Nurse Residency
Background: The length of stay after treatment can put patients’ health and well-being at a disadvantage. Length of stay can not only cause delirium but can also have detrimental impacts on pre-existing comorbidities. By decreasing a patient's length of stay following the completion of treatment, there are lower levels of adverse outcomes that not only benefit the patient but also those around them.

Caste Inequality In Medical Crowdfunding In India, Arpit Shah
Caste Inequality In Medical Crowdfunding In India, Arpit Shah
Working Papers
Medical crowdfunding has gained significant popularity and importance, yet researchers argue that it might not offer equitable financial assistance tovulnerable groups. Studies in Western countries have highlighted disparitiesin medical crowdfunding based on racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic dimensions. Despite this, the equity implications of crowdfunding in India havenot been thoroughly investigated. We present the initial empirical evidenceindicating caste-based inequalities in medical crowdfunding within India.Leveraging a comprehensive dataset comprising 5,527 medical crowdfunding campaigns from one of India’s largest platforms, we evaluate the impactof the recipient’s caste identity on campaign outcomes. Our methodologyutilises administrative data to deduce caste from the recipient’s surname.Campaigns by individuals …

Cassava is the third most significant calorie source in the tropics. Its processing has changed from traditional methods to stainless steel processing machines. This study investigated the influence of cassava on metal release from two common stainless steels, ASTM 304 and 201, with and without friction, and on tribocorrosion (multianalytically) of 304. Cassava was relatively corrosive and hindered repassivation of the surface oxide of stainless steel, but it also acted as a lubricant against mechanical friction. The combined action of friction and cassava caused a significant increase in iron, chromium, nickel, and manganese release from the stainless steels (30–35- fold …

The British Library hack and its response serve as a clear example of the vulnerability of institutions of higher learning to such attacks and the importance of maintaining an open dialogue with the public during recovery. This open dialogue is currently lacking as universities attempt to move on and cover up these attacks quickly. This paper aims to start the conversation by providing three examples of institutions that went through a hack that left their services down for a significant period, how it affected those they serve, how these institutions responded, and what information was made public.

Fasthpocr: Pragmatic, Fast, And Accurate Concept Recognition Using The Human Phenotype Ontology., Tudor Groza, Dylan Gration, Gareth Baynam, Peter N Robinson
Faculty Research 2024
MOTIVATION: Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO)-based phenotype concept recognition (CR) underpins a faster and more effective mechanism to create patient phenotype profiles or to document novel phenotype-centred knowledge statements. While the increasing adoption of large language models (LLMs) for natural language understanding has led to several LLM-based solutions, we argue that their intrinsic resource-intensive nature is not suitable for realistic management of the phenotype CR lifecycle. Consequently, we propose to go back to the basics and adopt a dictionary-based approach that enables both an immediate refresh of the ontological concepts as well as efficient re-analysis of past data.

Cyber Red Lines: Government Responses To Cyberattacks On Critical Infrastructure, Denise L. Tennant, Louis Nolan, Deanna House
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
While the concept of red lines is relatively well-documented and discussed in areas of research surrounding deterrence and acts of war, the term cyber red lines is rather complicated and fairly immature in the research. Recognizing the ongoing challenges surrounding the red line term in a cyber context, this article seeks to define such a threshold within gray-zone cyber operations to determine an appropriate situation when the US Department of Defense could and should respond to state or nonstate actor operations that manifest as a cyberattack. The article also seeks to clarify what is meant by the term cyber gray …

Education abroad is held up as a high-impact practice with the potential to engage college and university students in a transformative learning experience (Kuh, 2008). The Institute for International Education (IIE) reports that 347,099 U.S. students received academic credit for study abroad during the 2018-2019 academic school year (IIE). Extensive research into student learning gains abroad have demonstrated that developing student metacognition, or one’s ability to be intentionally self-reflective, is central to transformative learning in the study abroad experience (Vande Berg et al., 2012; Zull, 2012). Consequently, international educators are continually searching for pedagogies (praxis) to facilitate metacognitive learning within …

Is Alaska Negative-Tax Arrangement Fair? Almost: Mathematical Analysis, Chon Van Le, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In the State of Alaska there is no state income tax. Instead, there is a negative tex: every year every resident gets some money from the state. At present, every resident -- from the poorest to the richest -- gets the exact same amount of money: in 2024, it is expected to be around $1500. A natural question is: Is this fair? Maybe poor people should get more since their needs are greater? Maybe the rich people should get proportionally more, since fairness means equal added happiness for all, and for rich people, extra $1500 is barely noticeable? There have …

For 2 X N Cases, Proportional Fitting Problem Reduces To A Single Equation, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many practical situations, for each of two classifications, we know the probabilities that a randomly selected object belong to different categories. For example, we know what proportion of people are below 20 years old, what proportion is between 20 and 30, etc., and we also know what proportion of people earns less than 10K, between 10K and 20K, etc. In such situations, we are often interested in proportion of people who are classified by two classifications into two given categories. For example, we are interested in the proportion of people whose age is between 20 and 30 and whose …

