Rethinking The Hispanic Teacher Shortage: Dual Language Schools As Identity-Affirming Organizations, Elena Sada, Katie Ward
Rethinking The Hispanic Teacher Shortage: Dual Language Schools As Identity-Affirming Organizations, Elena Sada, Katie Ward
Journal of Catholic Education
Research has established the connection between the academic success of culturally and linguistically diverse students, and their schools’ ability to recruit and retain teachers that reflect such diversity (Shirrell et al., 2019). Studies have also highlighted the criticality of the students’ home language use as a way to enhance academic growth and develop their sociocultural competence and well-being (Feinauer & Howard, 2014). There is no research, however, addressing the differences between the experiences of Hispanic teachers in bilingual Catholic education compared to those in monolingual English Catholic education. This article highlights the differences captured by a recent study, and discusses …

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Shifting trends within and beyond the walls of the church are reshaping Christianity in our present context. Many Christian denominations are in the midst of a paradigm shift as great as or greater than the 16th century Reformation. Because the way forward looks nothing like the path the church has journeyed, church leaders, theologians, and scholars recognize the need for innovative and adaptive leadership expertise to meet the opportunities and challenges of the present time. For more than two decades, Mennonite Church Canada congregations have been on a journey of development, learning, and growth, transitioning theologically and experientially to a …

Current elders at Family Church completed a questionnaire, participated in case studies, and evaluated their intervention project in a focus group to establish an effective method of identifying, developing, and installing potential elders. This intervention research project produced a list of prerequisites for identifying potential elders, a seven-week elder training manual, and clear guidelines for ordaining elders at …

Bullying Prevention Essay And Art Competitions: Honoring School District Champions, Chasity D. Tompkins
National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal
Bullying is not a new concept. In fact, most of us can recall a time when we were bullied, someone else was bullied, or we bullied someone. While bullying can happen anywhere (including online through cyber-bullying), schools are often the center of research. Evaluations on school climate use bullying to help understand relationships. Prevention methods put the teacher or school staff in the driver seat, but these adults may not feel a connection to the work. Our school district created the Bullying Prevention Essay Contest to honor school district champions through literacy. Middle and high school students wrote about adults …
Gordon College And The Future Of The Ministerial Exception, Peter J. Smith, Robert W. Tuttle
Gordon College And The Future Of The Ministerial Exception, Peter J. Smith, Robert W. Tuttle
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
In Gordon College v. DeWeese-Boyd, a social work professor at a religious college sued after she was denied promotion. The college asserted the “ministerial exception,” a judicially crafted and constitutionally grounded exception to the ordinary rules of liability arising out of the employment relationship between religious institutions and their ministers. Although the plaintiff had no distinctively religious duties, the college expected her (and all other faculty) to integrate the faith into her teaching and scholarship. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) held that this obligation, standing alone, was insufficient to qualify the plaintiff as a minister within the meaning of …

Building A New Model Of Church-State Collaboration On Environmental Care In Ghana Based On Catholic Social Teaching And African Theological Traditions, Emmanuel Abbey-Quaye
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
The care of the environment has always been considered by the Ghana Catholic Church as an important aspect of her pastoral care and evangelizing mission in Ghana. Hence, in their various teachings in communiqués and other pastoral documents from 1965 till now, the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has consistently addressed the major environmental challenges confronting Ghana such as deforestation, mining, pollution, etc., applying the principles of stewardship and care of creation, intergenerational solidarity, integral ecology, etc., to ground these teachings.
Besides, in acknowledging that neither the Catholic Church nor the Ghanaian Government alone can resolve the various ecological crises …

Implementation Of An Acute Care For The Elderly (Ace) Unit In A Community Hospital, Kimberly A. Colonnelli
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Background: “Baby boomers” (born between 1946 and 1964) represent 15% of the total population of the United States (Population Reference Bureau, 2019), but 50% of its total healthcare expenses (Mattison, 2021). Growth of this population will have a corresponding rise in demand on healthcare resources. Replication of a geriatric inpatient care model (Palmer et al., 1994) was introduced in a large geographically and ethnically diverse integrated care delivery system.
Problem: The demographic for this small community hospital located in Northern California has a larger percentage of patients over the age of 65 compared to other facilities within this …

Impacts Of Social-Emotional Learning Via A Daily Writing Reflection In The Secondary Classroom, Angie Peterson
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine a time effective and subject area friendly way to address students’ social-emotional needs as a means to alleviate stress, communicate with teachers, and improve their overall wellbeing. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been many unforeseen or unaddressed repercussions that educators will continue to be dealing with as schools return to traditional formats or as they adjust to new ones. What impact can the use of daily journal writing have for high school students as an immediate and potentially long-term social-emotional learning or competency technique?
This study was …
