At The Bottom Of The Barrel: Rum’S Influence On Those Who Made It, Camryn Counsil Jan 2025

At The Bottom Of The Barrel: Rum’S Influence On Those Who Made It, Camryn Counsil

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

This paper examines the British Empire’s increasing rum production across their colonies in the West Indies during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Governmental officials, advertisers, and other influential citizens sought to establish rum as the beverage of choice among British society because of its economic, political, and social sensibilities. This growing enthusiasm established negative consequences, affecting the standards of living and social dynamics within communities of enslaved laborers on Caribbean plantations.

Criminalizing Ecocide: An Opportunity To Embed The Inseparability Of Humans From Nature Into The Law, Rebecca Hamilton Jan 2025

Criminalizing Ecocide: An Opportunity To Embed The Inseparability Of Humans From Nature Into The Law, Rebecca Hamilton

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Amid widespread acknowledgment that we live on a planet in peril, the term “ecocide” packs a powerful rhetorical punch. Extant regulatory approaches to environmental protection feel insufficient in the face of the triple threat of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. International criminal prosecution for ecocide, by contrast, promises to meet the moment, and a recent proposal to introduce ecocide into the canon of core international crimes is gaining traction. Assuming the push to criminalize ecocide continues to gain momentum, this Article argues that the primary (and perhaps, sole) benefit that international criminal law can offer in this context is …

Educational Behavioral Strategies For Students Who Have Encountered Adverse Childhood Experiences, Andrea J. Sullivan Jan 2025

Educational Behavioral Strategies For Students Who Have Encountered Adverse Childhood Experiences, Andrea J. Sullivan

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) affect approximately 1 in 4 children in the United States, often resulting in behavioral and developmental challenges within school settings. This qualitative case study applied Thomas et al.’s (2019) trauma-informed framework to examine the extent to which 15 Title I elementary teachers in a rural West Virginia district implemented evidence-based practices to address trauma-related behaviors. Using semi-structured virtual interviews and a peer-reviewed protocol, data were thematically analyzed across key domains including trauma screening, interdisciplinary collaboration, positive behavior intervention systems (PBIS), cognitive-behavioral strategies, restorative practices, multitiered systems of support (MTSS), social emotional learning (SEL), and family engagement. …

Community-School Partnerships In Action: Exploring Student Needs, Outcomes, And Perceptions In A Communities-In-Schools Program In North Texas, Teresa Vega Uriostegui

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which elementary students’ characteristics and educational backgrounds were associated with their identified need of academic, behavioral, and social service supports, and how these factors were associated to students’ end-of-year outcomes, as in improvement related to the support services they received. In addition, the study aimed to explore students’ perceptions of their satisfaction with and experiences of the integrated support services provided through the CIS program. This study, conducted in three Title 1 public elementary schools in suburban North Texas, included 306 students in grades PreK through 5th. …

The Use Of Therapeutic Communication To De-Escalate Aggression And Violence In Clients Living In A Homeless Shelter, Tionna S. Felder Jan 2025

The Use Of Therapeutic Communication To De-Escalate Aggression And Violence In Clients Living In A Homeless Shelter, Tionna S. Felder

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Individuals working at homeless shelters have the daunting task of managing violent/aggressive behaviors with the population they serve. This project focused on educating homeless shelter staff on the use of therapeutic communication to decrease the escalation of aggression and violence when caring for their guests. The DNP Project Leader taught 23 homeless shelter staff members, and the project included three 2-hour educational sessions. The first class focused on understanding what regions in the brain are responsible for aggressive, violent, and emotional behaviors; the second class focused on what the literature says about aggressive behavior in homelessness; and the last class …

Development And Application Of New Method And Platform For Correlated Oxides, Zheting Jin Jan 2025

Development And Application Of New Method And Platform For Correlated Oxides, Zheting Jin

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Strongly correlated oxides, including high-temperature superconductors such as cuprates and nickelates, exhibit complex quantum phenomena that can challenge conventional electronic structure theories. This thesis develops and applies advanced computational methods to study these systems, aiming to provide a comprehensive first-principles description of their structural, spin, and electronic properties. First, a novel cluster slave-particle method is introduced to improve the treatment of electron correlations in extended Hubbard models, capturing strong correlation effects with high computational efficiency and benchmarking well against established many-body techniques. This method is then combined with density functional theory calculations and applied to cuprates, where we demonstrate how …

On “Self” Care, Suzanne A. Kim Jan 2025

On “Self” Care, Suzanne A. Kim

Connecticut Law Review

The dominant answer to popular calls for self care in everyday discourse is a thriving eleven billion dollar industry. The self care economy encompasses workplace wellness programs, consumer goods and services, and entrepreneurship. This infrastructure revolves around commercial consumers and providers and advances through conceptions of health and well-being centered on individuals.

