Understanding Parental Perspectives On Youth Substance Use In Urban New Jersey: A Rapid Qualitative Analysis, Mirriam Mananah Jan 2025

Understanding Parental Perspectives On Youth Substance Use In Urban New Jersey: A Rapid Qualitative Analysis, Mirriam Mananah

Public Health Theses

Adolescent substance use remains a significant public health issue, particularly for Black youth who face disproportionate consequences due to systemic inequities and community-level risk factors. While existing prevention programs exist, few are culturally tailored to the needs of Black families in urban environments. This thesis uses the ADAPT-ITT framework to guide the cultural adaptation of the Strong African American Families (SAAF) program, focusing on the “Assessment” phase through qualitative research.Twenty interviews were conducted with Black parents and guardians of youth aged 10–17 in Paterson and East Orange, New Jersey. Using rapid qualitative analysis, five key themes emerged: (1)Parent-Led Communication as …

INTRODUCTION

Evidence points to dysregulated Ca2+ in neurons and astrocytes in models of amyloidosis. While most of these data were obtained in vitro or in vivo under anesthesia, less work has investigated these variables in awake ambulating mice.

METHODS

Astrocytic Ca2+ fluctuations (GCaMP8f) were imaged concomitantly with vasoreactivity in S1 on a two-photon microscope during rest and ambulation. Single-cell resolution variables were extracted using continuous wavelet transform and traditional ΔF/F measures.

RESULTS

Along with increases in amyloid beta (Aβ) accumulation, we found significant reductions in measures of astrocyte functional connectivity, pairwise correlations, and network synchronicity in older 5×FAD …

This study examines the role of topography as a dynamic boundary condition that limits the efficiency of fluvial erosion in the post-glacial Teton Range landscape. The volume of sediment currently stored in two major catchments was estimated using high-resolution LiDAR and geometric reconstructions of depth to bedrock. Seismic reflection data in Moran Bay reveals post-glacial sediment preserved behind a submerged moraine, which isolates the bay from the larger Jackson Lake depocenter. The volume of post-glacial sediment stored in the canyons and bay totals 173.82 ± 19.5336.0 (×10−3 km3), which translates to a catchment-wide sediment production rate of 0.17 ± 0.02 …

A Framework For Ai Implementation In Construction: Use Cases, Challenges, And Benefits For Contractors, Jaqueline De Aquino Leite Gomes

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

The construction industry is one of the most important sectors that contribute to the economy worldwide, but it has been very slow in adopting digital transformation. Artificial Intelligence is the backbone of digital innovation, and it can help solve inefficiencies, improve safety, and enhance decision-making in construction. This thesis reviews 85 academic papers, identifies 354 AI use-cases, 180 benefits, and 173 challenges. Key findings have looked at the role of AI in safety monitoring, design optimization, and operational efficiency, while barriers involve data scarcity, high costs, and readiness of the workforce.

All of these challenges have one very handy framework …

Genetic Property Rhetoric And The Public Domain, Dave Fagundes Jan 2025

Genetic Property Rhetoric And The Public Domain, Dave Fagundes

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

Among the many themes that illuminate Jorge Contreras’s The Genome Defense, this Essay focuses on property. It considers the rhetorical role played by property in convincing both courts and the public that patenting genetic data was legally and ethically objectionable. This Essay begins by locating property—and public property—as a major theme in the dialogue surrounding the Myriad litigation. It then situates this rhetorical move in the context of property-talk generally, highlighting the distinctiveness of leveraging public rather than private ownership as a means of accessing moral intuitions. Finally, this Essay reflects on what the use of public property rhetoric …

Existential Threats And Deterrence: Japan's Legal Pathway To Enhanced Collective Security In Asia, Nobuhisa Ishizuka Jan 2025

Existential Threats And Deterrence: Japan's Legal Pathway To Enhanced Collective Security In Asia, Nobuhisa Ishizuka

