The primary objectives were to characterize the physiochemical properties of foams formed using various concentrations of Tween 20 (T20) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) with and without the addition of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and peracetic acid (PAA), compare the efficacy of foam and traditional dump tank (DT) …

Estranged Temporality: How Time Tells Stories In Science Fiction, Phillip H. Howells Jul 2024

Estranged Temporality: How Time Tells Stories In Science Fiction, Phillip H. Howells

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

According to Darko Suvin in his influential critical treatise, Metamorphoses of Science Fiction, estrangement in Science Fiction (SF) gives authors the ability to build worlds related to but distant from our own using specific metaphors. This dissertation takes up this term and applies it to the fulcrum of time in SF as a method of creating possible futures and imaginative pasts in order to illuminate the realities of the present. The realities of the present are congruent with the material circumstances of the past, and this can be seen in the kinds of SF worlds built by members of …

Spatial Ecology Of Mountain Lions Throughout Their Distribution In California, Kyle D. Dougherty

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Mountain lions (Puma concolor) have been studied extensively throughout their wide geographic distribution in the Western Hemisphere, but most research has been conducted at relatively small spatial scales. We used GPS telemetry data contributed by researchers in 16 study areas throughout California to advance understanding of mountain lion spatial ecology. First, we investigated multi-scale resource selection of mountain lions relative to spatially varying risk of intentional human-caused mortality associated with livestock depredation management. We show that individuals that proactively avoided mortality risk when selecting home ranges were able to relax their avoidance of risk when making resource selection …

Hybridization Between The Rare Gray-Headed Chickadee And The Abundant Boreal Chickadee In The Midst Of Shifting Climate, Matthew R. Armstrong Jul 2024

Hybridization Between The Rare Gray-Headed Chickadee And The Abundant Boreal Chickadee In The Midst Of Shifting Climate, Matthew R. Armstrong

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

As species respond to changing climate, distributions and abundances may shift and alter species interactions. Hybridization, a relatively widespread phenomenon becoming more common with climate change, can have beneficial and detrimental effects on population growth rates and genetic integrity. Beneficial effects due to the introduction of advantageous alleles and increased genetic diversity may result from hybridization. Species may also accrue fitness costs associated with changing climates if mismatches occur between environmental variables and phenotypes. The gray-headed chickadee, Poecile cinctus lathami, is an extremely rare songbird that has experienced marked declines in recent decades within its restricted distribution in Alaska …

Phylogeny And Disparity Of Ammonoid Family Acanthoceratidae Over Ocean Anoxic Event 2, Lindsey Howard

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The widespread use of genera as proxies for species in paleobiological studies might affect the results of these studies. Although most attention has been given to taxonomic diversity studies, this could also be true of disparity and phylogenetic studies. In particular, the assumption that particular character states truly diagnose all members of a genus might distort results. This study examines the disparity of Acanthoceratid ammonoids at both the generic and species level. 149 species from 42 genera were examined with 52 characters measured. Following the measurements, an inverse modeling simulation was run 100 times to generate a simulated phylogeny with …

Nepal: Geoscience in the Himalaya

Lichenometry, a technique used primarily in high latitudes and mountainous regions to date rock surface exposure, relies on estimations of lichen growth rates. Utilizing Rhizocarpon lichen, lichenometry has been extensively applied to date Late Holocene glacial landforms. In this study, we explore Rhizocarpon distribution in the Peri Himal of the Nepal Himalaya to understand the microclimatic and environmental mechanisms that dictate their growth location. We collected 25 data points throughout the western moraine of Ponkar Glacier near Kehcakyu Khola and around Ponkar Lake. Through this data we raised the question, under what conditions do Rhizocarpon lichen grow in high altitude …

Structural Analysis Of The South-Tibetan Detachment Assessing Channel Flow Model And Passive Roof Thrust Model, Cate Sloat Jul 2024

Structural Analysis Of The South-Tibetan Detachment Assessing Channel Flow Model And Passive Roof Thrust Model, Cate Sloat

Nepal: Geoscience in the Himalaya

The South Tibetan Detachment System (STDs) is a north-dipping, shear zone that played a major role in the evolution of the Himalayan orogeny. Despite this, its true nature is not completely understood as it is yet to be determined as purely a system of low-angle normal faulting or rather passive roof thrusting in which both extensional and contractional deformation takes place. The Channel flow Model views the role and timing of the STDs as coinciding with the Main Central Thrust (MCT) to squeeze out/extrude the lower crust of Tibet. In this model, due to the over-thickening of the Tibetan crust, …

Brittle-Ductile Transitions In The Kali Gandaki And Their Tectonic Significance, Ashton Brubaker Jul 2024

Brittle-Ductile Transitions In The Kali Gandaki And Their Tectonic Significance, Ashton Brubaker

Nepal: Geoscience in the Himalaya

Brittle-ductile transitions are key sites for analyzing metamorphism in a large-scale tectonic environment. Brittle zones are ruled by Coulomb’s Law, while ductile zones with plastic deformation are explained through the Flow law. The interaction of these two zones is not a finite point, but rather a transition that accounts for a large amount of tectonic activity. These transitions indicate areas of fault zones due to variations in rock strength. The Kali Gandaki valley has not been previously observed with these brittle-ductile transitions at the forefront of the research. Outcrops in the area provide evidence of both brittle and ductile deformation …

Deconstructing Disability In Malawi: A Multi-Perspective Qualitative Study On Understandings, Policy Development, And Policy Implementation, Johanna Lee

