Strategic Resource Management In Pandemics: Integrating Capacity Planning With Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions For Covid-19, Ozlem Cosgun, Eyyub Kibis, Ali Dag, Burak Cankaya

Department of Information Management and Business Analytics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the urgent need for integrated healthcare resource planning to manage patient surges and reduce mortality. This study presents a novel optimization-based framework that jointly considers healthcare capacity planning and non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), including mask mandates, social distancing, and quarantining. The framework extends traditional compartmental models by distinguishing patient categories—such as hospitalized non-ventilator patients, ventilated patients, and ICU admissions—within a mixed-integer programming (MIP) structure that remains computationally tractable. Applied to the COVID-19 outbreak in New York City, the model optimizes the allocation of hospital beds and ventilators while minimizing deaths. Results show that combining high-effectiveness NPIs with …

Let's All Go To The Lobby: Examining The American Cold War Experience Through Film, Renaldo Gonzales Jr. Apr 2026

Let's All Go To The Lobby: Examining The American Cold War Experience Through Film, Renaldo Gonzales Jr.

GLI MA in American History Student Works

The films of the American film industry produced and released during the Cold War are as varied as the complex events that occurred throughout the entirety of the conflict. These films can provide an understanding of how the feelings and attitudes of the American people shifted and evolved as the Cold War progressed. This work will examine a small sample of these films, focusing on one film from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. By providing critiques and reviews of the film from the time of its original release, information about the motives of the director of the films being …

Improving Student Behavior Through Physical Activity Breaks, Raymond Duve Apr 2026

Improving Student Behavior Through Physical Activity Breaks, Raymond Duve

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Students struggle to remain on-task throughout long periods of time in class. This results in off-task behaviors and a lack of focus. As a result, this keeps students from maximizing their achievement. Research has shown that classroom activity breaks can help reduce off-task behaviors and improve on-task behaviors for students. This inquiry-based research study aims to find out if classroom activity breaks can improve on-task behaviors, classroom enjoyment for the students, and student behavior. The study used a quantitative approach via a student survey, a tally chart, and behavior log. The findings showed that students had fewer off-task behaviors and …

Teaching Behavioral Expectations Explicitly And Its Effect On Classroom Behavior In Elementary Classrooms, Jasmine Leigh Spann Apr 2026

Teaching Behavioral Expectations Explicitly And Its Effect On Classroom Behavior In Elementary Classrooms, Jasmine Leigh Spann

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This inquiry-based capstone project examined the impact of explicitly teaching behavioral expectations on student behavior and overall classroom functioning in an elementary classroom. The study was conducted in a third-grade classroom with 17 participating students over a six-week period. The identified problem was the loss of instructional time due to frequent minor disruptions, inconsistent transitions, and unclear behavioral expectations. The intervention focused on proactively teaching, modeling, practicing, and consistently reinforcing classroom expectations. Data was collected using quantitative behavior tracking logs, including the frequency of minor disruptions, major incidents, teacher redirections, and instructional time lost. Findings indicated a consistent decrease in …

Studying Quantum Optics And Spdc With Single Photon Experiments, Chloe Pistelli Apr 2026

Studying Quantum Optics And Spdc With Single Photon Experiments, Chloe Pistelli

Physics Student Projects

Quantum optics is a specialized area of physics that focuses on using light sources, lenses, mirrors, beam splitters, photon detectors, and other optics equipment to demonstrate the wave-particle nature of light. We take advan tage of the spontaneous down-conversion of photons through a beta-barium borate (BBO) crystal, which splits one higher energy photon into two lower energy photons, conserving energy. We confirm the down conversion in our experiment by precisely aligning two detectors in each of the expected paths of the two down-converted photons and counting the number of coincidences detected, or number of times a photon was detected in …

Asset And Deficit Thinking In English Instructors’ Mindsets And Feedback On Student Writing, Rebecca R. Simataa Apr 2026

Asset And Deficit Thinking In English Instructors’ Mindsets And Feedback On Student Writing, Rebecca R. Simataa

Education Doctorate Dissertations

Educators are trained to diagnose and fix gaps in students’ skills and knowledge. This pedagogy often leads to deficit thinking, where instructors blame students’ identities or backgrounds for challenges in school. With deficit thinking leading toward inequitable outcomes, recent research has responded with asset thinking to recognize students’ strengths, yet its intersection with instructors’ feedback remains largely unexplored. Drawing on deficit thinking scholarship (Davis & Museus, 2019; Valencia, 1997) and Yosso’s (2005) community cultural wealth model, this qualitative phenomenological study explored asset and deficit thinking in instructors’ mindsets and feedback practices. Participants consisted of five higher education English Language Arts …

Playing The Hermès Game: Quota Bags, Antitrust Law, And The Limits Of Consumer Protection In Luxury Markets, Madeleine Chou Apr 2026