American University International Law Review

With the Japanese Cabinet’s decision in December 2022 to comprehensively upgrade Japan’s security posture, and its rapid build-up of its defense capabilities, Japan’s role in Asia’s security architecture has been undergoing a fundamental shift. This article places Japan’s 2015 Peace and Security Legislation in the context of the U.N. collective security system and argues that its most significant achievement has been to expand Japan’s power to engage more proactively in the Asian collective security order. To date, commentators have focused on the legislation’s role in expanding the Japanese constitution’s limitations on the use of force to permit collective self-defense. This …

Can Prior Censorship Be A Necessary Tool For The Protection Of Human Rights?, Leandro Leo Rebelo Jan 2025

Can Prior Censorship Be A Necessary Tool For The Protection Of Human Rights?, Leandro Leo Rebelo

American University International Law Review

Prior censorship is unequivocally interpreted by the Inter-American Human Rights System (“Inter-American System”) as a step too far in moderating expression. Except in the quite narrow circumstances allowed for under Article 13(4) of the American Convention on Human Rights (“ACHR”), the Inter-American System has reiterated that prior censorship is forbidden. However, prior censorship is widely used in social media platforms as a tool of content moderation. Should such techniques be banned, or should more exceptions be allowed in the regulation of speech?

Soil Aggregation, Aggregate Stability, And Associated Soil Organic Carbon In Huron Mountains Forests, Michigan, Usa, Xiaoyong Chen, Timothy Gsell, John A. Yunger, Lynda Randa, Yuanying Peng, Mary E. Carrington Jan 2025

Soil Aggregation, Aggregate Stability, And Associated Soil Organic Carbon In Huron Mountains Forests, Michigan, Usa, Xiaoyong Chen, Timothy Gsell, John A. Yunger, Lynda Randa, Yuanying Peng, Mary E. Carrington

Faculty Authors and Creators Reception

Soil organic carbon (SOC) plays a critical role in regulating the global carbon (C) cycle, with forest soils serving as significant C sinks. Soil aggregate stability and the distribution of SOC in different aggregate fractions would be affected by different forest types. In this study, we investigate the distribution and dynamics of SOC within different soil aggregate fractions across three main forest types in the Huron Mountains, Michigan, USA: white birch–eastern hemlock mixed forest, eastern-hemlock-dominated forest, and sugar maple forest. We hypothesize that variations in species composition and soil depth influence SOC storage and aggregate stability through mechanisms such as …

Taming The Kangaroos, Matt Garcia Jan 2025

Taming The Kangaroos, Matt Garcia

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Low-level state courts frequently disregard federal law. And though the judgments of these courts have profound legal consequence for millions of Americans, they receive little oversight. Rather than bastions of justice, low-level state courts are too often sites of lawlessness, earning them the shameful label “kangaroo courts.” This article proposes a path forward by which advocates can curb that lawlessness and enforce critically important federal protections.

As part of the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, a broad legislative effort to protect the national economy and public health infrastructure, Congress altered mandatory procedures in eviction suits. Evictions …

Nurse's Satisfaction With The Implementation Of A Standardized Physical Assessment Template In Home Based Medical Care, Nicole Silvestri

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Background and Literature Review:
Home based medical care (HBMC), part of Optum’s UnitedHealth division, delivers in-home urgent care to medically complex patients at high risk for hospitalization. A nurse is dispatched to the home and a provider connects via telemedicine to conduct the visit. Currently, there is no standardized documentation tool to communicate physical assessment findings between the in-home nurse and the telemedicine provider. A literature review was conducted using PubMed and CINAHL with search terms including nursing satisfaction, physical assessment, EMR, template, standardized tool, and documentation. This revealed challenges in nursing documentation, communication, and physical assessment, particularly regarding …

Article Iii Standing For Cercla Private Cost Recovery Actions: How The Test's Strained Logic Belies Its Authority, Jonathan M. Palacios

