Formation Of A Professional Learning Community To Promote Metacognitive Teaching: An Action Research Study, Margaret Gregg Long

Theses and Dissertations

This mixed-methods action research study examined how implementing a Professional Learning Community (PLC) supports the development of metacognitive teaching. Participants were ten technical college science instructors. While PLCs are common in K-12 education, they are less employed at the postsecondary level. There is a gap in the literature regarding PLCs in the context of postsecondary education, and the metacognition of postsecondary level educators. A PLC was used as an intervention over a 15-week semester to aid in the development of metacognitive teaching. Instructor use of metacognition was assessed using pre- and post-surveys, questionnaires, and interviews. The study's results supported literature …

The Relationship Between Enabling District Structure And Principal Self-Efficacy In South Carolina, Justin Lee Nutter Apr 2021

The Relationship Between Enabling District Structure And Principal Self-Efficacy In South Carolina, Justin Lee Nutter

Theses and Dissertations

The role of the school principal is ever expanding in both scope and complexity. School districts must consider how to recruit, develop and retain principals to lead their schools. Principal self-efficacy (PSE) is primal to the leader’s overall positive effect on teaching and learning, yet the antecedents of PSE are not fully defined. This quantitative study used social cognitive theory to investigate the potential influence of enabling district structure (EDS) on the development of PSE within South Carolina public-school principals. Due to increased focus on consolidation of the state’s schools, the study also explored the potential relationship between EDS and …

The Cost Of Compassion: Assessing The Impact Of Organizational Culture & Self-Care On Compassion Fatigue & Compassion Satisfaction In Counselors, Jennifer Leigh Owen

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

It is the responsibility of mental health counselors to provide compassion for broken and hurting populations. For counselors, the continuous strain of empathizing with distressed clientele can often result in physical and emotional exhaustion known as compassion fatigue (Figley, 1995a). Although providing continuous compassion for others may contribute to negative experiences such as compassion fatigue, counselors can also experience positive outcomes from showing compassion towards clients, known as compassion satisfaction (Figley, 2002b). While risk factors to compassion fatigue have been widely explored among various occupations within the literature, less has been researched regarding moderating effects between compassion fatigue and compassion …

Jurnal Keperawatan Indonesia

Nursing career paths in public health centers have not been well established compared with nurses in hospitals. It is because the nursing career path has a different organizing system, which then becomes an obstacle in implementing the career path for nurses in primary health care. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the relationship between institutional and nurses’ readiness in implementing nursing career paths within public health centers. A cross-sectional study design with questionnaire as instrument was used in this research. A consecutive sampling technique was used to select 93 nurses from 13 public health centers. Furthermore, to identify the objective …

Connection, Involvement, And Modeling: Co-Constructing A Story Of Resilience Despite Early Parental Loss, Erin E. Silcox

The Qualitative Report

The use of oral history and narrative inquiry to investigate factors of resilience in the face of parental death is absent from the literature. Also, researchers have not linked factors that support resilience against trauma and that lead to positive change in residential treatment with the role of educators. In this study, my father-in-law, Norman, and I answered the research question: What factors in Norman’s adolescent life supported his resilience in the face of an early parental loss? I analyzed Norman’s oral history using narrative analysis methods. Findings include factors that led to Norman’s resilience including his connection to a …

Hiring a consultant can be an expensive endeavor for nonprofit arts organizations and is sometimes criticized for bearing few substantive outcomes. The unique workplace culture of such organizations calls for a differentiating consulting model. This article conceptualizes a new approach to nonprofit arts management consulting work by looking at the principles of ethnography. From the perspective of both client and consultant, the author posits one possible solution which considers the consultant as an ethnographer. Approaching consulting work with an ethnographer's lens moves away from the prescriptive toward more inclusive and organic techniques. This concept article will be of particular interest …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

It is known that low levels of job satisfaction can have a negative effect on morale, employee relations, employee performance, organizational functioning, organizational efficiency, and productivity. Low job satisfaction or outright dissatisfaction with a job is likely to evoke an array of negative and potentially damaging personal and professional consequences such as frustration, deterioration of mental and physical health, withdrawal, absence, lateness, sickness, accidents, intra–organizational conflict, thinking about quitting and retirement, examining the costs and benefits associated with leaving a job, and labour turnover. Intentions to quit can be very costly to an organization. It is against this background that …

Poisson Modeling And Predicting English Premier League Goal Scoring, Quang Nguyen Mar 2021

Poisson Modeling And Predicting English Premier League Goal Scoring, Quang Nguyen

Graduate Research Symposium

The English Premier League is well-known for being not only one of the most popular professional sports leagues in the world, but also one of the toughest competitions to predict. The first purpose of this research was to verify the consistency between goal scoring in the English Premier League and the Poisson process; specifically, the relationships between the number of goals scored in a match and the Poisson distribution, the time between goals throughout the course of a season and the exponential distribution, and the time location of goals during football games and the continuous uniform distribution. We found that …

Leading Change: A Case Study Of A Transparent, Scaffolded Process For Rebalancing Workloads Across Liaisons, Carolyn Schubert

Libraries

Campus and internal position reorganizations changes had created significant imbalances across workloads of liaison librarians. Some people were experiencing burnout, some were feeling unengaged due to underutilization. To build buy-in for the change process and ultimate change decisions, the interim Director developed a multi-step process for scaffolding change and creating transparency across the decision points. Working within the constraints of existing personnel, we had to be creative. The presentation will describe the techniques the interim Director used to identify the problem, facilitate open communication, and engage shared leadership to resolve the imbalances.

Students negotiate for a variety of actual items that they can take home or use in other ways. Furthermore, the task, previously done only in face-to-face classes, was recently reorganized to include both in person and remotely attending students. Both in person and remote students participate in the process and debriefing, and typically report that they enjoyed the exercise and felt engaged. This activity helps answer the need to provide complex and messy experiences …
