A Quantitative Case Study Of Family Communication Patterns Theory And Parental Awareness Of Divine Rivals, Calista Coletti May 2026

A Quantitative Case Study Of Family Communication Patterns Theory And Parental Awareness Of Divine Rivals, Calista Coletti

Masters Theses

The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine how parents of different family communication pattern types are aware of the connect of the books their teens read. The problem is that parents have different awareness levels of the content of teens’ books or the books their teens read and it is unknown why they differ and what factors influence differences in awareness. This study focuses on the book Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross. The findings show that families with a high conversation orientation have parents who know more about the content in the books their teens read. The results …

War Stories: A Rhetorical Criticism Of How The War Stories In Extreme Ownership Are Used To Teach And Reinforce Leadership Principles., Landon Roseberry

Masters Theses

This rhetorical criticism examines how military combat narratives, or war stories, exhibit distinct narrative elements that communicate leadership principles. This study operationalizes Walter Fisher’s (1984; 1989) narrative paradigm for rhetorical criticism to examine how narrative rationality (narrative fidelity and narrative coherence) is created in four war stories from the New York Times bestselling book Extreme Ownership, written by Jocko Willink and Lief Babin. This study views the narrative elements and leadership values through the lens of Generation Y values and norms. This study found that war stories create an extreme setting in which narrative consequences are heightened, and leadership values …

Methyldopa: Chemistry, Structural Modifications, Pharmacological Activities, And Clinical Applications — A Comprehensive Review, Rania Kadhim, Emad Yousif, Suhad Ibrahim, Nany Hairunisa

Al-Nisour Journal for Medical Sciences

Methyldopa (α -methyldopa) is a centrally acting antihypertensive drug that has been extensively prescribed for the management of hypertension, particularly in pregnant women, due to its established safety profile and non-teratogenic nature. Beyond its clinical use, methyldopa has attracted increasing scientific interest because of its unique chemical structure, which contains multiple oxygen- and nitrogen-donor functional groups capable of undergoing structural modification and metal coordination. This comprehensive review highlights the chemical structure of methyldopa, its synthesis pathways, spectroscopic characteristics—particularly FTIR analysis—and its pharmacological mechanisms of action as an α 2-adrenergic receptor agonist. Special attention is given to methyldopa-induced adverse effects, …

The Impact Of Dispatch Weight Restrictions On Derivative Aircraft Propulsion Technology Evaluation, Timothy T. Takahashi May 2026

The Impact Of Dispatch Weight Restrictions On Derivative Aircraft Propulsion Technology Evaluation, Timothy T. Takahashi

Faculty Publications

This paper arises from an ARPA-E-sponsored project seeking design opportunities to retrofit existing aircraft with hybrid electric propulsion systems. Engineers typically configure aircraft to fly a given payload over a long range, which is subject to field performance constraints. In practice, operators fly transport aircraft (civilian and military) in a manner where dispatch consciously trades payload and/or range to enable safe operations to and from short runways. This work describes a simple yet novel analytical process suitable for inclusion in conceptual design or technology portfolio trade study evaluations to assess the impacts of weight-restricted dispatch upon usable payloads. We find …

Operational Responsibility In Ai Governance: A User-Centric Liability Framework, Zhengyang Chen May 2026

Operational Responsibility In Ai Governance: A User-Centric Liability Framework, Zhengyang Chen

Faculty Publications

Who bears responsibility when artificial intelligence systems cause harm? This question has become central to AI ethics and governance. Most existing approaches focus on developers, yet this faces serious practical and theoretical problems. Drawing on tort law, agency law, and philosophy of technology, this paper argues that AI should be understood as an instrument whose outputs remain the responsibility of human operators rather than developers. We call this 'user-centric governance.' Placing accountability with deployers promotes public trust by creating clear lines of responsibility, a concern that governance approaches have often overlooked. It preserves democratic accountability by keeping human actors answerable …

Digital Judgment: Towards A Bloackchain-Based Recognition System, Avaskhan Z. Asanaliyev May 2026

Digital Judgment: Towards A Bloackchain-Based Recognition System, Avaskhan Z. Asanaliyev

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Blockchain technology offers judicial systems a transformative opportunity to enhance the efficiency, security, and transparency of court judgments. This article explores how blockchain-based judgment records could streamline recognition and enforcement procedures. Current methods for authenticating and recognizing judgments depend on slow, manual certification processes and state-specific rules. These approaches create administrative delays, expose systems to fraud, and struggle to keep pace with a digital, global legal landscape. In contrast, a decentralized ledger secured by cryptographic verification would deliver near-instant, tamper- proof records. This could significantly expedite cross-jurisdictional enforcement while upholding due process and reliability. The article reviews recent advancements in …