Fordham Environmental Law Review

This Note examines how Article III standing doctrine applies to

private plaintiffs’ cost recovery actions under § 107(a)(4)(B) of the

Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and

Liability Act. A review of judicial decisions reveals inconsistencies

in the analysis of injury in fact and traceability, and suggests that

current Article III standing doctrine is misaligned with its purported

objectives. In response, this Note proposes a structured framework

for assessing injury in fact and a refined approach to analyzing

traceability that distinguishes between different forms of causal

uncertainty. These doctrinal adjustments should better align case

outcomes with Article III standing doctrine’s constitutional and …

Reducing Friction In Machine Oil Via Cesium-Hybridized Graphene Oxide Quantum Dot Additives, Islam Gomaa, Sherief Elsoudy, Maryam Galal, Ahmed Azim Jan 2025

Reducing Friction In Machine Oil Via Cesium-Hybridized Graphene Oxide Quantum Dot Additives, Islam Gomaa, Sherief Elsoudy, Maryam Galal, Ahmed Azim

Nanotechnology Research Centre

Friction and wear are among the most common causes of energy loss and component failure in mechanical systems, accounting for around 20–30% of total global energy consumption. Conventional lubricants fail to provide consistent performance in harsh conditions due to inadequate additive dispersion, agglomeration, and restricted surface reactivity. Recent advances in nanomaterial-based lubricants have shown promise, but it remains difficult to achieve significant friction and wear reduction at low additive concentrations while preserving stability. In this study, we synthesized and tested cesium-hybridized graphene oxide quantum dots (Cs-GOQDs) as novel lubricant additives. When incorporated into machine oil at 0.1 wt%, Cs-GOQDs reduced …

Cronyism In Creating Chronic Disease—A Path To Food Justice, Martha Leonard Jan 2025

Cronyism In Creating Chronic Disease—A Path To Food Justice, Martha Leonard

St. Thomas Law Review

Central to this discussion is a quote often attributed to the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates: “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.” Today, physicians recognize the crucial role of diet in maintaining good health and preventing chronic disease, but U.S. laws fail to reflect this understanding. The health field has seen significant progress in scientific research on pathology; however, nutritional research presents a challenging and contradictory landscape. Corporate influence in scientific research leads to a lack of consensus on the most optimal diet for promoting general health, presenting a challenge for policymaking. The dark reality is that …

Solving The Proxy Advisory Problem: Minimum Regulation For Maximum Competition, Dominic P. Keilty Jan 2025

Solving The Proxy Advisory Problem: Minimum Regulation For Maximum Competition, Dominic P. Keilty

Michigan Business & Entrepreneurial Law Review

The proxy advisory industry is often criticized on two primary accounts: the lack of accountability for informational accuracy in the development of voting standards and the conflicts of interest faced by advisors when they make proxy voting recommendations on issuers to which they have previously provided corporate governance consulting services. The industry has also been accused of having “anemic” levels of competition, since only two advisors command a vast majority of the market share. While much has been written about curtailing the prevalence and effects of proxy advisor conflicts of interest through increased regulation, the regulatory route toward increased informational …

Major-Questions Lenity, Joel S. Johnson Jan 2025

Major-Questions Lenity, Joel S. Johnson

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Both the historic rule of lenity and the new major questions doctrine rest on a fundamental commitment to the separation of powers for important policy questions. In light of that shared justification, the logic of the major questions doctrine in the administrative-law context has much to offer lenity in the criminal law context. In fact, the major-questions framework is strikingly similar to a rationale that has recently emerged in some of the Supreme Court's decisions narrowly construing federal penal statutes. That emerging rationale can be understood as a modest form of major-questions lenity that may lead to a more robust …

Assessing The Intellectual Capital Of Value Creation Process Of Commercial Banks In The European Union, Chen Rong, Muhammad Safdar Sial, Susana Álvarez-Otero, Hoje Jo

Finance

This study examines the impact of intellectual capital on the overall value of commercial banks within the European Union (EU). The research aims to identify how these banks can evaluate and enhance their intellectual capital to improve operational performance. The study employs the value-added intellectual coefficient (VAIC) model to measure the efficiency of three types of capital: structural capital (SC), which is the value added by the company minus human capital; employed physical and financial capital (CE), representing the total financial capital available to the company; and human capital (HC), calculated based on employee costs. Data were sourced from the …
