A Quasi-Experimental Study, Duane N. Stutzman
Examining The Effect Of Enhanced Retrieval Practice With Or Without Artificial Intelligence On Task Value And Self-Efficacy Of College Students: A Quasi-Experimental Study, Duane N. Stutzman
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative quasi-experimental study was to determine if a significant difference exists in college students perceived task value and self-efficacy when using different forms of retrieval practice enhanced with or without artificial intelligence. This study is important because task value and self-efficacy may have an impact on student motivation and engagement; therefore, the study adds to the literature demonstrating that retrieval practice can help improve active, rather than passive learning. The sample was composed of 140 undergraduate students enrolled in a hybrid health science course at a large university in the Midwest. After participants completed their assigned …
A Phenomenology Of Athletic Leaders In Managing Team Chemistry Among Intercollegiate Women’S Soccer Programs Through The Coach-Player Relationship, Kevin M. Long
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the experiences and practices collegiate women’s soccer coaches employ in building and managing team chemistry through the coach-player relationship. The theory guiding this study was Dansereau’s leader-member exchange theory, as it emphasizes a leader’s linear relationship with each team member and that the relationship can influence team chemistry. The central research question addressed the lived experiences of athletic leaders in building team chemistry among intercollegiate women’s soccer programs. This qualitative research was a hermeneutic phenomenological study on women’s soccer teams throughout the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Data collection was in the …

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Women Caregivers Of The Sandwich Generation, Keri L. Burns
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study is to describe female members of the sandwich generation’s experiences as care providers during and post-COVID-19 in Central Florida. At this research stage, female members of the sandwich generation are understood as women in midlife who occupy dual caregiving roles for dependent children and aging parents, and whose lived experiences offer insight into caregiving experiences during a global pandemic. (Steiner & Fletcher, 2017). As life expectancy has increased and financial insecurity has been a concern for all generations, the sandwich generation caregivers, specifically women, have become more focused on providing varying levels of care …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
It is increasingly acknowledged that high income countries do not enjoy universal drinking water coverage, with pockets of water insecurity persisting close to areas that have had high-quality, centralized water provision for half a century or more. The reasons behind this are complex, and effective ways to improve water security in these areas defy simple prescriptions. Nuanced measures that disaggregate the different facets of water insecurity are especially important as we attempt to understand and, crucially, improve water security in high-income countries. In this paper, we describe a qualitative protocol for assessing water insecurity at the household level in a study …

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are key reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), with municipal sludge containing high bacterial densities and diverse ARGs that may spread through land application. Hydrothermal treatment (HT) is a process that inactivates pathogens and stabilizes biomass, but its performance at moderate temperatures is less understood. We evaluated HT (100°C–250°C; 2–24 h) for degrading bacterial DNA and ARGs in dewatered municipal sludge. DNA was quantified by fluorometry, bacterial presence confirmed by 16S rRNA gene PCR, and ARGs profiled by qPCR targeting 84 clinically and environmentally relevant genes. HT up to 250°C produced modest carbon densification, high solids …

Precise estimation of evapotranspiration (ET) is essential for sustainable water management in arid agroecosystems, particularly for high-water-demand crops such as rice. This study integrated very-high-resolution UAV thermal–multispectral imagery with a Two-Source Energy Balance model (UAV–TSEB) and a field-calibrated AquaCrop model to quantify daily ET and its components under continuous flooding on the arid Peruvian coast during the 2024–2025 season. A network of 24 drainage lysimeters provided an independent observational benchmark (ETlys); to represent the treatment-level response, lysimeter observations were aggregated as the mean across the 24 units for each UAV campaign. Thirteen UAV surveys supplied radiometric surface temperature …

Tart cherry is an important fruit crop in Utah, where irrigation is essential due to arid conditions. Precision irrigation requires reliable indicators of plant water status, and stem water potential (Ψstem), is among the most sensitive though labor-intensive and spatially limited. This study develops Ψstem estimation models using high-resolution multispectral Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) imagery combined with meteorological and soil moisture data, applying Symbolic Regression (SR). Results show a stronger correlation between optical bands and Ψstem during the pre-harvest period. Among 85 vegetation indices, the Red Chromatic Coordinate (RCC) index performed best (R2 = 0.67). …

Lived Experiences Of Texas Construction Workers Reporting Near Misses On Their Jobsite, Joaquin Manuel Diaz
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Near miss incidents in the construction industry, when reported, serve as critical indicators of safety performance. When reported, organizations can identify hazards early and reduce the incidence of injuries and illnesses. Limited research exists on how construction workers perceive near miss incidents and how they are influenced to report them. Semi-structured audio-recorded interviews with 15 Texas-based construction workers in three cities about their lived experiences with near-miss reporting were conducted between July 18 and August 22, 2025. Data were organized using NVivo software and analyzed according to the phenomenological procedures outlined by Burns et al. and the qualitative analysis guidance …
Circularity And Carbon Performance Of Prefabricated Biobased Modular Systems: A Comparative Analysis Of Cases And Life Cycle Assessment Methods, Patrick Daly
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
The construction sector faces escalating pressure to reduce embodied greenhouse gas emissions while transitioning from linear material use toward circular, regenerative systems. Biobased modular wall assemblies designed for disassembly and reuse are increasingly promoted as a pathway to address both challenges; however, robust empirical comparisons with conventional construction remain limited, particularly when assessed across different life cycle assessment (LCA) methods and circularity assumptions. This paper presents a comparative, multi tool, and multi cycle LCA of prefabricated biobased modular wall systems developed within two EU research and demonstration projects (Drive 0 and Circ Reno), benchmarked against conventional external wall insulation systems …

