Neurology Articles

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Vascular dementia (VaD) is a complex neurodegenerative disease affecting cognition and memory. There is a lack of approved pharmacological treatments specifically for VaD. In this study, we investigate the therapeutic effects of AV-001, a Tie2 receptor agonist, in middle-aged rats subjected to a multiple microinfarct (MMI) model of VaD.

METHODS: Male, 10-12 month-old, Wistar rats were employed. The following experimental groups were used: Sham, MMI, MMI+1 μg/Kg AV-001, MMI+3 μg/Kg AV-001, MMI+6 μg/Kg AV-001. AV-001 treatment was initiated at 1 day after MMI and administered once daily via intraperitoneal injection. An investigator blinded to the experimental groups …

Investigating Active Learning Through The Lens Of Student Engagement, Nicole Naibert May 2022

Investigating Active Learning Through The Lens Of Student Engagement, Nicole Naibert

Dissertations and Theses

Incorporating active learning into a course has been generally found to lead to improved student learning outcomes; however, not all students benefit from these environments to the same extent. Although active learning environments provide the opportunity for students to interact and engage with the material, whether a student decides to do so is completely up to them. Therefore, the goal of this dissertation was to begin exploring active learning environments through the lens of student engagement and relevant associated variables (i.e., self-efficacy and student perceptions). This was completed through three separate but related projects.

Project I focused on investigating flipped …

Examining The Effect Of Social Emotional Learning On Student Perceptions Of The Safety And Comfortability In The Theatre Classroom, Emily Wooten

Masters of Education in Teaching and Learning

This study examined the effects of social emotional learning (SEL) on student perceptions of safety and comfortability in the theatre classroom. The researcher implemented SEL lessons using a morning meeting/class meeting format. Data was collected using a pre-survey, field notes, and focus group interviews. Data was analyzed using the constant comparative method to look for recurring themes to use for poetic transcription. Four primary codes, entitled “Will You Please Join Us?,” “Friend or Foe?,” “Climbing the Mountain of Anxiety,” and “The Love of Theatre” were used to create their own unique poem demonstrating the thoughts and emotions of the students …

“I Can’T Calm Myself”: Mindfulness In A Special Education Resource Setting, Paige Schmidt May 2022

“I Can’T Calm Myself”: Mindfulness In A Special Education Resource Setting, Paige Schmidt

Masters of Education in Teaching and Learning

The purpose of this study was to examine how brief mindfulness practices influence students receiving special education in a resource setting that provides one-on-one support outside of the general education classroom. The researcher utilized three to five minutes of breathing exercises, stretches, and discussion every day before beginning instruction. Data was collected through observations, pre- and post-surveys, and post-activity interviews. The constant comparative method was used for analyzing data to find emerging or recurring themes in the data collected. Three major themes emerged from the collected data: social-emotional regulation, making a choice, and the flexibility of mindfulness. Through observations, four …

Why The U.S. Founders’ Conceptions Of Human Agency Matter Today: The Example Of Senate Malapportionment, Susan D. Carle May 2022

Why The U.S. Founders’ Conceptions Of Human Agency Matter Today: The Example Of Senate Malapportionment, Susan D. Carle

Texas A&M Law Review

This Article links the U.S. founders’ ideas about “human agency”—i.e., their understandings of the link between the individual and the social and political structure—with how they designed the Constitution and, in particular, how they designed the U.S. Senate as a non-majoritarian institution. I mine primary sources to show that although the founders struggled with many disagreements in drafting the Constitution, they shared an amalgam of historically received ideas about human agency derived from both liberal and civic republican traditions. I identify five such ideas and then parse which of them continue to pertain today. I argue that although contemporary and …

Forumless: Why Victims Of The Uyghur Crisis Should Be Able To Vindicate Their Claims In Federal Court, Chase Archer

Texas A&M Law Review

U.S. courts can serve as forums for victims of international human rights abuses to litigate claims against foreign defendants. Oftentimes, U.S. courts are the only option for foreign litigants who are unable to seek remedies in their own countries or in international courts. This Comment discusses the difficulties a victim of the Uyghur crisis would face attempting to use U.S. courts to litigate claims against the Chinese government or government officials under existing law. The purpose of this Comment is not to address any potential challenge to a claim but rather to address the claim preclusions common to foreign plaintiffs …

America’S Race-Based Caste Structure: Its Impact In College And Professional Sports, Timothy Davis May 2022

America’S Race-Based Caste Structure: Its Impact In College And Professional Sports, Timothy Davis

Texas A&M Law Review

Racial inequities in college and professional sports remain prevalent and persistent despite the awareness of such inequities by those with the power to effectuate change. This Article proposes that explanations frequently offered for the slow pace of progress often fail to account for the hierarchy derived from a race-based caste system embedded in American society. Relying on the work of author Isabel Wilkerson, Part II describes major pillars of America’s race-based caste structure. Part III examines how stereotypes of Blacks’ presumed intellectual inferiority and a lack of fitness for leadership roles adversely impact their access to positions of power in …

On The Generalizability Of Using Mobile Devices To Conduct Economic Experiments, Yiting Guo, Jason Shachat, Matthew J. Walker, Lijia Wei

