White Dominion As Control: On Scientific Management And Racial Capitalism, Jonathan Masin-Peters May 2022

White Dominion As Control: On Scientific Management And Racial Capitalism, Jonathan Masin-Peters

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

This essay deepens the analysis of whiteness-as-dominion recently advanced by political theorist Ella Myers. Drawing on W.E.B. Du Bois, Myers focuses on the role that ideas of ownership and possession play in white racial identity. While I am persuaded that ownership and whiteness are cojoined, ownership does not necessarily imply control, although the former may be a prerequisite for the latter. I therefore argue that the idea of white dominion can be enhanced by paying greater attention to practices of racial control. More specifically, I focus on racialized modes of labor control via scientific management, or what recent scholars describe …

The Richness Of The Religious Life, Earl Clement Davis May 2022

The Richness Of The Religious Life, Earl Clement Davis

Sermons, 1905-1919

This sermon discusses three important elements to the religious life: (1) Evidence from nature of a powerful and ill-understood force behind the universe; (2) A realization that man is akin to God--both physically and more importantly mentally/morally; (3) A transcendent experience of being one with God and sharing God's purposes on earth. Davis is clearly motivated by his experiences in nature. He concludes that the religious life is not a sacrifice, but a "full complete, ever broadening life".

Growth And Salvation, Earl Clement Davis

Sermons, 1905-1919

Earl Davis approached this topic twice. While it is pretty clear that “Irrepressible Impulse to Growth” is the first attempt (it is short and does not really come to a conclusion), “Growth and Salvation” reads as a full completed sermon.

Here we provide both versions of the sermon. The primary downloadable document is for the combined text and translation of “Growth and Salvation". This is followed by the separate documents of the aforementioned, and then the corresponding three documents for “The Irrepressible Impulse to Growth.”

Aborting Women’S Rights, Manya Davis '24 May 2022

Aborting Women’S Rights, Manya Davis '24

Zeitgeist: A Journal of Politics, History, and Philosphy

On Wednesday, September 1st, 2021, Texas government officials passed a law banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy. Since then, a plethora of heated controversy regarding abortion rights has erupted throughout the United States. This controversy is being driven by two groups: pro-choice and pro-life. Pro-lifers argue that a fetus is a child the moment it is conceived, and a large part of their reasoning stands on the basis of religion. Therefore, many believe that abortion is considered murder. However, pro-choicers do not agree that it is morally correct to force one’s belief onto someone else. With the Christian demographic …

A Case Of An Elevated Tryptase, Sonya Parashar

Research Days

Introduction: Hereditary Alpha Tryptasemia (HαT) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by an elevated baseline tryptase that occurs up to 3% of the population and clinically resembles mast cell activation syndrome.

Case description: A full-term, 13-month-old female patient presented to Allergy and Immunology clinic for persistently elevated tryptase. Her initial symptom was non-bloody loose stools, but she later developed recurrent flushing, joint pain, constipation, and frequent nighttime awakenings. Her past medical history included gastroesophageal reflux disease. Family history was significant for an older sibling with history of flushing. At all visits, physical examination was normal. Tryptase ranged between 11.7 - …

To Conquer The Coast: Pensacola, The Gulf Of Mexico, And The Construction Of American Imperialism, 1820-1848, Maria Angela Diaz May 2022

To Conquer The Coast: Pensacola, The Gulf Of Mexico, And The Construction Of American Imperialism, 1820-1848, Maria Angela Diaz

Florida Historical Quarterly

Americans' dreams of empire appeared to become reality when the United States gained control over Florida in 1821. Yet although the U.S. controlled a significant portion of the Gulf Coast, the nation remained one among many foreign powers vying for dominance in the region, a fact that raised concerns about future expansion in the minds of many. As of 1821 the U.S. shared the coastline with a newly independent Mexico. At the same time, France, Britain, and Spain remained active in both the Gulf and the Caribbean.1 The combination of new republics and old colonial powers shaped the nature of …

Losing Lincoln: Black Educators, Historical Memory, And The Desegregation Of Lincoln High School In Gainesville, Florida, Kathryn Palmer May 2022

Losing Lincoln: Black Educators, Historical Memory, And The Desegregation Of Lincoln High School In Gainesville, Florida, Kathryn Palmer

Florida Historical Quarterly

In 1979 Nat Tillman, a Lincoln High School (LHS) alumnus and one of the Gainesville Sun's first African-American columnists, penned an article advocating for the preservation of Lincoln's history as a "pioneer of black education in Florida." Tillman interviewed Eric Roberts, a member of Lincoln's first graduating class of 1925 about why Lincoln's history as a historically black high school "deserved to be preserved." Like many of Florida's black high schools closed during school integration efforts of the late 1960s and early 70s, Lincoln's roots stretch back to Reconstruction. However, as Florida's second accredited black high school, Roberts praised the …

