An Examination, Analysis, And Evaluation Of The Employee Onboarding Process In A Southeastern University, Julie G. Brown May 2026

An Examination, Analysis, And Evaluation Of The Employee Onboarding Process In A Southeastern University, Julie G. Brown

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The onboarding phase is one of the most impactful moments in an employee’s life cycle (Baker & DiPiro, 2019; Kumar & Pandey, 2017; Ritz et al., 2023). New employees’ ability to adjust to their jobs, develop working relationships, and feel a sense of belonging during onboarding influences their decision to remain with the organization (Hassan, 2020; Kumar & Pandey, 2017; Narayansany & Isa, 2021). Creating a positive and engaging experience for employees at the beginning of their time with the organization could help increase job satisfaction and create a better sense of belonging and organizational commitment (Blount, 2022; Pike, 2014). …

Anxiety Or Advantage?: Detecting Malingered Symptoms In College Students Seeking Academic Accommodations, Samantha N. Dean

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Academic accommodations support equitable access to education for students whose mental health conditions meaningfully impair academic performance. Concerns exist regarding the potential to exaggerate or fabricate anxiety symptoms. This study examined whether cognitive tasks can differentiate credible generalized anxiety from malingered anxiety among college students. Participants were classified into probable GAD, malingering anxiety, or low GA control groups using a structured diagnostic interview and self-report measure. Participants completed working memory tasks (1-back and 3-back), a modified emotional Stroop task, and symptom validity tests. Malingering and probable GAD groups reported comparable anxiety symptom endorsement and severity. Working memory accuracy did not …

Changes In Avian Capture Rate And Migration Phenology Across 37 Years At A Coastal Barrier Island In Georgia, Ryan Davenport May 2026

Changes In Avian Capture Rate And Migration Phenology Across 37 Years At A Coastal Barrier Island In Georgia, Ryan Davenport

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Migration is one of the riskiest periods in a bird’s yearly cycle, and monitoring migratory trends helps us understand how birds are impacted by the changing world. Here, I present an analysis of 37 years of fall bird banding data collected at the Jekyll Island Banding Station in Georgia. Capture rates of Neotropical migrants on Jekyll have declined 50-90% in many common species, and the mean ordinal passage date of Gray Catbird and Western Palm Warbler have shifted 8 days later. Landcover analysis of the island yielded non-significant results; therefore, human-caused habitat change on breeding and wintering grounds are likely …

Attention After Adversity: Examining Temperament As A Protective And Risk Factor, Claire N. Beach

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Attentional control (AC) is an executive function referring to the ability to attend to pertinent information in the face of distractions. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are characterized by various forms of abuse and neglect experienced before the age of 18. Temperament is an early-appearing variation in attention-related self-regulation that is thought to be largely influenced by genetics. This study assessed the effect of ACEs on attentional control, the role of temperament as a protective/risk factor, and individual differences through eyetracking. Results showed no direct relationship between ACEs and attentional control, however, ACEs were consistently associated with higher negative affect and …

Thermodynamic Evaluation Of Cobalt-Ferrite Based Redox Reactions For Solar Thermochemical Conversion Of Co2 Into Fuels, Tavine S. Legore-Lewis May 2026

Thermodynamic Evaluation Of Cobalt-Ferrite Based Redox Reactions For Solar Thermochemical Conversion Of Co2 Into Fuels, Tavine S. Legore-Lewis

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The solar thermochemical conversion of carbon dioxide into synthetic fuels represents a promising pathway for mitigating anthropogenic CO₂ emissions while enabling the production of carbon neutral energy carriers. This study investigates the use of cobalt ferrite (CoFe₂O₄) as a redox-active metal oxide for two step solar thermochemical CO₂ splitting to produce carbon monoxide, a key component of syngas. Analysis showed that increasing εgg from 0.0 to 0.95, consistently strengthened heat recovery in the inert‑gas and oxygen cooling stages, which in turn sharply reduced the auxiliary heating loads for both Ar and CO₂. These reductions propagated through the system, lowering the …

“It Only Takes One Time, And They Will Open A File On You”: Black Maternal Decision-Making, Values, Vigilance, And The Emotional Toll Of Parenting Young Children Under Systemic Scrutiny, Kathryn Warren Barnes May 2026

