Building Community At An Academic Library With Bilingual Story Trails, Laura Bright, Janice S. Lewis Jun 2026

Building Community At An Academic Library With Bilingual Story Trails, Laura Bright, Janice S. Lewis

The Southeastern Librarian

A story trail is an activity that combines exercise and literacy as visitors read sequentially displayed book pages while walking. Story trails are often set up outdoors along existing paths and feature rotating selections of children’s picture books. Many story trails are set up and maintained by community groups, public libraries, or schools. Academic libraries can use story trails as opportunities to promote literacy, foster a sense of local community, support families, and encourage healthy habits. The authors of this article use City of Greenville (North Carolina) StoryWalks® created by staff at East Carolina University’s Joyner Library as an example …

The notion that computers equipped with software and artificial intelligence (AI) applications can effectively replace human intelligence is under the existing paradigm of operations. This is the leading facilitator of task automation on board a ship to fulfill various jobs and is often supported by numerous scientists/academics who contribute to gaining today’s momentum in public opinion. The discourse of Industry 4.0 in the maritime domain, however, tends to focus heavily on technological contexts and overlooks socio-economic contexts. This gap is evident in the strong emphasis on technical and digital skills for future maritime professionals. This paper, therefore, argues that the …

Residential Ai Data Centers: Security, Privacy, And Governance Concerns, Alan Saquella Jun 2026

Residential Ai Data Centers: Security, Privacy, And Governance Concerns, Alan Saquella

Publications

The concept of placing mini data centers and distributed AI computer nodes inside residential homes may appear innovative from an energy efficiency perspective, but it introduces significant security, privacy, governance, and liability concerns. What is effectively occurring is the expansion of commercial and potentially critical infrastructure into lightly protected residential environments.

Once a residence becomes part of a distributed computer grid supporting hyper-scalers, AI providers, or enterprise workloads, the home is no longer simply a private residence. It becomes a commercial technology asset, a potential cyber target, and even a physical target. A distributed network of thousands of residential nodes …

Dual Language Immersion In Utah Schools: Examining Experiences And Access To Improve Sustainability, Melissa Catherine Jensen Kimball Jun 2026

Dual Language Immersion In Utah Schools: Examining Experiences And Access To Improve Sustainability, Melissa Catherine Jensen Kimball

Theses and Dissertations

Dual language immersion (DLI) programs can impact students in many ways. Multiple researchers have studied the effects of these programs and have found numerous benefits. However, there is little published information on the actual experiences of individuals in schools with a DLI program, including those who are involved in the program and those who were a part of DLI school communities but not directly involved in the program. A. Hawks, J. Rowley, D. Stovall, and their respective thesis and dissertation committees created a survey to better understand the current perspectives of administrators, parents, teachers, and other school staff on these …

Defining The Dynamic Role Of Belongingness In Alcohol Use Disorder Treatment, Brendan E. Walsh Jun 2026

Defining The Dynamic Role Of Belongingness In Alcohol Use Disorder Treatment, Brendan E. Walsh

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Drinking is intertwined with social processes, including social support and group belongingness. Although drinking can transiently enhance social functioning, escalating to heavy use can be detrimental to it. It is well-known that excessive drinking and social dysfunction exacerbate each other over time, and it follows that social support and belonging are key mechanisms of addiction recovery. Yet, less is known about how changes in belongingness throughout treatment dynamically affect drinking outcomes, and even less is known about how drinking outcomes and other social processes (e.g., therapeutic alliance, interpersonal drinking consequences) dynamically influence belongingness. The current project (N = 210) studied …

Carbon Accounting And Beyond: An Evidence-Based Life Cycle Assessment Of The Environmental Impacts Of Data Center It Equipment, Meghann Smith, Manveer Mann, Pankaj Lal

