Standardizing Anticoagulant Hold Orders In Computerized Provider Order Entry, Alicia Beebe

Translational Projects (Open Access)

Medication safety remains a persistent challenge, particularly for high-risk anticoagulants where even minor communication failures can result in catastrophic bleeding or thromboembolic events. This translational project aimed to address the systemic risks associated with temporary medication holds in the electronic health record of a 10-hospital health system. The project used a phased approach combining quantitative chart audits, qualitative clinician interviews, and workflow and cause mapping to examine anticoagulant medication hold processes. Findings revealed design limitations, fragmented workflows, and usability challenges. Additionally, baseline analysis of September 2024 data revealed a substantial safety gap: Communication hold orders had a 15.05% medication error …

Building A Monitoring And Tracking System To Optimize Radiation Quality In Clinical Trials, Andrea Molineu Apr 2026

Building A Monitoring And Tracking System To Optimize Radiation Quality In Clinical Trials, Andrea Molineu

Translational Projects (Open Access)

Imaging Radiation Oncology Core (IROC) is funded by a grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). One of the grant requirements is that IROC provides an annual remote independent verification of radiation output for all institutions participating in NCI-sponsored clinical trials. This involves shipping acrylic blocks that hold dosimeters to each of the institutions. Each institution is assigned a month to receive a shipment. However, mailing is often delayed. The goal of sending 100% of the shipments in the month they are scheduled has not been reached. This delays the institutions' independent dose verification. The delay is detrimental because it …

More Harm Than Good: Criminal Penalties For Wage Theft, Alia Al-Khatib Apr 2026

More Harm Than Good: Criminal Penalties For Wage Theft, Alia Al-Khatib

University of Richmond Law Review

“Wage theft is a crime.” Workers, their advocates, and even some policymakers have made this declaration repeatedly to emphasize the severity of violations of wage and hour laws. In recent years, this campaign has moved beyond mere rhetoric into increased criminal enforcement. Various obstacles to seeking remedies through the civil system have buoyed this expansion. This Article critiques criminal strategies to remedy wage theft. It first identifies three spheres of harm caused by wage theft: (1) to individuals laboring in low- wage industries; (2) to the workplaces where employers engage in wage theft, and (3) to communities to which impacted …

Ex Post Transparency: Shattering The One-Way Mirror, Ruifeng Song Apr 2026

Ex Post Transparency: Shattering The One-Way Mirror, Ruifeng Song

University of Richmond Law Review

The digital world is becoming a one-way mirror: tech companies gain unprecedented knowledge of individuals who remain ignorant of how companies handle their data. Tech giants have been able to discreetly train their artificial intelligence models on vast troves of personal data, raising privacy concerns. This shows that we have yet to fully learn the lessons of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, where the infamous company misused the personal data of millions of people until the misdeeds were revealed by whistleblowers. A largely overlooked aspect of the scandal is that the law failed to enable timely detection of anomalies because data …

(Un)Celebrated Women: Three Women Authors And Their Imprint On The Gullah Geechee Literary Tradition, Raven Mariah Gadsden Apr 2026

(Un)Celebrated Women: Three Women Authors And Their Imprint On The Gullah Geechee Literary Tradition, Raven Mariah Gadsden

Theses and Dissertations

Three women authors, Laura Middleton, Julia Peterkin, and Zora Neale Hurston, are responsible for the creation of some of the most important Gullah Geechee literary images in the 1920s and 1930s. By examining the historical moments and movements which were active while these women were writing, it is obvious why these women are at the center of this conversation. Each of these women’s writing plants the seed for a Renaissance of Gullah Geechee representation. While Middleton's work never gets published, her documentation of black life in South Carolina for the Federal Writers' Project worked as a counter narrative to texts …

This study aimed to compare perspectives among mothers and fathers of individuals with AS to identify discrepancies and themes relating to stress, specific hardships, and caregiving roles. Parents of children with AS …

Weaponized Nostalgia And The Modern Woman: Patriarchal Insecurity In A Lost Lady And The Sound And The Fury, Grace Nicole Becker Apr 2026

Weaponized Nostalgia And The Modern Woman: Patriarchal Insecurity In A Lost Lady And The Sound And The Fury, Grace Nicole Becker

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the patriarchal nostalgia that resulted from men’s perceived feminization in modernity and how it manifests in the narrative framing of modern women in modernist literature. Niel Herbert from Willa Cather’s A Lost Lady and Jason Compson from William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury each embody contrasting masculine responses to the feminization of white manhood. Niel exemplifies the mourning of white masculinity that does not hinge on being antithetical to femininity, a sentiment which Greg Forter similarly identifies in Cather. Jason personifies an aggressive masculinity and repudiates women, blaming them, and other minority groups, for his own …

Fuel Flexibility, Gas Turbine Combustion, Laser Diagnostics, Lean Blow-Out, Austin Thomas Shealy Apr 2026

Fuel Flexibility, Gas Turbine Combustion, Laser Diagnostics, Lean Blow-Out, Austin Thomas Shealy