Stochastic Dominance: Cases Of Interval And P-Box Uncertainty, Kittawit Autchariyapanikul, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Traditional decision theory recommendation about making a decision assume that we know both the probabilities of different outcomes of each possible decision, and we know the utility function -- that describes the decision maker's preferences. Sometimes, we can make a recommendation even when we only have partial information about utility. Such cases are known as cases of stochastic dominance. In other cases, in addition to not knowing the utility function, we also only have partial information about the probabilities of different outcomes. For example, we may only known bounds on the outcomes (case of interval uncertainty) or bounds on the …

Ocular Gene Transfer In The Spotlight: Implications Of Newspaper Content For Clinical Communications, Shelly Benjaminy, Tania M. Bubela
Ocular Gene Transfer In The Spotlight: Implications Of Newspaper Content For Clinical Communications, Shelly Benjaminy, Tania M. Bubela
Office of the Provost
Background: Ocular gene transfer clinical trials are raising hopes for blindness treatments and attracting media attention. News media provide an accessible health information source for patients and the public, but are often criticized for overemphasizing benefits and underplaying risks of novel biomedical interventions. Overly optimistic portrayals of unproven interventions may influence public and patient expectations; the latter may cause patients to downplay risks and over-emphasize benefits, with implications for informed consent for clinical trials. We analyze the news media communications landscape about ocular gene transfer and make recommendations for improving communications between clinicians and potential trial participants in light of …

“We’Ve Been Doing Mindfulness Since Time Immemorial”: Provider Experiences Using Mindfulness-Based Interventions In American Indian And Alaska Native Communities, Jalene L. Herron
Psychology ETDs
American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) individuals are underrepresented in mindfulness research. Mindfulness may be relevant to some AI/AN traditions and aid in providing culturally responsive mental healthcare. This study examined the experiences of providers who use mindfulness-based interventions with AI/AN clients. Twenty-five providers completed interviews about their experiences. Three primary themes were identified using thematic analysis: 1) using a cultural lens in providing therapy, where providers integrate cultural practices and utilize a client centered approach; 2) framing mindfulness in AI/AN contexts through cultural adaptations to demonstrate the applicability of mindfulness to cultural settings; and 3) processes in implementing culturally …

Quantifying Compound And Nonlinear Effects Of Hurricane-Induced Flooding Using A Dynamically Coupled Hydrological-Ocean Model, Daoyang Bao, Z. George Xue, John C. Warner
Faculty Publications
We recently developed a dynamically coupled hydrological-ocean modeling system that provides seamless coverage across the land-ocean continuum during hurricane-induced compound flooding. This study introduced a local inertial equation and a diagonal flow algorithm to the overland routing of the coupled system’s hydrology model (WRF-Hydro). Using Hurricane Florence (2018) as a test case, the performance of the coupled model was significantly improved, evidenced by its enhanced capability of capturing backwater and increased water level simulation accuracy and stability. With four model experiments, we present a framework to detangle, define, and quantify compound and nonlinear effects. The results revealed that the flood …

Leveraging An Uncertainty Methodology To Appraise Risk Factors Threatening Sustainability Of Food Supply Chain, Rehab Mohamed, Mahmoud M. Ismail
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
By diminishing the risk factors associated with the food supply chain (FSC), we have recourse to strengthen the food supply chain's resilience, decrease food waste, and increase its sustainability. Prioritizing and identifying the risk factors impacting the sustainability of the food supply chain is essential for managing uncertainty and averting unfavorable consequences. This study attempts to identify and rank the most significant risks affecting the sustainability of the food supply chain under an uncertain environment. We use the α-Discounting multi-criteria decision-making (α-D MCDM) method for the main three risk factors: the risks of supply, the risks of demand, and the …

Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
Teachers are the backbone of our education system and are often overlooked sources of information within the education system itself. It’s critical to find the most up-to-date teaching practices and combine those practices by gaining insight from these teachers to ensure student success. Today, in the modern United States education system, teachers face many unique challenges in regard to their student population. The diversity within one classroom is so unique but can be challenging for teachers to address (Tomlinson, 2015). A practical method of addressing the needs of diverse populations that gives all diverse learners equal access to learning is …

A Roadmap To The Next-Generation Technology-Enabled Learning-Centered Environments In Aec Education, Yimin Zhu, Amirhosein Jafari, Amir H. Behzadan, Raja R.A. Issa
Faculty Publications
The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) education communities are increasingly facing challenges caused by social, technological, economic, environmental, and political changes. Addressing these issues requires AEC educators and practitioners to systematically rethink and reform many of their current practices. Anecdotal evidence in AEC education already exists with respect to pedagogical improvements made by individual technologies such as immersive computing, artificial intelligence, robotics, big data, cyberinfrastructure, and photogrammetry. However, an effective learning-centered environment is more complex than what any single technology can accomplish. In addition, the relationship between technology-intensive learning and digital inequity in AEC education remains, to the most extent, …
