Final Opportunities For Healthcare Chaplains To Share The Gospel To Those Facing End Of Life, Michal Lynn Lee May 2020

Final Opportunities For Healthcare Chaplains To Share The Gospel To Those Facing End Of Life, Michal Lynn Lee

Masters Theses

Spiritual care is a necessity for end-of-life care. Those with terminal illnesses and facing death are concerned about things of spiritual or existential nature. The National Consensus Project for Quality Palliative Care study indicated that most patients want to have their spiritual concerns addressed, and yet, spiritual concerns are not adequately addressed with the medical team and the current system of care. This paper builds on the role of the chaplain within a healthcare context for those facing end-of-life scenarios and reinforces the impact of the chaplain to fulfill his primary role of addressing eternal issues. Healthcare chaplains enter the …

A Study On The Conflict Resolution In Church: Focus On Sekwang Church, Byeong Joo Im May 2020

A Study On The Conflict Resolution In Church: Focus On Sekwang Church, Byeong Joo Im

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study aims to minimize conflicts that impede church unity and causes a decline in growth in advance, present a general diagnosis and analysis of the causes, and suggest appropriate solutions to them to mature the conflicts that have arisen. The Korean Church has achieved quantitative growth. Since the 1990s, however, Korean churches have seen a decline in growth. One of the causes is the inability to resolve the deepening and diversity of church conflicts. The researcher wrote this dissertation with the hope that the pastors of the Korean Church are ready for conflicts. Unfortunately, some pastors have become a …

Increase The Attendance Of The Parish Health Ministry By Ten Percent At The Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral Of New York, Christine A. Walcott

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The church is not responsible for the dietary behavior of its congregants, but the mission of the church is to make disciples that will go into the nation to profess the word of God. The mission to serve God with efficacy and stamina will become a difficult task for many Christians if they are not healthy. In the Bible Jesus makes it undeniably clear the importance of taking care of the body. This is an important issue for pastors as well as for believers. This thesis project will help believers remember that the health of their bodies is an important …

Power In Vulnerability: Widows And Priest Holes In The Early Modern English Catholic Community, Jennifer Binczewski May 2020

Power In Vulnerability: Widows And Priest Holes In The Early Modern English Catholic Community, Jennifer Binczewski

History Faculty Scholarship

Catholics in post-Reformation England faced new challenges in their resolution to remain faithful to Rome following the passage of anti-Catholic laws in the 1580s. These legislative attempts to root out Catholicism resulted in the creation of a clandestine community where private households became essential sites for the survival of Catholic worship. This article extends prior studies of the role of women in the English Catholic community by considering how marital status affected an individual’s ability to protect the ‘old faith’. By merging the study of widowhood with spatial analyses of Catholic households, I argue that early modern patriarchal structures provided …

Church Revitalization Through Effective Women’S Ministry, Dennis Jay Mccullough May 2020

Church Revitalization Through Effective Women’S Ministry, Dennis Jay Mccullough

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

America’s churches are in crisis. Historically, women are the majority and have been the backbone of the American Church. They go faithfully to churches where their needs are often overlooked, not identified, and they are unfulfilled. They faithfully serve the ministry while they are suffering in silence and waiting for the church to respond. The following thesis explores church revitalization efforts through effective women’s ministry. A qualitative approach will be utilized to collect and analyze the data. The data will be collected through recorded personal interviews and observations. Some interview statements will be measured on a Likert scale to judge …

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Bullying is a major issue that schools are still having issues with. Students today are being bullied the most during their middle school years. And how can we prevent females from bullying or becoming victimized? In a review of the literature on bullying from a female's perspective, …

Perceptions Of Dementia In Faith-Based Organizations, Megan Elizabeth Kooker May 2020

Perceptions Of Dementia In Faith-Based Organizations, Megan Elizabeth Kooker

Honors Program Theses

Dementia is a public health concern. The number of people who will have some form of dementia is expected to rise in the coming years (Brookmeyer, 2011). Around 50 million people have dementia worldwide. Every year, this number increases by about 10 million (World Health Organization, 2019). Because this is such a prevalent issue, each part of the community should be educated about dementia as well as how to best interact with people living with dementia (PLWD). In order to educate these individual community sectors, it is important to first research the existing perceptions about dementia among the community. Faith …

Big Things Start Small: A Survey Of The Role Of Small Groups In Christianity's Major Spiritual Awakenings, Joe Mack Easterling May 2020

