School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a debilitating, inflammatory condition of apocrine sweat glands. Black patients are disproportionately affected, a finding largely attributed to lower socioeconomic status (SES) in the literature; yet, most HS studies include majority White cohorts. We present, to our knowledge, the first retrospective review of an entirely Black patient population living in low-income neighborhoods diagnosed with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) to identify potentially modifiable factors related to disease severity and outcomes. We reviewed charts of Black patients with an encounter for HS from 2010-2020 in the New Orleans University Medical Center database. Hurley stage III (HSt III) disease was …

Team Presentation Theory I: The Five Formats, Daniel Usera, Alex Fuller

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Team presentations are prevalent in education and business, yet there is a notable scarcity of scholarly research and discussion on effective delivery practices. The authors bridge this gap by introducing a theoretical foundation for team presentations, enabling further exploration. They first establish prerequisites that a team must address regarding the speech outline, member roles, and transition techniques. They then categorize five distinct team presentation formats and explore each one’s strategic advantages, disadvantages, and application contexts. Lastly, the authors offer strategic implications for practitioners and proposals for future academic inquiries into the realm of team presentation theory.

The Uneven Legal Geographies Of Nutrition Entitlement Programs In The United States. Realizing Or Hindering The Right To Food?, Joshua Lohnes, Mackenzie Steele

University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review

Unlike many countries across the world, the United States government does not formally recognize the Right to Food in law. However, it funds and administers nutrition entitlement programs that play a significant role in mitigating hunger and food insecurity across the country. Reflecting on the socio-political dynamics that shape the legal spaces of nutrition entitlement in different places, this Article explores the uneven geographies of the Right to Food in two other countries (South Africa and Ecuador) and then turns its focus to the United States. This Article offers an overview of the two most extensive nutrition entitlement programs (SNAP …

Prevent Phishy Business: Comparing California’S And The United Kingdom’S Age-Appropriate Design Code To Protect Youth From Cybersecurity Threats, Morgan Comite

University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review

Cybersecurity is the safeguarding of computer systems and networks against information disclosure, theft, or damage to users’ hardware, software, or electronic data, as well as disruption or misdirection of the services computers and networks provide. Knowing privacy would be breached due to the impact of COVID, in 2020, the United Kingdom got ahead of the game and passed rules/regulations requiring online services to protect children under the age of eighteen from scams, phishing, and security attacks. However, currently, the United States does not have a sufficient uniform privacy law governed to protect children under the age of eighteen from cybersecurity …

Protecting The Promise To The Families Of Tuskegee: Banning The Use Of Persuasive Ai In Obtaining Informed Consent For Commercial Drug Trials, Jennifer S. Bard

San Diego Law Review

This is the first article to call for a ban on the use of AI technology designed to influence human decision-making, “Persuasive AI,” for the purpose of recruiting or enrolling human participants in drug trials sponsored by commercial entities. It does so from a perspective of precaution, not fear. Advances in Artificial Technology that can assist human decision-making have tremendous potential for good. It makes the case for doing so based on both the substantial risk of harm to the decision-making process and the ineffectiveness of intermediate regulatory measures. This Article looks directly at Persuasive AI, a type of AI …

Integrating Renewable Energy With Building Management Systems: Pathways To Sustainable Infrastructure, Vibhu Sharma

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Graduate Student Publications

The adoption and integration of renewable energy sources with building management systems (BMS) present a pivotal strategy in addressing the growing concerns related to energy use in the built environment. As urbanization intensifies and the demand for energy increases, buildings emerge as critical nodes of consumption, accounting for approximately 40% of global energy usage. The imperative for sustainability calls for a shift from conventional energy practices toward systems that prioritize renewable sources, such as solar, wind, and geothermal power. These technologies, when synergized with BMS, hold the potential to revolutionize buildings from passive energy consumers to active, efficient agents of …

Examining Associations Between Social And Emotional Loneliness And Drinking In A Clinical Sample With Alcohol Use Disorder (Aud): An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study, Brendan E. Walsh

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Loneliness, a negative affective state that arises when someone perceives a lack of social connectedness, is a predisposing and maintaining factor of alcohol use behavior. Several studies have linked loneliness to drinking at the daily level and elevated AUD risk using longitudinal designs; however, cross-sectional studies have identified inconsistent patterns. The current study applied a multidimensional framework of loneliness (i.e., emotional and social dimensions) to examine daily relations between loneliness and drinking in an AUD sample (N = 60), with consideration of drinking context (social vs. solitary) as a moderator. Results indicated that emotional loneliness (within-person) was associated with increased …

