Optimization Of Orbital Trajectories Using Neuroevolution Of Augmenting Topologies, Nathan Wetherell May 2022

Optimization Of Orbital Trajectories Using Neuroevolution Of Augmenting Topologies, Nathan Wetherell

University Scholar Projects

This project aims to determine the feasibility of using NeuroEvolution of Augmenting Topologies (NEAT), an advanced neural network evolution scheme, to optimize orbital transfer trajectories. More specifically, this project compares a genetically evolved neural network to a standard Hohmann transfer between Earth and Mars. To test these two methods, an N-body simulation environment was created to accurately determine the result of gravitational interactions on a theoretical spacecraft when combined with planned engine burns. Once created, this simulation environment was used to train the neural networks created using the NEAT Python module. A genetic algorithm was used to modify the topology …

In this essay, Laura Lorenzo describes observations during study abroad at the University of Nottingham in England.

Mental Health Stigma And Psychological Help-Seeking In Adolescence, Laura Austin May 2022

Mental Health Stigma And Psychological Help-Seeking In Adolescence, Laura Austin

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although an overwhelming number of adolescents in the U.S. experience significant psychological distress, the majority of these youth do not receive formal mental health services. Mental health stigma has been identified as a significant barrier to psychological help-seeking during adolescence, with treatment stigma (or the stigma associated with seeking formal psychological services) as the strongest predictor of help-seeking when compared to other types of mental health stigma. Given the long-term impacts of untreated psychological distress in adolescence, more research is needed to understand the influence of mental health stigma on help-seeking during this developmental stage. Furthermore, more research is needed …

Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this quantitative regression analysis was to test examine the association between romantic relationships to athletic performance, after controlling for gender, sport, grade, and partner athlete status for student athletes at a private catholic university in South Texas. Being a student-athlete comes with a lot of pressure and expectations. Research has shown how performance from a student-athlete is crucial from keeping their scholarship from being on thin ice (Gord, 2018). Studies have helped point how relationships can influence athlete performance in some way, whether it is family, coach, teammates and friends, or romantic (Bolter & Weiss, 2012; Moll, …

The Successful Military Retirement Transition: A Phenomenology Of A Journey To Becoming Full, Ann Lee May 2022

The Successful Military Retirement Transition: A Phenomenology Of A Journey To Becoming Full, Ann Lee

Theses & Dissertations

Research Focus. Change and transition are life constants and are uniquely defined by the individual experiencing them—whether expected or unexpected, positive, negative, or neutral. Only the individual can determine the nature and impact of a transition experience. Military members transitioning from the military environment to civilian life after retirement experience change and transition on several levels—a career shift, a forfeiture of role and status as a military member, a lifestyle change, financial instability, a culture shift, and a loss of military community and friendships, to name a few. This transition represents an exit from, not just a job, but a …

The purpose of this research paper was to investigate the factors that influence a person’s access to and use of early intervention (EI) services. In the literature, there are demonstrated short- and long-term benefits for populations with disorders or delays associated with EI. Speech-language pathologists are one of many professionals that may work with EI clients, and they should be especially interested in ensuring that all individuals receive necessary services. Previous research suggests that race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status impact access to EI. This study examines possible methods of increasing access to EI for populations that are less likely to …

Study Objectives: The objective assessment of insomnia has remained difficult. Multisensory devices collecting heart rate (HR) and motion are regarded as the future of ambulatory sleep monitoring. Unfortunately, reports on altered average HR or heart rate variability (HRV) during sleep in insomnia are equivocal. Here, we evaluated whether the objective quantification of insomnia improves by assessing state-related changes in cardiac measures. Methods: We recorded electrocardiography, posture, and actigraphy in 33 people without sleep complaints and 158 patients with mild to severe insomnia over 4 d in their home environment. At the microscale, we investigated whether HR changed with proximity to …

From Historically First "Unary" Numbers, Through Egyptian Fractions, Roman Numerals, Leibniz's Binary Numbers And Kepler's Fractions To Modern Ideas Such As Calkin-Wilf Tree: A Unified Approach To Representing Natural Numbers And Fractions, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Christian Servin May 2022

From Historically First "Unary" Numbers, Through Egyptian Fractions, Roman Numerals, Leibniz's Binary Numbers And Kepler's Fractions To Modern Ideas Such As Calkin-Wilf Tree: A Unified Approach To Representing Natural Numbers And Fractions, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Christian Servin

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In elementary mathematics classes, students are often overwhelmed by different representations of numbers and corresponding operations: usual fractions, decimal representations, binary numbers, etc. What often helps is when students learn the history of these representations, see the limitations of seemingly reasonable representations like Roman numerals, and how other representations overcame these limitations. Still, history was developed somewhat randomly, so the historical sequence is still somewhat chaotic. We believe that providing a unified approach for all these representations would help describe their sequence in a more logical way and thus, help the students even more.