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Data centers are essential to modern infrastructure, but are significant contributors to greenhouse gas (GHG) and related environmental challenges. Despite energy efficiency improvements, rising electricity demands driven by technologies like AI pose challenges to sustaining low-emission sector growth. Regulatory requirements mandate data center operators to report electricity use and emissions, yet current methods, particularly pertaining to indirect sources, remain insufficient. This study explores how life cycle assessment (LCA)-based estimates of data center IT equipment impacts compared with commonly used corporate GHG accounting methods: average-data and spend-based. Environmental impacts were modeled at both grouped and granular levels to support enterprise-wide reporting …

A Comprehensive Survey Of Artificial Intelligence Applications In Predicting Mining-Induced Subsidence, Deformation, And Landslides: Strengths, Limitations, And Future Trends, Long Quoc Nguyen, Dung Ba Nguyen, Minh Tuyet Dang

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Mining activities often cause mining-induced ground deformation, including subsidence and landslides, and related geo-environmental impacts, posing significant risks to infrastructure and safety. This study conducts a systematic assessment to identify, categorize, and evaluate AI-based methods (machine learning, deep learning, and hybrid models) for predicting and monitoring mining-induced ground deformation. The literature search was performed across major scientific databases, using predefined keywords and selection criteria, resulting in a final dataset of relevant peer-reviewed studies. The reviewed works were classified into three methodological groups: traditional machine learning, deep learning-based approaches, and hybrid methods. The results show that ML still dominates in terms …

You Must Be This Tall To Scroll: California's Questionable Approach To Parenting By Policy, Caroline M. Cuddy Jun 2026

You Must Be This Tall To Scroll: California's Questionable Approach To Parenting By Policy, Caroline M. Cuddy

Pace Law Review

This note examines California's Protecting Our Kids from Social Media Addiction Act (SB 976), signed into law in September 2024, which prohibits personalized algorithmic feeds on minors' accounts without pa- rental consent and restricts platform notifications during school hours and nighttime. Drawing on the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association and related federal litigation, this note argues that SB 976 is unconstitutional under the First Amendment. Specifically, SB 976 is underinclusive because it fails to meaning- fully reduce minors' screen time, exempts comparable addictive plat- forms, and permits the very algorithmic feeds it deems harmful upon parental …

On The Fractional Laplacian Type Operator, Maysam Abdulnaser Zain Jun 2026

On The Fractional Laplacian Type Operator, Maysam Abdulnaser Zain

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

In this thesis, we study analytical structures arising from Dunkl theory and their applications to harmonic analysis and fractional Laplacian operators. Dunkl operators are differential-difference operators associated with finite reflection groups, providing a natural generalization of the classical Fourier analysis through the introduction of root systems and multiplicity functions. Within this framework, several classical transforms appear as special cases of the (k,a)-generalized Fourier transform. We study the generalized Fourier transform, its kernel, and the associated translation operator and convolution structures. Using these tools, we construct the corresponding heat kernel and analyze the associated heat semigroup. Our main contribution concerns the …

Structure-Property Relationship In Low-Dimensional Cesium Metal Halides: Coordination Chemistry, Luminescent Mechanism And Optoelectronics Applications, Sheikh Jobe Jun 2026

Structure-Property Relationship In Low-Dimensional Cesium Metal Halides: Coordination Chemistry, Luminescent Mechanism And Optoelectronics Applications, Sheikh Jobe

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

Low-dimensional metal halides are gaining popularity in optoelectronic applications owing to their interesting optical properties and structural diversity. In general, low-dimensional metal halides refer to one-dimensional and zero-dimensional structures. The main difference between the two is that one-dimensional structures have chain-like connectivity, whereas zero-dimensional structures consist of isolated units. Their optical properties are mainly determined by the B-site metal ion, which is coordinated to halide ions in trigonal, tetrahedral, or octahedral geometry. In particular, copper (I) and manganese (II) metal halides are emerging as novel materials for solid-state lighting, and anti-counterfeiting applications. The two well-known phases of cesium copper (I) …