ESI Working Papers

Recent technological advances enable the implementation of online, field and hybrid experiments using mobile devices. Mobile devices enable sampling of incentivized decisions in more representative samples, consequently increasing the generalizability of results. Generalizability might be compromised, however, if the device is a relevant behavioural confound. This paper reports on a battery of common economic games and decision-making tasks in which we systematically randomize the decision-making device (computer versus mobile phone) and the laboratory setup (physical versus online). The results offer broad support for conducting decision experiments using mobile devices. For six out of eight tasks, we find robust null results …

Disadvantaged Response: How To Improve Disaster Resiliency For Low-Income Families, Grace E. Crosthwaite

Honors Theses

Disaster resiliency is the ability of individuals and communities to anticipate, cope with, and deal with disasters through specific resources and awareness. However, at-risk populations, or those who have certain social disabilities, often lack the same level of resiliency to disasters as those who do not exhibit the same social vulnerabilities. Specifically, low-income families do not exhibit the same level of resiliency as other populations compared to other families and populations. Low-income families are often marginalized in disaster management, which plays a role in their lack of resiliency.

The following report will identify provides a general understanding of disaster resiliency …

Mutually Exclusive: Being Gay And Being A Man In E.M. Forster’S Maurice, Kimber Foreman May 2022

Mutually Exclusive: Being Gay And Being A Man In E.M. Forster’S Maurice, Kimber Foreman

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper outlines the impacts of English heteronormativity on E.M. Forster’s novel Maurice by exploring applicable cultural context and its reflection within the text. Maurice was published after Forster’s death, and as his only novel with explicit queer characters, is the best suited for parsing Forster’s own understanding of the society he lived in. With a primary focus on the characters of Maurice and Clive, the paper examines the dichotomy that Forster posits heteronormative English society creates between traditional English masculinity and the identities of gay men. This examination ultimately leads to the conclusion that Forster writes the Greenwood-bound fate …

How many of us treat them as electronic warehouses and never look at them again? In short, how many of us have no idea of how much really know? Repositories store so much more than just full-text articles, they are used to catalogue everything from artworks to zoom logs and everything in between and that breadth represents hidden but real …

Implementation And Evaluation Of An End-Of-Life Standardized Participant Simulation Into An Adult/Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program, Shannon Daly

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects

Palliative care interventions are in high demand due to patients living longer with chronic, life-limiting conditions. Nursing professionals are instrumental in the care of patients across their lifespan, and it is imperative that they receive end-of-life care training in their respective curriculums. The aims of this project were to 1) implement end-of-life content into an AGACNP program using the ELNEC curriculum and 2) to determine if the simulated environment affects the AGACNP students’ self-confidence and anxiety levels when making clinical decisions for end-of-life patients. As a result of the standardized participant (SP) end-of-life simulation, AGACNP students experienced an increase in …

Effects Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Health Behaviors And Mental Health During Pregnancy: A Systematic Review, Kara C. Middleton May 2022

Effects Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Health Behaviors And Mental Health During Pregnancy: A Systematic Review, Kara C. Middleton

Honors College Theses

The Coronavirus pandemic had many negative impacts on healthcare. During the COVID-19 pandemic, specialist care providers closed their offices to reduce transmission. Maternal healthcare was severely impacted. Mothers were unable to receive the prenatal and perinatal care they needed. Other specialist care, such as mental healthcare was severely impacted as well. There was also a lack of prenatal care occurring due to offices being closed. There is an established link between anxiety, depression, emotional eating, and Gestational weight gain. Gestational Weight Gain is associated with a higher prevalence of behavioral health conditions that were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Analysis Of The Light Responsive Azobenzene Peptide Nucleic Acid Duplexes, Kat Nguyen May 2022

Analysis Of The Light Responsive Azobenzene Peptide Nucleic Acid Duplexes, Kat Nguyen

Honors College Theses

Peptide nucleic acids (PNAs) are oligonucleotide analogues in which the sugar-phosphate backbone has been replaced by a pseudopeptide skeleton. Since PNAs use the natural nucleobases (Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine, Uracil, and Guanine) found in either DNA and/or RNA, they are able to hybridize according to Watson-Crick base-pairing to form duplexes. PNA is a promising therapeutic agent because they can function as antigene or antisense chemical agents. To further enhance their utility, we aim to incorporate a photoswitchable moiety using azobenzene. Here, we report the results of the synthesis and purification of a photoswitchable 11 mer PNA along with initial characterization efforts.

Subanesthetic Ketamine Infusion In Reducing Symptoms Of End-Of-Life Depression: A Case Report, Leanne Groban, Kavita Sharma

Aurora GME

The development of major depressive disorder in patients receiving hospice care often goes undiagnosed, as it is difficult to distinguish from preparatory grief or hypoactive delirium in this unique patient population. If this preliminary barrier of appropriate diagnosis is overcome, it can be quite difficult to properly select and adjust pharmacological therapy. Many well-established antidepressants take 4-5 weeks for maximal effectiveness, have various contraindications to patients’ co-morbid chronic conditions, particularly patients with cardiovascular disease, or may simply be ineffective. Herein, we present a case report of severe treatment-resistant depression in a hospice patient with end stage heart failure, and discuss …
