The School To Prison Pipeline From The Inside Out: Survivor Narraitves, Nina M. Koufalias
The School To Prison Pipeline From The Inside Out: Survivor Narraitves, Nina M. Koufalias
Dissertations
This dissertation examines the lived experiences of two Latino men who traversed the school-to-prison pipeline in the 1980s. The purpose of this study is to investigate how intersecting systems of racism, ableism, poverty, and exclusionary school practices shaped their educational trajectories and contributed to their incarceration. Three overarching research questions guide this inquiry: (1) What can be learned from the stories of two formerly incarcerated relatives that sheds light on how the school-to-prison pipeline is lived? (2) How do their narratives illustrate the impacts of exclusionary discipline policies, such as zero-tolerance, on educational opportunities and life outcomes? (3) How does …

Fractional Bernstein Polynomial Approximations For Nonlinear Timefractional Partial Differential Equations, Reem Abdul Quzli
Fractional Bernstein Polynomial Approximations For Nonlinear Timefractional Partial Differential Equations, Reem Abdul Quzli
Theses
This thesis studies the numerical approximation of nonlinear time-fractional partial differential equations using fractional Bernstein polynomials. The main model considered is the nonlinear time-fractional foam drainage equation, in which the classical time derivative is replaced by the Caputo fractional derivative. This formulation introduces memory effects into the model and allows the present drainage behavior to depend on the previous evolution of the liquid fraction.
The proposed method approximates the solution by a finite expansion of fractional Bernstein basis functions. After substituting this approximation into the governing equation, the residual is expanded in powers of t . The unknown coefficient …

Gis-Based Solar Energy Suitability Assessment For Utility-Scale Photovoltaic Development In Texas, Deepak Kumar
Masters Theses
This research developed a GIS-based multi-criteria suitability model to identify sites in Texas favorable for utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) development. The model integrated three biophysical variables—Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI), terrain slope, and land cover—within a weighted overlay framework using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for criteria weighting. GHI data were derived from the ERA5-Land Daily Aggregated dataset (ECMWF, 2024), slope was calculated from the USGS 3DEP 10-meter Digital Elevation Model, and land cover was classified from the National Land Cover Database 2021 (USGS). Each variable was reclassified to a 0–4 suitability scale and combined using AHP-derived weights of 0.50 (GHI), …
Understanding The Effect Of Scaling On Aerodynamic Force Analysis Of The Nrel Phase Vi Wind Turbine, Patrick R. West
Understanding The Effect Of Scaling On Aerodynamic Force Analysis Of The Nrel Phase Vi Wind Turbine, Patrick R. West
Masters Theses
It is challenging for small models and prototypes to accurately reflect the aerodynamic performance of a full-scale wind turbine, especially for offshore turbines. It is also not economical to build full-scale models for prototype testing. Scaling makes it possible to modify the dimensions for computational simulations, simplify the prototype construction and testing process, and make aerodynamic load analysis applicable to larger blade diameters. In this work, a model is presented that considers the effects of geometric scaling by modifying the incoming windspeeds and rotational speed of the turbine rotor in capturing aerodynamic load through Computational Fluid Dynamics. The National Renewable …

High-Density Power Conversion: Analyzing High-Frequency Transformer Scaling Laws And Grid-Filter Efficacy In Integrated Charger Inverters, Thilina Lakshan Dissanayakage
Masters Theses
This thesis investigates frequency scaling in high-frequency transformer (HFT) used in Dual Active Bridge (DAB) converters and evaluates different LCL filter design methodologies for grid-connected applications. The study explores the impact of operating frequency on transformer size reduction, efficiency, and overall performance by analyzing HFT designs at 50 kHz, 100 kHz, and 400 kHz. It is expected that increasing the switching frequency enables significant reduction in transformer volume, while introducing trade-offs in efficiency due to increased core and copper losses. In parallel, the thesis examines and compares three LCL filter design approaches under identical operating conditions using a 1 kW …

Corneal innervation research has faced long-standing clinical challenges that only recent technological breakthroughs now make tractable. Advances in single-cell analysis, viral vectors, clinical imaging, and artificial intelligence provide integrated approaches for uncovering molecular mechanisms underlying functional outcomes and facilitating clinical applications. The National Eye Institute's U01-funded consortium on ocular surface innervation addresses major knowledge gaps in characterizing corneal-projecting neurons, understanding neuroimmune and epithelial interactions in the cornea, and translating animal model findings to human pathology. The unique properties of the cornea (transparent, avascular, and densely innervated) make it ideal for neurobiology research on peripheral and central sensory processing. Through a …

Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminant potential (CHIP) is an age-related phenomenon associated with increased risk of hematologic malignancy. Preclinical studies have shown that infection is a driver of CHIP; clinical studies in people living with HIV suggest a relationship between chronic infection and CHIP, but the association between infection frequency and incident CHIP in the general population remains unknown. We leveraged the atherosclerosis risk in communities study to design a closed prospective cohort study. CHIP was determined based on whole-exome sequencing at 2 time points 20 years apart. Included were 3,367 individuals without cancer or CHIP at time 1 and without …

Translational equity means ensuring that diagnostics, treatments, care models, and prevention strategies are developed and implemented so they work for populations with the greatest burden and least access to care. In Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), where most evidence derives from highly educated, non-Hispanic White participants at large academic centers, translational equity is critical to prevent misclassification, limited access, and widening disparities and to ensure that underrepresented communities shape how new knowledge moves into practice. Hispanic and other populations in the United States are disproportionately affected by ADRD yet remain underrepresented in research, with gaps especially pronounced in high-poverty …

Anterior cutaneous nerve entrapment syndrome (ACNES) is an underdiagnosed cause of abdominal pain. We report the first documented ACNES case following subcutaneous administration of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist. A 44-year-old man developed focal, neuropathic abdominal pain coinciding with initiation of tirzepatide injections. Clinical examination confirmed ACNES diagnosis, and pain improved after relocating injections away from the abdomen and initiating multimodal pharmacotherapy. This case emphasizes the need to consider ACNES in patients endorsing focal abdominal pain with concurrent use of glucagon-like peptide-1 therapy and highlights injection site modification as a simple, effective management strategy while exercising self-restraint with respect to workup.

Treatment Of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Via Mental Health Technology, Erika S Trent, Nisha Jagannathan, Eric A Storch
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating neuropsychiatric disorder that remains chronic unless intervened with evidence-based intervention. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with exposure and response prevention is the gold-standard psychological intervention for OCD, but many individuals do not receive this intervention due to barriers to accessing treatment. Mental health technology tools such as telehealth, computerized programs, internet-delivered CBT, and mobile applications have been adopted to expand the accessibility of CBT. An up-to-date summary of the evidence base of technology-mediated formats of CBT for OCD treatment is provided. Clinical benefits offered by such approaches, current limitations, and future research directions are discussed.

Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) is a rare congenital abnormality of the posterior fossa and the cerebellum and has an incidence of 1 in 10 000 to 30 000 births. Although DWM can present in isolation, it is often associated with other central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities or extra-CNS anomalies (DWM+). A molecular cause is not identified in the majority of individuals with DWM+. This is due, in part, to uncertainty regarding optimal testing strategies and an incomplete understanding of the genetic causes of DWM+. In this study, we analyzed clinical exome sequencing (cES) data from 91 individuals with DWM+ to determine …

Introduction: People living with a neurological condition face many difficulties in daily life, impacting their function and quality of life (QoL). There is currently no cure to many neurological conditions, therefore identifying interventions to improve QoL is of high importance. COVID-19 changed society in many ways and understanding the research priorities from the neurological community post pandemic is urgently needed to ensure resources are used efficiently and aligned with the needs and priorities of the community. To better understand the priority areas, it is essential for individuals with lived experience to have input into priority areas for research. Therefore, the …

Wafer and FPGA testing remains costly in semiconductor manufacturing. This paper studies random sampling, stratified sampling, and k-means sampling under a partial-measurement setting with Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), and introduces Short Distance Elimination (SDE), a spatial screening rule that spreads selected training points over the layout. Combining value-based sampling with SDE yields two hybrid methods: S-SDE, which applies SDE within stratified subsets, and K-SDE, which applies SDE within k-means clusters. A calibration-based protocol fixes the value-group labels and SDE thresholds before target-file prediction. The SDE thresholds are selected from (Formula presented.) configurations in (Formula presented.), excluding (Formula presented.), using local …

Intrinsic capacity (IC) is defined as the composite of physical and mental abilities an individual possesses, encompassing 5 domains: cognition, psychological health, sensory function, vitality, and locomotion. This construct is central to the World Health Organization’s framework for assessing functional ability in older adults. Growing evidence highlights the critical role of the musculoskeletal system in maintaining these domains, while conditions such as sarcopenia, osteoporosis, and their coexistence as osteosarcopenia (OS) are increasingly associated with IC decline. This narrative review compiles current evidence on the modulatory role of muscles and bones in IC and the impacts of sarcopenia, osteoporosis, and OS. …