Playing The Hermès Game: Quota Bags, Antitrust Law, And The Limits Of Consumer Protection In Luxury Markets, Madeleine Chou

William & Mary Business Law Review

Luxury fashion retail has become a behemoth of an industry. Through acquisitions and strong brand recognition, some brands have developed significant market power in the luxury retail space. Chief among these brands is Hermès, a luxury leather retail boutique known for its highly sought after quota bags, like the Birkin and the Kelly. Quota bags are handbags that can generally only be bought by customers who have developed a substantial purchase history and relationship with the brand. Through this sales model, Hermès has created what plaintiffs have alleged to be an antitrust tying scheme, in which the purchase of one …

Women With Will: The Power Of The Women Of The Renaissance, Madeline E. Stewart Apr 2026

Women With Will: The Power Of The Women Of The Renaissance, Madeline E. Stewart

Tenor of Our Times

Women of Italy in the Renaissance period were not powerless. They may or may not have had articulate power, but in many cases, they wielded an inarticulate power or influence that is more complex and difficult to define by modern terms associated with feminism. Feminism is simply anachronistic for this time, and the people of this time cannot be expected to have upheld ideals that had not been developed yet. Claims that women had no power or development in this era are false. Some excellent examples of some of the most powerful people in Italy politically were women, and they …

A National Security Strategy For The Middle East, Vanessa Rice, Rudy Torres, Addy Horgan, Joy Omosa, Mark Westfall

School of Public Policy Capstones

This National Security Strategy addresses the persistent national security challenges the United States faces in the Middle East, a region vital for global energy supply, economic connectivity, and a source of anti-American extremism. Recognizing the failures of past "haphazard experimentation," the strategy proposes a thoughtful, pragmatic plan prioritizing five distinct and congruent interest areas: Maintaining Regional Access, Supporting Regional Stability, Ensuring Energy Security, Defending American Citizens and Personnel, and Preserving and Protecting Western Ideals. The strategy outlines actions such as: countering Chinese and Russian influence through intelligence sharing and defense incentives; containing Iran via a new, permanent nuclear deal and …

To Work Or Not To Work? Lessons From Older Adults In Maine, Kimberly Snow, Mary Lou Ciolfi, Sarah Currie, Catherine Taylor Apr 2026

To Work Or Not To Work? Lessons From Older Adults In Maine, Kimberly Snow, Mary Lou Ciolfi, Sarah Currie, Catherine Taylor

All Cutler Institute Publications

Work in later life is currently widely discussed for myriad reasons including that  many older adults want or need to work well past typical retirement age; employers  want and need the expertise, experience, and reliability of older workers; social and  health benefits often accompany later life work; anti-ageism awareness is  heightening the visibility and value of older workers; and economists and  demographers cite the importance of a dependable workforce that includes older  adults. The topic of later life work intersects with several other disciplines in social  science, business, health, technology, communications, and data collection - among  others - presenting opportunities …

Hyphenated America: The Story Of Swedish Immigrants In The 20th Century, Ryan D. Coons Apr 2026

Hyphenated America: The Story Of Swedish Immigrants In The 20th Century, Ryan D. Coons

Department of History

This thesis examines the memorialization of two Swedish immigrants John Ericsson and Joe Hill by their contemporaries. The first section, focusing on socially mobile upper class Swedish immigrants who immortalized Ericsson as a symbol of their "Americanness," The latter documents the life of Joe Hill and the IWW. His labor activism forever typified Hill as an outside foreigner. Both Ericsson and Hill's actual lived experience demonstrate a more complex weaving between Swedish and American. Ericsson frequently confirmed a loyalty to his native Sweden, even with his final wishes being to be buried under Swedish soil. Hill on the other hand, …

Trialoguing About Engaging With Communication And Language In Relation To Mathematics And Its Education, David Pimm, Jenni Ingram, Núria Planas

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This is our introduction to the series of eight articles in the first part of the double special issue on the challenges of ‘Engaging with communication and language in relation to mathematics and its education’. In the current article, we think together about ‘communication’ and ‘language’ in relation to mathematics and its education, by turning to reflections and examples from our decades of work as researchers and teacher educators, and in response to the articles in this first part. Following the preamble, most reflections are presented in the form of a fresh trialogue, through which we share some perspectives and …

Insurance And The Law Of Artificial Intelligence, Kenneth S. Abraham, Catherine M. Sharkey Apr 2026

Insurance And The Law Of Artificial Intelligence, Kenneth S. Abraham, Catherine M. Sharkey

Connecticut Insurance Law Journal

This Essay predicts that concerns about the insurability and insurance of AI liability will prove to be either exaggerated or unwarranted as the future unfolds. AI liability is already covered by a number of existing forms of “silent” liability insurance. We also predict the growth of “affirmative” AI insurance that expressly covers specified AI losses. There are already tiny bits of such insurance. That is how cyber insurance began, and it is now a thriving, $16.6 billion business in the U.S. alone. We believe that affirmative AI insurance will develop in a similar fashion, and that courts should anticipate such …

