Effect Of Changing Properties Of In-Pipe Inspection Robot And Payload Capacity On Its Performance, Sarra Gismelseed, Amur Al-Yehmadi, Riadh Zaier, Mojtaba Ghodsi
The Journal of Engineering Research
The performance of screw-drive in-pipe inspection robots is significantly influenced by factors such as wheel tilting angle, coefficient of friction, and spring constant. A comprehensive understanding of these parameters is critical for the effective design, optimization, and control of the robot, particularly to enhance energy efficiency and payload capacity during vertical pipeline inspections. In this study, we developed a mathematical model based on discrete Lagrangian mechanics to formulate an optimization problem aimed at minimizing power consumption and maximizing payload capacity under various dynamic constraints and design conditions. Our results show that increasing the wheel tilt angle allows the robot to …

The Online Spsg Parameters Prediction With Endorsement Based On Fem And The D-Q Model, Ahmed H. Ahmed, Basil M. Saied
The Journal of Engineering Research
The aim of this research is to present a method of online parameter estimation for a salient-pole, three-phase synchronous generator. Two main approaches have been used, based on different theories, to prove the validity of parameter estimation results. The first approach is based on the representation of synchronous machines using the d-q model with the sequence of the Hartley Series function and the finite element model (FEM). Therefore, two sets of parameter estimation results have been predicted. In the second approach, where the synchronous machine has been represented in real form, and the obtained results have been analysed to obtain …

Papr Reduction For Ofdm-Over-Noma Using Hybrid Partial Selective Mapping And Artificial Neural Networks, Tamadhar Al-Hashmi, Naser Tarhuni, Mostefa Mesbah, Hafiz Asif
The Journal of Engineering Research
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) combined with Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) represents a promising hybrid approach for next-generation wireless communication systems. By leveraging the strengths of both OFDM and NOMA, this integration aims to improve system capacity and spectral efficiency while supporting Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications (URLLC) for a wide range of devices. Despite its potential, one major limitation of this technology is the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), which can negatively impact system performance. Traditional methods for PAPR reduction, such as Selective Mapping (SLM), rely on searching for optimal phase rotations across all subcarriers, but these methods are computationally …

Experimental Investigation On The Hydraulic Conductivity Variation In Coastal And Inland Sabkha Soils In Kuwait Under Continuous Leaching, Fahad A. Al-Otaibi, Yahia E.-A. Mohamedzein, Mohammed Y. Al-Aghbari
The Journal of Engineering Research
The existence of high salt content in sabkha soils is highly affecting their geotechnical properties and leaching behaviour. In the current study, the variation of the hydraulic conductivity of two types of sabkha soils in Kuwait, namely coastal and inland sabkha, was experimentally investigated. For this purpose, leaching tests were conducted on soil samples under a pressure of 21 kN/m2 to increase water percolation. More than 55 pore volumes of water in more than 20 days were collected for measuring total dissolved solids (TDS). The variation in the hydraulic conductivity and TDS were analyzed periodically for the outflow at 5 …

Development Of An Algorithm For Daylight Simulation And Prediction In Buildings Using A Deep Learning Approach, Tolulope David Makanju, Matthew Olayinka Oyeleye, Oluwole John Famoriji
The Journal of Engineering Research
This paper presents an algorithm for estimating daylight in buildings based on the weather parameters. The algorithm was used to simulate daylight in buildings. The simulated result was used to develop a deep-learning predictive model that can help engineers estimate the daylight that will be appropriate during the design stage of a building. The deep learning approach for the prediction of daylight is based on the recurrent neural network Batch Normalisation-long short-term memory (BN-LSTM) model because daylight is a time-series occurrence. The accuracy of the model is less than 10% for the daylight lux level in the building, indicating that …

