AUIQ Complementary Biological System
A thriving eco-system and abundant species diversity are crucial for all forms of life on Earth. Whether or not the climate remains stable has a direct impact on biodiversity and the ecosystem services that are provided by that diversity. There is a strong correlation between biodiversity and food security, and this is influencing how the impact of biodiversity on climate change is felt. Changes in the duration of the growth season for plants, the distribution of arable lands, and the availability of high-quality water are all ways in which climate change impacts agriculture. There will be numerous positive effects on …

Quasi – Monte Carlo Estimation For Functional Generalized Linear Mixed Models, Ruvini Jayamaha
Waldo Library Student Exhibits
Functional Data Analysis (FDA) is a topic of growing interest in the Statistics community. The data in FDA are smooth curves or surfaces in time or space which can be conceptualized as functions.
We propose a Functional Generalized Linear Mixed Model (FGLMM) to fit EEG data and estimate the parameters using Quasi-Monte Carlo Method.
This proposed model deals with non-Gaussian scalar response, functional predictor, and random effects. We relax the assumption of link and variance functions.

The Storytelling Study: Understanding Ourselves And Others Through Storytelling, Georgia Moses
Graduate Student Independent Studies
Study on oral storytelling in early childhood education is ample. Study on oral storytelling in the elementary grades, however, is limited. This is likely due to the connection between storytelling and dramatic play, a creative and imaginative exercise that loses value in many classrooms as children grow. The emergent themes across the developmental stages of seven, eight, and nine year olds illustrate the need for and power of storytelling in second and third grade classrooms. The Storytelling Study is an interdisciplinary, multimodal curriculum in which children foster deeper understandings of themselves and others through the exploration of oral storytelling. The …

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The numerical solution of differential equations using machine learning-based approaches has gained significant popularity. Neural network-based discretization has emerged as a powerful tool for solving differential equations by parameterizing a set of functions. Various approaches, such as the deep Ritz method and physics-informed neural networks, have been developed for numerical solutions. Training algorithms, including gradient descent and greedy algorithms, have been proposed to solve the resulting optimization problems. In this paper, we focus on the variational formulation of the problem and propose a Gauss–Newton method for computing the numerical solution. We provide a comprehensive analysis of the superlinear convergence properties …

Validity Of International Sales Contracts According To The United Nations Convention On Contracts Of The International Sale Of Goods 1980, Thea Mutiara Khalifa
Journal of Private International Law Studies
This article attempts to shed light on how the United Nations Convention on Contracts of the International Sale of Goods 1980 (CISG) regulates the validity of international sales contracts, using juridical normative research methods through literature studies. According to Article 4(a) of the CISG, the Convention does not govern matters on validity, with certain exceptions. This research shows that CISG governs some matters pertaining to validity: formal validity, initial impossibility of performance, and open-price contracts. As seen from the cases of Forestal Guarani v. Daros International and Geneva Pharmaceuticals v. Barr Laboratories, the CISG allocates those validity issues that do …

Veterans In Focus: Disability And Veterans In Rural America, Hannah W. Pepprock, Lillie Greiman, University Of Montana Rural Institute
Health and Wellness
There are an estimated 17 million Veterans living throughout the United States. Relative to the general population, Veterans are more likely to experience disability. Veterans are also disproportionately represented in rural areas across the U.S. As people with disabilities are also disproportionately represented in rural areas, it is valuable to explore the intersection between veteran status, disability, and rurality. This analysis uses publicly available date from the American Community Survey to examine service-connected disability rating status and the ACS-6 questions on functional ability as they related to U.S. regions and rurality.

Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) is an ultra–high vacuum crystal growth technique for the synthesis of high–purity materials. MBE allows for controlled deposition to the precision of a single atomic layer.
Understanding the optimal synthesis conditions for MBE can enhance experiment design and accelerate the discovery of new materials.
In this study, we apply materials informatics – investigating the utility of both quantum and conventional machine learning algorithms – to a decade’s worth of plasma–assisted MBE (PAMBE) data of GaN and InN. The goal is to investigate the relationships between PAMBE growth conditions and figures of merit for semiconductor crystals.

Amazon’S Algorithmic Rents: The Economics Of Information On Amazon, Ilan Strauss, Tim O’Reilly, Mariana Mazzucato
UC Law Science and Technology Journal
Amazon’s maturing e-commerce platform has seen its business strategy evolve from growth at any cost to a “quest for profit”, underpinned by its burgeoning $37.7bn advertising business. Through advertising, Amazon compels its captive third-party merchant ecosystem to pay for one of its most valuable assets – customer attention. Advertising leverages Amazon’s unique position as a discovery platform. Discovery is governed by Amazon’s algorithms — the nerve centre of its conduct and a critical guide to market structure. Algorithms are the principal market institution coordinating exchange online, yet often escape market investigations.
Prevailing doctrine assumes that platform rent extraction, via algorithmic …