Underexplored Maternal Microbiomes: Immune, Metabolic, And Microbial Pathways Shaping Pregnancy Outcomes, Indira U Mysorekar
Underexplored Maternal Microbiomes: Immune, Metabolic, And Microbial Pathways Shaping Pregnancy Outcomes, Indira U Mysorekar
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Maternal microbial ecosystems play critical roles in shaping reproductive physiology and pregnancy outcomes. During the pre-conception and prenatal periods, these communities modulate maternal physiology by regulating immune tolerance, nutrient metabolism, and susceptibility to pregnancy complications such as preterm birth, hypertensive disorders, and gestational diabetes. While the gut microbiota has been extensively studied, the roles of cervicovaginal, urinary, respiratory, oral, and upper reproductive tract microbiomes remain less clear. In this minireview, we synthesize current knowledge on these underexplored maternal microbiomes, with an emphasis on the cervicovaginal and urinary microbiota and their interactions with the placenta and fetus. We discuss cross-niche microbial …

Older adults comprise the fastest growing demographic in correctional facilities in the United States. Studies have shown older adults in prison report difficulty accessing healthcare and navigating the prison environment. Little is known about how older adults navigate aging and access healthcare in the jail setting. We sought to explore experiences of older adults incarcerated in a county jail. We conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with 20 older adults (> 50 years old) who were incarcerated at a local county jail and were referred to the emergency department for acute care needs. Interviews focused on experiences of aging while incarcerated and …
A Collostructional Approach To The Concealed Passive Construction In English, Rok Sim, Jungsoo Kim
A Collostructional Approach To The Concealed Passive Construction In English, Rok Sim, Jungsoo Kim
Faculty Publications
This study investigates the English concealed passive construction (CPC), as in the car needs washing, using authentic corpus data. While previous research has explored certain aspects of the CPC, little attention has been given to strongly associated matrix verbs (or verb types) and interactions between matrix verbs (or verb types) and other elements of the construction. To address these issues, we apply three types of collostructional analysis, and our findings indicate that no single, straightforward pattern emerges with respect to real-life grammatical properties of the CPC. We then show that the well-known distinction between raising and control constructions, formalized …

With the rapid progress of large language models (LLMs), advanced multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have demonstrated impressive zero-shot capabilities on vision–language tasks. In the biomedical domain, however, even state-of-the-art MLLMs struggle with basic Medical Decision Making (MDM) tasks. We investigate this limitation using two challenging datasets: (1) three-stage Alzheimer’s disease (AD) classification (normal, mild cognitive impairment, dementia), where category differences are visually subtle, and (2) MIMICCXR chest radiograph classification with 14 non–mutually exclusive conditions. Our empirical study shows that text-only reasoning consistently outperforms vision-only or vision–text settings, with multimodal inputs often performing worse than text alone. To mitigate this, …
The Evolving Landscape Of Social Education In The Uk: The Legacy Of Neoliberalism Affecting Uk Children And Those Who Support Them, And The Considerable Value Of Its Potential Counterbalance — Social Pedagogy, Robyn Kemp
Journal of Social Care
This paper examines the erosion of concern for the social and relational in the United Kingdom through four decades of neoliberal policy, and argues for social pedagogy as a principled and urgently needed counterbalance. Drawing on a career spanning public, charitable, and academic practice primarily with children in and on the edges of care, it traces how the introduction of neoliberalism under Thatcher in the 1980s — and its institutionalisation through New Public Management in the 1990s — systematically dismantled the relational, ethical, and communal foundations of work with children. The consequences are documented in stark statistical terms: rising school …
The Role Of Personality In Collegiate Athletes’ Indicators Of Performance And Injury Experiences – A Mixed Methods Study, Allison Traub
The Role Of Personality In Collegiate Athletes’ Indicators Of Performance And Injury Experiences – A Mixed Methods Study, Allison Traub
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This mixed methods study explores the impact of collegiate athletes' indicators of personality traits as attributed to athletic performance, injury experiences, and sport identity. Sports often emphasize physical abilities, yet the role of personality is equally significant—though it has received comparatively little attention in psychological research. This research addresses such a gap through examining how personality traits shape athletes’ competitive behavior along with coping strategies. The traits are defined within the 16 Personalities framework using Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and how it influences just how athletes recover. This research will explore research questions such as how personality affects college athletes' …