Spectral Unmixing is an important field of study nowadays which focuses on gener ating fractional abundance of each pixel into constituent materials .In this thesis we have tried to unmix each pixel into three end members namely glacial lake, debris and others with primarily focusing on glacial lake.We have performed various meth ods of linear spectral unmixing and non linear spectral unmixing. These methods are applied on the collected LandSat Data of east Himalayan terrain .Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in achieving high accuracy and efficiency in glacier lake tracking on LandSat data.
A Switch-Point-Aware Contrastive Approach To Sentiment Analysis Of Hinglish Code-Mixed Text, Prasant Kumar Sahoo
A Switch-Point-Aware Contrastive Approach To Sentiment Analysis Of Hinglish Code-Mixed Text, Prasant Kumar Sahoo
Master’s Dissertations
With the increasing use of social media in non-English-speaking regions, especially in India, people often use Romanized Hindi and English together in their online communication. In a single sentence, they frequently mix Romanized Hindi and English, creating code-mixed text. However, most multilingual transformer models are pre-trained primarily on monolingual data. As a result, NLP systems face challenges when processing code-mixed text, as a single word may be fragmented into meaningless subword pieces, making it difficult for the model to capture its semantic meaning accurately. In this dissertation, we propose a parameter efficient neural architecture consisting of three main components to …

From Acrimony To Forgiveness: How Adolescents Make Sense Of Childhood Maltreatment, Katherine Irwin
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
"This paper examines 16 adolescents’ narratives about the abuse they experienced during childhood. To date, most research examining child abuse (CA) survivorship and recovery has been conducted with adults who look back on their early experiences. Consequently, this study fills gaps in our knowledge by offering a youth-centered view of survivors’ efforts to cope with CA. The data come from a 12-year qualitative study of a group counseling program for high school students in Hawaiʻi. The findings revealed that a minority (n = 2) of the teens had negative views of their lives and futures, while the majority (n = …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Gender Inequality In Southeast Missouri Law Enforcement Agencies, Madeline Marie Whistler, Christopher Bradley, H. Hamner Hill
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
"Does gender inequality impact the careers of female law enforcement officers in the Southeast Missouri region? Using a qualitative single instrumental case study, seven cis-gendered female law enforcement officers who were employed at local law enforcement agencies within the Southeast Missouri region were interviewed to investigate the central research question. Four themes emerged from the data that illustrated their experiences: sexual exploitation and harassment, a lack of work-life balance, the presence of gender stereotypes, and patriarchal hierarchy and male dominance in the workplace. The findings suggest that the experiences of female law enforcement officers are heavily impacted by the behavior …

Bias Before Generation: Attention-Based Preemptive Fairness Signals In Large Language Models, Aniket Das
Master’s Dissertations
Warning: This paper includes examples of language that may be perceived as inappropriate or offensive. Large language models (LLMs) are known to propagate social biases embedded in their training corpora, producing outputs that disproportionately disadvantage individuals based on sensitive attributes such as gender, religion, race, sexual orientation and nationality. Existing mitigation strategies are either computationally prohibitive, require access to model parameters, or apply corrections only after biased content has already been generated. This work addresses a different question: can the model’s own internal attention dynamics, observed at inference time, serve as a reliable early-warning signal for bias, enabling intervention before …

Rethinking Interpreter Training: The Role Of Microlearning In Boosting Knowledge Retention, Hicham Boughaba
Al-Kīmiyā
This study examines the effectiveness of microlearning interventions in enhancing knowledge retention and interpreting performance among trainee interpreters. A quasi-experimental design was employed, with interpreting students divided into two groups: an experimental group receiving targeted microlearning modules on specialized terminology and a control group relying on general knowledge only. Their performance was evaluated according to four criteria: accuracy, clarity and fluency, terminology usage, and cultural and contextual understanding. Results indicate that participants who were exposed to microlearning modules achieved significantly higher scores across all evaluation criteria, with notable gains in accuracy and terminology usage. These findings suggest that microlearning constitutes …

Professions Langagières Et Intelligence Artificielle : Grand Remplacement Ou Complémentarité Éthique ?, Mary Yazbeck
Al-Kīmiyā
The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in the fields of translation and interpreting has sparked renewed debate about the future of language professions. Does the increasing integration of AI signal the gradual displacement of human expertise, or does it instead point to a reconfiguration of professional roles through new forms of human–machine cooperation? This article addresses this question through a philosophical and technocritical perspective, drawing on the work of Luciano Floridi, Hans Jonas, and other thinkers concerned with responsibility, digital ethics, and the place of the human within technological systems. It argues that the development of AI does not entail …

