Gardner-Webb Mission Team Will Assist In Medical Clinics In Eswatini, Office Of University Communications
Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive
In May, Gardner-Webb University students and leaders will travel to Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) to assist in the medical clinics run by the Kudvumisa Foundation (https://www.kudvumisafoundation.org/). Impoverished families in this African country have little to no access to medical care and one of the world’s highest HIV/Aids prevalence rates. Over the last 15 years, with the help of generous donors and volunteers, the non-profit organization has built two clinics and maintains a mobile outreach van. The Foundation’s missionaries constantly strive to increase the number of families they serve.

Clinical Research Faculty Publications
Background: Postpartum weight retention is a major contributor to obesity in later life resulting in long-term health consequences in women. Postpartum lifestyle interventions are known to be effective in reducing postpartum weight retention and improving the overall health and wellbeing of mothers but have poor reach and engagement. This study describes the engagement of mothers with young children in the development of a theory- and evidence-based intervention to reduce postpartum weight retention. Methods: A participatory design methodology with input from a community mothers' group, literature reviews and an expert advisory group was applied. Mothers who were members of ‘Mothers of …

The Power Of Spiritual Leadership In The Rite Of Christian Initiation Of Adults, Stefanie Mingari
The Power Of Spiritual Leadership In The Rite Of Christian Initiation Of Adults, Stefanie Mingari
College of Education Theses and Dissertations
Executive Summary Faith and spirituality are becoming increasingly sought-after anchors in mounting challenges in the contemporary world. The need for effective leadership, spiritual guidance, and mentorship have become more pivotal. Evidence also suggests that spiritual leadership values and practices are related to leadership effectiveness and encompass the behaviors needed to motivate oneself, satisfy spiritual well-being, and positively influence others within that organization. However, more research has yet to explore how spirituality affects leadership behavior and action in faith-based programs such as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). This study explored the lived experiences of RCIA leaders and participants …

Religious Tourism In An Atheistic Society: The Example Of The Czech Republic, Ivo Jirásek, Tereza Štěrbová
Religious Tourism In An Atheistic Society: The Example Of The Czech Republic, Ivo Jirásek, Tereza Štěrbová
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
For a more accurate understanding of religious tourism, it is useful to distinguish between faith-based tourism, spiritual tourism and tourism in religious spaces. The former is characterized by religious faith (and processes of hierophany), the next by spirituality and transcendence experience, while the latter remains in the secular realm of experience. Based on this conceptual grasp, the paper presents the situation in the highly secular Czech Republic and investigates the opinions of service and offer providers in this type of tourism through interviews (n = 3). A comparison with the demand and preferences of tourism participants was collected through an …

The Biblical Foundations Of The Marian Title Solace Of Migrants And Its Potential For Pastoral Encounter With Migrants, Refugees, And Internally Displaced Persons, Vince Henry M. Salles
The Biblical Foundations Of The Marian Title Solace Of Migrants And Its Potential For Pastoral Encounter With Migrants, Refugees, And Internally Displaced Persons, Vince Henry M. Salles
Landas
This article examines the biblical foundations of the Marian title “Solace of Migrants,” added to the Litany of Loreto by Pope Francis in 2020. It highlights two key New Testament passages: the Holy Family’s journey to Bethlehem (Lk 2:1–7) and the Flight into Egypt (Mt 2:13–15). In these narratives, Mary, together with Joseph and Jesus, is portrayed as a migrant who experiences displacement, hardship, and uncertainty in a foreign land. As such, she stands in solidarity with migrants, refugees, and internally displaced persons today. The article argues that this title underscores a central pastoral priority of Pope Francis: care for …
Safeguarding And Homosexuality, James Mctavish,
Safeguarding And Homosexuality, James Mctavish,
Landas
The Church is actively working to promote and build up a culture of safeguarding. Those most vulnerable to abuse need care and protection. Sexual orientation is an important element to consider in safeguarding, as there are specific risks for homosexual persons, and persons with same-sex attraction (SSA) frequently experience abuse. In a sensitive and respectful way, this article examines the background elements regarding homosexuality and abuse and gives specific details that can help in formulating a vision of safeguarding that takes into account the specific reality of persons with SSA.
Amoris Laetitia On Natural Family Planning A Pastoral Approach, Antonio J. Ledesma
Amoris Laetitia On Natural Family Planning A Pastoral Approach, Antonio J. Ledesma
Landas
Archbishop Antonio J. Ledesma, S.J., in his catechesis “Amoris Laetitia on Natural Family Planning,” presents Responsible Parenthood and Natural Family Planning (NFP) as central to the vocation of families, in line with Amoris Laetitia. Couples are called to exercise freedom responsibly by discerning their personal and social circumstances, guided by a well-formed conscience. Echoing Pope Francis and the bishops, Ledesma highlights the relational and moral benefits of NFP, including fostering tenderness and authentic freedom within marriage. The RP-ANFP program in the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro has reached over 28,000 couples in 17 years, with the Standard Days Method gaining …

Bioethics And A Theology Of Vulnerability, Carrie Oneil-Smith
Obsculta
This essay looks at how a theology of vulnerability can contribute to ethical decision-making in an increasingly secular society. Relationality, power dynamics and scriptural justifications are considered, as well as early contributions made to this nascent field of Christian thought. This essay was written for a class on Health Care Ethics taught by Dr. Mary Ann Kish.
