Numerical Study On Effect Of Heterogenicity On Micro⁃Cracking Behavior Of Cement⁃Stabilized Macadam Material, Dong Qiao, Yuan Jiawei, Zhao Xiaokang, Chen Xueqin
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
To investigate the effect of heterogeneity of cement mortar on the micro-cracking behavior of cement-stabilized macadam (CSM) material, this paper built a circular aggregate micro-fracture model based on the finite element method (FEM). Meanwhile, the micro-cracking behavior of the material was simulated by embedding a zero-thickness cohesive element with a bilinear cohesive zone model, and the material random field with Weibull distribution was introduced to characterize the heterogeneity characteristics of the mortar matrix and interface transition zone (ITZ). Based on virtual semicircular bending (SCB) tests, this paper simulated the micro-cracking process and analyzed the influence of material homogeneity on the …

The pile-supported embankment is widely used for subgrade settlement control in soft soil areas. Analyzing the soil arch effect of the embankment is the key to obtaining its bearing and deformation characteristics. Physical model tests of the soil arch effect and three-dimensional elastoplastic finite element numerical simulation of pile-supported embankment were carried out to study the soil arch formation process and bearing characteristics in embankment under the condition of differential settlement of pile and soil. The results show that with the increase in the differential settlement of pile and soil, the stress distribution in the embankment changes constantly, and the …

Effects Of Organic Surface Contamination On The Mass Accommodation Coefficient Of Water: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Jordan Hartfield, Eric Bird, Zhi Liang
Effects Of Organic Surface Contamination On The Mass Accommodation Coefficient Of Water: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Jordan Hartfield, Eric Bird, Zhi Liang
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The mass accommodation coefficient (MAC), a parameter that quantifies the possibility of a phase change to occur at a liquid-vapor interface, can strongly affect the evaporation and condensation rates at a liquid surface. Due to the various challenges in experimental determination of the MAC, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been widely used to study the MAC on liquid surfaces with no impurities or contaminations. However, experimental studies show that airborne hydrocarbons from various sources can adsorb on liquid surfaces and alter the liquid surface properties. In this work, therefore, we study the effects of organic surface contamination, which is immiscible …

Mo-Doped Titanate Nanofibers From Hydrothermal Syntheses For Improving Bone Scaffold, Yang Tian
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A longstanding interest in bone tissue engineering is the development of new bio- scaffolds that can be manufactured on a large scale with high throughput at low cost. Here, we report a low-cost and systematically optimized hydrothermal synthesis for producing Mo- doped potassium titanate nanofibers with high structural purity. This new nanosynthesis is based on bone tissue growth on an undoped titanate nanowires-entangled scaffold, as previously reported by our team. The morphological and structural characterization data suggest that the crystal structure of Mo-doped titanate nanofibers closely resembles that of the undoped ones. This resemblance is potentially valuable for assessing the …

Alexander And The Roman Emperors, Sulochana Asirvatham
Department of Classics and General Humanities Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The Alexander most visible to us today is one who was created and recreated in the Roman period. While Alexander's presence in literature is strong enough that we can reasonably describe the trajectory of intellectual interest in Alexander during the Roman period, more difficult to pin down is the degree to which powerful Romans engaged in conscious imitatio or aemulatio Alexandri, which generally involves squaring literary hints with material evidence that does not always speak to us as directly as we would like it to. Without dismissing the world of ways in which various aspects of Alexander-myth may have been …

Making The Connection: How Membrane Contact Sites Have Changed Our View Of Organelle Biology, G. Voeltz, E. Sawyer, G. Hajnóczky, W. Prinz
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
The view of organelles and how they operate together has changed dramatically over the last two decades. The textbook view of organelles was that they operated largely independently and were connected by vesicular trafficking and the diffusion of signals through the cytoplasm. We now know that all organelles make functional close contacts with one another, often called membrane contact sites. The study of these sites has moved to center stage in cell biology as it has become clear that they play critical roles in healthy and developing cells and during cell stress and disease states. Contact sites have important roles …