Bilateral Pulmonary Emboli Requiring Emergent Thrombectomy In A Pediatric Patient, George C. Michalopoulos Md, Viktoriya Bikeyeva Md, Joseph Adams Do, Andrii Labchuk Md, Giovanni Paollela Md, Nishant Patel Md, Adib Chaus Md

Scientific Day

Introduction/Background:

Pediatric Pulmonary Emboli (PE) are rare but have a high mortality rate. Evidence based guidelines for PE management in children are limited, and most recommendations stem from adult populations. Decisions regarding pursuing systemic thrombolysis, surgical embolectomy, catheter-based interventions, or medical management are often made on a case-by-case basis by a multidisciplinary team after careful consideration of the risks and benefits. We present a case of a 17-year-old female who was successfully treated with mechanical thrombectomy for bilateral PE after recent initiation of oral contraceptives.

Description:

Patient presented to the ED with dyspnea. Vital signs showed tachycardia, hypoxia, and hypotension. …

Scientific Day

Introduction/Background:

Fever of unknown origin (FUO) is a common pediatric presentation with a broad infectious and noninfectious differential. Histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (HNL), also known as Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD), is a rare, self-limited condition characterized by prolonged fever and cervical lymphadenopathy. Diagnosis is often delayed due to nonspecific findings, with definitive confirmation requiring histopathologic evaluation. We describe a case of FUO and cervical lymphadenopathy ultimately diagnosed as HNL.

Description:

A 14-year-old female presented with one month of neck pain, tender cervical lymphadenopathy, and fevers. Initial outpatient treatment with amoxicillin-clavulanate did not result in improvement. Reevaluation demonstrated leukopenia and neutropenia, prompting hospital …

Congenital Extrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt As A Possible Cause Of Chronic Encephalopathy, Jared Muench Md, Luke Falesch Md, William Macdonald Md

Scientific Day

Introduction/Background:

Congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunt, also termed Abernethy malformation, refers to abnormal drainage of the portal circulation into a systemic vein (e.g., inferior vena cava). Abernethy malformation remains a rare entity, with only a few hundred cases reported in the literature. Among many associated congenital malformations and acquired complications of Abernethy malformation, chronic encephalopathy may also develop as portal venous blood bypasses the liver and certain metabolites, namely ammonia, escape filtration. Vascular abnormalities are not often considered in the evaluation of chronic encephalopathy. However, we present here the case of a 31-year-old patient found to have Abernethy malformation and discuss …

“We Are Physically Alive But Mentally Dead”: The International Community Must Take Action To Ensure Women’S Right To Education In Afghanistan, Solveig J. Clifford

BYU Law Review

International treaties recognize the right to education as a fundamental human right. The Taliban, which currently act as the government as Afghanistan, are legally bound by treaty obligations to respect the right to education. The Taliban have banned women and girls from receiving education past the sixth grade, which is illegal under international law. During the Taliban’s previous regime in Afghanistan, they implemented a similar policy, which had disastrous results for an entire generation of Afghan women. Once again, the education ban is causing severe harm to the women and girls of Afghanistan. The international community has failed to take …

Antidiscrimination, Not Anti-Dei: The Real Story Of The Supreme Court’S Recent Title Vii Precedent, Madeline Meth

BYU Law Review

For several years, my colleague and I had been litigating employment discrimination cases with facts that shocked our friends and family. For example, we fought Dallas County over a women-work-the-weekend policy that required women detention officers to work weekends while male colleagues took the weekends off. Likewise, we challenged the City of Cleveland when it moved our client, an emergency medical services supervisor, from the day shift to the night shift explicitly because he is Black. Then, in April 2024, in one of our client’s cases, Muldrow v. City of St. Louis, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously overruled the decades …

The Library Of Congress’S Essential Role In Digital Preservation: Reconceiving Mandatory Deposit After Valancourt, Dave Hansen

Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law

As the published record shifts to digital formats, the mechanisms that have ensured long-term preservation are breaking down. Most libraries acquire digital materials through licensing agreements that prohibit preservation copying, format migration, and interlibrary loan—contractually overriding the exceptions Congress enacted in the Copyright Act. The Library of Congress occupies a unique position: Through statutory deposit under 17 U.S.C. §§ 407 and 408, it collects copyrighted works pursuant to federal law rather than license agreements, and deposited copies become federal property under § 704, free from contractual restrictions. This Article examines how the Library’s deposit authority can be strengthened after the …