“It Only Takes One Time, And They Will Open A File On You”: Black Maternal Decision-Making, Values, Vigilance, And The Emotional Toll Of Parenting Young Children Under Systemic Scrutiny, Kathryn Warren Barnes

PhD of Social Work

The United States child protection system (CPS), organized around safety, permanency, and well‑being, often produces harmful outcomes for Black families, particularly mothers of infants and toddlers during critical developmental periods. Despite longstanding evidence of racial disproportionality, social work and CPS research rarely centers Black mothers’ lived experiences, reinforcing deficit‑based assumptions grounded in white, middle‑class norms.

This critical phenomenological study centers the perspectives of twelve first‑time Black mothers in Boston who are not currently involved with CPS. Guided by structural social work theory, intersectionality, and Black feminist thought, the study examines how mothers navigate decision‑making within the early childhood ecosystem and …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Coastal marshes, recognized as effective organic carbon (OC) sinks, have gained attention for their potential contribution to climate mitigation through protection and restoration. However, the climate mitigation potential of Nordic coastal marshes remains understudied, likely due to their heterogeneous and often non-tidal nature. To fill this gap, we examined soil OC storage and accumulation rates, and the effects of grazing, a common management practice, across eight Nordic coastal marsh areas spanning broad climate and environmental gradients. We also assessed soil methane emissions in selected areas. The Nordic marshes studied store a median of 7 kg OC m−2 (interquartile range, …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Much has been written about the important role of social support networks (SSNs) for the well-being of older adults, encompassing their social, emotional and practical needs. Less is known about what happens to the SSNs of older people when they migrate, and even fewer studies have examined the impact of different forms of capital on these networks. Drawing on ethnographic interviews and participant observation with 22 older Vietnamese migrants in Australia (2020–21), this paper explores the influence of different forms of social, cultural, economic and symbolic capital on their SSNs. Data analysis comprised egocentric social network analysis of the connections …

Comparative Fatigue Analysis Of Cf-Pla Metamaterial Bone Plates For Orthopaedic Fixation, Ani Daniel, Hamed Bakhtiari, Barun K. Das, Muhammad Aamir, Majid Tolouei-Rad

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Bone plates are widely used in orthopaedic surgery to stabilise fractured bones and support healing following traumatic injuries or osteotomies. However, conventional metallic bone plates suffer from stress shielding and stiffness mismatch with bone, which can hinder optimal healing. Additive manufacturing enables the incorporation of novel metamaterial architectures into polymer-based implants to enhance mechanical properties. The fatigue behaviour of these implants during the healing period is critical to ensuring their structural integrity and long-term performance. In this study, the compressive fatigue performance of fused deposition modelling (FDM)-printed carbon fibre-reinforced polylactic acid (CF-PLA) bone plates were investigated. Four metamaterial structures—tetrachiral, re-entrant, …

Thermo-Hydro-Chemical Coupled Numerical Modeling Of Hydrogen-Thermal Co-Development In Hydraulically Fractured Peridotite, Jiacheng Dai, Zhonglin Ma, Yunzhi Yue, Yujie Yuan, Shouceng Tian

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Hydrogen generation through serpentinization reactions in peridotite formations under high temperature conditions represents a promising avenue for subsurface hydrogen production. However, the thermal energy in the formation environment have not been sufficiently considered. To integrate hydrogen production with thermal energy development, this study develops a thermo-hydro-chemical coupled numerical model, which is used to investigate hydrogen-thermal co-development in hydraulically fractured peridotite. Given that the hydrogen-thermal co-development process involves fluid flow, heat transfer and serpentinization reactions, the governing equations are formulated based on Darcy flow and energy conservation equations, with serpentinization kinetics incorporated through the reactive source terms. To evaluate hydrogen production …

Beyond The First Bout: Adaptations To Repeated Injuries Across Physiological And Pathological Conditions, Cory W. Baumann, Christopher P. Ingalls, Kazunori Nosaka, Jarrod A. Call