Epilepsy is a prevalent disorder involving neuronal network hyperexcitability, yet existing therapeutic strategies often fail to provide optimal patient outcomes. Chemogenetic approaches, where exogenous receptors are expressed in defined brain areas and specifically activated by selective agonists, are appealing methods to constrain overactive neuronal activity. We developed BARNI (Bradanicline- and Acetylcholine-activated Receptor for Neuronal Inhibition), an engineered channel comprised of the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor ligand-binding domain coupled to an α1 glycine receptor anion pore domain. Here we demonstrate that BARNI activation by the clinical stage α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor-selective agonist bradanicline effectively suppressed targeted neuronal activity, and controlled both …
Obesity And Skeletal Fragility
Obesity And Skeletal Fragility
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Skeletal fracture has recently emerged as a complication of obesity. Given the normal or better than normal bone mineral density (BMD), the skeletal fragility of these patients appears to be a problem of bone quality rather than quantity. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the incidence of which increases with increasing body mass index, is also associated with an increased risk for fractures despite a normal or high BMD. With the additional bone pathology from diabetes itself, patients with both obesity and T2DM could have a worse skeletal profile. Clinically, however, there are no available methods for identifying those who are …

Food insecurity is a known health equity threat for formerly chronically homeless populations even after they transition into permanent housing. This project utilized a human-centered design methodology to plan and implement a nutrition-focused community-health-worker (CHW) intervention in permanent supportive housing (PSH). The project aimed to increase access to healthy foods, improve nutritional literacy, healthy cooking/eating practices, and build community/social connectedness among 140 PSH residents. Validated food-security screening conducted by CHWs identified low or very low food security among 64% of 83 residents who completed the baseline survey, which is similar to rates found in a previous study among formerly homeless …

Revealing Chronic Disease Progression Patterns Using Gaussian Process For Stage Inference, Hongyu Wang, Xiaobo Zhou
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
OBJECTIVE: The early stages of chronic disease typically progress slowly, so symptoms are usually only noticed until the disease is advanced. Slow progression and heterogeneous manifestations make it challenging to model the transition from normal to disease status. As patient conditions are only observed at discrete timestamps with varying intervals, an incomplete understanding of disease progression and heterogeneity affects clinical practice and drug development.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed the Gaussian Process for Stage Inference (GPSI) approach to uncover chronic disease progression patterns and assess the dynamic contribution of clinical features. We tested the ability of the GPSI to reliably …

A wide range of critical infrastructures are connected via wide area networks as well as the Internet-of-Thing (IoT). Apart from natural disasters, these infrastructures, providing services such as electricity, water, gas, and Internet, are vulnerable to terrorist attacks. Clearly, damages to these infrastructures can have dire consequences on economics, health services, security and safety, and various business sectors. An infrastructure network can be represented as a directed graph in which nodes and edges denote operation entities and dependencies between entities, respectively. A knowledgeable attacker who plans to harm the system would aim to use the minimum amount of effort, cost, …

Understanding The New Stress Factors Affecting Teachers' Burnout: A Scoping Review, Joby Thomas, Marc Eric S. Reyes
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
The teaching profession is extremely vulnerable to burnout. The sudden outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic posed new threats and changed the educational environment, the perceptions and the values of teachers. The traditional in-person learning approach was quickly replaced by distant online learning to continue education. As schools reopened, a new educational platform, the hybrid learning model, evolved by fusing the two learning models. The high expectations placed on teachers to swiftly adopt new teaching methods—often without the required resources or training—exacerbated their exhaustion. We conducted a scoping review to determine the new stress factors that cause teachers’ burnout, following the …

Carbon Cycle–Climate Feedbacks In The Post-Paris World, David S. Schimel, Dustin Carroll
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The Paris Agreement calls for emissions reductions to limit climate change, but how will the carbon cycle change if it is successful? The land and oceans currently absorb roughly half of anthropogenic emissions, but this fraction will decline in the future. The amount of carbon that can be released before climate is mitigated depends on the amount of carbon the ocean and terrestrial ecosystems can absorb. Policy is based on model projections, but observations and theory suggest that climate effects emerging in today’s climate will increase and carbon cycle tipping points may be crossed. Warming temperatures, drought, and a slowing …

Low lattice thermal conductivity (κl) is a crucial factor for higher figure-of merit and hence the efficiency of thermoelectric generators. There are several reports on intrinsically low κl values in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials using density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations. In general, phonon dispersions are studied at absolute zero temperature using the finite-displacement approach within harmonic approximations. In addition, the κl is calculated using the third-order cubic interatomic force constants (IFCs) by solving the Boltzmann transport equation for phonons. In these calculations, we use quartic IFCs to solve self-consistent phonon equations …