The Plight Of “Unreasonable” Trafficking Victims: A Critical Assessment Of The Trafficking Victims Protection Act’S “Reasonable Person” Standard For Coercion In Policy-Oriented Perspective, Christian L. Gonzalez Rivera Jun 2026

The Plight Of “Unreasonable” Trafficking Victims: A Critical Assessment Of The Trafficking Victims Protection Act’S “Reasonable Person” Standard For Coercion In Policy-Oriented Perspective, Christian L. Gonzalez Rivera

Social Justice & Equity Law Journal (Willamette University College of Law)

Since the enactment of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 and its requirement that, in alleging trafficking by means of coercion, victims and prosecutors make a showing that the victim was coerced under a reasonable person standard, an entire class of victims effectively became disenfranchised and no longer deemed victims. The inability to meet such a high burden of proof produces not only the lack of successful criminal and civil prosecutions, but also – and most alarmingly – precludes many a victim’s participation in basic and highly needed government services, required both to cope with and recover from the …

Reclaiming Morality: Marxism, Ideology, And The Ethics Of Emancipation, Karli Calo Jun 2026

Reclaiming Morality: Marxism, Ideology, And The Ethics Of Emancipation, Karli Calo

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper examines whether morality in Marxist theory is inescapably ideological—merely an expression of bourgeois class interests—or whether it can serve as a material force for liberation. I argue that although Marx lacks explicit moral theorizing, his critique of capitalism nonetheless relies on a coherent implicit moral framework. This framework can be identified through Marx’s analyses of alienation, exploitation, and class domination, each of which presupposes normative commitments to human dignity, social agency, and collective self-determination. Marx’s critique of bourgeois morality therefore does not entail the rejection of ethics; rather, it reveals the possibility of a historically grounded, emancipatory moral …

Between The Canvas And The Colonizer: The Black Female Figure And French Orientalist Paintings, Sophia Hounton Jun 2026

Between The Canvas And The Colonizer: The Black Female Figure And French Orientalist Paintings, Sophia Hounton

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

Black women in French Orientalist paintings have been portrayed as hypersexual, subservient, and used as props to highlight the presence of their white and Arab counterparts. These depictions of Black women represent early discriminatory ideas about Black Africans that emerged in the same era through racial science. Though partially deconstructed today, these early conceptions of Black women continue to be reinforced and impact modern perceptions of Black women in French society. There is notably much less research dedicated to the historical role of the image of Black women in France compared to research on Black men and Arab women. This …

The Child Figure In Climate Fiction: Redefining Community And Culture In The Face Of Climate Change, Allison Wasley Jun 2026

The Child Figure In Climate Fiction: Redefining Community And Culture In The Face Of Climate Change, Allison Wasley

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

While climate change has been a known phenomenon for decades, social and cultural factors have stagnated our collective ability not only to discuss ongoing climate disasters, but also to conceptualize the disintegration of the very relationship between humanity and the natural world. This essay builds upon existing research and theory, proposing that climate fiction could serve as an antidote to our “cultural derangement,” which simultaneously destroys the relationship between humanity and nature, and our relationship with one another. This essay analyzes several examples of climate fiction that leverage the figure of the child as a symbol of hope and a …

Queer (Re)Formations Of Mexican Identity: Modernity & Visibility As Seen In El Vampiro De La Colonia Roma, Y Tu Mamá También, And Sueño En Otro Idioma, Mar Bradley

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

Starting with the infamous Ball of the 41, the perception of Mexican male queerness has been strongly affected by its visibility. The Ball of the 41 attracted massive attention from the press; popular engraver José Guadalupe Posada completed two prints on the ball, mocking the attendees. For the first time in modern Mexico, queerness was represented in widespread public media, as knowledge of the scandal disseminated throughout the country by articles and images printed in newspapers. A politics of visibility is central to understanding the representational shifts of queer people, particularly by studying how queer people represent or are represented …