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works
Clergy's understanding of intimate partner violence underpins the support they provide to Christian women affected. However, the understanding of intimate partner violence by Cameroonian and Nigerian clergy living in England is unknown. This article explores their understanding of intimate partner violence through remote semi-structured interviews. The results showed that clergy understood that the intersection of individual, Christian and cultural beliefs around marriage and acculturation factors causes intimate partner violence. They acknowledged a lack of adequate knowledge of intimate partner violence. Developing training programmes on intimate partner violence for clergy and their congregations will enhance awareness and support for affected women.

People Who Use Opioids’ Encounters With Criminal Justice Personnel: A Qualitative Analysis, Barbara J. Costello
People Who Use Opioids’ Encounters With Criminal Justice Personnel: A Qualitative Analysis, Barbara J. Costello
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications
There is little research in the U.S. on the interactions of people who use opioids (PWUO) with criminal justice personnel, from their perspective. This study reports on the experiences with police and criminal justice personnel of 27 men and women in treatment for substance use disorder. In-depth interviews revealed that many respondents had had aversive experiences with the criminal justice system, including both physical and verbal abuse. Very few report receiving information on treatment from police. The evidence suggests that many police officers do not view opioid use disorder as a medical condition, and instead stigmatize PWUO. This study reveals …

This Synthetic-Chicken-Fillets dataset contains 1,000 synthetic 3D meshes designed to capture the natural variance and size diversity of real broiler fillets. The collection was developed to test automated woody breast detection algorithms within a physics-based simulation environment. We utilized a seed dataset of 2D depth maps derived from 40 real-world RGBD point cloud scans. These real depth maps were fed into a few-shot transfer learning pipeline using a generative adversarial network architecture. The resulting generated depth maps were reconstructed back into 3D meshes. The length and thickness of each mesh were randomly scaled based on physical measurements of real broiler …

The Geography Of Faces, Faith Abraham
be Still
The Geography of Faces takes its title from the idea that a face, seen across decades, becomes a kind of landscape—something you learn to read not at a glance but through accumulated return visits. For Dr. Vasquez, an older physician who has seen so much, her patients' faces are the territory she has spent a lifetime learning to navigate.
The patients are chosen to represent different dimensions of that longevity. They show affection built on years of small battles, continuity across a family, autonomy that is respected. Together, these patients make the case that primary care is less about problems …

Hiv-1 Tat-Driven Glutamate Dysregulation: Implications For Cognitive Impairment In Hand, Brenna Duffy, Michael Nonnemacher, Sandhya Kortagere
Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: HIV-1-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) manifest in 15% to 50% of people with HIV, impairing learning and memory and executive function. The chronic generation of HIV-1 Transactivator of transcription (Tat) likely contributes to HAND via direct neuronal toxicity and glial-mediated toxicity. This review summarizes our current understanding of how chronic Tat generation from microglia and astrocytes promote glutamate excitotoxicity.
RECENT FINDINGS: In recent years, the indirect effects of Tat through the activation of glial cells have gained significant interest. This review highlights microglia and astrocytes as HIV-1 reservoirs that release Tat protein in the central nervous system. Specific …

(Re)Claiming Homeplace: Dance As Embodied Resistance & Healing For Health & Spatial Justice, Preeya G. Kannan
University Honors Theses
This thesis argues that dance functions as both an upstream public health intervention and a form of radical spatial resistance; creating healing, agency, and belonging among historically marginalized communities. Drawing on bell hooks' concept of homeplace, Jasbir Puar's assemblage theory, Nancy Krieger's eco-social theory, and Katherine McKittrick's Black geographies, I position the body as both an ecological and political landscape shaped by histories of colonialism, racial capitalism, displacement, and resilience.
Through this community-based participatory research study, Homeplace, I explore dance as a form of social prescription that centers liberation rather than pathology. Movement is often reduced in public health discourse …
