Journal of Applied Sciences and Nanotechnology

This study investigates the addition of 10%, 20%, and 30% crushed brick waste (CBW) to Zurbatiya clay and firing the mixture at 1000°C for 8 hours to produce sustainable and energy-efficient bricks. The results showed that the overall density increased to 1.85 g/cm3 at 10% CBW, yet decreased to 1.4 g/cm3 at 30% due to the increase in porosity from 18% to over 30%. Consequently, thermal conductivity decreased from 0.5 to less than 0.3 W/m· K, enhancing thermal insulation. Also, Shear strength decreased from 15 MPa to 5 MPa but remained acceptable at the 10–20% ratios. Shrinkage improved …

Journal of Applied Sciences and Nanotechnology

The building industry must investigate sustainable alternatives due to the environmental impact of traditional construction methods and the growing depletion of natural resources. Using perlite (3–5 mm) to partially replace natural coarse aggregates in concrete production is one possible strategy. However, concerns remain regarding the performance of perlite in structural applications, particularly its effect on mechanical behavior and durability. This study examines the structural performance of concrete incorporating graphene and partially substituting perlite for coarse aggregates. Perlite was used at replacement levels of 5%, 10%, and 15%, and graphene was added at 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5% by cement mass. Cubic …

Empirical Evaluation Of A Cnn-Resnet-Rf Hybrid Model For Occupancy Rate Prediction In Passive Ultra-Low-Energy Buildings, Yiwen Liu, Yibing Xue, Chunlu Liu, Runyu Wang

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

Accurate occupancy information is critical for optimizing energy efficiency in buildings. Hybrid machine learning models have demonstrated great potential in previous studies; however, their application in passive ultra-low-energy buildings remains underexplored. This study conducts an empirical evaluation of real-time occupancy rate prediction using a CNN-ResNet-RF hybrid model based on multi-source environmental and behavioral data from a passive ultra-low-energy educational building. The model integrates Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) for local feature extraction, Residual Networks (ResNet) to enhance deep feature representation, and Random Forests (RF) for ensemble-based generalization. Indoor CO2 concentration exhibits the strongest linear correlation with occupancy rate (r = …

Physics

Reverberation mapping (RM) determines the mass of black holes (BHs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) by resolving the BH gravitational sphere of influence in the time domain. Recent RM campaigns have yielded direct BH masses through dynamical modeling for a sample of 32 objects, spanning a wide range of AGN luminosities and BH masses. In addition, accurate BH masses have been determined by spatially resolving the broad-line region with GRAVITY for a handful of AGNs. Here, we present a detailed analysis of Hubble Space Telescope images using surface-brightness profile fitting with state-of-the-art programs. We derive AGN luminosity and host-galaxy properties, …

From Courtrooms To Classrooms: Experiments In Survival, Justin Surdyka

Journal of Prison Education Research

The transformative powers of college-in-prison programs are known, but students get the grave of continued incarceration—even if we are fully rehabilitated. For the college-in-prison student who spends years in classes, degrees and parole denials are synonymous, especially for those of us who have committed violent off enses. We are educated but not redeemed in the eyes of the system. My classmates and I are the degrees behind the denials, the students behind the degrees, the prisoners behind the students, the human beings behind the prisoners who are the reason higher education in prison is praised for being transformative. Yet we …

The Impact of Foot Care Education Within the Unhoused Female Population: A Community-based Nursing Intervention

The unhoused population is a vulnerable community that faces many obstacles in accessing healthcare (Benadda et al., 2025). Many of these individuals face stigmas related to their economic and housing conditions. It is important for nurses to be able to identify risk factors that may increase the prevalence of health-related problems, including using public health models to implement disease prevention. When discussing this population, one crucial preventative measure includes foot care, which aids in the deterrence of infections and promotes overall health (Coates et al., …

Trust Before Treatment: Educating Nurses on Trauma-Informed Care for Sex Trade Survivors

Survivors of the sex trade often seek healthcare during some of the most vulnerable times in their lives, yet many report experiences of judgment, dismissal, or re-traumatization within clinical settings. Trauma-informed care is an approach that recognizes the lasting impact trauma can have on a person’s physical and emotional well-being and calls healthcare professionals to adjust their practices to promote safety, trust, autonomy, and empowerment. Research shows that implementing trauma-informed care improves patient well-being, enhances staff collaboration, and reduces the risk of further harm (Huo et al., 2023). …

Minimum Wages And Workplace Injuries, Michael Davies, R. Jisung Park, Anna Stansbury Mar 2026