Capstone Collection

Disability models serve as frameworks to conceptualize understandings of disabilities, influencing the creation of policies and programs. The United Nations, through the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), has established international standards influenced by disability models from the Global North. Despite Malawi’s efforts to adopt the CRPD through numerous measures, people with disabilities still face challenges in accessing healthcare. The effectiveness of current policies in the health sector remains unclear. Therefore, it is crucial to consider local perspectives on disabilities, as well as differences in culture and livelihoods. This research employs thematic analysis to assess the perceptions …

Exploring Prescribing Practitioners’ Experiences And Perceptions Associated With Opioid Clinical Practice Guidelines Adherence To Treat Older Adults For Chronic Pain In Primary Care Practice Settings In The United States, Dara D. Skinner

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background: Chronic pain is a common complaint in older adults,’ and they often seek treatment from their primary care provider who may prescribe opioids to treat their chronic pain. Treating and managing an older adult chronic pain can be complex due to several factors such as the patient’s co-morbidities (other medical conditions), impaired cognition, and advanced age. Opioids have been used since the 1890s for treatment of pain (acute and chronic). Opioid use can cause fractures, falls, kidney failure, addiction, respiratory depression, and overdose in older adults. According to Tong et al. (2016) primary care providers were responsible for writing …

Searching For Justice: Moving Towards A Trans Inclusive Model Of Access To Justice In Canada, Evan Vipond, Pierre Cloutier De Repentigny

Dalhousie Law Journal

Access to justice literature has paid little attention to the role of gender identity and gender expression as barriers to justice that must be addressed. As a marginalized and disenfranchised population, trans and gender nonconforming people experience specific barriers to justice that cisgender people typically do not. This paper seeks to address the gap in access to justice literature by attending to specific barriers to justice that trans people face in Canada. These barriers include socioeconomic inequalities; exclusion from the legal system; sex/gender certification and bigenderism within the legal system; and transphobia and cissexism within the legal system. Calling for …

Informing The Debate On Lowering The Criminal Rate Of Interest, Gail Henderson, Katlin Abrahamson Jul 2024

Informing The Debate On Lowering The Criminal Rate Of Interest, Gail Henderson, Katlin Abrahamson

Dalhousie Law Journal

Canada has two markets for consumer credit. Consumers with middle to high incomes can draw on ‘mainstream’ forms of credit at reasonable interest rates, such as lines of credit and credit cards issued by chartered banks. Consumers living on low to moderate incomes, who also may have a poor credit score or no credit history, often find themselves pushed to high-cost credit products, such as instalment loans issued by alternative financial services providers. The effective annual interest rate on instalment loans can run up to the maximum permitted under section 347 of the Criminal Code. Anything above this constitutes a …

The exchange of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) within an incubator has a significant impact on embryonic development (ED) and hatching processes. This study examines the influence of non-ventilation (NV) conditions during the first ten days of incubation at high altitudes on Leghorn hens hatching eggs. Five hundred four hatching eggs were equally divided into three treatment groups and placed in twelve incubators (R = 4). The first group was subjected to standard ventilated conditions (V) during the setting phase. The ventilation inlet holes of the remaining incubators in the NV treatments were closed with …

Multi-Link Prediction For Mmwave Wireless Communication Systems Using Liquid Time-Constant Networks, Long Short- Term Memory, And Interpretation Using Symbolic Regression, Vishnu S. Pendyala, Milind Patil Jul 2024

Multi-Link Prediction For Mmwave Wireless Communication Systems Using Liquid Time-Constant Networks, Long Short- Term Memory, And Interpretation Using Symbolic Regression, Vishnu S. Pendyala, Milind Patil

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

A significant challenge encountered in mmWave and sub-terahertz systems used in 5G and the upcoming 6G networks is the rapid fluctuation in signal quality across various beam directions. Extremely high-frequency waves are highly vulnerable to obstruction, making even slight adjustments in device orientation or the presence of blockers capable of causing substantial fluctuations in link quality along a designated path. This issue poses a major obstacle because numerous applications with low-latency requirements necessitate the precise forecasting of network quality from many directions and cells. The method proposed in this research demonstrates an avant-garde approach for assessing the quality of multi-directional …

Context. Mid-infrared emission features are important probes of the properties of ionized gas and hot or warm molecular gas, which are difficult to probe at other wavelengths. The Orion Bar photodissociation region (PDR) is a bright, nearby, and frequently studied target containing large amounts of gas under these conditions. Under the “PDRs4All” Early Release Science Program for JWST, a part of the Orion Bar was observed with MIRI integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy, and these high-sensitivity IR spectroscopic images of very high angular resolution (0.2′′) provide a rich observational inventory of the mid-infrared (MIR) emission lines, while resolving the H …

Reading Colonial Transitions: Archival Evidence And The Archaeology Of Indigenous Action In Nineteenth-Century California, Lee M. Panich, Gustavo Flores, Michael Wilcox, Monica V. Arellano

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Archaeologists in North America and elsewhere are increasingly examining long-term Indigenous presence across multiple colonial systems, despite lingering conceptual and methodological challenges. We examine this issue in California, where archaeologists and others have traditionally overlooked Native persistence in the years between the official closing of the region’s Franciscan missions in the 1830s and the onset of US settler colonialism in the late 1840s. In particular, we advocate for the judicious use of the documentary record to ask new questions of Indigenous life during this short but critical period, when many Native Californians were freed from the missions and sought new …
