In order to reduce the economic and ecological impacts of aquatic alien species, studies are warranted across major taxonomic groups, geographic regions, and habitat types. This study addressed the dissolved calcium levels in Kentucky Lake and their implications for one of the top-ranked invasive species, the zebra mussel, and its colonization.  Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) are well known for their “biofouling” capabilities, costing billions of dollars (for northeastern and midwestern states) in their removal from industrial, public, and power plant water supply lines. Calcium is one of the essential elements that contribute to the growth and reproduction of zebra …

Angular And Distance Estimation In Multi‑Antenna Wireless Communication Systems, Pouria Zand, Sunil Kumar Apr 2026

Angular And Distance Estimation In Multi‑Antenna Wireless Communication Systems, Pouria Zand, Sunil Kumar

Defensive Publications Series

Precise distance estimation between a primary computing device and a pair of wireless earbuds is often limited by the unreliability of Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) methods. This disclosure describes a method for a coordination framework for distance and orientation estimation using Bluetooth® Channel Sounding (CS). In this method, a secondary earbud acts as a passive listener to phase‑based ranging (PBR) exchanges between the primary device and a primary earbud. By sharing configuration parameters (e.g., timing and pseudorandom seeds) the secondary earbud sniffs signal exchanges to enable the primary device to mathematically calculate secondary distance measurements. Additionally, dual‑band operation is …

Rib‑Divided Speaker Back Chamber For Preventing Sound Absorbing Material Accumulation, Yuting Tsai Apr 2026

Rib‑Divided Speaker Back Chamber For Preventing Sound Absorbing Material Accumulation, Yuting Tsai

Defensive Publications Series

Small speaker modules often utilize sound absorbing material within a back chamber to increase bass sound pressure. However, because manufacturing processes frequently leave these chambers partially unfilled, the material can shift and accumulate in different areas depending on the orientation of the module or the effects of forces acting on the modules (forces such as gravity or centrifugal force). This movement may alter resonant frequencies and lead to inconsistent acoustic performance.

This document discloses a speaker module that includes an internal back chamber partitioned into multiple smaller sections by integrated ribs. The partitioned sections contain sound absorbing material. The module …

Speeding Up Expert Parallelism By Replacing All-To-All By All-Gather And Reduce-Scatter Collectives, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

The technology described in this paper relates to parallel processing in machine learning models, particularly speeding up expert parallelism in mixture-of-expert (MoE) architectures. A technique for replacing traditional all-to-all network collective communications with all-gather and reduce-scatter operations is proposed. For expert dispatch, accelerators can locally perform routing and top-k calculations by utilizing an all-gather operation and discarding unassigned tokens. For expert collect, a reduce-scatter operation can combine expert output activations over the network. These collective communication strategies can decrease network payload sizes and improve bandwidth utilization, particularly as the number of experts activated per token increases. Thus, training and inference …

Entwurzelt, Melanie Fischer Apr 2026

Entwurzelt, Melanie Fischer

Theses and Dissertations

Entwurzelt (Uprooted) is an installation that explores the emotional landscape of displacement-trauma, grief, and the search for belonging in the aftermath of war and unrest. The vessels in this installation evoke the presence of a forest--each one a symbolic tree, rooted in memory and shaped by personal and collective histories. Being torn from the familiar means leaving behind everything except memories and carrying a void that may never be fully filled. Yet, in unfamiliar places, fragments of comfort can be found--echoes of what once was. For me, the forest is more than a memory--it is a bridge between past and …

Head Shot, Joanmarie Ilaria Davoli Apr 2026

Head Shot, Joanmarie Ilaria Davoli

Mercer Law Review

The prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment in the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution requires that execution methods avoid “superadding pain.” The U.S. Supreme Court has held that the imposition of a death sentence should include no additional pain beyond that needed to kill. That means, for example, that while pain may be inherent in the method of killing, torture is prohibited. As concerns about the pain involved in lethal injections has increased, states have begun executions by shooting inmates in the heart and by suffocation through gas mask. These methods have been used despite evidence that they superadd …

Deliberately Silenced, Rachel Kincaid Apr 2026

Deliberately Silenced, Rachel Kincaid

Mercer Law Review

The Prison Litigation Reform Act is celebrating its 30th birthday this year. It was designed to make it harder for incarcerated people to file lawsuits challenging the constitutionality of their conditions of confinement and to restrict their remedies even when they do so successfully. It has been wildly effective at achieving those objectives. It has also propped up mass incarceration and facilitated the persistence of dismal conditions of confinement in carceral facilities in the United States.

The PLRA’s exhaustion requirement—arguably its most damaging provision—silences carceral voices without regard for the merit of their complaints. It does so by mandating …

Fallow Ground, Eli Kerns Apr 2026

Fallow Ground, Eli Kerns

Theses and Dissertations

Fallow Ground refers to the agricultural practice of intentionally leaving a field unseeded for a year or more in order to restore fertility and interrupt cycles of depletion. Although fallowing is a beneficial and necessary practice, the term has also come to signify waste or a lack of productivity. This double meaning is central to the work, reflecting a central contradiction: that withdrawal can be as vital as effort, and that rest, like labor, can function as a deliberate and sustaining act. The question I explore in this work is how to organize, understand, and live with these contradictions. Through …

Translationally-Relevant Tumor Resection Model For Murine Preclinical Models Of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Currently, the first-line treatment for the most common form of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), is surgical resection, followed by risk-adapted treatments, such as chemoradiotherapy. However, with the current standard of care and even the emergence of new treatments, such as checkpoint blockade, the overall survival for advanced, recurrent disease remains high, and the prevalence of head and neck cancer is projected to continue to increase in the coming years. Thus, deeper investigation into current standard-of-care modalities, in addition to novel therapeutics, is necessary to translate potential and promising treatment options to …