Minimum Wages And Workplace Injuries, Michael Davies, R. Jisung Park, Anna Stansbury

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

How do minimum wage changes affect workplace amenities? Using the universe of claims from California, the US’ largest workers’ compensation system, over 2000-2019, we exploit geographic variation in state- and city-level minimum wages and local occupation-level variation in exposure to minimum wage changes to estimate whether minimum wage increases affect the rate of workplace injuries. We find a large adverse effect of raising minimum wages on injuries. A 10% increase in the minimum wage increases the injury rate by 7.2% in an occupation-metro area labor market which is fully exposed to the minimum wage increase. Our results imply an elasticity …

Efficient Energy-Stable Discontinuous Galerkin Schemefor The Non-Isothermal Cahn–Hilliard–Navier–Stokestwo-Phase Fluid Flow System, Guang-An Zou, Meiting Wang, Kejia Pan, Yin Yang, Xiaofeng Yang Mar 2026

Efficient Energy-Stable Discontinuous Galerkin Schemefor The Non-Isothermal Cahn–Hilliard–Navier–Stokestwo-Phase Fluid Flow System, Guang-An Zou, Meiting Wang, Kejia Pan, Yin Yang, Xiaofeng Yang

Faculty Publications

In this article, we propose a novel numerical framework for the non-isothermal Cahn–Hilliard–Navier–Stokes two-phase flow system, which couples the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations, the Cahn–Hilliard phase-field equation, and the heat transport equation to capture temperature-dependent two-phase flow dynamics. The pro-posed scheme achieves three major advances: (i) unconditional energy stability through a combined scalar auxiliary variable (SAV) and zero-energy-contribution (ZEC) approach, (ii) linearity and full decoupling of all variables while using a second-order temporal discretization, and (iii) efficient implementation via discontinuous Galerkin (DG) spa-tial discretization together with a second-order projection method for the Navier–Stokes equations. We rigorously prove the unconditional energy stability …

Construction Of Chinese Identities And Community: A Linguistic Ethnographic Study Of A Chinese Culture-Sharing Club At A Us University, Yuxuan Mu Mar 2026

Construction Of Chinese Identities And Community: A Linguistic Ethnographic Study Of A Chinese Culture-Sharing Club At A Us University, Yuxuan Mu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Chinese identity has been viewed as a debated and contested notion in sociolinguistics (Wong et al., 2021). Existing sociolinguistic research, which has centered on Chinese identity-related questions, such as “Who can be or cannot be Chinese?”, has been closely involved with the current political tensions between mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, as well as their associated linguistic tensions between simplified Chinese writing and traditional Chinese writing, and Cantonese and Mandarin. Building on these studies, this dissertation goes beyond the scope of Sinophone contexts traditionally examined in prior research (e.g., mainland China, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong) to examine how US …

Dual-Modal Tumor Imaging Using Functionalized Iron-Oxide Nanoparticles For Mri And Fluorescence, Kevin Secades Mar 2026

Dual-Modal Tumor Imaging Using Functionalized Iron-Oxide Nanoparticles For Mri And Fluorescence, Kevin Secades

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Accurate tumor imaging is essential for early cancer detection and treatment monitoring [1]. Technetium-99m (Tc-99m) is a commonly used radioisotope for medical imaging, but its reliance on gamma-ray emission poses challenges related to safety, accessibility, and regulatory constraints[2-5]. This research proposes the development of a dual-modal imaging approach by functionalizing iron-oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) with the fluorescent chromophore Cy5, enabling both MRI contrast enhancement and optical imaging for improved tumor specificity. IONPs provide strong T2-weighted MRI contrast [6], while conjugated near-infrared (NIR) chromophores allow for high-resolution fluorescence imaging [7], making this proposed system adaptable for both in vitro and in vivo …

Ocean Observing System Design: Transatlantic Acoustic Propagation For Acoustic Thermometry, Brian D. Dushaw, Dimitris Menemenlis, John A. Colosi

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Ocean acoustic thermometry is simulated in the North Atlantic using two global ocean state estimates to assess its potential contributions to the Global Ocean Observing System. Acoustic data were simulated for transatlantic acoustic propagation from Cabo Verde to Bermuda, a 4183-km archetypal path across the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Acoustic scattering by internal waves was simulated using a range-dependent, stochastic model added to the ocean state estimates. While the Ridge blocks acoustic propagation traveling deeper than about 3000 m, and internal-wave sound speed scintillations cause prohibitive scattering of later-arriving rays, it is apparent that O(10) acoustic ray arrivals on this path are …
