What Journalism Feels Like: Considering The Body Of The Journalist, Mark Deuze, Laura Glitsos
What Journalism Feels Like: Considering The Body Of The Journalist, Mark Deuze, Laura Glitsos
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
All journalists have bodies. This commonsensical fact acquires more currency every day as the work of reporters and editors becomes automated, robotized, and taken over by (generative) artificial intelligence. The embodied nature of news work matters, not in the least because of the personal attachment practitioners have to what journalism is, or should be. However, in the rich history of journalism studies, bodily perspectives are remarkably absent—beyond descriptions of journalists as sociodemographic profiles. In this essay, we explore various theoretical frameworks to bring the body back into the study and practice of journalism. In our argument, we apply the insights …
Controlling Anti-Asian Conduct On College Campuses: Can Including Ethnic Studies Programs Help?, Hani Morgan
Controlling Anti-Asian Conduct On College Campuses: Can Including Ethnic Studies Programs Help?, Hani Morgan
Faculty Publications
The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered hostile acts against Asian college students. One of the ways to respond to these acts is to increase Asian American ethnic studies programs and courses. Although critics argue that ethnic studies cause divisiveness, research indicates that they are beneficial to students from all groups. University administrators may fear implementing these programs because they sometimes associate them with the violence that occurred during the late 1960s when students demanded ethnic studies to be included in the college curriculum. But this to a great extent by the poor representation of racial minority groups in the curriculum and …

Notre Dame College of Ohio was a staple in South Euclid Ohio for over 100 years, starting as a women’s training college and moving to a college helping local disadvantaged students experience a place of higher learning, closed in May 2024. Over a century of learning in their hallowed halls, students no longer sit in the classroom and venture the grounds. This tale of a small college closure is a growing trend throughout the United States. Small cities are having to grapple with the loss of their hometown institutions. Not only are the students left with limited options for continuing …

The Impact Of Wellness Programs On Teacher Stress And Coping, Jessica Brinkley
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of ten secondary-level educators and their perceptions of work-related stress and wellness programs as a coping mechanism. Participants were middle and high school teachers in one school district in the Pacific Northwest that has a wellness program. Through semi-structured interviews, it employs a transcendental phenomenological analysis to merge participants’ experiences with Lazarus and Folkman’s (1987) Transactional Model of Stress and Coping. The research underscores the need for systemic changes to address teacher stress and well-being before wellness programs can serve as an effective coping mechanism. Critical themes found are High Workload and Time …

Development Of An In Vitro Squamous Metaplasia Model Using Airway Basal Stem Cells, Arash Tahmasbi
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Squamous metaplasia (SM) of the airway epithelium is an abnormal condition that is caused by exposure to airborne toxicants, cigarette smoke, pollutants, and pathogens. Since SM of the airway was first documented in the 1970s, data on this epithelial disease remain limited. More research is needed to fully understand this epithelial disorder and to prevent its progression into severe illnesses such as chronic bronchitis (CB), COPD, and squamous cell carcinoma. We developed 3D models of SM using airway basal stem cells (ABSCs) isolated from lung obtained from postmortem human donors. The ABSCs were cultured at the air-liquid interface (ALI) for …

Container Runtime Vulnerability Mitigation Using User Namespace Isolation, Alexander Edsell
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Although containers have revolutionized application deployment by allowing for rapid and consistent deployment, their growing adoption has also raised significant security concerns. Each container is an isolated instance of an operating system that comes pre-packaged with the users desired applications. With multiple containers running on a host machine, an adversary can potentially break out of the container into the host machine. This project investigates the effectiveness of user namespace isolation as a security mechanism to mitigate container escape vulnerabilities that target the container’s runtime.
The research questions are: Question 1, does user namespace isolation mitigate container runtime vulnerabilities that target …

Assessing Khumbu Region Glaciers Mass Balance Change Using Geospatial Techniques From 2012 To 2024, Yashvi Jagatbhai Shah
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalaya are critical for sustaining the water supply of South Asia's major rivers, upon which over 230 million people, both in the mountainous regions and lowland areas, depend. Climate change is driving rapid glaciers melt near the summit of Mount Everest, located at an elevation of approximately 7,906 meters (25,938 feet). This has resulted in glacier thinning occurring up to 80 times faster than the original ice formation. However, due to their disposition in a complex topographic setting and inaccessible terrain, continuous glacier observations pose significant challenges.
This study evaluated the mass balance of …

Marianismo:Challenging Traditional Mexican-American Roles For Women, Clarissa Aileen Montalvo
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
While plentiful research has examined Machismo as a gender role norm for Mexican men, little has examined the role of women’s traditional Marianismo roles. Research identifies 5 “pillars” of Marianismo: family, virtuosity, subordination, self-silencing, and spirituality. I was interested in whether adhering to some traditional pillars of Marianismo (e.g., family) allow women to break away from other, more oppressive pillars (e.g., subordination, self-silencing). I tested whether traditional Marianismo beliefs impact women’s general mental health, and whether differences in traditional beliefs influence the degree to which women can be challenged to push back against more negative pillars by focusing on the …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The combination of distributed digital factories (D2Fs) with sustainable practices has been proposed as a revolutionary technique in modern manufacturing. This review paper explores the convergence of D2F with innovative sensor technology, concentrating on the role of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) in promoting this paradigm. A D2F is defined as an integrated framework where digital twins (DTs), sensors, laser additive manufacturing (laser-AM), and subtractive manufacturing (SM) work in synchronization. Here, DTs serve as a virtual replica of physical machines, allowing accurate monitoring and control of a given manufacturing process. These DTs are supplemented by sensors, providing near-real-time data to …