Theses and Dissertations

To address increasing global energy consumption, energy industries seek to implement alternative fuels and increase energy generation efficiencies to meet energy demands. However, alternative and bioderived fuels present both chemical and physical properties significantly different from traditional hydrocarbon fuels typically used for gas turbine power generation. Consequently, they present unforeseen technical challenges. To address these challenges, ammonia has been suggested for use as a hydrogen carrier fuel in gas turbines. Ammonia presents many challenges by having a low overall reactivity as well as low energy density both by mass and volume. To address ammonia’s unique combustion characteristics, two strategies have …

From Adolescence To Adulthood: The Impact Of Parental Support, Resilience, Academic Motivation, And Mental Health In Black Women & Girls: A Multi-Manuscript Dissertation, Jessica Mikaja Barnes

Theses and Dissertations

Fatherlessness in the Black community is a growing phenomenon that has been widely studied. Although this has been widely studied, there is limited literature that focuses on Black adolescent girls and Black women in early adulthood, more specifically, high school age and college aged women. The literature that has been previously published presents an overwhelmingly negative connotation when connecting Black girls and absent fathers. This multi-manuscript dissertation consists of two studies, both of which explore the impact of fatherlessness on resilience, parental support, and academic motivation, and mental health of Black girls and women. For the first study, I employed …

A Connected Life: Functional Communication, Social Participation, And Real-World Outcomes In Chronic Post-Stroke Aphasia, Lauren Marie Hammond

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines functional communication in persons with chronic post-stroke aphasia (PWA), with a focus on how communication ability is conceptualized, measured, and related to real-world participation. While traditional aphasia assessments primarily measure impairment-level language abilities, they often fail to capture the contextual, multimodal, and interactive nature of communication as it occurs in everyday life. Addressing this gap, the present work investigates functional communication from multiple perspectives, including measurement approaches, assessment development, and real-world communication outcomes.

Aim 1 presents a scoping review of functional communication assessments used in aphasia research and clinical practice. Studies were reviewed to identify formal and …

Politics And Intergenerational Conflict: Investigating The Impact Of Affective Polarization On Well-Being In The Vietnamese American Community, Van Phan

Theses and Dissertations

Vietnamese Americans are more likely than other Asian subgroups to identify as Republican. Despite this, Asian American youth, including Vietnamese Americans, still overwhelmingly identify with the Democratic Party. While political orientation could be a source of intergenerational conflict between Asian American generational groups, few studies assess these issues. The present study is an exploratory, hypothesis-generating study investigating the effect of affective polarization in politics on the relationship between intergenerational conflict and well-being for first-and-second-generation Vietnamese Americans. Results showed that affective polarization did act as a moderator for intergenerational conflict on perceived stress for both first-and-second-generation Vietnamese Americans. Specifically, Vietnamese Americans …

Quantum Spin-Like Behavior Of Elastic Guided Waves: Quantized Geometric Phase For Nde And Shm, Md Ebrahim Khalil Bhuiyan Apr 2026

Quantum Spin-Like Behavior Of Elastic Guided Waves: Quantized Geometric Phase For Nde And Shm, Md Ebrahim Khalil Bhuiyan

Theses and Dissertations

Ultrasonic guided waves are widely used in nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and structural health monitoring (SHM) for detecting defects and damage in engineering materials and structures. Conventional diagnostic features, such as attenuation of wave amplitude, shifts in time-of-flight, and frequency variations are widely used for damage identification. However, these metrics are inherently sensitive to environmental and operational variations, including temperature, pressure, humidity, sensor coupling conditions, boundary constraints, and external loading. Such sensitivities introduce significant uncertainty in signal interpretation, often obscuring damage-related signatures. Recent advances in wave physics have revealed that elastic guided waves exhibit intrinsic spin angular momentum (SAM), arising from …

Targeting Endothelial Dysfunction In Capillary Malformations: Mechanistic Insights And Adjunct Therapeutic Strategies, Mackenzie Azuero Apr 2026

Targeting Endothelial Dysfunction In Capillary Malformations: Mechanistic Insights And Adjunct Therapeutic Strategies, Mackenzie Azuero

Theses and Dissertations

Port-wine stains (PWS), clinically classified as capillary malformations (CM), are congenital vascular anomalies characterized by abnormally dilated dermal capillaries that persist throughout life and may progressively darken and thicken with age. Pulsed dye laser (PDL) therapy remains the clinical standard of care for PWS; however, complete lesion clearance is uncommon and many patients experience incomplete or temporary responses. Increasing evidence suggests that endothelial survival and vascular remodeling following laser exposure may contribute to lesion persistence and recurrence, highlighting the need for adjunct therapeutic strategies that target the underlying cellular mechanisms of vascular recovery. This thesis investigates endothelial dysfunction and therapeutic …

Recollection Of The Archaic Psyche: A Comparative Study Of Viacheslav Ivanov’S Realistic Symbolism And Carl Gustav Jung’S Analytical Psychology, Jack Wilson Dedmondt Apr 2026