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 15(7): 599-615, 2022. The anaerobic metabolism determination is complex and the applied methodologies present limitations. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different calculations (MAOD vs. AOD) on the anaerobic contribution using the dynamic knee extension. Twenty-four male were recruited [Mean (SD); age 27 (1) years, body mass 90 (3) kg, height 181 (2) cm]. This study was divided into two independent experiments (EXP1: one-legged; EXP2: two-legged). In both experiments, it was performed a graded exercise test to determine maximal power (MP-GXT); 2-4 submaximal efforts (VO …

Stimulus Expectancy And Stimulus Response Of Caffeine On 4-Km Running Performance: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled And Crossover Study, Giovanna Rohloff, Diego Souza, Carlos Ruiz-Moreno, Juan Del Coso, Marcos Polito

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 15(2): 645-654, 2022. The placebo effect of caffeine has been poorly investigated in endurance exercise. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the placebo effect of caffeine on 4 km running performance in amateur runners. Twenty-two healthy and recreational male runners (25.5 ± 8.4 yrs; 75.0 ± 7.1 kg; 173.7 ± 6.3 cm) underwent a deceptive experimental design consisting of three different sessions: a) control (CON) in which participants did not ingest any substance; b) placebo (PLA) in which participants ingested a capsule filled with maltodextrin but they were informed that they would …

Relationship Between Ground Reaction Force Characteristics And Bone Mineral Density Of The Hip And Spine In Male Runners, Michele Leblanc, Allison Burdullis, Marcus Mckinnon, Steven A. Hawkins

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 15(1): 655-666, 2022. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between running ground reaction force (GRF) characteristics and hip and lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) values in male runners. Individuals who ran at least 48.3 km per week and were injury-free were recruited. Kistler force plates collected running vertical and anteroposterior GRF data. A Hologic Discovery W bone densitometer measured lumbar spine and five regional hip BMD values. Only runners who consistently used a rear foot strike pattern were included (n = 32). Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated between BMD …

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 15(1): 632-644, 2022. Force plates are commonly used when assessing vertical jumping performance but are not always affordable or practical tools for all testing situations. Twenty-four participants volunteered to take part in a study investigating the agreement between bilateral force plates and a new commercially available contact mat that records jump height, flight-time (FT), and FT of individual limbs during both countermovement (CMJ) and squat (SJ) jumps. Each participant performed six jumps of each type while standing on a contact mat placed upon a pair of in-ground force plates. When compared to the force plate …

Another Invisible Man: Alexander H. Darnes, M.D., Charles A. Tingley

Florida Historical Quarterly

The term "invisible man" has become a cliche for the evaporative effect of the Jim Crow Era on African American men and women and the memory of their lives.1 This article is the story of one such man of great stature who became invisible. What started as the search for a young slave boy named Aleck turned in to the re-discovery of Dr. Alexander Hanson Darnes, who was taken as a teenager to a U. S. Army cavalry post in the West, went through the Civil War as the personal valet of Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith, gained freedom through …

A Flower At Elmira: The Prisoner Of War Diary Of Wilbur Wightman Gramling, Robert Saunders, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

I-want-to-go-home-so-bad. These forlorn words, expressing such homesickness, appear lengthwise within the right margin on the last page of Wilbur Wightman Gramling's pocket diary, a day-by-day journal of his experiences while imprisoned at Elmira Prisoner-of-War (POW) Camp in New York during the Civil War. Struck by a minie ball in the right arm and captured at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 6, 1864, Gramling, a private in Florida's 5th Infantry, spent eleven months at Elmira Prison. The journal he faithfully kept throughout his imprisonment is the only known existing document of this type written by a Florida soldier.1

Runaway Slave Advertisements In Antebellum Florida: A Retrospective, Matthew J. Clavin May 2022

Runaway Slave Advertisements In Antebellum Florida: A Retrospective, Matthew J. Clavin

Florida Historical Quarterly

As the abolitionist minister's observation suggests, enslaved African Americans were neither content nor happy. Indeed, rom day-to-day acts of covert resistance to brazen acts of open rebellion, slaves in the antebellum United States daily proved the lie of paternalism as even a cursory glance at the historiography of the South over the last half-century attests. Nevertheless, for anyone still unconvinced of the American slaves' thirst for freedom, there is a large cache of historical records that obliterate the myth of black Southerners accepting their enslaved status passively. Published in independently owned newspapers in nearly every significant city and town in …