Artificial Intelligence And Cracks In The Foundation Of Intellectual Property, Robin C. Feldman
Artificial Intelligence And Cracks In The Foundation Of Intellectual Property, Robin C. Feldman
Faculty Scholarship
Our implicit image of progress and the standards we use to calibrate human contribution to progress are quietly at risk from the onslaught of artificial intelligence (AI). AI has the potential to significantly shrink the pool of creative work that is protectable by intellectual property (IP) law and the range of information that is protectable, as well as shrinking the value proposition of IP regimes themselves.
As society faces this changing landscape, we must tread carefully to distinguish fears about AI from the task of defining the boundaries of intellectual property, whose theoretic concepts aren’t designed to bear such weighty …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Asthma is a highly prevalent but heterogenous condition. Uncontrolled disease is relatively common and may be due to ongoing inflammation and/or persisting bronchial hyper-reactivity. Bronchial thermoplasty has been in use for many years but optimal case selection and post-procedure assessment remain uncertain. We present a case of a gentleman in his 50s with lifelong asthma who experienced a persistent loss of control following influenza A in 2017. Despite multidisciplinary assessment and guideline-based escalation of therapy, he had persisting symptoms. In the context of his atopy, he was trialled unsuccessfully on dupilumab. Bronchial thermoplasty (BT) was undertaken with good clinical benefit. …

With the increasing demand for mobile computing, the requirement for intelligent resource management has also increased. Cloud computing lessens the energy consumption of user equipment, but it increases the latency of the system. Whereas edge computing reduces the latency along with the energy consumption, it has limited resources and cannot process bigger tasks. To resolve these issues, a Priority-based Hybrid task Partitioning and Offloading (PHyPO) scheme is introduced in this paper, which prioritizes the tasks with high time sensitivity and offloads them intelligently. It also calculates the optimal number of partitions a task can be divided into. The utility of …

Australian Aboriginal people experience stressors from inequalities across crucial social determinants, including deep and entrenched disadvantage and exclusion. The impact of unaddressed historical issues is pervasive and intergenerational. The disproportionate rates of Aboriginal youth suicide, juvenile detention and imprisonment highlight the inadequacy of existing social and emotional wellbeing programs and services for Aboriginal children and young people. There is increasing recognition in Australia that aligning social and emotional wellbeing interventions with Western values and conceptions of mental health is one of the main barriers to service uptake among Aboriginal people. This suggests fundamental questions remain unanswered about what type of …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The history of exercise science research has undergone relatively little examination, and exercise science students receive little education about the field’s history. Photographs are tools that lecturers and writers can use to educate audiences about history. Yet, no resource exists that tells educators where they can find photographs of individuals participating in early studies about exercise or related topics (e.g., physical education, physical medicine). Here, the aim was to identify papers published before 1980 that contain photographs of boys and men participating in studies about exercise or related topics, aggregate the papers into a bibliometric list, and describe the photographs. …

Enhancing information security has become increasingly significant in the digital age. This paper investigates the concept of physical layer security (PLS) within a relay-aided power line communication (PLC) system operating over a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel based on MK model. Specifically, we examine the transmission of confidential signals between a source and a distant destination while accounting for the presence of multiple eavesdroppers, both colluding and non-colluding. We propose a two-phase jamming scheme that leverages a full-duplex (FD) amplify-and-forward (AF) relay to address this challenge. Our primary objective is to maximize the secrecy rate, which necessitates the optimization of the …

Aim: To examine the associations of a diet high in flavonoid-rich foods, as reflected by a “Flavodiet Score” (FDS), the major individual food contributors to flavonoid intake, and flavonoid subclasses with type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk in the UK Biobank cohort. Materials and methods: Flavonoid intakes were estimated from ≥2 dietary assessments among 113,097 study participants [age at enrolment: 56 ± 8 years; 57% female] using the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) databases. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to investigate associations between dietary exposures and T2D. Results: During 12 years of follow-up, 2628 incident cases of T2D were …

Background: With an increasing number of grandparents providing care to their grandchildren, calls have been made for these caregivers to be considered important stakeholders in encouraging children’s engagement in health-promoting behaviors, such as physical activity. Understanding the perspectives of grandparents who provide care is crucial to informing efforts that aim to increase children’s physical activity, yet little is understood about their perceptions of specific barriers and enablers to promoting children’s physical activity and reducing screen time. The present study sought to explore these perceptions. Methods: Semi-structured focus groups and individual interviews were conducted with grandparents who reported providing care to …