Despite their prevalence, the concept and provision of self care have gone underexamined in legal critiques of societal underinvestment in care. This Article fills this gap by exploring the social construction of the dominant contemporary conception of self care in the United States, one that continues to be …

Un-Fathering The Constitution, Lorianne Updike Toler Jan 2025

Un-Fathering The Constitution, Lorianne Updike Toler

Connecticut Law Review

Constitutional law turns on Madison’s vision. This because Madison is universally acclaimed by the Supreme Court and legal academe as the Constitution’s father. However, Madison’s constitutional parentage sounds more in lore than logic.

A careful review of recent historiography, Madison’s own writings, and new analytics tools available on the Quill Project reveal Madison as much less important to the Constitution than previously thought. He did not bring about the Convention, did not write the Virginia Plan, and was not that influential at the Constitutional Convention. Immediately after the Convention, Madison considered himself and the Constitution a failure, and disclaimed any …

A Restorative Justice Alternative For Trafficking Survivors: The Need For A Collaborative Approach In Establishing A Pilot Program Addressing Survivor-Articulated Needs, Stephanie Richard, Suzanne S. La Pierre Jan 2025

A Restorative Justice Alternative For Trafficking Survivors: The Need For A Collaborative Approach In Establishing A Pilot Program Addressing Survivor-Articulated Needs, Stephanie Richard, Suzanne S. La Pierre

Connecticut Law Review

Human trafficking survivors not only suffer physical and psychological harm during the commission of the crimes against them, but also are often further harmed through forced involvement in the criminal justice system. With the current focus on apprehending and punishing perpetrators as the primary tool promoted in the United States to prevent trafficking, survivors forced to be witnesses against their perpetrators lose their self-determination in ways replicating the abusive patterns of their traffickers. To aid investigation and prosecution of traffickers, they are required to provide testimony reliving their experiences. Forced testimony is also often the only option available for avoiding …

Epidermal Stem Cells Control Periderm Mechanics And Injury Repair Via Matrix-Driven Specialization Of Intercellular Junctions, Mengze He Jan 2025

Epidermal Stem Cells Control Periderm Mechanics And Injury Repair Via Matrix-Driven Specialization Of Intercellular Junctions, Mengze He

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Epidermal stem cells interact with the extracellular matrix (ECM) to regulate their differentiation and maintain skin architecture. Yet, it remains unclear whether these interactions extend beyond cell fate determination to influence broader skin functions. Here, we demonstrate that the protective, mechanically shielding properties of the periderm -the superficial epidermal cells (SECs) of the embryonic bilayered skin - are orchestrated by interactions between the underlying undifferentiated basal epidermal stem cells (BECs) and the ECM. Using the developing zebrafish fin fold, we identify that BECs form distinct collagen- versus laminin- enriched basement membranes, enabling the SECs above the BEC-laminin areas to close …

Structural Studies Of Cellular Prion Protein And Amyloid-B Oligomers, Lauren Klein Jan 2025

Structural Studies Of Cellular Prion Protein And Amyloid-B Oligomers, Lauren Klein

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease with significant societal impacts. AD is the only top ten leading cause of death that cannot be prevented, cured, slowed, or even diagnosed before symptoms are present. AD, similar to other neurodegenerative diseases, has been linked to protein aggregation as the key factor in the disease pathology. However, the mechanism by which AD proliferates is poorly understood. Recent advancements in techniques and methods in structural biology, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron microscopy (EM), have opened a new era of studies into protein aggregates implicated in neurodegenerative diseases, including AD. Therefore, this …

Generative Artificial Intelligence: Legal Ethics Issues, Kincaid Brown Jan 2025

Generative Artificial Intelligence: Legal Ethics Issues, Kincaid Brown

Law Librarian Scholarship

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is transforming nearly every sector of society including the practice of law. Legal professionals are increasingly using AI tools for research, drafting, contract review, and even predicting judicial outcomes with as many as one third of respondents to a survey using GenAI daily. But with this rapid adoption come questions that go beyond efficiency and instead point to the core of legal ethics including issues such as competence, confidentiality, and professional judgment.

Genre Audiences, Lcgft And User Warrant: An Exploratory Study, Deborah Tomaras, Allison Bailund, Joshua Bergmann, Abby Dover, Steven W. Holloway, C. Rockwell Strader

Law Librarian Scholarship

The Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms (LCGFT) vocabulary is among the most prominent genre vocabularies used in library cataloging. To investigate how the current application of LCGFT affects users’ genre access, we gathered data from library patrons, library staff, and parties involved in genre creation and use. The results demonstrate that patrons actively seek out genre materials in libraries, often via library catalogs, and that LCGFT has room for growth and expansion that might enhance patrons’ search experience.
