Design Of An Implanted Vascular Access Device With A Mechanical Septum, Mallory Ann Moffett, Katherine Rose O'Quinn
Honors Theses
As populations continue to age, their need for medical care continues to rise. This is seen by the large need for implanted vascular devices (IVADs). IVADs are essential for individuals with poor venous access and patients requiring long-term venous delivered drugs. This document will explore the existing IVADs, where they fall short, and where our device, the IrisPort system, works to solve the unmet needs of patients. The IrisPort system is a needle-less port system that allows for repeated venous access without the use of a non-coring needle. Prior art searches have shown that the IrisPort is a novel solution …

The worsening eviction crisis facing countries like the United States is caused by a variety of factors. The increasing costs of the housing market as large multi-national investing firms speculate on value of housing, to soaring rental prices, stagnating wages, inflation, and the devastation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Eviction creates destructive ripple effects throughout society as it often begets a negative feedback loop in which the evicted face housing discrimination leading to further eviction. Eviction is causally linked to issues with both mental and physical well being. To help those facing eviction this project proposes the creation of a …

“A Heart Felt Toy System”: How Can Materials, Structured, And Unstructured Play, Impact Toy Innovation, And Design, Mary Keenan Mcloughlin
Theses
The pervasiveness of single use plastic for toy production has created the cultural consciousness that most things are disposable. The moment you’ve deposited something in the trash you are no longer responsible for it and for some, it no longer exists. A material’s lifespan, origin, and sensory experience can be positive factors in its inclusion for a design. I chose to study organic materials and how they can be used for toys and aspects of play. As a case study, I created a felt vehicle toy system that rethinks the way we use organic materials for toy applications. I then …

INTRODUCTION
Aortic stenosis is a progressive narrowing of the aortic valve that can cause serious cardiovascular harm such as syncope, heart failure, and death if left untreated. Transfemoral-transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TF-TAVR) emerged in the last 10 years as an alternative for previously inoperable, high-risk patients. Studies suggest that monitored anesthesia for TF-TAVR using minimalist conscious sedation results in better outcomes (e.g., shorter length of stay, lower 30-day mortality) when compared to general anesthesia. However, there is a gap in knowledge of why conscious sedation is more successful. Recent studies have demonstrated the association of intraoperative mean arterial pressure (MAP) …

INTRODUCTION
17% of youth in the United States are obese and the incidence is rising. Among obese adolescents, girls with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) represent a vulnerable and understudied group. PCOS is strongly associated with dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adulthood, but studies of CVD in youth are limited. We hypothesized that obese youth with PCOS would show evidence of vascular dysfunction relative to girls with obesity without PCOS.