Big Things Start Small: A Survey Of The Role Of Small Groups In Christianity's Major Spiritual Awakenings, Joe Mack Easterling

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

While small groups have enjoyed great popularity in recent years as a powerful dynamic of the life and ministry of many Christian churches, they are by no means a recent phenomenon. History suggests that small groups have been a part of the culture of God’s people since the Old Testament times, becoming even more of a staple of the Christian community during the first few centuries of its birth. Moreover, some kind of small group model has existed throughout virtually every generation of the Christian church. It seems to reason, then, that a small group dynamic has also been present …

Shared-Traumatic Experience And The Role Of The Minister Of Music: A Case Study Of Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Wayne Singleton May 2020

Shared-Traumatic Experience And The Role Of The Minister Of Music: A Case Study Of Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Wayne Singleton

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The ministry of the minister of music is essential when the local church has experienced a shared-traumatic event. Since many churches have never experienced a shared-traumatic event, there is little research to aid worship leaders in leading their congregation through loss and grief. There is a need to study the significant role of the minister of music when confronted with a life-changing event that has affected the local church ministry. Mother Emanuel AME Church, located in Charleston, SC, experienced a tragic event that significantly influenced the worship leader’s role in leading the congregation through a shared-traumatic event. This phenomenological study …

Treating And Preventing Childhood-Onset Mental Health Disorders, Katya Engalichev Apr 2020

Treating And Preventing Childhood-Onset Mental Health Disorders, Katya Engalichev

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

As the prevalence of mental health disorders in children rises, the need for integrated support systems and evidence-based practice increases, as well. Psychologists and psychiatrists recognize that childhood is the smartest and most effective time for intervention. Preventing severe and long-lasting mental health symptoms from developing also helps prevent crime, loss of productivity, substance abuse, family instability, and dependence on social services. One in five children in schools has a diagnosable mental health disorder, but about 70 percent of those children don’t ever receive the services they need. So how can parents, educators, and healthcare providers work together to both …

Spiritual And Religious Interventions For Medically High-Risk Adults: A Systematic Review, Nathanael J. Strissel Apr 2020

Spiritual And Religious Interventions For Medically High-Risk Adults: A Systematic Review, Nathanael J. Strissel

Senior Honors Theses

This systematic review is an update and expansion to the population and methods of a previous systematic review concerning spiritual and religious interventions for the well-being of terminally ill adults. After expanding the criteria to incorporate a more diverse population and including non-randomized experimental studies that contained relatively few concerns of bias, the results of the review are inconclusive due to insufficient data. The lack of usable data in the field highlights the ethical and theoretical issues with the use of experimental trials in analyzing the efficacy of spiritual and religious interventions. The development of spirituality in healthcare will remain …

Politicised Compassion And Pedagogical Partnership: A Discourse And Practice For Social Justice In The Inclusive Academy, S Gibson, A Cook-Sather Apr 2020

Politicised Compassion And Pedagogical Partnership: A Discourse And Practice For Social Justice In The Inclusive Academy, S Gibson, A Cook-Sather

Plymouth Institute of Education

Despite changes prompted by global legalisation and policy developments for social justice and inclusion, many institutions of higher education remain driven by neoliberal values, an endemic culture of performativity, and an emphasis on individual success. These phenomena inform, disfigure, and invert inclusion and equality in policy, practice, and outcome. In response, we propose politicised compassion fostered through pedagogical partnership as a political and social justice reaction to the status quo. This paper explores this proposal, grounding it in international research studies on student experience, partnership, and equality. The work’s novelty is in its advancement of Zembylas’ work on ‘critical compassion’ …

Shakespeare's Leading Franciscan Friars: Contrasting Approaches To Pastoral Power, Amy Camille Connelly Banks Apr 2020

Shakespeare's Leading Franciscan Friars: Contrasting Approaches To Pastoral Power, Amy Camille Connelly Banks

Theses and Dissertations

A popular perception persists that the Franciscan friars of Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado About Nothing bear heavy blame for the results of the play, adversely for Friar Lawrence and positively for Friar Francis. The friars do formulate similar plans, but their roles vary significantly. I contrast their approaches using Michel Foucault's definition of pastoral power, with Friar Lawrence as an overly manipulative friar controlling the lovers in spiritual matters, and Friar Francis as a humble military friar returning from the Wars of Religion to share his authority with others. This distinction--especially with Friar Lawrence appearing chronologically first--demonstrates Shakespeare …