In our analysis, we explore the …

The Successful Adoption Of Teaching For Transformation: Utilizing Kotter's 8-Stage Process For Leading Change, Marcus Todd

Master of Education Program Theses

To grow and thrive, schools must be able to adapt and change. Educational institutions undergo many procedural, programmatic, and pedagogical changes, motivated by both external and internal forces, which push and pull a school to pivot from its current status quo. One such significant change is the implementation of Teaching for Transformation (TfT), a design framework for the creation of authentic, formational learning experiences rooted in a transformational worldview, with its core practices being employed in over 100 schools worldwide. To determine whether schools who have successfully transitioned to TfT practices have utilized methods from Kotter’s 8-Stage Process model for …

Graphic Diaspora: Reframing Narratives Of American Identity In Black Comic Books, Ashley Wilson May 2022

Graphic Diaspora: Reframing Narratives Of American Identity In Black Comic Books, Ashley Wilson

ETD Archive

Comic books with Black main characters have been the subject of much critical exploration over the years. Typical analyses of these comics have focused on identity politics and representation of Black characters. However, critical discussion has not yet determined a method for interpreting representation of Black characters within comic books. This study incorporates approaches to reading Black expressive texts, caricature, and narratives of Black characters written by white authors to analyze the comic books All Negro Comics, The Black Panther, Black, and Bayou. Additionally, it argues that Black-authored Black comics require a reframing of the text through an African American …

Anne Enright’S Reply To James Joyce: A Nation’S Tale Told Through The Gathering, Saide Harb-Ranero May 2022

Anne Enright’S Reply To James Joyce: A Nation’S Tale Told Through The Gathering, Saide Harb-Ranero

Master’s Theses and Projects

Particular to the Irish gothic, a postcolonial history seems to repeat itself in Anne Enright’s The Gathering. The victims of an atrocious sexual crime seem to circulate this hidden secret that all tragedy revolves around, yet no one is willing to speak about it. Enright suggests that the same oppressed past of Ireland’s history keeps creeping up to the surface, even in the twenty-first century. Veronica and Liam Hegarty, Enright’s main characters, demonstrate one of the main tropes of the gothic where no matter how long one might suppress a memory, it is bound to come back and reveal the …

Hideous Progeny, Dreaming Robots, And The Limits Of The Human, Scott Elliott May 2022

Hideous Progeny, Dreaming Robots, And The Limits Of The Human, Scott Elliott

Master’s Theses and Projects

This project is an in-depth exploration and synthesis of three different works: novels Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick, and the movie Bladerunner by Ridley Scott. I will be approaching each story as a separate entity unto themselves yet tie them together through the common lens of a need to explore what it means to be human, the treatment of those that fall outside of the norm, and how that leads to villainous representation. While the negative portrayal of disabled bodies has positively progressed since Frankenstein, this problem continues to endure …

Unveiling Characteristics Which Contribute To A Heightened Perceived Preparedness And Confidence In Interacting With And Teaching Students With Disabilities In Physical Education: A Narrative Inquiry, Nicole Maloney

Master’s Theses and Projects

Students graduating from physical education teacher education (PETE) programs are not being adequately prepared to teach students with disabilities. Their perceived lack of confidence and comfort may be due to lack of disability awareness, hands-on experience, and course content surrounding disabilities and inclusion. Ultimately, students with disabilities’ educational experiences may be negatively impacted- in regard to physical, emotional, and social growth—if their PE teacher lacks adequate preparedness. Students are also being placed in inclusion settings at a higher rate, making it even more imperative that teachers are adequately prepared, and students are given guidance from a knowledgeable source. The purpose …

The Graduation Pipeline: Investigating The Effects Of Juvenile Justice System Contact On High School Graduation Rates, Em Sandman May 2022

The Graduation Pipeline: Investigating The Effects Of Juvenile Justice System Contact On High School Graduation Rates, Em Sandman

Master’s Theses and Projects

Contact with the juvenile justice system can seriously impact life chances for youth. System contact can lead to significant challenges by disrupting paths to traditional life attainments. Research overwhelmingly points to negative projections from juvenile system exposure. Labeling theory has been used to determine poor educational outcomes, but little work has been done to directly gauge why contact affects the graduating for system-involved students. Further, concepts of strain theory have yet to be sufficiently applied to the prospect of completing high school. Given the systematic similarities between school and the juvenile justice system, the likelihood of reaching academic expectations required …

We present the first observation of the ωc0→ω-μ+νμ decay and present measurements of the branching fraction ratios of the ωc0→ω-ℓ+νℓ decays compared to the reference mode ωc0→ω-π+, (ℓ=e or μ). This analysis is based on 89.5 fb-1, 711 fb-1, and 121.1 fb-1 data samples collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at the center-of-mass energies of 10.52 GeV, 10.58 GeV, and 10.86 GeV, respectively. The ωc0 signal yields are extracted by fitting Mωℓ and Mωπ spectra. The branching fraction ratios B(ωc0→ω-e+νe)/B(ωc0→ω-π+) and B(ωc0→ω-μ+νμ)/B(ωc0→ω-π+) are measured to be 1.98±0.13(stat)±0.08(syst) and 1.94±0.18(stat)±0.10(syst), respectively. The ratio of B(ωc0→ω-e+νe)/B(ωc0→ω-μ+νμ) is …