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Skeletal muscle exhibits remarkable plasticity following injury, yet most research has focused on responses to a single bout of eccentric contractions. This review addresses adaptations to repeated eccentric contraction–induced injuries across physiological and pathological conditions, with emphasis on insights from preclinical rodent models. In healthy muscle, the repeated bout effect (RBE) reduces strength loss and accelerates recovery after subsequent bouts. However, these adaptations are highly condition dependent. Aging can attenuate the RBE, while dystrophic muscle remains vulnerable to repeated injury despite compensatory remodeling. Other factors, including but not limited to, chronic alcohol intake and malignant hyperthermia can influence these responses, …

Hydrologic Performance Evaluation Of Geogrid- Geotextiles Integrated Expansive Clayey Slopes, Robi Sonkor Mozumder May 2026

Hydrologic Performance Evaluation Of Geogrid- Geotextiles Integrated Expansive Clayey Slopes, Robi Sonkor Mozumder

All Theses

Expansive clay embankment slopes are highly susceptible to climate-driven wetting-drying cycles that reduce matric suction, weaken shear strength, and increase the risk of surficial failure. While geosynthetics are widely used for mechanical stabilization, their field-scale hydraulic performance under seasonal climatic conditions remains insufficiently understood. This study evaluates the dual hydraulic-mechanical behavior of a geogrid-integrated geotextile geocomposite in expansive clay embankments under natural environmental exposure. Two field-scale embankment slopes (1.83 m × 1.07 m × 1.22 m, 1H:1V) were constructed using high-plasticity clay (CH, PI = 47.7–51.2). One slope was reinforced with three horizontal layers of geogrid-integrated geotextile, while the other …

Stromal Interaction Molecule (Stim) Proteins In Microglia And The Impact On Store-Operated Calcium Entry (Soce) And Spinal Cord Injury Recovery, Norah G. Hill May 2026

Stromal Interaction Molecule (Stim) Proteins In Microglia And The Impact On Store-Operated Calcium Entry (Soce) And Spinal Cord Injury Recovery, Norah G. Hill

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

In spinal cord injury (SCI), worsening functional outcomes are largely because of secondary injury processes and prolonged chronic inflammation. A major contributor of secondary injury is overload of intracellular calcium, causing neuronal overexcitation and persistent inflammatory responses. One of the primary mediators of calcium entry into the cell is store-operated calcium entry (SOCE). In SOCE, sensors detecting calcium depletion from the endoplasmic reticulum stores are called STIM proteins (1-2). When calcium is low in the cell, STIM proteins will activate Orai channels to open, allowing for the influx of calcium into the cell. The purpose of this study was to …

The Influence Of Valence On Action Control: A Comparison Of Simon Effects In The Extrinsic Affective Simon Task (East) And The Spatial Simon Task, Yaara Aleissa May 2026

The Influence Of Valence On Action Control: A Comparison Of Simon Effects In The Extrinsic Affective Simon Task (East) And The Spatial Simon Task, Yaara Aleissa

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

People adjust their thoughts and actions in response to a changing environment every day and emotions may influence these actions. Understanding how emotion impacts action control in situations where emotion is central to the action (task-relevant) compared to when it is present in the environment as distracting information (task-irrelevant) is essential. Currently it is unclear when emotion most significantly modulates action control. This study seeks to compare how valence (positive versus negative emotion) impacts action control performance when valence is task-relevant and task-irrelevant by using two modified versions of the Simon conflict task.

The Simon task is a paradigm to …

Prompting As A New Medium: Greenbergian Medium Specificity And The Iterative Unpredictability Of Ai Art, Samantha Shapiro, James Hutson May 2026

Prompting As A New Medium: Greenbergian Medium Specificity And The Iterative Unpredictability Of Ai Art, Samantha Shapiro, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

This article argues that AI prompting should be understood not as a tool, technique, or accessory to image generation, but as a medium in its own right. Drawing on Clement Greenberg’s theory of medium specificity, it contends that a medium becomes legible through the operations peculiar to itself, namely, the constraints, affordances, and formal procedures that distinguish it from neighboring arts. Existing scholarship has asked whether prompting counts as art, whether prompt engineering constitutes a creative skill, and whether the prompt itself can be aesthetic; however, these accounts often stop short of a sustained theory of prompting as medium. This …