Lifespace Patterns Of College Students High And Low In Personal Intelligence, John D. Mayer Jan 2024

Lifespace Patterns Of College Students High And Low In Personal Intelligence, John D. Mayer

UNH Personality Lab

Personal intelligence (PI) refers to the capacity to accurately reason about personality in oneself and other people. We hypothesize that people who are higher in personal intelligence differ from others in their relationships and behaviors. We conducted a series of theoretically-guided studies to examine how PI is associated with a person’s self-reported activities, interactions, situations, and group memberships: their lifespace. In two archival and three new studies of college students (Ns = 385, 358, 1186, 416, 696, respectively) we first identified 15 short, factor-based scales describing aspects of college students’ lifespace that are potentially relevant to personal intelligence. …

All Decisions

Tenant brought a non-payment proceeding challenging the regulatory status of the apartment, alleging it was part of a horizontal multiple dwelling and therefore rent-stabilized. Landlord claimed it was a four-family house and not subject to rent stabilization. Court granted tenant's motion for discovery to allow inspection of the buildings to gather evidence about shared facilities, but denied requests for copies of leases and a deposition of landlord. Key Legal Points: Court found inspection necessary to determine if buildings shared enough common facilities to be considered a horizontal multiple dwelling.

The European badger, Meles meles, is an important wildlife host for Mycobacterium bovis and contributes to the epidemiology of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in cattle in several countries. The control of zoonotic diseases, such as bTB, is a central component of global One-Health strategies. Such strategies are complicated by human–wildlife conflicts, particularly where wildlife reservoirs are legally protected. The contrasting objectives of disease management and wildlife conservation, therefore, can require significant investment in research to support evidence-based policies. In Britain and Ireland, for example, badgers are a legally protected species but are also subject to lethal control and vaccination for …

The trade-off between robustness and tunability is a central challenge in the pursuit of quantum simulation and fault-tolerant quantum computation. In particular, quantum architectures are often designed to achieve high coherence at the expense of tunability. Many current qubit designs have fixed energy levels and consequently limited types of controllable interactions. Here by adiabatically transforming fixed-frequency superconducting circuits into modifiable Floquet qubits, we demonstrate an XXZ Heisenberg interaction with fully adjustable anisotropy. This interaction model can act as the primitive for an expressive set of quantum operations, but is also the basis for quantum simulations of spin systems. To illustrate …

Global And Local Magnitude And Spatial Pattern Of Uncertainty From Geographically Adaptive Empirical And Machine Learning Satellite-Derived Bathymetry Models, Kim Lowell, Yuri Rzhanov

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The spatial structure of local uncertainty of shallow-water satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) relative to model type, imagery, and geographical adaptability was examined for an area near Key West, Florida (United States). The model types examined were a commonly used quasi-empirical linear regression model and a decision tree-based Categorical Boosting (CatBoost) machine learning (ML) model. Image types examined were (four) cloud-free Sentinel-2 images and a maximum blue band (Band 2) value image composite of the four Sentinel-2 images. Initial models fitted were based on band reflectances alone. Geographical adaptivity was added by including UTM coordinates and refitting the models. Major findings were: …

Approximately one-third of endocrine-treated women with estrogen receptor-alpha positive (ER+) breast cancers (BC) are at risk of recurrence due to intrinsic or acquired resistance. Thus, it is vital to understand the mechanisms underlying endocrine therapy resistance in ER+ BC to improve patient treatment. Mitochondrial fatty acid β-oxidation (FAO) has been shown to be a major metabolic pathway in triple-negative BC (TNBC) that can activate Src signaling. Here, we found metabolic reprogramming that increases FAO in ER+ BC as a mechanism of resistance to endocrine therapy. A metabolically relevant, integrated gene signature was derived from transcriptomic, metabolomic, and lipidomic analyses in …

Expanded T Lymphocytes In The Cerebrospinal Fluid Of Multiple Sclerosis Patients Are Specific For Epstein-Barr-Virus-Infected B Cells

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection has long been associated with multiple sclerosis (MS), but the role of EBV in the pathogenesis of MS is not clear. Our hypothesis is that a major fraction of the expanded clones of T lymphocytes in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are specific for autologous EBV-infected B cells. We obtained blood and CSF samples from eight relapsing-remitting patients in the process of diagnosis. We stimulated cells from the blood with autologous EBV-infected lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCL), EBV, varicella zoster virus, influenza, and candida and sorted the responding cells with flow cytometry after 6 d. We sequenced the …