Revisiting The Hydrostatic Assumption In The Marine Atmospheric Surface Layer, Karina Griffin Apr 2026

Revisiting The Hydrostatic Assumption In The Marine Atmospheric Surface Layer, Karina Griffin

Honors Theses

The marine atmospheric surface layer (MASL), defined as the lowest ~100 m of the atmosphere overlying the ocean, is a complicated environment influenced by air-sea interactions and regional  weather patterns. In the absence of air motion, air pressure in the MASL decreases with altitude at  a constant rate due to the reduction in weight of the overlying air column. This relationship is  defined by a linear hydrostatic equation and is applied under the assumption that any dynamic  vertical pressure gradients will be small relative to the hydrostatic pressure gradient. The  hydrostatic assumption is commonly applied in the MASL despite the …

Effects Of Ndbi With Just-In-Time Programming Of Vsds On Communication Of Children With Asd, Jenna M. Rogers Apr 2026

Effects Of Ndbi With Just-In-Time Programming Of Vsds On Communication Of Children With Asd, Jenna M. Rogers

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a prominent neurological and developmental disability that often requires communication support, such as Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Visual Scene Displays (VSDs) are an AAC support that directly immerses in the user’s life, using images from real environments the user has or may experience. Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Intervention (NDBI) is an evidence-based approach to early intervention that targets social communication during naturalistic routines, including those who rely on AAC support to communicate. Despite recent research indicating that combining NDBI and AAC is a promising approach (Pope et al., 2024), no studies to date have examined …

The Influence Of Older Age On Rbc Transfusion Decisions In Icu Patients, Caroline Schaap, Jorinde Raasveld, Florian Reizine, Boillot Corentin, Jimmy Schenk, Sanne De Bruin, Merijn Reuland, Claudia Van Den Oord,, Andrew Flint, Marcus Lance Apr 2026

The Influence Of Older Age On Rbc Transfusion Decisions In Icu Patients, Caroline Schaap, Jorinde Raasveld, Florian Reizine, Boillot Corentin, Jimmy Schenk, Sanne De Bruin, Merijn Reuland, Claudia Van Den Oord,, Andrew Flint, Marcus Lance

Anaesthesiology, East Africa

Objectives: RBC transfusions are common in the ICU. Recent studies suggest that a restrictive transfusion policy is noninferior or superior to a liberal policy. However, few studies focus on the influence of age in transfusion. In elderly ICU patients, reduced physiologic reserves may shift the perceived risk-benefit balance of transfusion, potentially leading to different transfusion practices. This study examines whether transfusion practices in ICU patients differ across patient age.

Design: This is a substudy of the International Point Prevalence Study of ICU Transfusion Practices (InPUT), a global, multicenter, prospective observational cohort study.

Setting: ICUs from 233 centers …

New Insights From Old Sources: Using Hot Spot Analysis Of Fire Insurance Documents To Characterize The C. 1800 Built Environment Of Fredericksburg, Va, Grace Hannah Buck

Research and Creativity Symposium

The field of historic preservation makes use of many types of archival resources to understand past events, practices, and spaces that would otherwise be difficult to parse from extant objects.  Though they can be used in their initial state, application of geospatial methods to certain archival resources can improve their ease of use, reveal missing context, or provide new insight to the information they hold.  In that vein, this study applies geospatial analysis to a collection of historic insurance policies issued by the Mutual Assurance Society (MAS) of Virginia (1796-1867) for buildings in Fredericksburg, VA, at the turn of the …

Implementing A Clustering Framework On Distributional Bee Data, Roheel Nawaz

Research and Creativity Symposium

Understanding spatial patterns in biodiversity is important for identifying how ecological communities are structured across landscapes. Clustering methods provide a useful way to detect non-random species distributions and reveal potential environmental or geographic influences. In this study, we applied a clustering framework to a large long-term bee abundance dataset from the Mid-Atlantic United States to evaluate community structure across regions of Maryland, Delaware, and Washington, D.C.

The dataset included over 1,100 sites and more than 3,000 transects. Because sampling methods were not fully standardized, abundance data were converted to presence/absence and analyzed using the Jaccard index to measure site similarity. …

Dipl 3850/Core 3850 Church, State, And Politics In Latin America, Benjamin Goldfrank Phd

Diplomacy Syllabi

This course has two central objectives: to provide students with an understanding of the evolving role of religion in Latin American politics, with a primary emphasis on the role of Catholicism and the Catholic Church from the period of the Second Vatican Council until the present; and to provide students an opportunity to reflect on the normative questions of how religious beliefs and religious institutions should affect politics and of how different political systems and state policies should affect the practice of religion. Major themes, examined through both Catholic and non-Catholic perspectives, include the institutional relationship between the Catholic Church …