Recollection Of The Archaic Psyche: A Comparative Study Of Viacheslav Ivanov’S Realistic Symbolism And Carl Gustav Jung’S Analytical Psychology, Jack Wilson Dedmondt

Theses and Dissertations

While nominally appearing disparate in their construction, the theoretical systems pioneered by Russian Symbolist poet Viacheslav Ivanov and Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung operate under parallel hermeneutics of inference concerning the symbolic comprehension of reality. This dichotomy is drawn between an immediate (conscious) stratum of sensible reality of Apollonian, concrete, individual, and intelligible forms, and a transcendent (unconscious) stratum of Dionysian, associative, collective, and nominally unintelligible forms. In the present investigation, we aim to identify the proximity between Jungian analytical psychology and Ivanov’s “Realistic Symbolism” in order to provide the groundwork for future application of Jungian methodologies as an interpretive …

Resting-State Functional Connectivity Of Dopaminergic Reward Pathways Across The Adult Lifespan, Julia Cardarelli

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the effect of age on three major dopaminergic reward pathways using resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Resting state imaging refers to low-frequency brain connectivity in the absence of task demands or directed thought patterns. The pathways included in this thesis are as follows: the nigrostriatal, mesolimbic, and mesocortical pathways. These pathways rely on dopamine and are known for a variety of functions, most notably regulating responses to rewarding and aversive stimuli. This analysis compared the connectivity between key regions of interest, where transmission originates in the midbrain and substantia nigra, and terminates in the orbitofrontal cortex, …

Caribbean Movements In Alejo Carpentier’S Écue-Yamba-Ó And Maryse Condé’S Traversée De La Mangrove, Gisselle Lopez Apr 2026

Caribbean Movements In Alejo Carpentier’S Écue-Yamba-Ó And Maryse Condé’S Traversée De La Mangrove, Gisselle Lopez

Theses and Dissertations

One of the broad questions this essay examines is how literature represents Caribbean cultural identity. This essay continues the conversation of how Caribbean cultures are formed, depicted, and defined in twentieth-century literature, specifically, in Alejo Carpentier’s Écue-Yamba-Ó and Maryse Condé’s Traversée de la mangrove. Although the novels are published within about fifty years from one another, both writers consider the question of what Caribbean cultural identity may look like. Carpentier’s Écue-Yamba-Ó follows the life of Menegildo, an Afro-Cuban man who works in the sugar plantations, who ends up killing a Haitian man. In his first novel, Carpentier writes from a …

Factorized Electron-Nuclear Dynamics: Theory Development And Implementation, Julian Stetzler Apr 2026

Factorized Electron-Nuclear Dynamics: Theory Development And Implementation, Julian Stetzler

Theses and Dissertations

In the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approximation, nuclei are treated as classical particles. The theoretical and computational approaches that go beyond it are impractical for all but the smallest chemical systems. However, such methods are necessary to simulate many photochemical and biological processes. This thesis discusses two important topics of research in this feld: frst, improving electronic structure theory to efciently describe quantum nuclei; second, developing a scalable quantum dynamics method, the factorized electron-nuclear dynamics (FENDy).

Following the BO approximation, the electronic structure of molecules is routinely examined for static arrangements of point nuclei, which is a highly useful premise but not …

Soil Macroinvertebrate Biodiversity Patterns In Congaree National Park And The Role Of Dna Barcoding, Sharon Ann Kendrick

Theses and Dissertations

Soil and leaf-litter invertebrates are important components of terrestrial biodiversity and contribute to key ecosystem processes such as decomposition, nutrient cycling, and soil formation. Despite their ecological importance, these communities remain difficult to document because many taxa are small, cryptic, or challenging to identify using morphology alone. This study examined patterns of soil macroinvertebrate biodiversity across habitats within Congaree National Park while also evaluating the usefulness of DNA barcoding for documenting taxonomic diversity. Sampling was conducted at 39 sites between September 2022 and October 2024 across upland, bottomland, and bluff habitats. Macroinvertebrates were collected separately from leaf litter and soil …

“Why, Marcus, So She Is”: An Examination Of The Father/Daughter Relationship In Shakespeare’S ‘Titus Andronicus’, Anna Elizabeth Cunningham Apr 2026

“Why, Marcus, So She Is”: An Examination Of The Father/Daughter Relationship In Shakespeare’S ‘Titus Andronicus’, Anna Elizabeth Cunningham

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is concerned with the father/daughter relationship between Titus and Lavinia in Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus. Scholarship on this relationship is sparse, and chapter two discusses the context that it is typically understood within, namely the father/daughter chastity pattern—in which fathers jealously protect their acquiescent daughters’ chastity from violation, ending in the daughter’s death. It is asserted that Titus and Lavinia fall outside of this pattern. Chapter three examines Titus and Lavinia’s relationship before her assault, asserting that Titus assumes the role of Roman first and father second, which guides his treatment of all his children. Lavinia is connected to …
